Enjoy now extend later

This home is a 1960s beach-town bach and the Matson family wanted to give it a lick of paint and some new carpet to make it comfortable enough to get them through until they can extend it.

The home is by the beach with an amazing view out to Rangitoto, Auckland City and Waiheke. They wanted to reflect the calmness that the sea view brings to the inside of their home. They also love blues so were keen to use these colours as a base throughout but also bring fun elements into each of the kid’s rooms to make them feel like it was truly home.

When researching colour ideas, the aim was to have one colour throughout the whole house as a base that would work well with the other colours that they would end up using. A friend had used Resene Sea Fog in her house which they liked, so they decided to use it on all of their walls, doors and ceilings.

They also love yellow; it makes them feel warm. They have always wanted a yellow door to greet them when they come home. They have an internal door that used to be an outside door inside the front entrance - this was the perfect door to paint yellow. They chose the colour Resene Wild Thing and absolutely love it!

When it came to the kids’ rooms, each child was involved in choosing colours.

Their middle son wanted mountains with a sun. This was created using Resene Steel Grey, Resene Quarter Stack and for the snow tips a mixture of Resene Quarter Stack and Resene Sea Fog. It really brings life to their room.

Their daughter wanted a bright colour. They went to the Resene ColorShop together and she chose a couple of charts that had colours on it that she liked and chatted about how each of the colours she loved could work with the furniture that she already had. She decided to use Resene Scandal. Nervous about using such a bright colour in such a small room, they decided to use it only on two of the walls and to a certain height. It works great. It is such a beautiful colour for a girl’s room and is a beautiful colour to accessorise.

Lounge and study

When it came to the main living area, it was an extremely big open space. They had to replace a lot of the kitchen cupboards and bench top as it was really run down. Looking through all of the blues on the Resene charts they fell in love with the colour Resene Escapade. It now decorates the main wall in the lounge. It is a calming colour and again so beautiful to accessorise.

Thanks to the Matson family.
