“I stood there at the table, palms sweating and heart pounding, from the lack of sleep and the breath-taking feeling of anxiety, constantly wondering if the Resene colour I got was going to inspire me.

Holding my breath as the mysterious brown packages were handed out one by one, I finally received mine. Whatever this feeling was I wanted it to end. Aggressively I tore open the envelope and reached in to pull out the swatch card. There it lay, as its intense vibrancy stared at me, Resene Mariner. The room is suddenly dead silent but in reality, the noise of excited students was roaring so loud you couldn’t even hear your own breath. In that very moment I felt a weight had lifted, as if time had paused and nothing in the world mattered, I was free.

Resene Mariner isn’t just beautiful, but a breath of fresh air that gave me a sense of true freedom. Instantly I thought about the time I was in Japan, walking in the garden of a shrine, breathing in a lungful of the cool morning air as the sun was beaming. How mysterious and exciting each day was, wondering and exploring the unknown. Not worrying if I would bump into someone I knew and having a brief reunion, explaining what I had achieved in life.

I finally understood that in this world we are prisoners to our own minds. Crippled by our own limitations and expectations, ranging from the smallest of things, whether we get enough attention on social media to the position we get in our chosen career path. In the end, what was all this for? We must learn to tune into ourselves, being comfortable in our own skin, and walking into the unknown in order to progress, no matter how foreign the task. Living in our own emotions, not the ones someone else has projected onto us.“
