Storage box

Turn a plain wooden box into a simple stylish storage solution using Resene Waterborne Colorwood woodstain.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 36

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: a wooden storage box (ours came from ‘Briscoes’), a clean lint-free cloth, damp cloth, latex glove, paintbrush and sandpaper. Resene Aquaclear satin, and two Resene Waterborne Colorwood testpots of Resene Hibiscus.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Texas Rose.

Other ideas: For a paler, limewash effect use two testpots of Resene Waterborne Colorwood in Resene Egg White.

Step 1
Step one
Lightly sand the box and wipe off any sanding dust with slightly damp cloth. Allow to dry.
Step 2

Apply one coat of Resene Hibiscus to the base of the box, brushing evenly in the direction of the grain, as shown.
Step 3

Leave the Resene Waterborne Colorwood to soak into the wood for up to 15 minutes and then wipe off any excess Resene Waterborne Colorwood with a clean lint-free cloth.
Step 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3, applying Resene Waterborne Colorwood to the outer sides of the box.
Step 5

Repeat steps 2 and 3, applying Resene Waterborne Colorwood to the base of the box.
Step 6
Step six
Repeat steps 2 and 3, applying Resene Waterborne Colorwood to the rim and inner sides of the box. Leave to dry for 48 hours.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Aquaclear satin to the base, rim and inner sides of the box and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene Aquaclear satin to the outer sides and base of the box and allow two hours to dry. Apply two further coats of Resene Aquaclear satin to the entire box, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
