Q&A   p. 11

Q. We have semi-gloss black powdercoated aluminium windows (15 years old). Is there a product that I can brush on to bring back the shine on the powder coating again?

A. While we don't have anything specifically in our range for this purpose it's likely much of the colour change you are looking at is chalking. I'd suggest trialling scrubbing down an area using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to remove the chalking. This should allow much of the underlying colour to show through again. As always, ensure you follow the instructions on the pack.

Q. I have lead based paint on the walls and ceiling of my bathroom and was told to just paint over it with an oil based sealer. Is there anything in your product base that you could recommend?

A. Providing the walls and ceilings are in good condition the use of Resene Sureseal should suit your purposes. While the words 'lead based' can be scary you shouldn't have any issues providing you don't sand the walls and ceiling and get airborne particles. You can overcoat Resene Sureseal with Resene Room Velvet on both walls and ceiling. Try to get some airflow through your bathroom when painting, this will help the curing process.

Pop into your local Resene ColorShop and they will be able to help you with any further advice or product info.

Q. I painted a feature wall with semi-gloss waterborne paint but after three coats put on with a roller I still keep getting rough patches. It is the paint, not the wall because it is smooth as a baby's bottom. I am at my wits end on why this is so! Any ideas?

A. I suspect you are getting roller marks in the paint. This may be due to the roller sleeve being used or overworking the paint when applying. Also, roller marks will be more noticeable with semi-gloss paint so you may wish to use a low sheen product such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen as the lower the sheen level the less noticeable surface imperfections are.

Q. I am painting over existing enamel door frames, doors etc and don't know whether I need Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel or Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. Does it purely come down to whether I want a low sheen or semi-gloss finish? What is the latest trend in regard to doors vs walls? Do internal doors and frames now tend to be more semi-gloss, or low sheen like the walls?

A. Traditionally the trend has been for semi-gloss or gloss on doors and trim; however the preference now seems to be towards lower sheen options. There's no wrong choice as long as you are choosing a waterborne enamel. The old rule still applies though, the higher the sheen level the better the durability and cleanaibility. So, yes, it really does come down to your preference. Mine is semi-gloss on doors and trim, low sheen on walls.

Q. I have a mobile home that has powdercoated aluminium internal walls and I would like to repaint in a decorative colour. What do I need to achieve this? Do I need to prepare the surface with a primer and then use a waterborne or solventborne product?

A. Ensure the surfaces are clean and grease free then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, leave to cure with good ventilation for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. Maintain ventilation to allow the paint system to develop adhesion and cure, this will take at least five days.

July 2015

Q. We are renovating our laundry and looking for a product, or system, to paint our terracotta floor tiles. We have around 7.5 square metres to cover. Another option would be to lighten (whitewash) the existing terracotta tiles and paint the grout. Do you have any products that may help?

A. The only system we have is a fully pigmented paint system. Assuming the tiles are porous apply a coat of Resene Sureseal then two coats of Resene Walk-on.

July 2015

Q. Do you have any products that can be painted over textured wallpaper and hide the pattern?

A. Depends upon the wallpaper texture. Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal is the only possible product (2 coats) but this will only fill a very low profile.

July 2015

Q. I am painting an old ceiling. When I put the new paint on the old paint underneath bubbles off. Can you help me with this please?

A. This is often seen when painting over an old multi-layered paint system. The stress of the new paint causes an old underlying paint layer to fail. Apart from stripping back the old system to a sound base there is unfortunately not a lot else that can be done.

July 2015

Q. I have used a semi-gloss waterborne enamel applied by airless spray on a cold day in a room heated by a diesel heater. The paint will not sand a week after application; it seems to cut the paint and clog the paper. Will it go hard?

A. A waterborne enamel can take 2-4 weeks to fully cure in ideal conditions. At this time of the year waterborne coating curing times will be much extended even with the use of heaters etc as often there isn't any airflow through the room (which is imperative with curing). The coating will slowly cure; however it's impossible to give you an accurate time frame. While it may not help you in the instance we suggest the use of oil based products such as Resene Room Velvet when curing conditions aren't ideal for waterborne coatings.

July 2015

Q. Can I get an accurate RGB for a paint colour?

A. Some paint colours translate better to RGB than others. If they are purely using them for visualisation/renders and then physical samples are used for the final choices, that is fine. If you are using it to colour match other substrates you must use the physical colour as a sample, not the electronic colour. Electronic colour representations can and do change device to device depending on colour settings, lighting, screen quality etc.

July 2015

Q. I have painted using metallic paint but it doesn't look the same as the chart.

A. The appearance of metallic paints is always dependent upon application method. Our colour charts are screen printed which is similar to what you get with a spray effect. The appearance is different when metallic paints are applied by roller but should still be uniform.

These differences arise as a result of differences in orientation of the metallic pigments, and orientation will change with application method. The appearance of a metallic paints also varies with viewing angle and the size of the aluminium pigment used to make the metallic paint. Fine aluminium pigments give a more uniform appearance irrespective of application method. The metallic flake we use for Resene metallic paints is a large size aluminium flake and this does make the viewing angle differences greater than metallic paints made with small sized aluminium pigments.

If using the colours on the wall to compare with the chart you should hold the chart vertically also, as the metallic look quite different when laid flat on a table vs a wall as they catch the light quite differently. This is often referred to as flop angle differences. Also good lighting will help get the best of the metallic effect.

July 2015

Q. I want to paint over old exterior window frames, which are currently a rich red colour. I will be painting over it with a light colour. Do I need to strip the red off with a heat gun etc? Or can I simply give it a good sand and paint over the top?

A. If the existing paintwork is sound then there should be no need to strip. If this is the case then thoroughly sand and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before applying two coats of topcoat colour.

July 2015

Q. What fire rating does Resene Zylone Sheen give on 9mm plywood?

A. Application of a three coat system consisting of a wood primer and two coats of Resene Zylone Sheen will not change the G rating of the ply; that is it will be the same as the uncoated ply which is usually G3.

July 2015

Q. Situation - townhouse 10+ years old with pine shiplap weatherboards. The existing paint (light blue-ish) is seriously overdue for painting and is flaking or non-existent in areas, splitting, etc. Problem - weatherboards, particularly on the sunny side, have developed fine splits/cracks especially where wood is directly exposed to the weather/sun, est 75 %. Splits/cracks present on all boards, a uniform finish of splits if you like. Know from experience even with best prep and usual premium paint system, paint will break down along splits within 1-2 years.

Pine weatherboards + sun + splits/cracks = non standard approach.

What is the best paint system to use, assuming excellent prep and highly experienced painter?

A. If the existing paint can be TOTALLY removed back to bare timber the best way forward would be to stain. Yes it's higher maintenance but avoids cracking/splitting of a film forming paint finish.

July 2015

Q. I have bought an older house where the ceiling in the kitchen and dining area, side by side rooms, had patterned wallpaper on the ceilings. Now I have taken the wallpaper off the marks of the paper design are still on the ceiling but are brown and I can't get the paint to hide it; they just keep showing through.

A. The brown staining is due to stains that are activated by application of a waterborne paint. Apply a coat of Resene StainLock then two coats of Resene Ceiling Paint and the staining problem should be history.

July 2015

Q. Stains on surface to be painted deposited by mounted fly spray dispensers. Seems difficult to deal with. What is the best way?

A. Wipe the affected areas down using Resene Emulsifiable Solvent Cleaner, then wipe well with water (change the water often) until the water wash remains clear. Then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and Resene StainLock before applying two coats of a waterborne wall paint such as Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

July 2015

Q. Do you have a waterborne sealer that I can use over my toys that I've painted in acrylics?

A. Resene Aquaclear.

July 2015

Q. I have taken the wallpaper off my wall only to discover that the plastered wall has big patches of old paint stuck to it. I do not want to line it. Any idea how I can cover it before I paint it in a light colour?

A. Sand the old painted areas then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal to any bare paperfaced board and stoppings then apply a full coat of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal.

July 2015

Q. We are using the Resene Colorwood Whitewash to paint the interior of our home - it's a Lockwood style house. My question is, we've had to apply two coats to get close to the look we're trying to achieve, and it seems to fade after a few days, and even more so after a few weeks. Is this normal? We are painting over timber that was coated with a varnish. We have washed the walls and allowed to dry, but we didn't sand the walls as we were told this wasn't necessary, which is a big part of why we chose the product. Just wondering if you can shed some light on what might be happening, or if we're doing something wrong. The left side of the wall had two coats, as did the right side, but the left side was painted about a week earlier and is now much darker than the right.

A. The whitewash effect cannot fade as it is achieved using a white pigment which is completely stable. Usually only a single coat is required but if the existing varnish has become very dark extra coats may be required to achieve the level of whiteness.

Some walls may be more or less exposed to the sun so may have a different starting colour and need a different number of coats.

July 2015

Q. I am painting one bedroom in my house and I am using Resene Ceiling paint and Resene Lumbersider in a quarter strength of the colour. I am having a lot of trouble getting this colour in a 4L can. I have been forced to buy a 10L pail because the shop employee cannot break the colour down into a 4L can. I see no point in having colours that do not break down. Every colour I have ever used over 40 years has been broken down to quarter, why not this colour?

A. Resene tinters are very high quality and concentrated which means you don't need as much to make a colour. The less tinter used to make a colour usually the better the durability and performance.

With a colour at a quarter strength the amount of a specific tinter can be tiny. Tint machines can only tint in set minimum amounts. If a quarter colour cannot be tinted in a smaller size it means at least one of the tinter amounts is below the minimum dose the tint machine can measure, so the colour cannot be tinted accurately.

When Resene designs our colours we endeavour to have ones that can break down into smaller pack sizes to give customers as much choice of pack size as possible. This works well for most colours.

For some colours the quarter strength unfortunately has a tinter mix that the tint machine cannot accurately measure in small pack sizes. Because of this our colour lab will restrict the formula so it is only available in sizes where a consistent colour can be tinted.

If you were able to switch colours store staff could suggest other similar colours that can be tinted into smaller amounts.

July 2015

Q. We have inherited a bathroom that has Hardiglaze™ tile panelling on the bottom half and hardboard on the top. I am going to paint it all one colour. Please advise what prep I need to do on the Hardiglaze™. And what type of Resene paint will I need for it all? The bathroom is well ventilated even in winter.

A. The following only applies to Hardiglaze™ paneling that is outside of a shower enclosure. Clean down with Sugar Soap and a cleaner to remove any grease and soap scum then wipe clean with water and a cloth. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for at least 48 hours with good ventilation. Then apply two coats of any Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel. The system must be protected from steam for 36 hours. It's best to heat the area after painting and again maintain good ventilation.

July 2015

Q. We want to repaint the deck to get 3-5 more years before replacement but the old white shows though the new red. Is there a faster way than stripping the old white first as there is approx 45 square metres of deck?

A. Power sanding would be the quickest way to remove old paint from the smooth boards; you may have to resort to a paint stripper for profiled areas.

July 2015

Q. I want to put railway sleepers inside. But am worried about the toxins in them. So thinking about a plastic coating. Would this work? If I splash water on the sleeper it beads up.

A. It sounds as though the surface is contained with oil deposits of some type and application of a waterborne paint will result in poor adhesion. The only possibility would be to use multiple coats of a solventborne clear such as Resene Polythane but this will give a gloss finish. You will need at least 3 coats. It will generate odour and this requires good ventilation for at least a week and ventilation of solvents to the exterior.

July 2015

Q. I'm currently renovating and painting the first room in our house. I've stripped wallpaper and used a pigmented sealer followed by Resene Broadwall Prep and Seal. After applying and sanding there have been ridges from where my prep work wasn't up to scratch and weren't able to be hidden by the paint. I've gone over these areas with Gib Plus 4® to smooth and feather out.

Do I need to go over these touched up areas with pigmented sealer again followed by more Resene Broadwall Prep and Seal or would you just undercoat these areas as the Resene Broadwall Prep and Seal will make it too thick in these parts?

Also I don't think it's from anything I've done wrong but I can still see textural differences in the wall from where the Resene Broadwall Prep and Seal has been applied to the plasterboard as opposed to plaster areas. It's a lot smoother surface over the plastered areas as opposed to the plasterboard texture in the plasterboard areas.

After sanding do you wash down the walls with soapy water or just dust them and not get the walls wet?

A. All stopping compounds must be sealed before applying two coats of wall paint. After sanding dust down to remove dust. Wipe with clean water and a cloth to remove residual dust.

July 2015

Q. I have a Touchwood cot for a child. It's secondhand and I want to paint over the teeth marks left by the previous child who used it. What is the safest paint for this?

A. Sand the painted timber using 220 grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key for subsequent paint (remove any sharp points) then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Allow to cure for two weeks in a well-ventilated area then wipe the new paintwork down with warm water and a cloth before using, rinse cloth often.

July 2015

Q. We stained our deck, not very well, with a dark stain and wish we had limewashed it. Is it still possible to do this by cleaning and waterblasting it under low pressure first?

A. To restain with a whitewash effect you would have to remove all of the dark stain as residual dark stain will telegraph through the whitewash stain coat. Care is needed if waterblasting timber to ensure that the timber surface is not damaged.

August 2015

Q. I have a group of students who want to paint small jars. What type of paint should they use? Cheapest option please. Have been told that if they add glue to paint it will be ok?

A. Resene testpots (waterborne paint) will adhere to glass but not tenaciously. Addition of PVA glue can actually have a detrimental effect on the paint.

August 2015

Q. Would Resene Deep Clean be suitable for use on a tar sealed driveway?

A. Yes you can use Resene Deep Clean on almost any exterior surface.

August 2015

Q. Is there any problem with painting waterbased paint over oil-based paint? It is exterior and has been sanded.

A. We recommend that you apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat to the sanded dust free enamel.

August 2015

Q. Our house was rendered 15 years ago but never painted (colour was in the render mix). I want to paint it, most likely using Resene Lumbersider. Is this the most suitable Resene product? Do I need to apply a sealer undercoat first?

A. Best option would be to use a pigmented sealer such as Resene Sureseal first. This will penetrate the surface and bind up any powdery residues etc on the surface. Apply Resene Lumbersider over the Resene Sureseal.

August 2015

Q. I am looking to paint RHS steel in a metallic finish for interior conditions and would prefer a paint system that can be applied using a roller. I understand that the Resene Enamacryl Metallic four coat system could be suitable, if not ideal, and I wanted to check that I am correct in that understanding. Please advise: wire brushing of steel RHS, 1 coat Resene Quick Dry sealer/primer, 1 coat Resene Lumbersider base colour and 2 coats Resene Enamacryl Metallic.

A. Assuming the steel is unpainted Mild Steel and not Galvanised you need to swap out the Resene Quick Dry for Resene Rust Arrest.

August 2015

Q. Can I paint my kitchen's Formica® bench top? And what kind of paint would you suggest?

A. Clean down the bench top using Jif® type cleaner then wipe clean. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for at least 48 hour (avoid water contact for the first 24 hours) then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. For best results roll apply the Resene Lustacryl. This will give a slightly textured finish. The adhesion and cure of the system will take a minimum of five days to develop. For at least the first 48 hours after application of the waterborne enamel finish try to avoid water contact with the new paint. The painted Formica will not have the hardness of the original laminate.

August 2015

Q. We are renovating our laundry and looking for a product, or system, to paint our terracotta floor tiles. We have around 7.5 sqm to cover. Another option would be to lighten ('white wash') the existing terracotta tiles and paint the grout. Do you have any products that may help?

A. The only system we have is a fully pigmented paint system. Assuming the tiles are porous apply a coat of Resene Sureseal then 2 coats of Resene Walk-on.

August 2015

Q. What do you recommend to paint the inside surface of a decorative shallow pool? The pool will be new concrete, 300mm deep, and will have goldfish and plants in sunken baskets.

A. The only product would be Resene ArmourChlor HBF; apply a seal coat of the paint thinned 15% with Resene Thinner No.6 then 2 unthinned coats. Leave to cure with exposure to water for a minimum of 7 days (ensure good ventilation). Then rinse out 6 times with fresh water and discard washings each time. Fill and introduce one fish and check if the fish does not suffer any ill effects after two days. If all goes well then add the remaining fish and plants to the pool.

August 2015

Q. I am looking for a non-toxic varnish for kids' furniture. It is made of MDF. Which product is suitable?

A. We recommend Resene Aquaclear.

August 2015

Q. My question is about old French doors that have varnish on them. There are mould and ugly black stains. How do I fix the problem? Can I use stain to revive the timber and apply vanish on the top?

A. The mould growth and staining is likely to be beneath the varnish layer. The only way to address this is to completely strip the varnish from the timber, treat the timber with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, stain with Resene Colorwood stain then apply three coats of varnish.

If the doors are exterior then a solid paint finish should be applied. After carrying out the above prep, prime the bare wood with Resene Wood Primer, apply an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

August 2015

Q. Is it possible to put white undercoat on tanalised timber and finish with white sheen?

A. We would recommend priming with Resene Wood Primer before application of two coats of a waterborne topcoat.

August 2015

Q. Which is the darker colour – Resene Solitaire or Resene Double Solitaire?

A. The double versions of colours are always darker.

August 2015

Q. I am building a laminated macrocarpa laundry benchtop and would like to seal it. As much as I like your oils I would prefer to use a moisture cured non-yellowing polyurethane. Is this the best choice and which one?

A. Would endorse use of an MU polyurethane (four coats). The Resene product to use is Resene Polythane.

August 2015

Q. I have painted the walls with a Resene enamel primer, turps clean up. Can I paint over this with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel?

A. Yes this is fine to do.

August 2015

Q. I had a fire in my kitchen which left soot on the ceiling. Can you advise on the best prep for repainting?

A. Wipe down using Resene Emulsfiable Solvent Cleaner then wipe down with a fresh cloth. Wring the cloth in water replacing the water often until the rinse water remains clear. Then apply a full coat of Resene Sureseal before applying two coats of a waterborne paint finish.

August 2015

Q. What primer/sealer would be best over wallpaper glue residue on masonry block?

A. We recommend Resene Sureseal.

August 2015

Q. Will a waterborne full gloss paint stick, cover and match a two pack epoxy paint?

A. Depends upon the epoxy recoat time. It's always best to degrease an epoxy and sand it before topcoating with any standard waterborne topcoat.

August 2015

Q. I am coating a concrete block wall, probably by painting it. It is part of a building. It is on the boundary and the neighbour wants to grow weeping fig on it. My questions are, what is the best paint product for this purpose, and would it be resistant to damage from weeping fig roots - for weeping fig, think ivy?

A. Any climbing plant that has tendrils to anchor itself will potentially damage a paint finish. Resene X-200 is our recommended paint system for concrete block walls but we know that ivy does attach to the painted surface and if pulled off it can cause paint adhesion to fail.

August 2015

Q. I am looking at buying a house with plastic PVC weatherboards. Is it possible to paint these?

A. Yes the plastic used to make the weatherboards is PVC, the same plastic used for guttering and downpipes. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to achieve a chalk free surface then apply two coats of any Resene exterior acrylic paint. If the cladding has never been painted I would stay away from using a dark colour. If you do go down the road of dark colours then use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour.

August 2015

Q. We have painted our internal walls with Resene Zylone Sheen. We are going to put up large decal stickers on the walls. But I am wondering how long we should wait for the paint to dry completely so as not to damage the paint if we take the decals off.

A. Two weeks with good ventilation should be sufficient. Also suggest that you wipe the entire wall down with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, rinsing the cloth out and changing the water often and allow the wall to dry before applying the decal.

August 2015

Q. I have a horse float and I want to repaint its fibreglass top. I have filled holes with epoxy resin and sanded back with 80 grit. What is the best undercoat sealer and topcoat to use please?

A. Apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 and then finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.

August 2015

Q. Our school has a large mural down a hallway that was smoothed with dry wall mud prior to painting it. It is now more prone to gouges. Will putting a varnish on it help it from getting chipped or not?

A. Clear coating can protect a painted mural from damage including graffiti tagging. But the ideal time to apply is at the end of the mural painting.

August 2015

Q. I have a door which was purchased in the USA. It's made of fibreglass and I want to know if you have a paint or stain which would be suitable for that material. The door is from the ThermaTru brand Fiber Classic Oak.

A. Based on the USA info you can use any Resene exterior acrylic paint; however two painted surfaces cannot come into contact otherwise the painted surfaces will fuse. Alternatively to overcome this use Resene Enamacryl or Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. Scrub the surface down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label directions prior to painting.

August 2015

Q. The varnish finish on the wood surrounding a number of our windows is showing the effect of 15 years sun and light. To re-varnish what is the best preparation and varnish? I have done one window and it turned out a little patchy. Maybe the prep was not the best.

A. Removal of water staining back to a uniform timber colour is often very difficult. You will need to completely strip the old varnish back to bare. Treat for mould using Resene Moss & Mould Killer and thoroughly sand. Then apply a coat of Resene TimberLock followed by three coats of a Resene Qristal solventborne varnish. This works well if the timber is dark colour. The Resene TimberLock is orange brown in colour.

August 2015

Q. I see people using chalk paint as an oven splashback in their kitchen. Wouldn't it get oil on it that would be difficult to remove?

A. We do not recommend using conventional waterborne paints (which includes chalk style paints) for splashbacks.

August 2015

Q. What paint can I use to get a chalk paint style finish?

A. You can achieve the same kind of finish with Resene SpaceCote Flat with the added benefit of it being a waterborne enamel so it is block resistant and can be used in wet areas (e.g. bathrooms, kitchens etc).

August 2015

Q. How do I know if a paint is waterbased or oil based?

A. Clean an area down to ensure it is chalk free then take a cloth and wet it with meths and rub the painted surface. If the paint dissolves or there is pigment transfer to the cloth then it will usually be a waterborne coating.

August 2015

Q. My Mum has two fences she wants painted black; one is timber, the other corrugated iron. What paint would be the best to use?

A. If both substrates are appropriately primed then any Resene exterior acrylic finish (two coats) can be applied. However if new then Resene Lumbersider is the timber finish and Resene Summit the metal finish. Given the colour choice we recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ black version.

August 2015

Q. Was wondering how long after painting a bathroom (walls and ceiling) is it ok to use the shower?

A. The time is temperature and ventilation dependent. Usually a minimum of 3 days with warm conditions and ventilation is the standard recommendation.

August 2015

Q. I'm wondering whether the Resene FX Fluoro is weather-resistant and would be suitable for painting the handles of gardening tools, especially small items like trowels.

A. The FX Fluoro can be used for things used outside. You would need to use a white basecoat first, then the fluoro and then finish it in Resene Clearcoat UVS – a clear gloss finish that will give it added protection.

August 2015

Q. I have a door painted with Resene Lumbersider. Can I paint over it with Resene Lustacryl to give a more durable/suitable finish?

A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before applying the two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

August 2015

Q. I need a paint spec for bagged masonry veneer.

A. Assuming you are after a 'weathertight' solution and the bagged masonry veneer is new and uncoated, our most common system would be:
1 coat of Resene Limelock
2 coats of Resene X-200 (egg shell type finish

If you are after a flat 'Mediterranean' effect 1 coat of Resene AquaShield over the Resene X-200 will achieve this. Resene AquaShield has a water repellent nature, which minimises dirt pickup on the surface.

Best to have a look at a samples of both Resene X-200 and Resene AquaShield to make sure you're selecting the type of finish you require. You can view samples at your local Resene ColorShop.

If you'd like a site specific specification we'd be more than happy to have one of our Trade Team make contact.

August 2015

Q. I am building a coffee table out of pine and painting the surface to give a distressed driftwood look with stain and patches of colour. The surface needs to be durable against the usual knocks and bumps of hot coffee cups and plates etc. Does Resene have a suitable water-based stain and paint that's up to the job or do I need to go to an oil based system? Can you also recommend a clear matt (preferably water based) finish?

A. Polyurethaning over old paint etc is the easy part here, the old stain/oil on the timber may present an issue as it's unknown. Waterborne polyurethanes (Resene Aquaclear) are the safest to use as they generally don't have an adverse effect on the old paint coatings. The old stain/oil will need to be 'hard dry' and not oily to touch. I'd recommend trialling an area first to ensure there isn't a reaction with the old stain/oil. If there is you may need to wipe the surface down with Resene Thinner No.2 (allow to dry).

If you are wanting to add stain etc our interior penetrating stain - Resene Colorwood - can be overcoated with polyurethanes no problem and you could use any of a number of our products if you wish to paint the surface then rub off to achieve that distressed look - (Resene Lustacryl may be a good option - waterbased enamel). Prime bare areas first with Resene Quick Dry.

As for the hot coffee mug issue it's always best to use coasters and place mats to avoid marks from hot cups or marks from plates.

August 2015

Q. Would Resene Rust Arrest or Resene Vinyl Etch be the best surface prep for rusty Rinnai gas califont covers that are outside and exposed to salt spray? Would Resene Enamacryl be suitable for topcoats?

A. Resene Rust-Arrest would be the best primer. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash to label then remove all corrosion and loose paint using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc, then prime. A conventional enamel topcoat system will give a harder finish.

September 2015

Q. I am wanting to paint a fibreglass play slide at the school I work for. What is the best way to go about this task and what is the best paint to use?

A. Degrease then apply a coat of an epoxy primer and finish with a two pack polyurethane.

September 2015

Q. Need a recommendation for paint for a new plasterboard ceiling in a bathroom and kitchen. I need a primer/sealant and finisher.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Sureseal followed by a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Room Velvet.

Q. Do you have to back roll when applying sealer/undercoat to new plasterboard interior? I am having a debate with a plasterer saying I need to, to hide the plastered joins. I believe it is due to not enough sanding or box application.

A. Sealers for new stopped plasterboard are designed to produce a surface with uniform porosity and not to hide surface defects. While back rolling can produce a surface texture, which may hide surface irregularities, this is not a given. Suggest you look to roll on 1 or 2 coats of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal in the situation you describe.

Q. What paint system would you recommend for new Hardiflex™ exterior wall linings?

A. Prime with Resene Concrete Primer and then apply two coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

Q. We have a galvanised gate (large) which we want to paint black. Have had two differing opinions on preparation - one to wash with sugar soap and then paint with a spray can. The other to let it weather, then undercoat and then spray paint. Could you please advise? Especially on the need to undercoat or not.

A. Paint as soon as possible. Sugar Soap is really only a degreaser which is not necessary for this application. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash then prime with Resene Galvo-Prime and two coats of Resene Summit. You are located in a corrosive zone and while spray cans may appear easier to use you cannot apply these direct to galvanising and you must prime with a dedicated galvanised iron primer. Painting on the topcoat will also avoid overspray that can be an issue with spray cans.

Q. Is it best to use a water based or oil based undercoat on plaster joins? I will be using ceiling white over the top.

A. For non-wet areas you can use Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard sealer or for wet areas such as bathrooms Resene Sureseal (oil based). Resene Sureseal can be used for both wet and non-wet areas.

Q. I am wanting to paint some white lines to mark car parking spaces on concrete (not asphalt). The lines will be painted on the back wall of a carport. This wall is a concrete retaining wall for the property next door. Can you please advise what type of paint we would need to use?

A. Suggest you use Resene Lumbersider.

Q. We've only just had subcontractors paint this bathroom and the client is concerned about streaking marks. Is this due to poor paint prep or application or are the streaks simply condensation, considering it's in the bathroom?

A. I suspect that the issue is surfactant leaching, please refer to our information about this. This is not a paint fault but due to application and drying conditions before the new paint is subjected to condensation.

Q. We wish to paint over the Lockwood interior of our house, which is varnished wood. What is the process and what products are needed?

A. Clean down the surfaces to be painted with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours before overcoating with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

The paint system will take five days to develop good adhesion so care must be taken not to damage the new paint until cure has reached this point. The interior boards of a Lockwood construction can move and this may reveal a line of the original varnish system.

Q. I am looking to paint over some old wallpaper that has already been painted before. The condition is fine and all edges that have come up have been re-glued but I was just wondering because it is already painted can I just go straight to a topcoat, or do I need to put on a primer first?

A. If the existing paint is waterborne then more than likely no need but you could apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat prior to applying two coats of Resene waterborne wall paint.

Q. Can I paint over silicone sealant with Resene exterior paint?

A. Only if the sealant is paintable. This detail should be on the sealant cartridge.

Q. My query relates to your Resene X-200 weathertight membrane coating over an exterior concrete masonry block wall. Can you please advise what warranty you offer for this product, and what (if any) maintenance requirements you may have for any such warrantee to be valid? An indication as to the frequency of recoating the wall would also be of interest.

A. What is the condition of the masonry, painted or not? As a result of CCANZ CP 01 2014 document we no longer refer to waterproofing but now define the coating as a weather tight coating system. To meet the definition of waterproof the coating system must exclude both liquid water and moisture vapour from getting to the substrate. There are no waterborne paint system membranes that can claim the latter feature.

Q. I am considering painting the interior walls downstairs in our recently bought house. I am unsure what type of paint is on the walls. How can I tell if it is acrylic or enamel? If it is enamel is there a product I can prime them with so that I can paint over with acrylic? If it is already acrylic do I need to use an undercoat? The walls are a mixture of hardboard and softboard.

A. Softening or dissolution of paint upon contact with methylated spirits is the standard test used to determine if the paint is an acrylic (waterborne). Clean down a small area using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. Take a cloth of contrasting colour to the paint colour, wet with methylated spirits then immediately apply to the paint and gently rub. Check for softening of the paint or colour transfer onto the cloth. If either occurs then it is more than likely a waterborne paint.

If the paint is an acrylic then you could apply a Resene waterborne wall paint to the clean surface but given the brand of paint is unknown it would be sensible to apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before applying two coats of topcoat. If the paint is an enamel (does not soften) with meths the best prep is to sand with 180 grit sand paper, dust off then apply the Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and topcoat as before. Note any bare areas of hardwood will need to be primed with Resene Sureseal, and the same sealer can be used for bare areas of paperfaced plasterboard. If you visit your local Resene ColorShop the ColorShop staff can assist you with topcoat and colour selection.

Q. We are repainting a 100 year old weatherboard home. Just have a few questions on which paint to use in the following areas. We are after a low sheen weatherboard finish so I assume Resene Lumbersider is the best product for that. What about window frames and surrounds? We are not necessarily after more than a low sheen finish in those areas. What about painting brick and painting render?

A. Resene Lumbersider for the weatherboards and Resene Lustacryl for windows and trim.

Q. How sensible is it to paint a fibrolite house black? The current paint is coloured tobacco and has been there for over thirty years with no ill effects.

A. In principle there is no reason why you could not paint the cladding black. From experience we do see loss of adhesion (blistering) of the existing paint system occurring when old paint systems on fibrolite are painted in dark colours such as black that absorb heat. While Resene CoolColour™ Black would reduce the risk of blistering we cannot guarantee that there will be no issues. CoolColour technology increases the amount of heat reflected (total solar reflectance) compared to the same colour formulated using non cool pigments. I note that given the age of the cladding you may need to exercise care when preparing for repainting as the cladding may contain asbestos.

Q. What preparation is required to paint Oamaru stone that has had one coat many years ago?

A. We do not recommend applying film forming paints to Oamaru stone as the stone surface is weak and friable which impacts upon paint adhesion.

Q. I have 20 year old kitchen cupboards which were professionally sprayed with polyurethane white paint. Over the years they have deteriorated in colour. Does Resene have a product that I could carefully repaint these cupboards with, perhaps with some light sanding with fine sandpaper, beforehand?

A. We should be able to match the paint colour if you can bring in a sample but you will need to spray apply to match the finish.

September 2015

Q. I require the group number for the local council, re the fire rating for your interior Resene Colorwood stain range.

A. The group rating does not apply to a coating alone. The G rating is determined by the substrate. If the substrate is timber then the G rating of the coated timber will be the same as the uncoated timber.

September 2015

Q. Regarding the Resene Magnetic Magic paint would there be any concerns using this within a bedroom? Does the iron oxide interfere with wifi?

A. It will attenuate RF signals. There are two components - one is more effective with lower frequencies in the MHz range so not an issue but the other will be effective at 2.4 GHz. At the film thickness we are talking about attenuation will be low so even painting an entire wall shouldn't attenuate drastically unless the device being used is already at the limit of wifi range.
