Resene Ground Games with Mark Rayner - Project 07

You will need: Area of asphalt measuring approximately 5.6m x 10m (prepped first with Resene Moss & Mould Killer and then waterblasted), chalk, duct tape, large set square, low tack masking tape, marker pen, paintbrush, paint roller and tray, Resene Lumbersider tinted to the following colours: Resene Bright Red, Resene Fizz, Resene Gobstopper, Resene Outrageous, Resene Sports Star, Resene Surfs Up and Resene Top Secret, Resene Membrane Roofing Primer, Resene Tennis Court Coating (green), tape measure.

To get the look: When applying Resene Tennis Court Coating, brush or roller the first coat in one direction, and the second coat across in the other direction to get even coverage.

Other ideas for play: If bigger children or teens are going to be playing the game enlarge the template squares to 600mm, making the playing area 8.4m x 15m.

Learn how to play

Step 1
Step one
Mask off a rectangle measuring 5.6m x 10m using duct tape, as shown.
Step 2
Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Membrane Roofing Primer to the masked off area and allow to dry.
Step 3
Step three
Measure and mark 400mm intervals on the duct tape around the four edges of the masked off area, as shown.
Step 4
Step four
Using our design and these measurements as a guide, paint in the red squares with two coats of Resene Bright Red, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Overlap the marks by approx 50mm, as shown (these will be masked and painted over with adjoining colours).
Step 5
Step five
Repeat step 4 painting the yellow squares with two coats of Resene Fizz and the blue squares with two coats of Resene Sports Star. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Measure, mark and mask the remaining squares, painting the orange squares with Resene Outrageous, the green squares with Resene Top Secret, the indigo squares with Resene Surfs Up and the violet squares with Resene Gobstopper. Remove any masking tape before the second coat of each colour has dried.
Step 7
Step seven
Again, using our design as a guide, measure, mark and mask the remaining strips and inner rectangles, as shown.
Step 8
Step eight
Using a brush for the smaller areas and a roller for the larger areas, apply one coat of Resene Tennis Court Coating to the masked off areas and allow three hours to dry. Apply a second coat and remove the masking tape and duct tape before the second coat has dried. Allow 24 hours before using.

How to play

Number of players: 2 teams of up to 30.

Additional equipment: Whistle.

How to play: A player (or teacher) is selected to act as referee. Each team stands in their rectangular court and when the referee blows the whistle, the players run randomly around the court. The whistle is blown a second time and each player has to run to their nearest coloured square. The referee chooses one person from each team who is standing on a red square and when the whistle is blown a third time, each of these players has to run and 'tag' a team member who is standing on an orange square, and then they go and stand on the larger red square. The orange player then 'tags' a yellow player and the game continues until the colours of the rainbow are complete. The player who is violet, then tags another red player and so on. The winning team is the one that has completed most rainbows (or has fewest players left in play).
