Cameo jewellery box

Turn a plain wooden box into a Wedgwoodinspired jewellery box with a little bit of help from Resene.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 49

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Latex glove, wooden box (ours came from ‘Spotlight’), paintbrushes (including an artists’ brush), pencil, PVA glue, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpots of Resene Rice Cake and Resene Wedgewood, Selleys multipurpose ‘Knead it’, small screwdriver.

To get the look: Mark painted the background table top with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Opal.

Other ideas: Create a bold silhouette by painting the box with Resene Alabaster and the cameo head with Resene Black.

Step one
Remove the hinges from the box using the small screwdriver.

Step two
Draw a cameo head shape, as shown, on the lid of the box with a pencil.

Step three
Wearing a latex glove, mix a little ‘Knead It’, following manufacturer’s instructions.

Step four
Press the ‘Knead It’ onto the lid of the box to form the raised cameo head, using the pencil lines as a guide. Use a little PVA to ensure it sticks firmly and allow to dry.

Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the base and lid of the box and allow two hours to dry.

Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Wedgewood to the lid and base of the box, cutting in around the raised cameo head. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.
