Remuera house

Remuera, Auckland

Sitting happily on Remuera’s northern slopes is this 1910s bungalow, which has been lovingly restored over the last twenty years.

Home in Remuera

Rogan Nash Architects was asked to design the final touches of this Auckland renovation including a master plan for the garden, allowing for a fountain and reconfiguring the parking and outdoor dining areas, a new sunroom, study and kitchen (suitable for the client who is a patisserie chef).

Rogan Nash Architects also advised on the selection of wall colours, soft furnishings and furniture as part of the interior design of this home. This is a large home for a couple with a grown-up family. They are very social and often entertain family and friends. It was very important that the house could accommodate large parties as well as feeling comfortable for the couple on a day-to-day basis. The clients wanted the renovated areas to fit seamlessly within the original home, which was bursting with character features and a mix of furniture from different eras. They were keen to have a flow from their existing paint colours to the new palette. They did not want to have open plan, but wanted to keep the series of individual rooms, which were all to be painted different colours.

Home in Remuera - kitchen

The clients were keen to have a visual link between the kitchen/living area and the adjoining sunroom. They wanted the wall colours to be different in each space, but as you can stand in one room and see the next room beyond it was important they did not fight each other. Throughout the rest of the home the interior doors are all natural timber, and the skirtings, scotias and trims are all off-white, which gives a good base to place colour against. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Jungle Mist and Resene Mystic were chosen as they were soft and calm, but had a gentle elegance to them, much like the house itself.

They wanted the kitchen to feel warm and inviting, but still maintain a traditional feeling. The chosen blue relates to manor houses of England, but also references more modern vernaculars. The sunroom has a contrasting purpose, but the colours still needed to relate between the rooms.

The two colours marry together to create a harmonious aesthetic.
