“When I received my colour from the Resene collection – Jailbreak – I was immediately reminded of the prison uniforms inmates are always portrayed wearing in TV and film.  I was interested in the shapes and silhouettes in the prison compounds and also thought of the moods and emotions felt by the prisoners and wanted to evoke those in my design with the use of negative space and striking silhouettes I have embodied the feeling of being trapped, confined and that of claustrophobia.

During my research I found I was really drawn to the modernist art movement, expressionism.  I think that this style of art is relevant because like the famous artists Franz Marc and Henri Matisse I have sought to express the emotional experience of being an inmate in jail rather than the physical reality.”
