Background to mural creation:
Jenni Kerr was asked by the principal of Timaru West School if she would paint a scene to surround the just completed junior adventure play area, which is a wooden ship/sandpit structure.

Instead of opting for palm trees, seagulls and stylised versions of sandcastles that was the original design direction of the PTA, Jenni decided to depict an underwater adventure theme. The mural is based around the skeleton of a shipwreck on the sea floor. This theme enabled Jenni to make the mural fun for the children by painting sea horses, octopuses, jellyfish and lots of different types of fish as well as all the forms of plant life and old pots with loads of treasure spilling out.

It's an exciting mural for the children as there are hidden eyes peering out from within the plant forms. The mural gradually moves from the seabed to a fishpond on the surface with waterlilies and shells adorning the rocks. Judging from the children's reactions, the mural has been awarded the thumbs up.
