Simple stool

Use a fabulous combination of colour and varnish to turn a plain stool into a funky feature.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 24

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: a wooden stool, sandpaper, screwdriver, clean cloths, paintbrush and pliers. Resene Quick Dry, Resene Aquaclear gloss and Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Pelorous.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall and skirting with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Quarter Tea.

Other ideas: To add more depth to the wood on the legs of the stool, simply stir some Resene Colorwood Enhance into the Resene Aquaclear before applying.

Carefully remove the covering from the stool.
Step 2

Remove the legs and brackets.
Step 3

Lightly sand the stool seat and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 4

Carefully sand off the old varnish on the legs. Begin with a medium grade sandpaper and finish with a fine grade sandpaper. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 5

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the seat and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Pelorous to the seat allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Replace the brackets and screw in the legs of the stool.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear to the legs allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
