painting the huts

DOC huts

Resene has a long proud history of supplying paints to Department of Conservation (DOC) backcountry huts – it’s kiwi paint protecting kiwi huts for all to enjoy.

Department of Conservation (DOC) backcountry huts are dotted all over New Zealand, and are a welcome sight to anyone on a walking track as a chance to stop, rest and refuel ready for the rest of the trip ahead.

Resene has a long proud history of supplying paints to Department of Conservation (DOC) backcountry huts – it’s kiwi paint protecting kiwi huts for all to enjoy. These huts come in for a real workout with wear and tear from backpacks, tramping boots and worn out visitors traipsing inside and out, let alone the environmental conditions.

While the huts vary greatly in size, comfort, remoteness and view, they still all need to be coated with a quality paint system to minimise future maintenance work, vitally important when it’s remembered that most of the painting cost is generally related to getting access to the site and the cost of applying the paint, not the paint itself.

Outside Resene Hi-Glo gloss waterborne paint provides a durable exterior finish on DOC backcountry huts in a variety of colours depending on the hut’s location and existing colours, complemented by Resene Woodsman on stained areas.

Inside, ply walls, mouldings, cooking benches, architraves, interior seating, window and door reveals are finished in Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane clear to protect the surface while allowing the natural grain of the timber to show through. Ply ceilings and cornices and the toilet interior ply walls and ceiling are finished in Resene Quick Dry topcoated with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

And to finish the interior, flooring, bunks and ladders, tables and forms and the toilet seat and floor are finished in Resene Polythane moisture cured polyurethane for a tough durable finish.

With over 900 huts all over the country, that’s a lot of walls, floors and more that needs painting!

Paint systems as specified in the Department of Conservation (DOC) Hut Procurement Manual Part G Specifications for Backcountry Huts QD code VC1414 March 2009 Version 4.0 (now superceded).
