Teenagers study

Kids' Corner from Your Home and Garden magazine

Studying will become top of the agenda with a colourful workspace makeover like this one

Teens study space

Recycled tins have been painted in Resene Scrumptious and Resene Blue Lagoon to be used as pencil pots. A wooden clipboard has been transformed with a lick of Resene Blue Lagoon. The floor is painted Resene Vista Blue.

Ideally every teenager should have a space where they can study, research or do creative projects. Much like a child’s bedroom, a study space needs to evolve over time. The most important thing to consider in creating a study space for your teen is that every teenager is different. You want your child to enjoy spending time in the space so it is important that it should reflect their personal style. This girl’s study space is bright, fun and versatile, allowing your teen to change decorative elements as they please.

Desk details

A trestle desk not only looks great but is ideal for a room with limited space as you can buy the legs and get a top in a suitable length. We used a door and painted the edge to match the legs (Resene Scrumptious), keeping the top neutral (Resene Half Rice Cake). A chair was painted Resene Revolution to match the pegboard.

Pegboard cool

Keeping your pegboard a neutral colour (ours is painted in Resene Revolution) allows the items on it to ‘pop’. Your teen can stick up photos of friends, class schedules, team photos, art prints, etc, on the board and swap things out whenever they fancy.

Making sure your teens have everything close by will help them avoid distractions.

A pegboard shelf is a versatile item that works well in a study space as it allows you to store important books and materials, show off trophies, add some photos, and at the same time keeps the desktop clear of clutter.

Lighting is a must for any work station. If desktop space is limited and a desk lamp is not an option then consider hanging a ‘naked bulb’ pendant above the desk
