“The blinding lights flicker and the crowd is left breathless when New York’s socialite Marien Steward sets foot out of a glamourous limousine. Her face is a mystery, hidden beneath a striking blue hat and she adorns a garment that seems rather unattainable by a common man. She exudes strength by her commanding walk, demanding the attention of all who lay eyes on her.

But only a few know the untold story of the ‘lady in blue’.

They say that when the going gets tough, she always appears in a Resene Decadence blue garment. Some say it gives her strength, the secret to her success even and perhaps they speculate correctly , for never has there been a time when this small-time girl has been photographed without her shade of Resene Decadence blue, for it truly brought her out of her darkness and into the light of a new world that is far beyond the reach of the ordinary.

The inspiration for my garment was the art deco movement and its architecture, combined with power dressing and Grace Jones’ fierce attitude and angular silhouette. The foldable asymmetric lapel also keeps the garment on track with trend forecasts that promise monochromatic tailored looks to be a mainstay next season. As for the colour, I wanted to evoke a feeling of intoxicating riches and give away only just a glimpse of a life that we long to have a taste of.”
