pastel living and dining

Karori, Wellington

In order to combat the very beige appearance and inject youth and colour into the room, when choosing paint colours for the walls, contemporary pink and blue were chosen.

Pastel living and dining

This home is a 1960s bungalow perched on a hillside with views across the suburb. The living and dining room were very uninspiring so was the first space to be decorated. The colour scheme was dated with off-white floor-to-ceiling curtains and walls painted creamy white.

Updating the décor has meant the room has a completely different feel even though no structural changes were made. Some of the changes made included removing the enormous curtains, which swallowed the windows, replacing them with timber venetian blinds to complement the wood floorboards.

In order to combat the very beige appearance and inject youth and colour into the room, when choosing paint colours for the walls, contemporary pink (Resene Pot Pourri) and blue (Resene Half Robin Egg Blue) were chosen, both inspired by cushions.

The project was a process over a number of months as it took several attempts to get the colour tone just right. Resene Half Robin Egg Blue was used for over 90% of the room because it provided a fresh contemporary colour which wasn’t too bold and Resene Pot Pourri was used in the dining room to add a hint of femininity to the space, which is replicated in various accessories around the room.

Along with painting, a large lightshade was installed above the dining table, while glass sconces were removed. There was also a tired sliding door leading to the kitchen, which was removed. The artwork hanging above the dining table was made using old pieces of grass-cloth wallpaper painted with a white wash.
