White table

Turn an old table into a stylish feature with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 49

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloths, filler, hammer, nail punch, old wooden table (ours had a damaged top), paintbrushes, panel pins, pencil, piece of plywood putty knife or similar, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Double Alabaster, Resene Quick Dry, Resene Timber Surface Prep, sandpaper, saw, straight edge, tape measure.

To get the look: Mark stained the background fence with Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Totem Pole.

Other ideas: For a bright yellow effect, paint the table with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Turbo.

Step 1
Step one
Measure, mark and cut the piece of plywood to fit over the existing (damaged) table top. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 2
Step two
Fix the plywood to the existing table top with panel pins and punch in the nail heads.
Step 3
Step three
Fill the nail holes with filler and allow to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Sand the filled areas and the base and legs of the table to ‘key’ the surface. Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 5
Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Timber Surface Prep to the plywood top and allow to dry - this will help to lessen the wood grain and smooth the surface.
Step 6
Step six
Sand the Resene Timber Surface Prep to a smooth finish and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth. Repeat steps five and six if necessary.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry over the Resene Timber Surface prep and spot prime any areas of bare wood on the rest of the table. Allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Double Alabaster to the table, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
