Princes Hill Home

Victoria

This project involved an extensive renovation of an existing double fronted Victorian terrace.

Princes Hill Home

The rear of the property was demolished to make way for a basement and two storey extension. The existing house was stripped back to the bare substructure, and in some cases, rooms were restored to their original size.

The interior architectural design is very progressive while still retaining some of the period features of the original house. The design, although mostly modernist in approach, carefully considers the junctions between these two opposing elements and the colour scheme showcases this juxtaposition beautifully.

Exterior

The grey neutral tone of the walls contrasts against the stark white of the woodwork, plasterwork and ceilings, helping to harmonise some of the more contemporary finishes used throughout. The black steel glazing adds a tailored sharpness to the design that delivers a crisp, fresh look to the interior spaces, balanced by the soft tones of the Nordic inspired timber flooring. The particular shade of grey was carefully considered. It was imperative that the final colour had a modern look to it; and as with a lot of current grey tones, they tend to have a cooler base; but it couldn’t look clinical or cold. The final selection, Resene Zylone Sheen in Resene Quarter Tapa, has the right amount of warmth to it, and overall the result is elegant and timeless.
