Summer planter

Create this hot summer planter for your favourite potted colour with a bit of help from Resene.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 39

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: rough sawn fence palings cut to the following dimensions:
Two pieces measuring 500mm (wide) x 150mm (high) – front and back of planter
One piece measuring 500mm x 120mm – base of planter
Two pieces measuring 150mm high x 135mm at base tapering to 195mm at top – sides of planter
Two pieces of 50mm x 50mm treated timber cut to 150mm – feet of planter,
50mm galvanised flat head nails, hammer, paintbrush, paint stirrer, pencil, sandpaper, saw, tape measure and a drill with drill bit. Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Meranti and Resene Totem Pole.

To get the look: Mark planted the container with orange gazanias and painted the background wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Trinidad.

Other ideas: Create a cool green herb planter using Resene Waterborne Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Grey Green.

Measure, mark and cut wood to the dimensions listed above – note angled cuts of side pieces and feet.

Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 3

Attach the front and back pieces to the base with 50mm nails, angling the pieces out slightly, as shown.
Step 4

Attach the side pieces to the front, back and base, fixing with 50mm nails.
Step 5

Attach the feet to the base with 50mm nails, as shown. Drill drainage holes in the base of the planter.
Step 6

Stir the Resene Waterborne Woodsman with a flat wooden stirrer.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Totem Pole to the front, back and base of the planter, allowing 24 hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Meranti to the sides and feet of the planter, allowing 24 hours for each coat to dry.
