Q. I have a wall lined with IBS Panelling V Groove MDF sheets. I am seeking advice in regards to the best painting system to use. The panels are not preprimed and I am concerned that the panel may swell a little if I use a water type primer. A. The only primer we recommend for priming MDF is Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. We have not seen any significant swelling when applied to MDF. MDF contains waxes and these can be liberated and end up on the surface if a solventborne primer is used. August 2016
Q. Our barn that is being built in ply and battens every 400mm is going to be painted. We live in Central Otago and the colour may be Resene Napa but we don't want to go really dark. What product would I use to paint? A. Apply a base coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat (assume it is pine ply) and then two coats of your colour tinted to the Resene CoolColour™ version in Resene Lumbersider. August 2016
Q. I painted our plaster home with Resene X-200 four years ago. The Butynol roof has produced run off stains in several places. Is there a product that will remove the stain? A. The dark staining is from carbon used to colour the Butynol, and as the Butynol surface oxidises with weathering the carbon particles are released. Not aware of any easy way to remove this from an acrylic painted surface, the only long term solution is to paint the Butynol. August 2016
Q. I want to get a room skimmed and am needing to seal it first. It is on the original plasterboard from the 50s (kind of a soft brown board). What product do you recommend for this? A. Resene Sureseal. August 2016
Q. I am trying to find a paint that I can use to apply to a window. I am trying to design a sign for a cafe window and was wondering if you knew of any paints that would be suitable to apply to glass that would not be wiped off easily. A. While we do have specific paint for glass it is a two pack product. Standard solventborne enamels such as Resene Super Gloss will give good adhesion to glass as long as the glass is clean. August 2016
Q. We have cedar beams in our lounge that have been stained with a stain varnish. We want to paint the ceiling and beams to modernise the room. What should we use as a first coat? A. To get adhesion to the existing varnish apply a thin coat (this product is not designed to give opacity or high film build) of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, leave to cure for 48 hours then you can apply any Resene waterborne interior paint. August 2016
Q. Can you use Resene Moss & Mould Killer on a COLORSTEEL® Versatile garage? A. Diluted Resene Moss & Mould Killer can be used to treat moss/mould on this substrate. Just take care to avoid application to glass. August 2016
Q. I wish to paint some polished aluminium tube black. I would prefer a low gloss or even matt finish. It has been suggested that an etch primer may work. A. Resene Vinyl Etch Black. August 2016
Q. We are getting a new timber deck built at the moment. Before it is used we would like to protect it. What is the best product for this job? A. Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman wood oil stain. August 2016 |
Q. We have some badly weather beaten wooden windows. Last time they were painted it did not adhere to the timber and has lifted. It is susceptible to extreme hot and cold as well. What should we use to seal and prime the timber? It is cedar sashes and rimu sills and frames. A. The primer we would recommend would be Resene Wood Primer topcoated with two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat (use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour if the topcoat colour is available as a CoolColour). August 2016
Q. We are investigating nonslip surfaces on public timber outdoor boardwalks and are looking at the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path paint. Can you advise if any samples have been done on rough sawn timber? A. Slip resistance testing is always done by application to a smooth surface; there is no way to establish a grading of rough sawn so any test result would only be applicable to the particular profile that was tested. August 2016
Q. We are looking to spec a green paint for a commercial carpark, to be applied directly onto the asphalt. Do you have a product that would be durable and slip resistant? A. You could use Resene Non Skid Deck and Path. August 2016
Q. I am going to paint the exterior of our 10 year old home this spring with Resene Lumbersider, low sheen in the same colour as before. Cladding is plaster over brick. It hasn't been painted since built. I notice in some lights there are very fine cracks in the plaster. Should these have a preparation before final paint? They are very fine and if left could deteriorate, but may be too fine for a filler to penetrate. A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Spot prime areas of hairline cracking (if the cracking is associated with joints then expert opinion must be sought before painting is undertaken) with Resene X-200 then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider. Note that the new paint system will not alter the weathertightness of the exterior cladding. August 2016
Q. I want to stain woodgrain Hardiplank®. What should I use? A. Resene Forester. August 2016
Q. I recently purchased a property. The previous owner left many tins of Resene paints behind. Most of them were purchased two years ago. I wonder if I can still use them now? A. If the paint has been stored in a well closed tin under cool conditions it should still be useable. August 2016
Q. What paint is recommended to spray new internal doors? The colour is Resene Rice Cake and I want a semi-gloss to low gloss. The doors are timber and plywood; they came preprimed. A. We have Resene Lustacryl (waterborne semi-gloss) or Resene Lusta-Glo (solventborne enamel); while both can be sprayed they are formulated mainly for brush/roller application. August 2016
Q. I painted a roof (approx. 15 sq. m) in marginal conditions and some of the paint film has washed off overnight. What should I do before repainting in warmer weather please? A. Wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions. August 2016
Q. What undercoat and topcoats do you recommend for a tiled roof? Trying to avoid membranes if I can. My gun doesn't like them too well. A. Achieving a totally clean roof is the key to a successful painting outcome. The roof must be cleaned to remove moss/lichen/algal growth and joints need to be raked out to remove accumulated material. Double treatment with Resene Moss & Mould Killer is the common way to deal with surface contamination. After treatment lichen will need to be left for a time to die and then detach. Then apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal and two coats of Resene Summit Roof. August 2016
Q. Can I use outside roof paint on my walls inside? A. Roof paints are formulated for exterior application; when used inside they are often not suitable as they do not have the robust features required for an interior wall paint such as hardness and scrub resistance. August 2016
Q. I have Tawa floors and would like a light finish to them. Should I blonde them then lacquer or should I just lacquer them? A. Tawa has a white to pale brown coloured heartwood with a straight grain and fine texture. Suggest that if you have a small off cut or can get a piece of the timber that matches your colour that you try a test to see if you can achieve what you are wanting. You can apply a stain coat of Resene Colorwood Rock Salt and then topcoat with a waterborne clear varnish such as Resene Aquaclear. You can add a pottle of Resene Colorwood Enhance White to a litre of clear for increased depth of whiteness. August 2016
Q. We need to paint a wood scotia that has been stained and then varnished. The stain is a dark brown. How should we prep the surfaces before painting? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, then for best results sand (no need to remove the existing varnish layers) and apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Leave the sealer to cure for 48 hours with good ventilation then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. The paint system will take 7-14 days to achieve adhesion and hardness but full cure will not occur until a month after application. August 2016
Q. I am looking to paint my kitchen cupboard doors and wanted to know which of your paint products you would recommend to be tough and reasonably stain resistant. I prefer a semi-gloss or satin finish. A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease. Pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate. August 2016
Q. I am painting an external mural (an underwater ocean scene) and your Resene Hi-Glo waterborne gloss paint exterior seems to be the right product to use. Is that correct? A. Most artists use Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne paint for murals (this is the paint that is also in most of our testpots), but you could use Resene Hi-Glo if you preferred a glossy finish. August 2016
Q. How do I prepare varnished pine kitchen chairs for painting? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours before applying two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The paint system will take 7-14 days to harden. September 2016
Q. I need to paint over an oil based painted wall. I know I need to undercoat the wall first, but, will any undercoat do? I want to repaint the walls in an acrylic semi-gloss. Or, is there some kind of special undercoat that needs to be used when putting on undercoat on top of oil based paints? A. For best results clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, sand the enamel dust off then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat then apply the two coats of waterborne topcoat paint. September 2016
Q. We have a shower room... Inherited... It's painted - from ceiling, walls down to and including the floor. It's in a fairly good state; however, I'd like it repainted. Do you have a range of paint suitable for a wet room? We think it has been finished in car paint that's been spray applied (previous owner worked in a paint and panel shop). A. Then it's more than likely a two pack automotive paint. To repaint sand thoroughly then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. The system will take at least 48 hours to cure so should be protected from water or condensation for at least this time. This system can be used in any wet area with the exception of a shower lining. September 2016
Q. I have some exterior ply I am looking to repaint. It is in very good condition and is painted with Resene Sonyx 101. Can I repaint directly over Resene Sonyx 101 with Resene Lumbersider or do I need to undercoat it first? A. If the Resene Sonyx 101 is sound clean down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions and then you can recoat with two coats of Resene Lumbersider. September 2016
Q. I have a mahogany deck. It is about 6 years old and I have just waterblasted it. I will also be adding a small amount of new decking. I am looking to put a stain on, neutral colour or no colour if possible. What do you recommend? A. I would use Resene Woodsman wood oil stain. September 2016
Q. What paint do you suggest to hide old plasterboard wall imperfections, rather than replacing the plasterboard? It is already painted. A. The ability of paint to hide surface imperfections depends upon the depth of the imperfections. Typically a film build of 35-40 microns is achieved per coat for application of standard paints, two coats is the equivalent of the thickness of standard cello-tape. We do have a high build product Resene Broadwall 3 in 1 which can be applied up to 1mm but this requires specific spray equipment for application. September 2016
Q. I need to paint compressed PVC with a matt black paint. What do I use for a primer if I want to use Resene FilmPro matt black paint for the finish? This is for a wall divider routered out of 20mm material. A. If the topcoat finish is black then prime with the darkest Resene Acrylic Undercoat Varishade colour. While Resene FilmPro is a Flat Black it does not have the burnish resistance for this application, Resene SpaceCote Flat would be a better topcoat option. September 2016
Q. Can I use my airless spray gun to spray a two pack paint? A. In principle yes but it will be depend on the paint; as long as the product to be sprayed can achieve higher wet film thicknesses when spray applied to a vertical surface without sagging or curtaining. September 2016
Q. What product would you recommend to paint internal exposed LVL beams? (white) A. Prime with Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. September 2016
Q. I have steps to my house which are painted. I need to rejuvenate them as the paint is worn out in some places and soiled. What type of paint and what kind of preparation/cleaning is required? A. You will need to strip the coatings back to bare concrete, and then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and two coats of Resene Walk-on. September 2016
Q. What are the steps required to paint a new Zincalume™ roller garage door? A. Scrub down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions. Then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo-Prime then finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 in a CoolColour™ formulation. September 2016
Q. Is Resene Mould & Moss Killer the best thing to use on Decramastic tiles to keep them clean and free of moss and mould or is there another product you would recommend? A. We recommend Resene Deep Clean. This is a cleaner that works over time with the weather to clean the surface. September 2016
Q. I have a cedar bach that we are currently extending. The existing cedar hasn't been treated for years and is dry and showing various shades of colour. What products and techniques can I use to protect both the new and the old cedar? I prefer the natural coloured look of cedar. I understand the two cedars will always be different but is there any way they can be made more alike and weather together? A. The dark cedar colour is due to mould infestation. Treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions. Then apply two coats of Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain. September 2016
Q. I have laminate/Formica bench tops and splashback (1984 house). Is there a Resene product(s) to change the colour? And what is the process? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow curing without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl (semi-gloss). September 2016
Q. I had my kitchen spray painted a few years ago, and the paint started to chip away far sooner than I would have expected (within the first month). Not only did it chip, but rather than going back to the previous colour it went right back to the MDF or whatever material the cupboards were made of. I intend to do the repaint myself. What do I need to do? A. You will need to sand back to bare substrate and then prime with a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply two coats of Resume Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. September 2016
Q. We have new unpainted garden walls built with cement fibre board. What paint options would you recommend, ideally with a textured finish, but all options considered? Also can the same product be used over a bituminous primer? The back filled areas are filled with soil and have been sealed with 3 coats of bituminous paint and with a layer of polythene between the boards and soil. A. Irrespective of topcoat apply a prime coat of Resene Concrete Primer. For a light sand- ike texture apply two coats of Resene Sandtex; alternatively apply one of the Resene Resitex textures (these must be spray applied). September 2016
Q. Is there a special paint required for media walls, i.e. a green wall in a studio for example? A. We do have Resene FilmPro Digital Green. September 2016
Q. We have old kitchen cupboards that we want to freshen up for the short term. We think it is very old enamel paint underneath. We want advice on what we need to do to stop the paint coming off. We don't want to sand back to the board. A. Sorry but unless you expose the old enamel paint surface and sand this there will be a continuing issue with the adhesion of new paint. September 2016
Q. Can you paint over laminated MDF like you get with modern kitchen cabinets? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow curing without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. September 2016
Q. I am looking to paint my fence. It was painted and not all of the paint washed off the fence. Would an acrylic paint be best suited? I was looking to paint it black. A. Assuming the fence is in reasonable condition, you could use Resene Lumbersider CoolColour™ Black for this. September 2016
Q. I want to paint my kitchen using some sort of acrylic paint. What is the toughest paint finish I could get with either rolling or spraying, not a two pack finish as I am a DIY. A. We recommend Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl. September 2016
Q. I have some of your waterborne paint that I was planning on painting some kids’ furniture, but am concerned about wear. Is there some type of clear topcoat that can be applied to protect the finish? A. The easiest would be to apply a coat of Resene Aquaclear. September 2016
Q. We bought a house two years ago that had been lived in by a couple for most of their lives and they smoked in the house. We repainted the lounge, dining, kitchen at the time we bought it, but nicotine still runs down the walls. What primer/sealer do you recommend using and does this stop chemicals being released from the walls altogether? We have a one year old son and I worry about his health in this house. In the bedrooms are we best to remove the existing wallpaper and seal the walls or is it safe to seal overtop of the wallpaper and then paint it? We have fibre plaster walls. A. I would remove the wallpaper in the bedrooms and then paint. Apply Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. For the other walls the only suggestion is to wash down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions, then apply a full coat of Resene StainLock and then finish with the two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. The Resene StainLock should lock in the nicotine staining September 2016
Q. I am about to sand my bare timber deck and steps. They have been bare for over 12 months. I am then going to use Resene TimberLock. After this do I need to use a primer before applying Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path to the deck and steps? A. Yes, ensure excess Resene TimberLock is wiped off at application and then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. September 2016
Q. We are looking to build in the near future and we will have ply exterior cladding. We would really like to paint or stain this black. Some people have advised us against this. Is it possible to achieve this and if so what would be the best way to do this? A. You can stain using Resene Waterborne Woodsman CoolColour™; this will give increased heat reflection but not render the surface cool to touch. Black absorbs almost all of the incoming infra-red radiation (heat) from the sun and this can place stress on the cladding system. Resene CoolColour technology reduces this but does not guarantee there will be no heat related issues. Selection of black as the finish colour will almost certainly see a more frequent re application of the stain on the north and westerly elevations. September 2016
Q. What paint would you recommend to paint fibro cement that will be situated behind a wood heater with a wet back on it? A. If you can maintain hand contact on the wall when the wood heater is at full heat then you can paint the area. Apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. These are all solventborne alkyd paints. These will be the best heat resistance wise but will yellow on ageing and heating. September 2016
Q. I'm using a new painter and he has used Resene Lumbersider paint on my interior walls and ceiling. This is a complete surprise to me because I assumed he would use normal interior paint. When I compare the other areas (previously painted with Resene SpaceCote), I can see his area has heavy brush and roller marks. The sheen seems to be a bit glossier and the colour looks slightly different (even though I've supplied him with the exact same colours). I appreciate Resene Lumbersider is designed for the outside elements (sun and rain). How else does this product differ from interior paint? Am I seeing brushstrokes because of poor technique rather than differences with the products? A. Before we launched Resene Zylone Sheen and Resene SpaceCote as dedicated interior wall paints Resene Lumbersider was used for both exterior and interior painting. The appearance of brush strokes in the dry paint is not related to interior use; this is a characteristic of the paint and is not an issue for exterior application as close viewing over a smooth surface is not common as it is for an interior paint job. Resene Lumbersider does have different gloss levels than our dedicated interior wall paints, especially side gloss. The way the eye perceives colour is influenced by gloss level. September 2016
Q. Can I use 13-year old white interior satin finish acrylic paint that has been stored in its original tin, supposedly well sealed? Does this paint deteriorate in the tin over time? If so how and by how much? A. The paint will need to be thoroughly shaken to achieve a homogenous mix. If the paint has an odour like sports socks that have been worn for months without washing then this is a sign of possible bacterial contamination. Iif this is the case then the paint cannot be used as bacterial contamination degrades the paint. September 2016
Q. I want to paint my stucco home with a dark colour Resene Shark. I have been told you have a special paint to minimise contraction and expansion, reducing possibility of cracking. A. I believe that Resene CoolColour™ technology is what you are referring to. A Resene CoolColour version of a colour reflects more heat than the non-cool version of the same colour. However application of the CoolColour does not render the surface cool to touch. TSR (total solar reflection) is the measure we use to quantify the CoolColour benefits; the TSR value of the CoolColour version of the colour is always greater than the non-cool version. All TSR measurements with CoolColour topcoats are measured over a white base coat. There is a CoolColour benefit with application of two CoolColour topcoats but the CoolColour benefit is maximised when a white basecoat is used and is critical for dark colours. The TSR of Resene Shark non-cool version is 7.4, this increases to 27.2 for the CoolColour version of the colour. Application of a CoolColour system does not guarantee that substrate related heat issues will not occur but reduces the risk of this occurring. September 2016
Q. I want to paint Sapelle Mahogany veneer interior doors. The house was built in 1985 and I'm sure the doors are original. In that era they would have sprayed with solvent based polyurethane I guess which is in very sound condition. What preparation is needed to paint them with Resene Enamacryl? Then apply two coats of Resene Enamacryl. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and will continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. September 2016
Q. My panel heater was dyed a red colour. Is there any possibility I could use your paint to cover it? A. Wash down the surface using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. September 2016
Q. We are thinking of painting wooden board and batten paneling in our living room to lighten the room. I assume I need to apply a sealer first before an undercoat and topcoat? What sealer would you recommend as well as the primer and type of topcoat finish? There may be a thin coat of clear varnish on the walls.
Q. I am planning to paint some internal windows and door frames that were painted 20 years ago in enamel paint. Can I paint over these with the new generation water based enamels? A. Yes, clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and sand the old enamel, then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and then finish with two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel, such as Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss or Resene Enamacryl gloss. September 2016
Q. Are your wallpapers suitable for commercial application? I.e. can you provide fire ratings certs? Notably the Anaglypta embossed range. A. To provide a test for every wallpaper is not a possibility. However the fire code does allow for a G2S rating whiteout testing on plasterboard as long as the paper thickness does not exceed 0.4mm. This may not be possible with heavily embossed papers. September 2016
Q. What is the recommended paint system for timber window joinery where the window is within a shower and will get direct contact with water? I have been suggested an oil-based enamel… but would appreciate your input. A. Yes, a full oil based system, Resene Wood Primer, Resene Enamel Undercoat and two coats of Resene Super Gloss or Resene Lusta-Glo. For the best result ensure all cut ends are primed to seal against water uptake. September 2016
Q. When repainting over Resene X-200, what is recommended for the paint system? A. The Resene X-200 needs to be sound and then washed down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. If there are no water ingress issues then you can repaint with a standard Resene exterior low build acrylic or Resene X-200 again. September 2016
Q. I have just purchased a home with Pinex ceilings painted in enamel and wish to repaint. Can you suggest the best product please? A. You sound very sure that the existing paint is enamel. Can you please check by taking a cloth and wetting it with meths and quickly transferring to the painted surface and rub. If there is no softening of the paint or colour transfer to the cloth then it is a traditional solvent borne enamel. It was not common to paint these tiles with anything other than a waterborne paint. September 2016
Q. On hard finish plaster walls do I need to apply a separate primer if the paint already has a primer mixed in? And if so how many coats of primer would I need to apply? A. The standard Resene paint system is a seal coat then two topcoats. The 'primer mixed' in concept is not a formulation practice that we consider appropriate to get the best paint finish. September 2016
Q. I'm painting the exterior of a fibro-cement tile 90s house. The old paint is thinning and loose. I'm painting with Resene Lumbersider Milk Chocolate. Do I need to undercoat? And should I brush or roll the topcoat for a smooth finish? A. Yes you will need to prime any bare areas with Resene Sureseal, and then apply two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat. For the best brush and roll finish I suggest Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss). This will give a good finish but also an extended time until the onset of chalking compared to a lower gloss finish such as Resene Lumbersider. If using a dark topcoat colour then use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour. CoolColours are not cool to touch but do reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool technology. This is important when painting over an older paint system and changing to a darker colour as the new darker colour will place stress on remaining old paint. If the existing paintwork isn’t sound then it needs to be stripped back fully first to avoid the old paint failing. September 2016
Q. Can I use waterborne enamel on internal doors? A. Yes but if the existing paint finish is a traditional solventborne enamel the following is recommended: clean down all areas using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner paying particular attention around door handles or areas of hand contact. Sand to provide a key for the new paint system, and then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with the two coats of waterborne enamel. September 2016
Q. I want to repaint some cedar French doors using enamel paint. What sealer/primer is best to use? A. We recommend Resene Wood Primer for bare cedar. September 2016
Q. What paint should I use in a hallway following one application of Resene Broadwall Prep & Seal? A. We recommend Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. September 2016
Q. I have a new plywood floor interior just installed that has had a waterbased whitewash applied. I am thinking I should apply a clear coat of waterbased varnish to protect the floor as it will get traffic. Do Resene have a product I can use over a white washed floor? A. We recommend Resene Aquaclear. September 2016
Q. I am designing for a primary school library and would like to know what type of paint is best for the walls. I usually use Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, but am unsure if there might be another product better for the school environment. A. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is still what I would recommend for this application. September 2016

Q. I have a small rimu coffee table which was polyurethane/varnished. I have sanded it back to bare timber using 80 and 180 grit sandpaper. What sealer and topcoat should I use? A. We now have either waterborne or solvent borne clear systems for interior timbers. In general solvent borne clear systems (Resene Qristal Clear) are harder but do yellow with age. Waterborne systems (Resene Aquaclear) are not as hard but are based on a clear crosslinking resin system but are not prone to yellowing as the films age. September 2016
Q. What can I overcoat vinyl wallpaper with? A. Coat the wallpaper with a coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer then apply two coats of Resene wall paint such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. September 2016
Q. I have varnished window sills in excellent condition. I now want them to be painted white. Do we sand the varnish completely off or can we use a product to seal the varnish then undercoat, paint etc? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. September 2016
Q. I understand there is no paint solution to resist dog claw scratches on wooden floors. We have 86 year old probably Matai flooring that needs sanding and resealing, but are reluctant to do it if it will just get ruined. Would a low sheen light colour be best option? A. There is no scratch resistant clear or pigmented flooring coating. However we have found that Resene Polythane is the best clear product for flooring where there is regular animal foot traffic. September 2016
Q. Why is there a colour difference between powder coating and Resene paint? A. Powder coat colours cannot accurately match Resene paint colours. We use our own proprietary pigments to produce Resene colours and these are not available or used by companies that supply powders for powder coating. September 2016
Q. We need a clear coat for a cedar feature wall installed in commercial premises. Do you have a product that is Group 3 fire rated? A. We recommend Resene Aquaclear. September 2016
Q. My interior ceilings are corrugated iron. Is there a safe interior paint for corrugated iron? A. Any Resene waterborne topcoat can be used over appropriately prepared and primed metals. September 2016
Q. I would like to update the pedestal base of a mahogany dining table that is presently stained with a satin sheen, by painting it gloss white. What prep is recommended prior to painting? I would like to use either Resene Lusta-Glo semi-gloss enamel or Resene Super Gloss enamel for hard wearing properties. Would you recommend one over the other? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then thoroughly sand and dust off. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of enamel topcoat. There is no technical reason to use gloss over the semi-gloss, it comes down to personal choice. September 2016
Q. I want to paint my brass kitchen cupboard handles a turquoise colour. Is this possible? A. Yes. Degrease the handles using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then prime the brass with Resene Vinyl Etch. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and two coats of Resene Lustacryl. If you can, leave the painted handles to cure for a few days before using but at least treat with care for the first week or so until the paint fully hardens. September 2016
Q. I have lined our garage with 18mm ply on the southern facing internal wall as this is where my work bench is. We have had issues with ground water and that has mostly been resolved, but I still get some surface mould on the ply over time. Currently the ply has not been treated or stained. I want to either use Resene Colorwood or Resene Aquaclear for the ply sheeting. Would these be the best options? Would MoulDefender be able to be added to either of these products? A. You can upgrade the mould resistance of the paint system but this cannot be assumed to be a 100% guarantee that mould growth will not return. Treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. September 2016
Q. Can I paint waterbased acrylic varnish on painted canvases? If I can, which one do recommend? A. We have not tested this application but Resene Aquaclear can be applied to standard waterborne pigmented paints. September 2016
Q. We want to repaint some sliding wardrobe doors in our daughter's bedroom. They were put in by the previous owner so I'm not sure what they're made of. I'm guessing MDF but could be wood as they seem very heavy. They look like they were professionally spray painted originally and I'm wondering whether it would work to paint them ourselves using a brush/roller, or do we need to get them spray painted again? A. Sand the doors to provide a key for the new paint system then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl (roll all coats to give the best finish). September 2016
Q. I have received two quotes for restaining the exterior cedar cladding of our house. One proposes scrubbing with Resene Timber and Deck Wash for prep, the other proposes spraying with Resene Moss & Mould Killer and leaving for a couple of days before hosing off. Can you please advise which of these is preferable? The cedar is 10 years old and in full sun so not mossy or mouldy, more sun bleached. A. If there is mould or algae present then both are required. September 2016
Q. I need to find a clear coat, durable finish product to protect some artwork I'm doing. I'm painting on the deck of a laminated, bamboo skateboard with acrylic paint and wanted to know if you had any products that would help protect the artwork from abrasion and also be water resistant? A. The only possible product to meet what you are after is Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield. Allow the waterborne acrylic to cure for at least 48 hours before applying the first coat of the clear. Two coats are required. September 2016
Q. I have an old caravan that I want to paint by hand. What type of paint would you recommend for the best finish? I am still hoping that with a bit of time and effort it will come up pretty good! The caravan is approx. 1970 and made of aluminium. The paintwork isn't in great condition. I have sanded it back to smooth and got rid of any flaky paint. A. The simplest system would be to prime bare aluminium with a coat of Resene Galvo One then apply two coats of a Resene waterborne topcoat such as Resene Sonyx 101. The alternative is a two pack system - spot prime with Resene Armourcote 221 then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 402. September 2016
Q. We are repainting the interior of our home and there are small patches which will need some filler and a touch of undercoat. Can we use the same undercoat on all areas i.e. bathroom, general walls, window frames etc or do you recommend different ones according to the type of topcoat? A. Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat is a waterborne general purpose undercoat that can be topcoated with both solvent and waterborne topcoats. September 2016
Q. What paint would you recommend to paint Shadowclad® on an exterior house wall? A. The standard Resene system is a prime coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat and then two coats of Resene Lumbersider. If using a dark coloured topcoat we recommend the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour. CoolColours are not cool to touch but reflect more heat than the same colour made using non cool technology. September 2016
Q. We have a varnished cot that needs touching up from teeth marks, scrapes and scratches. What can we use and how do we go about it? I don’t really want to have to sand the whole cot back. A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner to label directions then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure for 48 hours. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Leave to cure for at least two weeks in a well ventilated area then wipe down with warm water and a cloth before using. September 2016
Q. I have just had new plasterboard put up in the bathroom and now need to know what type of undercoat and topcoat paint to use. A. Prime any bare plasterboard with Resene Sureseal then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of a Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne topcoat. September 2016
Q. I want to paint an exterior white PVC panel black. What is the best product to use? A. All Resene exterior waterborne topcoats can be applied direct to clean white PVC. We recommend two coats of the Resene CoolColour™ technology version of the colour. Resene CoolColours are not cool to touch but do reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation. September 2016
Q. I'm trying to make a decision on the paint for around my windows and trims. What do you use? Is it acrylic enamel or oil based enamel? What finish - gloss, semi-gloss, satin? I will be using white that much I have worked out. I have always used oil based enamel with a small roller and get a beautiful finish. I did try acrylic enamel about three years ago and couldn't get the same finish as oil based. Is this normal or has it improved? When I ask at the shop they all say everyone is using acrylic these days so how do they get that smooth finish? A. The market has moved to waterborne enamels for exterior joinery, despite the fact that the ultra-smooth high gloss that comes with a traditional solventborne enamel is not achievable. The key distinguishing factor between a solvent and waterborne enamel is exterior durability. The time to surface breakdown (chalking) of waterborne enamels is significantly longer than a solventborne enamel. This means a longer recoat time. Semi-gloss solventborne enamels chalk much quicker than a gloss version and the time to chalking is so short that no paint supplier recommends use of a semi-gloss solvent borne enamel top coat for exterior joinery. However waterborne semi-gloss enamels such as Resene Lustacryl give very good durability for both interior and exterior use. Waterborne enamels set up and dry very quickly and this gives reduced time for flow and levelling and this is why brush marking is more common. Addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive does give an extended open time and does give a brush finish with reduced brush marking. September 2016
Q. I would like to repaint playground markings on asphalt. The old markings are still visible but are probably 10 years old. How should I prepare the surface and what sort of paint should I use? A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Then Resene Lumbersider is probably the easiest paint to use and is available in a wide range of colours. If slip resistance is required then add Resene SRG Grit at 500 g/L to the first coat of Resene Lumbersider then apply a second unmodified coat. September 2016
Q. We have a lot of external painted (white) timber work on our property and we want to clean it. Can you please recommend what product to use to clean the paintwork? We are close to the ocean so are not sure if that affects the type of product we use. A. Our cleaning product for paint work is Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. If there is mould present then use Resene Moss & Mould Killer for these areas and then wash down with the Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Dilute and apply product following label directions. September 2016
Q. Our garage floor is concrete, unsealed and constantly dusty. We would like to seal it to reduce dust in the area. Would Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 be appropriate? Would we have to paint over it or is it ok to use on its own? A. You can use Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 as a paint finish. You will have to clean to remove as much dust as possible before applying the product as it will not adhere to a surface with dust residues. September 2016
Q. I am looking into painting my old almond/brown coloured fridge to match my white kitchen. It works really well and I can't afford to replace it with a new one the same size so thought this could be an option. It has no rust and I would want to just paint the entire thing the one colour. Which paint would be best for this? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner to label directions then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. The paint will take at least 7 days to develop reasonable adhesion and hardness. September 2016
Q. I have stripped off old wallpaper in a lounge. The stripped surface is pretty rough, so I am thinking of either skim coating or else using Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal. What do you suggest is the best way? Also once I've done this, do I the use Resene Sureseal before applying topcoats? A. Skim coating would more than likely be the best way to achieve a uniform surface for painting. And yes seal off the new plaster with Resene Sureseal. September 2016
Q. I have a black particle board coffee table which I would like to repaint black as the colour is wearing off. It gets wet wiped several times a day and of course has coffee spills etc. What primer and paint type should I use? A. Sand and spot prime any bare substrate with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply a full coat of the primer and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. September 2016
Q. We have an old pine deck, very large, that needs cleaning of mould and waterblasting, not a problem. After that what should be used to seal the deck? We want to keep the natural colour. A. First treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer then wash and scrub using Resene Timber & Deck Wash. Avoid waterblasting as this can drive mould and moisture into the timber. Allow to dry. For a natural oiled finish we recommend two coats of Resene Furniture and Decking Oil. Alternatively to colour and protect you could apply two coats of Resene Woodsman Wood Oil. There are a range of colours available in Resene Woodsman that may still give you the natural look you desire. September 2016
Q. I sell painted fibre cement pots (composed of fibreglass and cement). Currently they can only be used indoors and not planted directly in to. I would like to be able to use the pots outdoors, and I was wondering if you have a product I could use to waterproof them? I realise it might not be possible to plant directly in them and have moisture constantly against the surface, but I would like for them to be able to withstand rain. The paint would need to be clear as I would like to keep the white matte cement finish. A. The product I would recommend is Resene Aquapel waterborne water repellent. It is a clear finish. It will not waterproof against driving rain or water under hydrostatic pressure but gives a water-beading effect to deter water penetration. September 2016
Q. I want to know whether Resene Concrete Stain is good to stain bricks in my house. If not do you have any suitable product to dye bricks? A. Resene Concrete Stain is a solvent borne stain designed specifically for concrete and other cementitious substrates and brick. This could be used on the bricks of your home if they are not glazed. Silicone treatments may affect penetration. A test patch is recommended. Intensity of colour will be determined by the number of coats applied, surface porosity and uniformity of application. September 2016
Q. For an indoor outdoor room's concrete seat would it be ok to use Resene Concrete Stain then Resene Concrete Wax… or would you be more inclined to use Resene Concrete Clear? A. It’s really down to preferred gloss level. Resene Concrete Wax is a bit higher sheen than Resene Concrete Clear satin.
October 2016
Q. I have to repaint the entire house. The current paint is in good condition. I am repainting because the paint is dirty, has non erasable pencil marks and is chipped. I don’t like the colour. The kitchen had really greasy walls. The cleaners used diluted caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) to clean the walls. They used this process: Wipe with a sponge dipped in diluted caustic soda solution, scrub, and wipe off dirty liquid from walls with cloth. Wipe with sponge dipped in water then wipe off water with cloth. Let dry. Can I repaint these walls now? Will any remaining trace of caustic soda solution create problem for paint now or a few years from now? A. All residues of sodium hydroxide need to be removed before painting. This can be tested using pH paper available from a swimming pool supplier. The reading should be close to 7. October 2016
Q. Can you apply polyurethane over a waterbased wood stain? A. Resene solvent borne varnishes can be applied over Resene Colorwood stains. October 2016
Q. I want to repaint window sills. How do I know if the paint is enamel or what sort of paint is already on there? I live in a Lockwood home and need to also redo the wooden ceiling in the bathroom which has mould on it. I think it has some sort of polyurethane on the wood but I don't want to damage the wood when cleaning. What would you use? What product would I recoat it in? A. Clean down an area (chalk free) and then wet a cloth with meths and quickly transfer to the painted surface and rub. If there is softening or removal of the paint then it is a conventional waterborne paint. Re the mould question: treat these areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. If the mould remains then the mould growth is underneath the clear layer. If this is the case then the only way to address the issue is to remove the varnish. October 2016
Q. I have a brand new cedar paint quality exterior front door. What product should I use to seal or undercoat it? Then can I use any exterior paint after that? e.g. Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss acrylic or should it is waterborne enamel? A. Use Resene Wood Primer as the primer coat then a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and two coats of Resene Lustacryl. October 2016
Q. I have trimmed the bottom off my pine exterior front door because it dragged on the sill. What type of paint should I prime or undercoat and topcoat the bare timber with? A. Use Resene Wood Primer, two coats if an exterior door. October 2016
Q. We are painting our interior plasterboard walls with your Resene Zylone Sheen product. Is it ok to use this paint on a paintable, wall-mounted, cement-board panel heater? A. We have not evaluated Resene Zylone Sheen for this application. Our recommendation is Resene Lumbersider or a Resene waterborne enamel, such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. October 2016
Q. I have stripped off old wallpaper in a lounge. The stripped surface is pretty rough, so I am thinking of either skim coating or else using Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal. What do you suggest is the best way? Also once I've done this; do I use Resene Sureseal before applying topcoats? A. Skim coating would more than likely be the best way to achieve a uniform surface for painting. And yes seal off the new plaster with Resene Sureseal. October 2016
Q. Which exterior paint in dark grey or charcoal can be used on a brick fence, wooden and tin fence and a deck? The deck has previously been painted so do not want to prep to stain. A. Prime new brick with Resene Concrete Primer, timber with Resene Quick Dry, and metal with Resene GP Metal Primer then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider. October 2016
Q. Is it possible to paint over bathroom vanities that look like they have been lacquered? We don't like the colour but we like the shape. A. Degrease and clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then thoroughly sand, dust off and apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. Paint should be kept dry for at least 48 hours to allow cure and development of water resistance. October 2016
Q. We moved into a 112 year old home. The trim is in rough shape. It is also very dark and we want to paint it. Should we be concerned over lead especially with sanding? It has not been painted just stained and shellac. A. Yes if you have a flake of paint we can test for lead at any Resene ColorShop. Note if there is flaking and the base colour is an orange brown then this is more than likely red lead primer. October 2016
Q. Is there a reliable paint system available which can be used to change the colour and restore aluminium powder coated exterior joinery? A. Clean down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions. Use Scotchbrite® on areas of corrosion and then apply a full coat of Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer and finish with two coats of any tinted Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoat. October 2016
Q. I have some red glazed large outdoor pots that I would like to paint black. What prep do I need to do and what paints should I use? A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, leave to dry for two days then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider. October 2016
Q. I have lined a room with plywood and now want to 'white wash' it to see the natural grain. Do I just water down the paint, and if so what proportions water/paint do I use? A. You can use Resene Colorwood Whitewash. October 2016
Q. When I plaster over painted surfaces I prep the surface by sanding with 80 grit sandpaper and then wash down with sugar soap then dry the surface. Sometimes the plaster won’t set on the painted surface or when it does set it bursts. Some tradesmen have suggested using PVA glue which is a British technique. What do you recommend? Do you have any products that will help with plaster adhesion? A. We recommend using Resene Sureseal as the sealer, and you must ensure there is no sugar soap residues remaining after cleaning. October 2016
Q. We have an 80s home with rough sawn timber cladding on large gables. It is painted in a very dark brown (solid colour not a stain) and I want to repaint it to achieve a golden-brown pine look. Is this possible? A. Yes, assuming the existing colour is a waterborne paint, but it will be with a solid colour. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of tinted Resene Lumbersider. October 2016
Q. If we paint our roof with your Resene Summit Roof Paint in a CoolColour™, how long would it be before we need to repaint it again? We are thinking of using the Resene All Black colour so want to know what sort of life expectancy it has once it’s on the roof. A. Difficult question to answer due to the colour, as adhesion should be no problem. The trigger for recoating will be surface chalking and this will vary with elevation, pitch and location. Typically roofs require on average repainting to restore aesthetics from 8 years on. October 2016
Q. I am a builder and am building a fence for a client that they also want me to paint. The timber used is H3.2 treated rough sawn pine. Fencing timber materials are low quality and because of this have lots of knots and sap/resin bleed in certain areas. This resin bleed was my main concern. What is the most effective way of locking it in so that it doesn't lift the paint over time? I was going to prime the fence with Resene Quick Dry and topcoat with Resene Sonyx 101 but think the sap bleed areas should be sealed with something else first. What would you recommend? I realise it will be hard to fully negate this problem long term but would like to minimise it for as long as possible. A. Prime knots with Resene Aluminium Wood Primer. Best to prime other areas with Resene Wood Primer. October 2016
Q. How do you remove dried water based paint from clothing? A. Try meths first. October 2016
Q. What’s a good paint that can be walked on for a timber deck? Apart from stains, oils etc. A. We recommend Resene Walk-on. October 2016
Q. If James Hardie Villa Board® has a 1-S Rating why does it need a Uracryl type finish when Resene SpaceCote is acceptable over other 1-S finishes? A. The main reason is durability and resistance to wear. October 2016
Q. How do you paint the cork on a cork topped bathroom stool? A. Sand using 220 grit sandpaper, dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Kitchen & Bathroom paint. October 2016
Q. What primer/undercoat is recommended for previously stained outdoor furniture? The stain is quite old and is kwila timber stain, not sure water based or oil based. I thought that Resene Wood Primer may be best as I intend to use Resene Lumbersider as the topcoat but would like your recommendations please. A. Scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and use to label directions. Then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider. October 2016
Q. I have several drawers to paint. They are varnished and in good nick. I have Resene Waterborne Smooth surface Sealer and was planning on letting that cure and then painting. Will this work ok? October 2016
Q. Can you please advise who paints the bottoms and sides of windows? Is it the exterior painter or the interior? A. It is unusual to have separate painters for interior and exterior unless it is a large commercial project October 2016
Q. I want to clear seal unpainted Hardiplank®. What should I use, and how long can I expect it to last before needing to recoat it? The cladding has been in place approx. 25 years and has never been painted. I was going to wash it down with bleach as it has slight mildew patches. I would like to seal it without painting to keep the slightly rustic look. A. The only possibility is to apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel. This is not technically a sealer but does give water repellence in all but driving rain. It will not dramatically change the look of the cladding October 2016
Q. Inspired by your Habitat issue 24 I would like to change the colour of the deck I have purchased to one of these darker (Resene Waterborne Woodsman) colours such as Resene Iroko or Resene Crowshead. It has been stained a Kwila colour some time ago and is patchy. What process and stains should I use to get a nice uniform charcoal stained coloured deck and surrounds? A. Treat the dark areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash again diluted and used to label directions. Stains are semi-transparent so the base colour will always have an impact on the final stain colour. You may be able to achieve a uniform base timber colour by sanding the decking. Then I would apply two coats of Resene Woodsman wood oil stain. October 2016
Q. I have bought a Lockwood house and want to change the wooden wall colour. The ceilings are white fortunately. I have been told there is some bleaching you can do. Is there a paint product that would successfully cover the brown? Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. October 2016
Q. I am planning to paint aluminium guttering that was powder coated before erection. I am unsure as to which undercoat I should use prior to the use of a gloss topcoat. A. If the powder coating is scrubbed down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions to achieve a chalk free surface then you can apply two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint. Prime any bare aluminium with Resene Galvo One. October 2016
Q. Can you please advise a product that can a coat hot dip galvanised steel post that is partially set into concrete to meet the durability requirements for a 50 year structure. WCC advise the galv steel/concrete interface is not acceptable and requires an additional anti corrosion coating. A. Our standard spec for this situation is to apply 300 microns dry film thickness of Resene Armourcote 510 high build epoxy to the prepared hot dip galvanised steel. October 2016
Q. What paint should I use to paint over Formica® cabinets? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate October 2016

Q. I had two bedrooms painted, one with Resene Woodstock and the other with Resene Aquarius and Resene Bowie (using Resene Zylone Sheen). I then had carpet laid and the paintwork has been scratched. The carpet company are going to pay for the repairs. However I am concerned that the paintwork has scratched so easily. One of the children knocked a desk chair into the wall which also damaged the paint. Is there a problem with the paint or the prep of the room? Can you shed any light on why this is happening? A. Damage to painted walls is a common occurrence with carpet backing as the backing is very sharp and abrasive. This sounds like it is a prep issue. The failing paint will need to be removed back to a sound base; the remaining sound paint will need to be sanded to provide a key for the new paint. Spot prime any bare substrate with Resene Sureseal then apply a full coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Room Velvet. October 2016
Q. I have applied a moss remover on a heavily infected concrete wall. Then washed with a high water pressure pump. The wall is looking clean. Now the walls are dry I am applying Resene Moss & Mould Killer. How long do I leave before applying my next coating? This will be Resene Concrete Primer or Resene Quick Dry acrylic primer undercoat. A. Leave for 48 hours then waterblast again. When the surface looks dry then apply the Resene Concrete Primer. October 2016
Q. The corrugated steel roof in question was put on the building in the early 1970s. There seems to have been no maintenance since then and the steel has extensive surface rust. Please recommend a primer that will effectively neutralise the corrosion and provide the best foundation for Resene acrylic finish coats. A. Corrosion cannot be neutralised; in this situation the corrosion maybe have progressed beyond the pint of effective repair. However the following may well extend the life of the roof: scrub down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions then waterblast. If the areas of red rust are well defined (no intervening galvanising remaining) then prime these with a coat of Resene Rust-Arrest. If there are areas of remaining zinc then prime with Resene GP Metal Primer. Then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. October 2016
Q. I am working on a residential project that has specific conditions of approval due to its location. I have been asked to provide evidence that the exterior of the building will be finished in a product that has an LRV less than 25%. I see that most of your products list the respective LRV. However we will be using the Resene Woodsman stains on cedar and these are listed without a LRV. How do I get the LRV for these? If the specific LRV's are unknown can you confirm in some regard that the above stains have a LRV less than 25? A. LRV values can only be determined for a solid colour, stains are semi-transparent and therefore an LRV value cannot be measured. We can estimate the stain LRV by selecting the nearest solid colour and using the LRV of the solid colour to satisfy the LRV requirement. October 2016

Q. We are looking to repaint an 8 year old house. The finish is 19mm rusticated cedar. It is currently painted in Resene Waterborne Woodsman in Resene Nutmeg. Surface condition varies depending on sun exposure but I'm confident that I can strip it back to bare timber (I have experimented). I am looking to change from a stained to a painted finish, probably Resene Nero or Resene Bokara Grey. What sealing and/or priming products will I need for this please? A. Scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions. Apply a full coat of Resene Wood Primer then finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider. October 2016

Q. Is it better to use an oil or water based product to stain a deck? A. My suggestion is to use a solventborne stain such as Resene Woodsman wood oil. October 2016
