“Resene has been part of my life from the very start. Having a know-how, can-do family, renovations were always going on around me. With our house being built in 1910 and my parents love for redesigning, our house and property changed constantly. From digging up our yard to make way for new plants, to smashing down existing walls, I was always asked to do my bit and help. Little did I know this would become my inspiration.

Our biggest renovation came in the early 2000s when half our home was turned to nothing but bare bones. The framework, after all those years, would still stand and be left to recreate our new home. To smash down walls and roofs; the old; isn’t about destroying. To smash down is about recreating, reimagining and redesigning. To renovate.

The design for my colour, Resene Smashing, is a nod to Resene’s 75th anniversary year and its deep history in New Zealand homes. Resene Smashing is ‘bold pure red’, it is so full of provocative energy it demands centre stage. It would only be fitting for my design to incorporate a power suit. The cropped blazer represents my house and its wooden framework and wires are represented by the human skeleton rib cage and loose threads, with the bra representing the heart. Strong and powerful. The tailored pants are to show a sense of grounding, but also flow, as ideas are forever changing when renovating. Its shape represents a paintbrush stroke, bold and strong to start with, then tailing off with a flick.

My design of Resene Smashing is my interpretation of Resene’s journey with every New Zealander’s renovation.”
