A big splash - Porirua Trust Aquatic Centre
A lively environment has been created at the $7 million Porirua Trust Aquatic Centre where innovative architecture and colour enhances a nautical theme.

The Aquatic Centre has to withstand some harsh treatment. As a result Wellington architect Dennis Chippendale created a largely concrete, steel and glass structure using colour and shape to create some relief from the materials' ruggedness.

Inside the pool area the colours are highly evocative shades of green, sharply contrasted with bright red steelwork painted in Resene Uracryl 403 which also features on exterior steelwork and guttering.

Interior walls have been topcoated in Resene Lumbersider and F.10 Glaze for extreme durability and dirt resistance, and rimu finishes have been painted in Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin. The building's exterior is graced with wave forms cut into the cladding, a water slide, port-hole type windows and ships' funnels.

Resene Resitex Standard and Resene Sandtex, overcoated in F.10 glaze, has been used on exterior walls and Resene Woodsman Stain was specified for the decking and fencing.
