Waikete Valley family home

This building is contemporary in design and needed to show presence within this stunning environment and reflect the reason for being – a family farmhouse. In true farmhouse tradition the use of board and batten to clad the home has been painted in Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Half Mondo. Resene Ironsand was used on the iron roof and the bagged brick spine and chimney have been painted Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Double Napa and finished with the mortar, screed in a non-uniformed trowel pattern, which complements the other rustic materials.

To highlight the building’s various forms, textures and roof styles, different colours were used on each material. The inspiration for these colours was the earthy tones apparent in nature, during our long, dry and hot summers.

Resene Double Napa was chosen as the colour for the brick cladding on the south side of this home, the chimney and each side of the entrance, this elevation mainly lives in shadow cast by the building itself. The clever design elements of this building are vast and of particular interest is the seeming appearance of a group of pods attached to the central brick wall – the spine, as viewed from the south elevation.

On the north side of the central brick wall the roof changes shape and becomes a hip roof with gable ends. In fact there are actually three styles of roof covering this one dwelling – the middle roof running the full length of the home is flat and on the entrance side (south facing) each pod is covered by a raking ceiling, whereas the north elevation is more traditional with a hip roof and gable ends.

Resene Half Mondo has been used on the north side of this home as it sits exposed to the elements – bathed in full sun during summer the outdoor room is a favourite spot. Use of a darker colour on this side visually reduces the tall, long scale of the building ensuring it remains anchored to the landscape.
