Hexagon planters

DIY project from NZ Gardener magazine

Rose Hughes shows you how to make hanging honeycomb wall planters.

You will need: 1.5m of 65mm x 19mm & 2m of 40mm x 19mm treated pine, 6mm ply offcuts, drop saw, jigsaw, screwdriver, drill & small bit, sander, sandpaper, wood glue, tape measure and pencil, 4g x 16mm wood screws, 40mm nails, saw tooth picture hangers (or similar), Resene Test Pots, paint brushes, stencil brush.

NB: I have made these with frame pieces cut to 80mm, 100mm & 140mm but they can be made to any size by amending the measurements.

Cost: $50 excluding the paint and plants.

Step 1 Step one
Set your drop saw arm to a 30° angle and with the timber width upwards cut the first angle, measure 100mm from the top edge. Turn the wood, mark and cut the second. Repeat to cut six matching pieces. Sand the cut edges.
Step 2 Step two
On a flat surface lay out the pieces and glue the joins ensuring a good match. Leave to dry. Lay the frame out on the ply sheet and mark the backing board and then the front pocket. Cut out with the jigsaw. Sand well.
Step 3 Step three
Undercoat all the surfaces with Resene Quick Dry Primer and allow to dry. Topcoat with your chosen colours. I used Resene test pots in Hyperactive, Scrumptious & Sushi.
Step 4 Step four
Mark the width of the pocket on the outside of the frame, drill nail holes with the side holes at an angle. Attach the pocket by nailing through the pre-drilled holes into the timber ensuring the front is flush with the outside of the frame.
Step 5 Step five
Glue and screw the backboard in place.
Step 6 Step six
Mark the centre top and attach the picture hanger.
