Kitchen shelf

It’s easy to transform a plain pine shelf into a stylish kitchen feature with Resene Waterborne Colorwood natural wood stain.

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: 50mm brass screws, cloth, drill, latex gloves, paintbrushes (including a wide flat artists’ brush), pencil, pine shelf and brackets, screwdriver, tape measure and PVA glue. Resene Aquaclear satin and Resene Waterborne Colorwood natural wood stain tinted to Resene Deep Cove.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Bali Hai.

Other ideas: For a warmer look use Resene Waterborne Colorwood tinted to Resene Candlelight.

Step 1
Step one
Using a wide flat artists’ brush, apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Colorwood Deep Cove to the wooden brackets, applying in the direction of the grain, as shown.

Step two
Depending on the depth of colour required, leave the stain to soak into the wood for up to 15 minutes. Wearing latex gloves, wipe off any excess Resene Waterborne Colorwood with a dry, lintfree cloth, wiping in the direction of the grain.

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Colorwood Deep Cove to the shelf, applying in the direction of the grain, as shown.
Step 4
Step four
Again, leave the stain to soak into the wood for up to 15 minutes, and then wipe off any excess Resene Waterborne Colorwood with a dry, lintfree cloth, wiping in the direction of the grain. Leave the shelf and brackets to dry for 48 hours.

Step five
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear satin to the shelf and brackets, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
With the pencil and tape, measure two marks approximately 1m apart, an equal distance from the floor.
Step 7
Step seven
Align the brackets to the pencil marks and drill pilot holes into the wall. Screw the brackets into position using brass screws.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply a few drops of PVA to the tops of the shelf brackets and place the shelf into position, as shown.
