Kelston Deaf Education Centre Satellite Unit

Kelston

“The design was true to classic principles of elegance and simplicity: both form and function (as it is now proving) entirely meeting the brief and exceeding expectations of the client group”. Kelston Deaf Education Centre, Head of School Architect’s Statement.

MOAI were engaged in April 2010 to undertake an initial assessment of the existing conditions at Kelston Primary School (KPS) as a precursor to the planned development of a new Kelston Deaf Education Centre (KDEC) Satellite Unit within the school. Site location studies and diagrams were completed to assess the most suitable location with significant consultation being undertaken with the Board of Trustees, KDEC, KPS Principal and teaching staff.

The new KDEC unit is sited within the upper and lower levels of the school, making it a key facility on the site and completely integrating the KDEC students with the other pupils. The building has been designed to respectfully interact with the original school buildings and form a common language, through colour, form and materials, with the recently completed administration building and the wider school environment.

In depth consultation with both KPS and the KDEC staff and students was undertaken to develop a colour palette that responded to both the existing school colour scheme while also incorporating the desires of the KDEC building users. Externally, the building relates to the surrounding school through the use of a vibrant red and grey colour palette. Internally, bold colour is tempered with warm whites and yellows, offering a balanced palette in response to the needs of deaf students who can be distracted by excessive use of bright colours. Wall finishes work with other surface finishes to minimise glare, reflection and excessive brightness. In the two classrooms, cool shades were selected for the walls and the acoustic pin board lining to the front of the rooms.

Outside striking colours of Resene Jalapeno, Resene Whizz Bang, Resene Double Masala, Resene Quarter Pravda are painted onto cladding using Resene Lumbersider, complemented by soffits/fascia in Resene Bianca and a custom metallic blend on steel columns. Inside the palette is lightened with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Half Villa White on internal walls and skirtings in Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Quarter Bianca, both accented with Resene Fuel Yellow.

Working to a tight budget, the completed building provides specialist teaching and administration spaces within a modest and highly efficient plan. Circulation space has been minimised, instead gallery spaces and open teaching and learning areas have been designed to link the two classrooms at each end of the facility, making the building a complete learning environment.
