Kew House

Victoria

A white, blue, grey and tan colour scheme was selected to calm the spaces while retaining a warm feel that worked with the coffee table.

The client had downsized from a large family home and wanted to start afresh. The only piece of furniture she wanted to retain was the coffee table. The brief was to lighten and calm the spaces, with a relaxed feel. She didn’t want any structural changes, so the plan worked with what was already there, including the timber floor. She also needed to add storage.

Warmth and elegance

A white, blue, grey and tan colour scheme was selected to calm the spaces while retaining a warm feel that worked with the coffee table. There are some touches of luxury in the lounge with the velvet couch; while the dining room has a red tribal rug to add vibrancy. The architecture of the home is very rectangular, so curved elements, such as the round NOMI dining table legs and round mirror, were introduced to soften the sharp corners of the rooms. The Vitsoe shelving unit in the dining room provides lots of storage and adds an architectural quality into the space.

Lounge, dining room

The s-fold curtains add a stunning finishing touch. They add warmth, elegance and consistency to the lounge and dining rooms. They also have a practical element, hiding the uneven and very ordinary aluminium windows. They cover two entire walls from floor to ceiling, with blockout blinds hidden behind.

Resene Half Duck Egg Blue adds a harmonious and feminine feel to the spaces and brings the lounge and dining room walls together to make the two separate rooms feel like they are one. The cool blue colour also acts to make the narrow spaces seem larger and to provide a backdrop for some pops of red in both rooms. Resene Alabaster was selected for the second colour to add freshness and lightness to the scheme without making it too cool. The dining room wall opposite the window is painted in Resene Alabaster to provide relief from the Resene Half Duck Egg Blue and to reflect the light from the window.
