Passion2paint - Artist Rodney Edge
Artist Rodney EdgeBy day a shop manager for Whangarei Resene ColorShop, by night or any other spare moment an artist, Rodney Edge has a passion for paint! His artworks have featured at the Reyburn House Art Gallery in Whangarei, most recently in an exhibit entitled Yendor's Edge.

Rodney has combined his artistic painting with his paint retailing since his mid teens. Not surprisingly he uses Resene paints, primarily acrylic house paint combined with Resene Enamacryl Metallic.

Lacking formal art training, Rodney tends to start a painting without setting a firm plan of the finish, then lets his hands and eyes guide the design to its completion. The finished result is fresh and often astounds Rodney who is left wondering where it came from.

Brightly coloured with a preference for primary hues and intensely idiosyncratic, the sharp-edged, carefully blended images explore icons of faces, flames, frames and symbols cleverly juxtaposed into works that seemingly create their own direction.

The recurring use of candles, flames and suns reflects a belief that the sun is the source of all light and colour while the candle is a metaphor for the soul; a source of heat and light but also vulnerable and ephemeral. Eyes appear empty - as windows to the soul, Rodney cannot look into the souls of others and is therefore unable to paint them either.

Guided by passion and unafraid of breaking unwritten rules, Rodney is an inspiration to all aspiring artists trying to find their style, to let go and allow their own self to dictate their style rather than the conventions of society.
