Textured mirror

Transform a humble framed mirror with this cool metallic textured effect.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 76

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Damp sponge, filler, framed mirror, knife, low tack masking tape, paintbrush, Resene Aquaclear Gloss, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpots of Resene Cosmic and Resene Galaxy, sandpaper (coarse), scissors.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Ghost.

Other ideas: For a cool metallic blue effect paint the frame with a basecoat of Resene Astronaut and two topcoats of Resene Time Warp.

Mask off the edges of the mirror with low tack masking tape, as shown.
Step 2

Sand the frame with coarse sandpaper to ‘key’ the surface – this will help the filler stick.
Step 3

Wipe off any sanding residue with a damp sponge.
Step 4

Apply filler to the frame using a knife, ensuring the finished surface is textured. Allow filler to dry.
Step 5

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the frame and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Cosmic to the frame and allow two hours to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Galaxy to the frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear to the frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Carefully remove the masking tape.
