Always make sure you read the product label and data sheet prior to application. If in doubt about any aspect of your project, please ask our Paint Expert for help or come in and see our staff at your local Resene ColorShop or Reseller.
Q. Can a Resene solventborne paint be used on a boat? A. Resene solventborne paints have been used for this quite a lot. There isn’t really much difference between a solventborne marine enamel and a solventborne house enamel. As long as you use a gloss and it’s above the waterline then it’s fine to use a Resene solventborne enamel. November 2016
Q. When spraying Resene Super Gloss enamel with a pressure pot system, not airless, what is the mixing ratio with No.9 thinner and can I use Mineral turps instead? A. No set volume just sufficient to achieve good atomisation and spray pattern. It will vary with spray set up - I suggest you start with 5% by volume. November 2016

Q. We have a new pine deck that we stained with waterborne decking stain Resene Warm Kwila around five months ago and we want to overpaint it with paving paint because the colour is too dark - it gets VERY hot - and we are unhappy with the finish (our fault not the product’s). Would Resene paving paint be OK and would it be better to use a more highly reflective colour e.g. Resene Half Truffle (64% reflectivity or Resene Truffle 54% reflectivity). Both are available in CoolColour. A. The stain is designed to erode off the surface upon weathering; given this, painting over the top of the stain can have its own set of issues. Six months exposure is not normally sufficient weathering time for the majority of the applied stain to erode. If you can, I would allow the deck to weather over summer then look to paint over it. At the end of this time thoroughly scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label instructions then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on in the CoolColour version of the colour selected. CoolColour™s do not make the surface cool to touch but do reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool technology. November 2016
Q. What are the options of paint for window frames, skirting and doors. And also is there a special ceiling paint too? Is there a list of most popular shades of white for bedroom walls? A. The most popular paint options we have for bedrooms are - Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for walls, Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss for trim and joinery and Resene SpaceCote Flat or Resene Ceiling Paint for the ceiling. The Resene SpaceCote options are more washable and durable than Zylone Sheen/Ceiling Paint. When it comes to colour, our most popular whites and neutrals are on our Resene whites and neutrals colour chart. Depending on the depth of colour you would like, the following colours are very popular - Resene Alabaster, Resene Black White, Resene Sea Fog, Resene Thorndon Cream, Resene Truffle, Resene Quarter Tea, Resene Quarter Spanish White. These colours also come in darker and lighter variants. November 2016
Q. What type of paint is best suited for painting pallets of wood? A. Resene Lumbersider would be the best paint for this application. November 2016
Q. I used your semi-gloss exterior paint on my motor home and used etching primer then sprayed two topcoats 24 hours after applying a last coat. I used cold water to assist with the removal of the masking tape and the water left streak marks on the paint. I don’t know what to do about it. A. Did you use Resene Sonyx 101 as the topcoat? If you did then the explanation of the streaking is that the waterborne paint did not achieve water resistance before washing down. The only solution would be to apply another thin coat of the topcoat. November 2016
Q. I'd like to repaint a cheap table with a solid colour in the pastel range. I am looking for a semi-gloss and hard wearing finish. I have a hand held sprayer for the final coat. I would prefer to work with water based paint, but am happy to use oils based if I have to. I don't know what the factory paint is, so I suspect I may need to use a primer. A. Based on what you have advised, sand the existing paint, dust off and then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with Resene Lustacryl. November 2016
Q. The home we have bought has had the doors, skirting and architraves painted in enamel and then subsequent owners have painted in acrylic without any preparation. The paint is now peeling in some places. We have sanded some spots but others seem fine. Do we need to sand every single surface before treating with some primer undercoat or can we paint straight over what's there? We purchased Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat to paint them all with before topcoating with an acrylic gloss. A. To ensure good adhesion of a new paint then sorry but yes but you will need to sand. This will include the old enamel base coat. November 2016
Q. Can Resene Moss & Mould Killer be left on for more than 48 hours? A. Yes the reaction is usually quite quick; you must thoroughly wash down any rusted surfaces prior to painting with fresh water. November 2016
Q. We have previously done an outside deck with your product Resene Woodsman wood oil stain. It is now well weathered on the outside location not so much under shelter and I am wondering what product I should use to redo the deck. Can I use an unstained oil product on the weathered surfaces or do I need to use a product with stain in it? I don’t want the deck to be too dark or bright in colour, preferring a more natural look. A. I would recommend using the same stain again. Once a deck has been stained it is difficult to alter the colour especially if the existing stain colour is dark. The lightest Resene Woodsman colour we have is Resene Natural. November 2016
Q. I want to paint ceramic tiles around the basin. I have Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss. Can I paint this directly or do I need special preparation? A. Are the tiles glazed in? If so you will need to apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure without wetting for 24-48 hours then apply the two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The system will take 5-7 days to develop a good adhesion so care is needed until this time has passed. November 2016
Q. I am looking for a suitable product to paint the wooden joists underneath a balcony in a light grey colour. Joists are H3.2 treated and new. We have to put the decking on yet but want to paint first. A. Apply a full prime coat of Resene Wood Primer, a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider. November 2016
Q. I want to create an effect on raw roughcast concrete with a faint base colour, glazed and then covered with the Resene sparkly effect paint. My testpot colour (Resene Marionette) on the raw concrete has come out very much darker than on my brush out piece of white paper. Does this mean I need a fairly solid base white to bring out a true colour? A. Yes if you have only applied one thin coat then the base colour will affect the colour you see. November 2016
Q. Can I put waterbased Resene Walk-on over old (8 years) oil based paint on my back porch? It has a concrete surface. A. You will need to thoroughly sand the existing paint, dust off and then apply the Resene Walk-on. We can’t guarantee that the old paint will remain attached however. November 2016
Q. The white wash was going to be half paint and half water. It's a Resene Half Blanc for walls. But I just wanted something to protect it like a clear coat. A. If the white wash is a waterborne paint then a coat of Resene Concrete Clear could be used. An adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is required before topcoating with a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat. November 2016
Q. What paint is best to use under Resene Write-On Wall Paint? The walls are currently painted white. A. I would recommend Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen as the tinted base coat. November 2016
Q. Can Resene Blacktop be used on a concrete path? A. Yes, concrete should be porous and if unpainted apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal first. November 2016
Q. I have an old state house with timber tongue and groove floors. In the kitchen/bathroom can I rip up the old lino, prepare and paint the floorboards white... And have a successful hard wearing finish? What do you recommend? A. There is no reason why you could not remove the floor coverings back to bare timber then paint. The timber may well be matai and after sanding to a smooth finish you will need to prime using Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply two coats of Resene Waterborne Uracryl 802. November 2016
Q. I need advice on what paint to use on an old wrought iron terrace balustrade that is in good condition (no rust). I have primed it with your Resene GP Metal Primer but am not sure what to use for the topcoat. A. Traditionally wrought iron has been topcoated with solventborne enamel systems (a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and two coats of Resene Super Gloss enamel. However waterborne enamel systems (a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and two coats of Resene Enamacryl) can also be used. November 2016
Q. I have a kitchen ceiling which has wood cladding and is varnished. I now want to paint it white. A. Ensure the varnish is thoroughly degreased using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Leave to dry for 24 hours then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom. November 2016
Q. We have bronze aluminium doors and windows from the 70s that we would like to recoat. Is it possible to use one of your epoxy primers and then Resene Armourcote spraying enamel? A. You can use Resene Armourcote 220 as the primer but this can only be overcoated with a two pack tinted topcoat such as Resene Uracryl 400 series or Resene Imperite I.F. 503. November 2016
Q. I am looking for paint for shingles. Can you please advise the best Resene paint system for new cedar shingles? They will be Resene Rakaia. A. Prime with a coat of Resene Wood Primer, and then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider CoolColour™ tinted to the colour. November 2016
Q. Is Resene Lumbersider only available in the one sheen - low sheen? A. Yes, Resene Lumbersider is only made at the one gloss level, however if you want a higher gloss level then use Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) instead of Resene Lumbersider, or Resene Hi-Glo for high gloss. November 2016
Q. We need to paint over some prefinished aluminium extrusion which is being used as a spacer. The finish is gloss white. All areas are internal and we would prefer to use a low sheen/satin finish to match the walls which are Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Is there an easy way to do this without multiple primers? A. The bare aluminium will need to be primed before topcoating. November 2016
Q. We have a flat butynol membrane roof with heat build-up in the cavity. We have been advised by a roof specialist to try ‘white coatings’ before attempting to install vents. Apparently this is a white paint with reflective additives. The roof already has one coat of white paint (but roof is dirty so not doing much). What product would you recommend and where can I get it? A. There are white paints that claim to be more heat reflective white paints but these are not available here to the best of our knowledge. Standard white paint does have reflective properties and for your situation we would suggest a prime coat of Resene Membrane Roofing Primer and then three coats of Resene Sonyx 101 White (the more coats the better). November 2016
Q. I would like to paint the interior and cabinets in my camper. The interior and camper wall are Formica®. I would like to paint the walls white and the top cupboards white and the bottom cupboards a mint green, what can I use to achieve this? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate. November 2016
Q. I spilt some charcoal oil stain on concrete outside - do you sell a product which would remove this. It is more the dark stain than the oil? A. The only suggestion would be to try Resene Graffiti Cleaner. November 2016
Q. I have a solid Jarrah outdoor table. I have removed all the old varnish and sanded it back. I was wondering, what is the best way to treat it or stain it? A. Try Resene Timber and Furniture Gel Jarrah. November 2016
Q. We are looking at using grooved Shadowclad® on our new house but were interested in a paint finish rather than stain. Is this product often painted and how does the maintenance/repainting work with having a rough surface? A. Rough sawn Shadowclad® can be painted or stained. Painting will require application of a primer coat such as Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then two coats of pigmented topcoat. Given the surface is not smooth, standard application rates will be well down on rates for application to a smooth timber surface. November 2016
Q. Can I paint over powder coated window frames? What products do I use? A. The best system we spec is Resene Armourcote 220 and Resene Uracryl. You need to clean down to remove chalk and contaminants first. November 2016
Q. I need to paint a mural on a metal which is magnetic laminated with a matte black finish; I'm just wondering what paint you would suggest to use for this surface. The wall needs to last for 10 years. It is for an indoor exhibition. A. I am not familiar with the substrate but I suggest that you apply a test patch of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and check adhesion after 48 hours. If successful then you can apply any Resene waterborne paint to the surface. November 2016
Q. I have granite splashbacks in my kitchen. Can I paint them? A. Yes but painting does require use of two pack paints and the painted surface will not have the features of the original granite stone. November 2016
Q. I've just bought a house with a horrendous pink laminate kitchen. How can I paint over this? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.
Q. What is your best hard wearing wooden floor paint? I am applying on top of a varnished chip board bach floor. A. We recommend a traditional solventborne paint such as Resene Lusta-Glo. Thoroughly sand the varnish and then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and the two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. November 2016
Q. I'm repainting a bathroom. Which product is best to use on the walls and ceilings? If the paint is in reasonable condition, is there any prep beyond cleaning and light sand? A. Your prep sounds fine, apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. December 2016
Q. How can I work out how much paint I need for a long, wide hallway that has 10 doors in it, and two of those doors are doubles? A. Assuming you are only looking to paint the walls and not the doors… Take the hall length and height and multiply to get the area of a wall, measure the same for a door and do the same maths. The difference between the total wall area value and the total door area (10 x one door) will give you the wall area to be coated, and then double this for the 2 walls. Our coverage values are given in square metres per litre (no loss factor) and you will need two coats of only applying topcoat. December 2016
Q. Our pergola has a floor made of exposed aggregate. We want to paint the aggregate. A. Paint adhesion to stone/aggregate can be difficult to achieve. For a clear finish use Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear will achieve very good adhesion to the surface you want to coat. For a paint (colour) finish apply a coat of Resene Concrete Clear gloss then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl White. This is the best system we can offer for this situation. Paint adhesion will take 5-7 days to kick in. December 2016
Q. We have a Hardiplank® house and are looking at going with a dark colour (Resene CoolColour Bastille). I know weatherboard should not be painted dark colours due to potential damage but is Resene Bastille ok for Hardiplank® or would be advised to go for a lighter colour (Resene Half Nocturnal being second choice)? A. If you were staring from bare then it is possible but application of a very dark colour to the existing paintwork may cause the existing paintwork to blister or peel. Application of the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour will reflect more heat than the non-cool version of the colour but we can give no guarantees that failure associated with the existing paint system would not occur. December 2016
Q. What is the difference between the Wood-X stain and the Resene Woodsman oil? I want to paint cedar in Queenstown and like the Heartwood (Woodsman) stain but have heard maybe it's not as good quality as Wood-X range? A. The key differences are the binder (resin system) and the mode of failure. Wood-X is based on a non-drying mineral oil that penetrates into the substrate. Woodsman is also based on a vegetable oil and does not achieve the same depth of timber impregnation that Wood-X does. Resene Woodsman is designed to fail by erosion of the stain off the coated substrate and is easy to restain or you can change to another product type in the future. Wood-X does not erode off the surface and once coated with Wood-X you will need to use the same product for future maintenance. December 2016
Q. The pine decking on my daughter's veranda was never stained and is now looking pretty shabby and stained. What product do you recommend to make it look cleaner and newer and would it need waterblasting or similar before applying a product to it? A. If there is black mould or green algae present then treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash also diluted and used to label instructions. We don’t recommend waterblasting. December 2016
Q. Can I paint treated H3.2 timber rather than stain it? I want to use Resene New Denim Blue on it. A. Yes apply a prime coat of Resene Wood Primer then apply the two coats of pigmented waterborne topcoat. December 2016
Q. I am building a tiny house and would like some advice on painting. Some walls and the ceiling are plywood and other walls are a wood veneer, and the cabinetry is MDF. Could you please suggest the best way to prepare and prime each of these surfaces? How many coats would we need? Would we need a different kind of paint for the walls versus the cupboard doors - we don't want fingermarks showing on the cupboards as we don't have handles, they push to open. A. You can prime all these interior substrates with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl for cupboards and cabinetry, two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for walls or two coats of Resene SpaceCote Flat for ceilings. December 2016
Q. I wonder if you could give me some tips about exterior stains. We have light coloured bare timber weatherboards that we would like to retain their colour - i.e. we don't want to change the colour with a stain. Is there a Resene product that acts like a clear stain? A. Sorry no clear water white exterior coating, this type of clear gives no protection to the timber and the bond between the clear and timber would break resulting in flaking of the clear layer. We recommend you choose a stain colour close to your timber colour. December 2016
Q. I am building a new house with Shadowclad® groove exterior. I love the look of black paint on the exterior but have just realised that CHH recommend a LRV of 50% or above. The opposite of what I had designed in my head. They recommend: "Three coats (1 undercoat, 2 top coats) of a good quality, 100% acrylic paint system with a light reflectance value (LRV) of 50% or greater (i.e. light colours) which is regularly maintained will provide the highest level of protection and durability for Shadowclad and is likely to require the least amount of coating maintenance over the life of the cladding. Dark colours (LRV of below 50%) may still be used, however they are likely to increase heat and stress on the panel surface, reducing the panels overall lifespan and increasing the level of coating maintenance required to maintain an acceptable visual appearance. Some film forming stains (i.e. coatings with the consistency of paint but with an appearance similar to penetrating stains) may offer similar protection qualities to paints however advice and assurance should be sought from the coating manufacturer as to their suitability for use with Shadow clad prior to application." I was wondering about your CoolColour system. A.The LRV value of a colour does not change when the colour is made using Resene CoolColour™ Technology as LRV is a light reflectance value, what does change is the TSR (Total Solar Reflectance ) of the CoolColour version of a colour is higher than the same colour made on non-cool pigments. CoolColours are not cool to touch but given the higher heat reflectance there is a reduced stress on the substrate and also an increase in paint durability. December 2016
Q. The house I am hoping to buy is early 70s, vertical redwood on exterior with a brown stain which I find most unattractive. I do love a mid-century look though, and wondered if the wood can be re-stained in black maybe... A. Semi-transparent stains will always allow the basecoat to show through and this will affect the colour of the topcoat stain. You can re-stain but you would need to test colours to see how the base colour affects the new colour. December 2016
Q. I have a Cedar panelled double garage door. I do not know the colour, paint type or supplier. The condition is very good. The reason for repainting is due to the repair work on the cedar ply panels to prevent warping. I want to use the Resene Waterborne Woodman Cherrywood paint, but cannot make out whether the door has been oil stained and/or coated with polyurethane. Can I just paint over it? A. Clean the door down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label directions, then sand the door to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system. Suggest that you go with a solid paint colour for the door (apply a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry then two coats of Resene Enamacryl). December 2016
Q. I have two questions regarding Resene Quick Dry primer: Can I apply it straight to metal corners (galvanised steel) on a weatherboard construction home? And how long can wood painted with Resene Quick Dry stay without topcoats? A. Resene Quick Dry is not suitable as a metal primer. The length of time it can be left depends upon exposure conditions, if exterior and subject to full weather exposure then I would say no more than four weeks. December 2016
Q. I have a rimu ceiling with a polyurethane coating on it. Is it possible to blonde or whitewash the rimu? Also I will need to find a wood that matches as I am building an extension and that would need to be blonded. A.If you sand the clear polyurethane to provide a mechanical key then apply Resene Colorwood Whitewash this will give a blonded finish. Not sure about locating a matching timber but it may well be difficult to get the same effect as the Resene Colorwood Whitewash is being applied over an aged polyurethane which will have discoloured over time. December 2016
Q. I have old yellowed plastered plasterboard in a room that has never been painted. Do I have to paint it with oil based pigmented sealer or is there a water based sealer that will do the job? I am trying to avoid using oil based. A. This is one situation where Resene Sureseal is the only option we recommend. December 2016
Q. I found some Resene Half Spun Pearl enamel undercoat in our garage from 12 years ago. Is it safe to use on an outside playhouse for my toddler? It's very strong smelling and hard to remove from paint brushes. A. The product is only an undercoat and if used in an exterior situation will need topcoating with a Resene waterborne exterior topcoat paint, for exterior use you will also have to prime the substrate with the required substrate primer. The product is a solventborne undercoat and the thinner and clean up solvent will be mineral turps. Most decorators, if buying new paint, would just use waterborne paint. December 2016
Q. Greetings, today we were sold Resene Moss & Mould Killer for our deck, however it seems it may break down the cellular fibre of the timber and I should use a sodium per carbonate material. A. We are very familiar with sodium per carbonate having researched it in the past. It is not as innocuous as it seems! It is a strong oxidizing agent and an irritant which is not stable in the presence of many organic materials. It is best looked upon as a mixture of sodium carbonate (washing soda) and hydrogen peroxide - which, like sodium hypochlorite, is a bleach. It also has a similarly high pH (10.5 for a 1% solution) climbing to 11.5 (and higher) as the hydrogen peroxide depletes leaving an enriched level of sodium carbonate on the surface. Resene Moss & Mould Killer will certainly bleach the timber (as natural daylight does) along with its ability to kill moss and mould. It does not damage the wood fibre. At the dilution used it will dissolve any surface wood sugars (which are deleterious anyway) and possibly some lignin which has escaped being degraded by U.V. This is a positive feature as all of our research has shown that a slight opening of the surface (especially with new timber) enhances the take up of the decking oil/stain and gives significantly improved durability. December 2016
Q. I spilt white paint all down my concrete steps and have the landlord coming tomorrow! How can I remove the paint and fast? A. We recommend Resene Graffiti Cleaner. December 2016
Q. We are planning to use a Hardies cladding product called Easy Lap for our new house. It recommends a textured paint but we want as smooth a finish as possible. What exterior paint do you have that could satisfy both these needs? Could this paint be applied so it doesn't look textured? We do not want it swirly/chequered/sponged in appearance? A. You could use Resene Sandtex. The requirement for a textured finish on the Hardies product will be probably be to disguise fixings and other surface imperfections from installation. Resene Sandtex is not a smooth paint but does have a texture resembling a sand finish. December 2016
Q. Could you advise me of a gloss or semi-gloss paint safe for children’s toys? A. Resene Enamacryl and Lustacryl are Environmental Choice Approved and contain no formaldehyde or heavy metal pigments. I suggest that the painted items are left to cure for at least two weeks then wiped down with warm water and a cloth before putting into service. If the toys are wood than apply a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. December 2016
Q. I want to paint my brand new bathroom which is lined with plasterboard. I have Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer. Should I have bought pigmented Resene Sureseal instead? My plumber told me I needed a sandable sealant before applying paint. A. Yes, the correct sealer of new Aqualine plasterboard is Resene Sureseal. I’m not sure why your plumber recommended a sanding sealer as the level of plasterboard finish should be such that sanding is not a requirement. December 2016
Q. I have a timber fence to repaint. It is a low sheen finish (off white). What is the best Resene paint type for this? A. If the existing paint system is sound then we recommend Resene Lumbersider. December 2016
Q. A fly spray canister was mounted 180 degrees from its recommended position. Over time, it discharged the entire canister contents into the wall, previously painted in water based paint. It affected the paint where it ran; leaving a sticky residue that interacted with the paint. Before filling and repainting, Sugar soap, meth and acetone were used in an attempt to remove the stickiness. None prevailed. What is available to reduce this stickiness prior to painting? A. Wipe the affected area down with Resene Emulsifiable Solvent Cleaner, then using many water changes wipe the area down until the wash water is no longer milky. Then apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and follow with a cap of Resene StainLock before covering with waterborne wall paint such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. December 2016
Q. Can Resene Kwila Timber Stain be used over a previously acrylic coated Kwila deck? A. Sorry, but overcoating with paint such as Resene Lumbersider would be our only recommendation provided the existing waterborne paint is sound. December 2016
Q. I just wondered if Resene Colorwood Whitewash would be suitable for a Lockwood house. A. Yes for internal areas other than wet areas such as bathrooms. Degrease the area to be painted with Resene Interior Paint Cleaner then sand using 180 grit sand paper to de gloss the existing clear varnish. Dust off and wipe with a wet cloth then when dry apply the Resene Colorwood Whitewash. It is essential to get an even wet layer of the Resene Colorwood Whitewash. I recommend using a speed brush to apply the product and work in a continued direction along the full length of a board. Try to avoid a build-up of the product on overlap areas as the whiteness is directly related to wet film thickness. December 2016
Q. I am working on the design of a building to be constructed that will have tinned copper straps running up the exterior walls. The tinned copper does not look very nice so I think that painting over it should be a simple solution. The paint we are specifying for the exterior is Resene X-300E. Are you able to give some advice on how the tinned copper strap would be prepared for painting? Tinned Copper is a pretty standard thing used in substations, they run conductors in the ground throughout the site in a grid pattern and then they connect anything metallic to this earth grid. The building we are constructing has the conductors attached to the outside of the building to connect to the metallic roof/stairs etc. For normal electrical equipment we don't bother painting it but this is attached to a building. As for dissimilar metal corrosion, it has never been a problem. Tin and copper are only a few spots away from each other on the electro chemical series. A. A full coat of Resene Galvo One and two coats of a Resene exterior paint should achieve what you are wanting. December 2016
Q. We have plastered walls with painted stone externally. As the house is pre 1900 it does not have a dampproof course. To prevent wicking of ground moisture we need to paint internally with a breathable paint so that the walls remain porous. Can you advise us what to use. We are reluctant to use Resene Sureseal to prevent wicking? It is Oamaru stone. A. We have had a long standing position re application of a film forming paint system to this substrate. The stone is weak cohesively and while we can reinforce the surface the reinforcement does not extend deep into the stone surface and there is a great potential for cohesive failure of the stone to occur within solid paint systems. Our only recommendation is to apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel which is a water repellant treatment. December 2016
Q. For a kid’s bedroom makeover, I am planning to use Resene Quick Dry and Resene Lumbersider. What do you recommend as a clear coat on top? A. As long as the Resene Lumbersider is allowed to fully cure then I suggest using Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield as this gives a low VOC system. December 2016

Q. I am redecorating my bedroom and I have had mould on the wallpaper which I am stripping off. Can you recommend something to kill the mould before I paint? A.Treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Take care not to splash onto carpets or furnishings as the diluted material is strong bleach. December 2016
Q. I want to paint my old caravan. It is aluminium with some of the original paint peeling off. I don’t know what the old paint is. What do you suggest? A. If the aluminium is bare and clean then our best system would be a primer coat of Resene Armourcote 221 and two coats of Resene Uracryl 403. To achieve this you would have to strip the existing paint as we cannot be sure if this paint system is compatible with the existing. December 2016
Q. Are acrylic enamels as good as oil based enamels? A. Depends upon your definition of good. The exterior durability of waterborne enamels extends to reduced gloss levels, whereas for an oil based enamel a full gloss is the only gloss level that can be used for exterior exposure and even then the paint would undergo rapid surface chalking relatively quickly. Waterborne enamels can be used for opening joinery as can solventborne enamels. Brush marking is a comment associated with brush application of waterborne enamels but this can be markedly reduced. Waterborne enamels will not yellow or suffer embrittlement over time as solventborne enamels do. The only feature which a solventborne enamel surpasses waterborne enamel of the same gloss level is hardness, over time this feature is not an advantage as the solventborne enamel continues to cross link and harden. December 2016
Q. How would I work out the spreading rate for a range of colours? A. The spread rates are determined by the spreading rate of the paint not the colour. This s listed on the back of most of our labels, which you can also view online. December 2016
Q. I am about to repaint a filled, reinforced concrete block retaining wall (Rockcote plastered surface) which has three rust areas showing on the surface - each area of rust is roughly 60mm x 60mm. The existing Resene X-200 topcoat is still in very good condition. How should I treat these before repainting with Resene X-200? A. Overcoat the rust stains with Resene GP Metal Primer then re-apply the topcoat system. However we cannot guarantee that rust staining won’t reappear at a future date. December 2016
Q. I used Resene X-200 for our concrete block house exterior. Very happy. Now I wish to paint our interior bathroom wood joinery window, which is about 1m square in an open shower. The council are not happy with the window in the open shower. The builder says that the shower is far enough away and will only get the occasional splash from an errant hand held shower head. It is out of the splash area of the rain shower head. The window is 68 year old painted redwood. What is the most waterproof system you can recommend? Please also advise if we should strip back to wood and start again. A. If possible envelope prime (ensure end grains are sealed) the timber with a coat of Resene Wood Primer, apply an envelope coat of a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish the exposed faces with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. December 2016
Q. I cleaned my concrete tile roof and treated it for mould. I painted one coat of paint with airless sprayer. The paint is bubbling and coming off. Why did this happen and what do I do now to fix it? A. While a waterborne paint can be applied direct to concrete the condition of the concrete surface is critical to achieving adhesion. For aged roof concrete tiles we recommend cleaning to remove any biological growth such as mould/moss/algae and removal of any debris that has accumulated in joints or overlap areas. Then apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal before applying two coats of Resene Summit Roof. Can you cut a bubble and see if there is contamination (dirt/algae) of the back of the paint and what the condition of the surface is where the paint bubble was cut from? This will give an indication of possible failure mode. December 2016
Q. Does Resene Lumbersider paint need undercoat? I am painting an old villa with wood walls. The old paint was flaking and has now been scraped and sanded back - in places to bare wood. A. While Resene Lumbersider can be used direct on some surfaces, for best durability we do recommend priming bare timber (with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat) when repainting using Resene Lumbersider. December 2016
Q. What can you recommend for painting galvanised steel gates? I’m looking to spray them black, probably semi-gloss. A. Apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 220 to achieve a dry film thickness of 75 microns then Resene Uracryl 402 to achieve a dry film thickness of 100 microns. December 2016
Q. I would like to know your paint range that is safe for children's wooden toys? A. We recommend Resene Lumbersider for wooden children's toys; the product is Environmental Choice Approved and contains no heavy metal pigmentation. December 2016
Q. Can I apply Resene Lumbersider to a new retaining wall? H4 Timber has been green gauged. Also, would using Resene Quick Dry primer improve durability? A. Priming will always extend durability in respect to timber protection but has no influence on time to the onset of topcoat chalking. There can be some timber treatment leaching through a total waterborne system for priming. I would recommend Resene Wood Primer which is solventborne. December 2016
Q. What would cause the paint to crack on the join of my interior windowsills? Several interior windowsills and frames I painted a couple of months ago have cracked where the windowsills join the outer frames. A. There has more than likely been dimensional changes within the timber due to variations in moisture content. Paint has a degree of extensibility but only to a small extent. The paint film would break if extended beyond this. December 2016
Q. We are having the outside of our beach house painted and on the weatherboard we are using Resene Black White. My question is should we use low-sheen or half-gloss? Which would weather best and look fresher? A. The higher the gloss levels the longer the time to the onset of chalking. Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss finish) gives a good balance between low gloss and high gloss Resene exterior waterborne paints. December 2016
Q. We need to recoat cedar weatherboards that are badly weathered. I don't know what the original paint was, circa 1970. The original looks like a pigmented paint. A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Treat any areas of mould/algae growth with Resene Moss & Mould Killer prior to the wash down step. Then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) or Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss). December 2016
Q. We recently coated our ply wall with Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain. When the scaffolders took some of their scaffolding away they spilled a whole lot of rusty water on the ply. It wasn't discovered until a few days later. We then tried to wash it off with water but that wasn't successful. Is there anything that you can recommend that we can try to get the rust marks off? A. There is no easy way to remove the rust staining as the stain was so fresh. The traditional way to remove rust stains was to treat the affected areas with a diluted solution (suggest 1%) of oxalic acid. December 2016
Q. Can you advise me on the systems for painting acrylic over an acrylic stain and an oil stain please? A. There are essentially three stain types, film and non-film forming and stains based on a mineral oil binder. The latter can only be recoated with the same stain type. Recoating of a non-film forming stain requires the stained areas to be thoroughly scrubbed down with a product like Resene Timber and Deck Wash then primed with a solventborne wood primer such as Resene Wood Primer and then two coats of an exterior low sheen waterborne paint such as Resene Lumbersider or Resene Walk-on. If the stain is film forming then it must be prepared to a soundly adherent status, and then spot prime any bare timber with Resene Wood Primer, followed by a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then topcoated as above. December 2016
Q. How do I identify what stains are film and non-film forming? Also the oil mineral binding type of stain is that just an oil based stain? A. If the stain was film forming there is usually signs of flaking or detachment, apart from that it is very difficult to ID the stain type. There is no easy way to identify mineral oil stains. Often the best way to identify it is to see what cans of paint and stain have been left in a garage by the previous owner or painter. December 2016
Q. What's the system when it comes to rust on shipping containers? I need to repaint a container that has rusting on the exterior in patches. It's been done once before but not correctly. A. After washing down the corroded areas with Resene Roof and Metal Wash, remove all loose corrosion products (rust) by power tool cleaning to a sound base with only tightly adhering corrosion products remaining on the prepared areas then spot prime with Resene ArmourZinc 110, then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of a Resene exterior waterborne paint. December 2016
Q. I have built a small timber and fibreglass cloth 14 foot punt that will be stored out of the water. Can I use Resene Armourcote 210 high build primer followed by Resene acrylic topcoats? A. Best system would be coat of Resene Armourcote 220 epoxy primer and two coats of Resene Uracryl 403. December 2016
Q. What paint would you recommend for painting our house? It is an old railway cottage mainly clad in native timber rusticated weatherboards, with some new treated pine weatherboards. The paint is generally in good condition with some patches where it will need sanding back? A. Treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer. Wash and scrub using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash paying particular attention to flaking areas. Remove all perished or unstable paint. Sand any exposed timber and surface imperfections. Consider using Resene TimberLock to condition and preserve the timber where it has been exposed. Spot prime bare areas with Resene Wood Primer. Fill any holes, lightly sand filled areas and reprime with Resene Quick Dry primer. Finish in two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 which is a semi-gloss acrylic. You may need a third coat to improve opacity for bright or light colours. December 2016
Q. What do I use over knots in a Lockwood home? A. Resene Aluminium Wood Primer would be our best option. Standard Resene Wood Primer is our second best option (but use two coats if using the standard Resene Wood Primer). December 2016
Q. How can we repaint the interior of our Lockwood? We want to paint so will cover the clear finish on the timber. A. Clean down the surfaces to be painted with Resene Interior Paint Cleaner. For best results sand with 220 grit sandpaper and then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Allow the sealer to cure for at least 48 hours with ventilation and then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. We recommend a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat be applied prior to application of topcoats - it's not essential but it does ensure system adhesion is developed. The Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is an adhesion coat and not designed to give opacity or high film build. Adhesion will take at least five days to develop with full cure being achieved 30 days post application. Good ventilation and warmth will ensure correct curing is achieved. Note that any board movement may expose the original varnish line. December 2016
Q. Is concrete sealer available and can this be tinted? A. We have an exterior Resene Concrete Stain that does come in a range of colours, or can be used as a clear sealer. Inside we have Resene Concrete Wax which is designed as a clear finish. December 2016
Q. Our front door finish seems brighter than the colour chart colour. We have used a glossy finish. The garage door in the same colour seems duller. A. Different gloss levels can make the colour seem different even though the colour is identical. A high gloss will make the colour seem brighter and cleaner. If the garage door was a flatter finish it will seem duller and muddier (earthier). December 2016
Q. A client has mould growth on the painted set joints of a large fibre-cement ceiling that is partly over a swimming pool, partly over an outdoor eating area. The painted ceiling clear of the set joints has no mould growth. The preparation and paint system used is unknown. Please advise how to eliminate the mould and your recommended paint specification for repainting. A. Treat the mould areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then apply two coats of a Resene exterior waterborne paint with added Resene MoulDefender. December 2016
Q. For a new build, what paint is recommended for walls and ceilings for bathrooms and an ensuite? Is it a special paint to prevent usual bathroom problems like mould etc and can that paint be used in other rooms e.g. living or bedrooms? A. We recommend Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. New Aqualine® plasterboard needs a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and for best results then an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of the Kitchen & Bathroom paint. It is essential to ensure the paint is well cured before subjecting the new paint to steam or condensation; at least two days drying with good ventilation is required. December 2016

Q. We are doing a new build and are planning to clad the house in vertical hardwood in either a shiplap or board and batten profile. We intend to stain the timber a dark grey or black Resene product. I need advice on which product you would recommend. I was hoping to use copper nailing to fix the battens so that they are proud and visible. Would the product we use obscure the nail heads when we paint? How hard would it be to ‘wipe’ the stain off the nail heads? Or should we just forget the copper nails? A. Stain uptake into new hardwood is low; to improve this we recommend leaving the timber to weather for a few months or scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label instructions. This will open up the timber surface to improve stain penetration. We recommend staining with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to the CoolColour™ version of the stain. The CoolColour stain versions are not cool to touch but do reflect more heat than the same colour made using non cool pigmentation. Wiping stain off the nail heads will be a time consuming practice but can be done if you wipe the stain immediately after application. December 2016

Q. Given I am looking at cladding my whole house with Kwila and staining it with Resene Waterborne Woodsman, is it a good idea to bulk Resene Timber and Deck Wash and pressure wash, then apply two coats before nailing up (to allow for shrinkage)? Also can I bulk apply using an airless spray gun? If so what tip should I use? A. Kwila is a very dense timber and when new does not allow stains to achieve penetration into the timber surface. Kwila also has a water soluble tannin extract that when the timber is new and then wetted it will run off and discolour concrete and the like. Our recommendation for staining Kwila is to leave the timber to weather for 2-3 months to open up the timber surface then stain, or alternatively scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions (this will wash out tannins) then stain. To get the best outcome you can do both. December 2016

Q. I am painting over waxed cork tiles. I have a small (10m2) floor that had hard wax applied over raw cork tiles 10 years ago. I would like to paint this floor in some Resene colour. How do I prepare it so the paint does not come off? It gets lots of sun and moderate foot traffic. A. The surface would need to be power sanded to remove the wax layer on the surface. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. December 2016
Q. What prep work do I need to do in order to paint wooden interior doors white? They are very smooth with little imperfections. Also what is the best paint to use and is the best way to paint them to lay them flat and use a roller? A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and then sand to give a mechanical key for the new paint. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Roll all products with the recommended roller sleeve. There will be roller texture but this is unavoidable. December 2016
Q. I'm going to be painting my living room ceiling. There are hairline cracks – what causes these? A. Hairline cracking indicates movement of the ceiling sections. December 2016
Q. My son has a very green paint in his bedroom and he wants to paint over it. It is painted wallpaper but they aren't planning to remove it. How do they stop it bleeding through? A. If the wall is painted in waterborne paint there should be no bleed of colour but it may be difficult to achieve complete coverage in two coats; we recommend applying a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then two topcoats in this situation. December 2016
Q. What kind of paint do I use on an indoor vinyl floor? A. There are many different vinyl types so we cannot be 100% sure of success but we have seen a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer applied (leave to cure 48 hours) then topcoated with two coats of Resene Lustacryl work on some projects. Painting does not replicate the original vinyl flooring features; the system is for a colour change only and is not suitable for wet areas such as bathrooms. December 2016
Q. I have some Resene Aquapoxy 2 pack purchased from two different stores. Some have stickers stating to tint hardener and not the base. I have been told this is incorrect and the base is to be tinted. Can you please clarify? A. Traditionally it has been the base of a 2 component paint that is tinted for a 2 component products. However this does not apply to Resene Aquapoxy. The recommended component that is tinted is the hardener. This is to ensure the Resene tint criteria are met. Up until recently we did place a sticker on top of the base can, highlighting that it was the hardener that was to be tinted. This was to ensure Resene staff tinted the right component. December 2016
Q. I want to paint my wooden deck. I can see tiny cracks appearing probably because it was never painted or stained. It doesn't seem to be of treated wood. I need some assistance on the best option I can go for, paint or stain? A. Stain would be the best option; I suggest you use Resene Woodsman Wood Oil stain (2 coats). December 2016
Q. I’m going to strip all the enamel off my scotia, door/window frames and repaint with a waterbased paint. Do I need to prime beforehand? Also, can I use the same paint system on exterior as well? Or do I need to use enamel on exterior windows? A. Yes, prime first with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and the same can be used for exterior timber priming. December 2016
Q. What paint do you recommend if I want to paint a concrete wall and use it as a projector screen? A. Assuming it is smooth internal painted concrete, you can use Resene Quick Dry and then two coats of Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Silver Sand. If it is not smooth, you can use the same system but the issue then becomes one of a suitable profile for projection. If the pointing is deep set then skimming is the only way, if bare then we would use MultiStop as the flushing material then Resene Sureseal and the topcoats. December 2016
Q. I need to paint my Decramastic roof. It has a few rust spots that I'm currently touching up. How should I paint it? A. Ensure the roof is free from lichen/mould/algae; if required treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Spot treat heavy areas of lichen with undiluted Resene Moss & Mould Killer. Detachment of lichen may take 2-3 weeks and then wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions. Ensure all lichen growth is washed off. Power tool clean areas of corrosion to remove lose corrosion deposits then spot prime these areas and any bare bitumen with two coats of Resene Galvo-Prime. Then finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. This system will restore a uniform colour but not the original texture of the chip surface. December 2016
Q. I wish to paint over Summerhill stone. I have waterblasted it and sprayed it with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. What should I then paint it with? A. Summerhill stone was a type of concrete brick that was popular in the 1950s and 60s. It supposedly never needed painting and you could have all sorts of abstract geometric patterns. However the stone is very porous and prone to mould and algal growth particularly on the more shaded elevations. Ensure areas of mould/algal growth are treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions then apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101. December 2016

Q. My house was completed in 1990 and the interior woodwork i.e. window frames, skirting boards etc are painted in a cream which appears to be oil paint straight onto the wood. When rubbed with meths the paint doesn't come off. There are a few small areas perhaps 5% that have begun to peel after 26 years. I have sanded these back to solid paint. I then used a primer for water based paint over oil. I put two coats on, then two coats of gloss finish (water based). The problem is a big difference in the thickness of the paint. The patched areas are covered but are really obvious because the paint isn't the same thickness as the original oil paint. I really don't want to have to remove all the oil paint in order to deal with 5% that has come away from the wood surface. What am I doing wrong? A. What you describe usually occurs when re painting older properties with a build up of paint layers over many years. If you feather the edges where paint is flaking when sanding back to a sound edge this can reduce but not eliminate the appearance of these areas. The other option is to use a product like Resene Timber Surface Prep. December 2016
Q. I want to paint a baby’s cot however have been warned about using the correct paint which will not be toxic. Can you please confirm which paint is best for this? A. We recommend Resene Lustacryl; the product is Environmental Choice Approved and hence contains no heavy metals or formaldehyde. December 2016
Q. I have a 'gold' anodised coffee table frame that I would like to paint black - is this possible? A. Yes it should be – we recommend Resene Vinyl Etch Black or an equivalent product. December 2016
Q. I have pre painted soffits - can I just sand and apply Resene Sonyx 101? A. If the soffits are pained in a waterborne paint there is no need to sand. Just clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions then apply the two coats of Resene Sonyx 101. December 2016
Q. We have native timber floorboards in our ensuite and main bathroom. Could you recommend which of the polyurethane products is the best to use? A. Resene Polythane (four coats) is the only product that I would recommend for this application. December 2016
Q. I recently purchased Resene Uracryl 2 pot paint and undercoat to renovate some MDF bedroom furniture. While it has applied went well and I am happy with the finish, I find that four days after the painting, that the strong solvent smell is still present and shows little sign of abating. We cannot use the room with the furniture in it. Is this normal and, if so, how long on average should it take to clear? A. Suggest that you remove the furniture to an area which has good ventilation. Under well ventilated conditions I would not expect any significant solvent odour to be present after seven days. December 2016
Q. We have the older version of Palisade® - it's a PVC shiplap the house was built in 1973. The coating is powdery now and the PVC is cracking in a few places. Mostly it's in good condition. The house is 228 square metres. It's located on a steep hill. Can we coat this or paint it? Will it need replacing in parts? A. Palisade® will embrittle upon aging and this is why some of the cladding will be subject to cracking. The cladding can be painted with two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint after cleaning the surface down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions. The surface must be chalk free before painting. We cannot advise on whether the cladding sections need replacing but definitely cracked sections as due to the age of the cladding cracked sections may compromise the weathertightness of the cladding. December 2016
Q. I have a bath with metal rust along the rim where the enamel has come away. I understand the best way to fix it is to sand away the rust then spot paint with enamel paint. Which type of paint do you recommend for this? A. I suggest that you look to use a 3M Rust and Paint removal disc to prepare the rusted sections then prime with Resene Rust-Arrest then topcoat with two coats of enamel. This recommendation does not apply to inner surfaces of the bath where there is immersion. December 2016
Q. About 6-months ago we moved into a new house, and I painted one of the line decks with one coat of Resene Woodsman Decking Stain. Because dirt and grime that had built up, I used sugar soap to clean, before mistakenly applying Resene Lumbersider waterborne low sheen which is what our builders painted the boards of our house with. It seems to have bonded ok, but is there anything I should be doing to ensure the finish remains? A. In this case you are probably lucky that the Resene Lumbersider has remained bonded to the stain. Usually require two coats of Resene Lumbersider for exterior durability. Resene stains (cladding and decking) are designed to erode from the surface upon weathering and a period of direct weathering is required when looking to convert to a solid paint finish. Ensure the cut ends are sealed as water uptake from these areas is usually the common failure mode of film forming paints applied to timber decking. December 2016
Q. We've got old plasterboard probably level 0 or 1 finish. What's the best way to get a paint finish? Do we wallpaper it or plaster it and sand down as much as possible? A. A full skim coat of plaster is probably the best way to achieve a paintable surface. December 2016
Q. Can you paint a topcoat of Resene Lumbersider over Resene X-200? A. Yes as long as the Resene X-200 is sound and chalk free. Where weathertightness is required a coat of Resene Lumbersider is not equivalent to a coat of Resene X-200. December 2016
Q. We have a coastal bach with ShadowClad® that is 10 years old. The cladding seems to be splitting open a little and want to know the best paint and how many undercoats and topcoats etc to use to best protect the cladding. A. What you are seeing is checking of the ShadowClad®. This is expected for this substrate; checking should not affect weathertightness. If it is a solid colour (not a semi-transparent stain) and there are no signs of flaking or peeling then wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions and then two coats of Resene Sonyx 101. If using a dark colour then use the CoolColour™ version of the colour. The CoolColour version of the colour will not render the surface cool to touch but will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation. December 2016
