Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 02

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Construction glue, Eight 200mm square concrete blocks, Four 900mm x 200mm x 18mm MDF shelves (ours came from Mitre 10 Mega), Paintbrushes, Resene Concrete Primer, Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Red Hot and Resene Supernova, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Decadence, Stiff bristled brush

To get the look: Before painting walls and skirting, ensure surfaces are thoroughly clean and in sound condition.

How to make a playroom shelf unit

Step 1Step one
Remove sticky labels from the MDF shelves.
Step 2Step two
Brush the blocks with a stiff bristled brush to remove any dust and loose concrete material.
Step 3Step three
Prime the MDF shelves with one coat of Resene Quick Dry and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 4Step four
Prime the blocks with one coat of Resene Concrete Primer and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 5Step five
Paint the shelves with two coats of Resene Supernova, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6Step six
Paint walls and skirting with two coats of Resene Decadence, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7Step seven
Paint the blocks with two coats of Resene Red Hot, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8Step eight
Place each shelf across two blocks, fixing with a generous blob of construction glue. Stack alternate blocks and shelves, as shown. Leave glue to dry before using.

Other ideas: Paint blocks and shelves with Resene Enamacryl gloss tinted to Resene Nero to create a chic black CD shelf.
