St Anne’s Catholic School

Manurewa

The building form was fairly simple with the use of precast concrete, steel and timber cladding and the use of colour was introduced to soften the severity of the form.

DLM Architects was engaged to carry out a development plan for St Anne’s Catholic School. The school was experiencing roll growth, the existing classroom areas were under code and arranged as single cell teaching units, so rationalisation was required.

Various options ranging from new build to alterations were considered and costs for each were evaluated. It was then decided that instead of altering the existing buildings it was easier and more cost effective to demolish them and establish new teaching blocks.

The resulting design was two classrooms blocks, each two storeys high, linked by a veranda. The complete new build was designed to include 21 classroom equivalents and a library. The block was split into seven studio spaces consisting of three classroom equivalents. Each studio space was open plan with small group learning areas scattered throughout, creating innovative and flexible learning environments. Transparency between group learning areas and between studios was achieved through the use of internal glazing.

Students

The new classroom blocks were to be the central focus for the school as the building form embraced the heart of the school and would house the majority of the students. The building form was fairly simple with the use of precast concrete, steel and timber cladding and the use of colour was introduced to soften the severity of the form. Vibrancy was achieved with a palette of primary colours – Resene Poppy, Resene Bite Me and Resene Endeavour – with contrasting black – Resene Nero, white – Resene Alabaster, and grey – Resene Half Stonewall. Galvanised steel posts were finished in Resene Uracryl in Resene Nero.

Each studio needed its own identity. Each had a neutral base of Resene Half Tea and Resene Alabaster and was given its own colour scheme through additional furnishings, connecting each studio to the exterior colour scheme.

The main challenge of this project was the delivery of a substantial new building in an operating school. While this meant a year of disruption, that has all but been forgotten as the students and staff have embraced the new learning spaces.
