Richmond Street villa addition

Wellington

The concept for the new kitchen and living room addition to the east was to create an L-shaped extension to form a sheltered north facing central courtyard.

Richmond Street villa addition

This existing 100 year old villa is situated on a narrow site in close proximity to its neighbours. The client wanted to remove the existing lean-to, which included the kitchen and bathroom. The main problem with the house was there was little to no direct sun.

The concept for the new kitchen and living room addition to the east was to create an L-shaped extension to form a sheltered north facing central courtyard. The other solution was the addition of clerestory windows to the north to let light in and use passive solar methods to heat the house.

Upon entering the new addition the ceiling is lowered from 3 metres to 2.2 metres defining the kitchen space and providing a sense of intimacy, while the sloped ceiling and north facing clerestory windows in the living room give a heightened sense of release and light. The floor consists of low maintenance polished concrete slab, which provides a natural store to heat the new addition of the house.

The volume of the space and quality of the light called for a pared back aesthetic. Tongue and groove lining to both walls and ceiling adds texture, allowing the paint colours to be kept minimalist in hues of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen and Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom (semi-gloss) in Resene Merino and Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Black White on the ceiling.

The client has a keen eye for collecting one-off eclectic items, which she has curated together. The polished concrete floor already added an industrial feel to the place, so a combination of homely throws and couches with industrial furniture and lamps brings it all together.

While demolishing the existing lean-to, they came across the original linoleum floor, a piece of which was kept and framed.
