Vancouver Olympic Village: "World's greenest neighbourhood"

The Vancouver Olympic Village, built for the Winter Olympics 2010, is promoted as "the greenest neighbourhood in the world". Millennium Waters, the Olympic Athlete’s Village, received LEED Platinum Certification for the entire neighbourhood and LEED Gold status for all buildings. Millennium Water is only the second neighbourhood to receive LEED Platinum status, with the first being Dockside Green in Victoria, British Columbia. With super energy efficient residential units, close proximity to the city centre, a renewable energy heating system and a net zero energy building, this village makes other eco-developments green with envy.

Roger Bayley, the design manager for Millennium Waters, made a special trip to New Zealand in conjunction with Resene to share his knowledge and experience on this world class project. He discussed the Olympic Village focusing on Environmental Sustainable Design, Urban Design, City Design and waterfront renewal, topics highly relevant in New Zealand.

Roger is a New Zealander who studied at the University of Canterbury, obtaining a B.E. Structural in 1967 before moving to Canada where he is currently principal of Roger Bayley Inc., which he founded in 2009 after over 20 years as a principal at Merrick Architecture, which he co-founded in 1984. He acted as the design manager for Millennium Water, Vancouver’s 2010 Olympic Village development, overseeing the 150+ consultant teams that were involved in the completion of this vast project. Roger has directed Merrick Architecture since its inception, providing project definition, value engineering, quality control, resource management and project scheduling. Roger is a strong advocate for sustainable building practices, and has extensive experience as a green building leader and educator at conferences internationally.
