Lock'em up

Mark Rayner converts an old kitchen cupboard into secure storage for garden bits and pieces.

You will need: An old wooden kitchen cupboard, 6mm treated plywood 22mm treated plywood, offcuts of treated timber, four stainless steel hinges, stainless steel latch and padlock, hammer, saw, screwdriver, 25mm galvanised flat head nails, 40mm galvanised jolt head nails, exterior PVA glue, sandpaper, paintbrushes including artists’ brush, Resene Quick Dry, Resene Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Elvis, Resene testpots in the following colours:Resene Ayers Rock, Resene Bullseye, Resene Desperado, Resene Moxie, and Resene Sambuca.

Top tip: For maximum durability, your cupboard needs to be made from timber rather than particle-board or MDF. Make sure all wood surfaces are well protected inside and out with primer and two coats of paint.

Step 1 how to make a secure storage cupboard for your garden

Step 1
Remove the cupboard’s hardboard backing; cut a piece of 6mm plywood to match. Remove the cupboard top (if any); cut a matching 22mm plywood top with a 25mm overlap at the front and sides. Sand any rough edges.

Step 2 how to make a secure storage cupboard for your garden

Fix the new cupboard back with 25mm nails and PVA. Fix its new top with 40mm nails and PVA. Cut four small feet from timber offcuts and attach to the base with 40mm nails and PVA. Replace old hinges with stainless steel ones.

Sand the old paintwork to provide a key and apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the painted areas of the cupboard including the handles. Allow to dry for two hours. Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the unpainted plywood and allow to dry for two hours.

Step 4
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the unpainted plywood and allow to dry for two hours.

Step 5 how to make a secure storage cupboard for your garden

Step 5
Apply two coats of Resene Elvis to the entire cupboard, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step 6 how to make a secure storage cupboard for your garden

Step 6
Paint a plant pot on the front doors of the cupboard with two coats of Resene Ayers Rock. Allow two hours for each coat of paint to dry.

Step 7 how to make a secure storage cupboard for your garden

Step 7
Paint shadows around and under the rim of the painted pot using Resene Desperado. Paint the ‘soil’ in the painted pot with Resene Sambuca. Allow to dry and apply a second coat of each.

Step 8 how to make a secure storage cupboard for your garden

Step 8
Paint some ‘pelargonium style’ foliage and flowers using Resene Moxie and Resene Bullseye. Allow two hours to dry and then attach lockable latch across the top edge of the doors.
