Wooden abstract

It’s easy to create this subtle contemporary artwork from an old wooden picture frame and a piece of marine plywood.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 65

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, old wooden picture frame, paintbrush, piece of marine plywood, PVA glue, Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Colorwood testpot of Resene Rock Salt, ruler, sandpaper, saw.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Submerge.

Other ideas: Create a darker, flatter effect by using a combination of Resene Aquaclear satin and a Resene Colorwood testpot of Resene Pitch Black.

Lightly sand the picture frame and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 2

Measure, mark and cut the piece of marine plywood to fit the frame.
Step 3

Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 4

Carefully splatter some Resene Aquaclear over the marine plywood, as shown. Allow to dry.
Step 5

Apply one coat of Resene Rock Salt to the marine plywood, as shown, brushing in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Carefully splatter some Resene Rock Salt over the marine plywood and allow to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Fix the plywood into the wooden frame with PVA glue and allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss to the picture and frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
