Occasional table

Construct this informal occasional table from particle board and timber and get the shabby chic finish using Resene Paint Effects medium.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 12

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: a piece of 25mm particle board or MDF measuring 450mm x 600mm, four pieces of 50mm x 50mm timber cut to 700mm, two pieces of 19mm MDF cut to the following dimensions: 300mm x 50mm and two pieces of 450mm x 50mm. 75mm screws, drill with 3mm drill bit, paintbrush, paint stirrer, pencil, PVA glue, ruler, sandpaper, saw, screwdriver and wood filler. Resene Quick Dry, Resene Aquaclear satin and Resene Paint Effects Medium. Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Daydream and a Resene testpot of Resene Nirvana.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall and skirting with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Dairy Cream.

Other ideas: Try a cool blue combo using Resene Elvis mixed with Resene Paint Effects Medium over a basecoat of Resene Onepoto.

Step 1
Step one
Measure, mark and cut the particle board and timber to the dimensions listed above. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 2
Step two
Using the table top as a flat surface, assemble the legs and MDF underside supports, fixing together with PVA and screws, as shown. Drill pilot holes first to prevent the MDF from splitting.
Step 3
Step three
Attach the table top to the base, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and screws. Again, drill pilot holes to prevent the MDF from splitting. Fill screw heads with wood filler, allow to dry and then sand smooth.
Step 4
Step four
Paint the table with one coat of Resene Quick Dry and allow two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Paint the table with two coats of Resene Daydream, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Pour the testpot of Resene Nirvana into the Resene Paint Effects Medium and stir thoroughly.
Step 7
Step seven
Lightly brush on the Resene Paint Effects Medium in one direction to create a subtle ‘grained’ effect. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear to the table, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
