Sponged up - Mickys Irish Bar
After a hot summer's day at the beach, in Whitianga offers a welcome respite from the sun and a trove of ice cool beverages that is hard to resist.

The building was relocated to its current site and required exterior decoration and an interior refit before opening for business. Cedar weatherboards were stained in Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Downriver (warm blue) joined by fascias in Resene Hi-Glo tinted to Resene Scoria (copper red brown), soffits in Resene Caraway (grainy beige) and posts in Resene Half Caraway (light grainy beige). The earthy blue tones combine well with the seaside location, giving the bar a modern yet rustic appearance.

Walk inside and the bar feels comfortably aged and mellow, created using a special sponging technique with a mix of Resene Spanish White (complex neutral), Resene Colins Wicket (ochre green) and Resene Aquaclear clear waterborne urethane. The natural timber look is drawn indoors with pine balustrades finished in Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Dark Rimu (timber brown) overcoated in protective coats of Resene Aquaclear. Bar leaners are finished in a similar system with a clear topcoating system of Resene Uracryl 403 to provide a tough easy to clean surface on these hard wear areas.
