Q&A   p. 24

Q. I am renovating an old bathroom and I wondered if it’s possible to use your Resene Walk-on to paint on mosaic tiles?

A. Yes, Resene Walk-on can be used for interior applications but requires a clear overcoat of Resene Concrete Wax.

May 2017

Q. Do you have a brochure or instructions on how to paint over my varnished doors? The house was built in the 1980s and the frames are stained rimu with standard ply doors also stained rimu. I have 9 to do and need to know what products to use, and how to do it to prevent bleeding or the paint coming off.

A. Ensure doors are degreased using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, paying particular attention to areas of hand contact. Then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (this product is not designed to give film build or opacity, in fact a thinner coat is best) and leave to cure for 48 hours before applying two coats of Resene Lustacryl or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages, the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion, as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

May 2017

Q. I have a section of concrete block wall that is rough-rendered. The wall has developed a crack less than 1mm wide. It is exposed to weather (no eaves) and allows water to seep in, and down the interior. Can you suggest a treatment to seal it?

A. I would suggest an application of two brush coats of Resene X-200 to the cracks and then applying Resene X-200 or a standard Resene exterior waterborne topcoat.

May 2017

Q. What is the best product to use on mould on the walls and ceilings?

A. Mould growth is a sign of one or a combination of the following; low light level, poor ventilation and moisture. To achieve long term control of mould, these conditions need to be changed.

Mould must first be treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Then apply 1-2 coats of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel finish. The Resene Quick Dry and finish coat contain extra anti-mould additives to inhibit mould growth, but to be successful, mould and spores must first be killed, using the Resene Moss & Mould treatment.

May 2017

Q. Our painters have asked me if we want the cedar shingles painter or stained. These were installed 20 years ago and are now a dark brown to black. They have never been painted or stained. If I agree to paint, what steps do I need to tell the painters to take prior to painting or staining? And, what stain or paint should we use? They have a stain chart of yours and have asked what colour I want and I just don't know whether to go ahead or not.

A. The black colour is without a doubt, mould growth and will need to be treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer before staining or painting. Given the age of the shingles, I would go for staining rather than painting with a film forming pigmented paint system.

May 2017

Q. Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer. Long story, but what would happen if I added some black oxide to this product, so that it is not white? Can I still use it; will it still act as a sealer?

A. Resene Sureseal is not a white colour but has an added colour pigment. We do not recommend tinting Resene sealers as this will affect their performance.

May 2017

Q. Please advise the correct primer/undercoat/topcoat for painting cedar. What topcoats do I use?

A. The correct product to use is Resene Wood Primer. The primer is a solventborne oil based primer, then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then two coats of Resene Lustacryl or Resene Enamacryl.

May 2017

Q. What paint is suitable for a kitchen splashback wall? I want to clean this wall of a greasy substance by using some grease cutter i.e. sugar soap.

A. After a thorough degrease, I would suggest a traditional solventborne enamel topcoat such as Resene Super Gloss.

May 2017

Q. How do you test block resistance of waterbased paint?

A. In simple terms two painted surfaces are allowed to cure then placed together, paint to paint and then weights are placed onto the panels and left for a time then the weights are removed and the painted items are then separated. If there is a clean break then the paint has block resistance.

May 2017

Q. I have applied an acrylic paint some time ago and it just doesn’t seem to want to dry properly. There used to be a fly spray dispenser in the area. Could that be the issue?

A. Yes, this can affect the paint if there is residual fly spray on the surface. The surface would likely need to be cleaned and sealed before applying further topcoats.

May 2017

Q. We are building a new house and part of the cladding is Eterpan® cement fibre sheets. What paint should I use on this? I want a low sheen or satin finish. Do I use a primer?

A. Apply a full prime coat of Resene Concrete Primer and then two coats of Resene Lumbersider. If planning to use a dark colour we recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour. CoolColours do not render the surface cool to touch but reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool technology.

May 2017

Q. Do you make a solvent based exterior semi-gloss enamel?

A. Semi-gloss solventborne enamel paints are not usually supplied in NZ. They undergo very rapid chalking upon weathering and for this reason are never recommended for exterior use. However Resene Lustacryl which is a waterborne enamel can be used for exterior painting.

May 2017

Q. We've had rats in our plasterboard ceiling and they have stained the ceiling. If we clean the area with sugar soap and repaint with your acrylic ceiling paint will the stains comes through? Can you recommend a paint that will stop the stain coming through? Perhaps a kind of primer?

A. Apply Resene Sureseal to the stain then apply a coat of Resene StainLock. I have not had this before but the combination of the solvent and waterborne stain sealer should achieve the required level of stain blocking.

May 2017

Q. Is your paint safe to use on kids toys and furniture? Also is there any sealer that is needed.

A. Environmental Choice Approved paints are suitable to use for painting timber toys and the like. If the wood is new then you can apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider and then leave to dry for at least two weeks to fully harden then wipe down with warm water and a cloth before handing over.

May 2017

Q. We want to paint white inside stained rafters. What prep and paint would you recommend? It appears to have a clear varnish on it.

A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 24 hours. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Flat.

May 2017

Q. Can you tell me what it is that makes paint electrically insulative or conductive? I am wondering if conductive paints have metal in them.

A. Some metallic paints can be electrically conductive but due to corrosion which occurs for many metals, conductive paints are limited to a small number of metals such as silver and nickel. These come at a high cost but provide exceptional performance (high conductivity). Our paint is designed to be cost-effective and conductivity is achieved with ultrafine dispersed carbon. This results in reduced conductivity compared to metals.

Insulation coatings rely on materials which are inherently non-conductive including the film-forming component and various inert fillers. The term dielectric is commonly used with performance based on dielectric breakdown strength (high voltages) and the film thickness is often the characteristic that is most important in these coatings.

May 2017

Q. I have just had my house painted with Resene X-200 membrane paint and it looks amazing. We detailed on the doors with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss. The painters got too much paint; we are left with an unopened 10 litre pail of Resene X-200 and thought we could paint the painted pine fence next to the house with it. Is this possible and if so what preparation/undercoat should we do? Also, if we do the edges of the fence in the Resene Lustacryl for consistency, what prep/undercoating is there?

A. Thoroughly scrub the fence down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions and then rinse well with copious amounts of fresh water. When dry, apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then 2 coats of Resene X-200.

If by edges, you mean painted timber, do the same preparation and priming, then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

May 2017

Q. Can Resene Forester, be used on CHH Shadowclad Ultra (which has a type of powder coat primer)?

A Yes, as long as the primer colour is the one to use under the Resene Forester system.

May 2017

Q. Do you make paint for ceramic floor tiles?

A. We have pigmented paints that can be used over an adhesion primer coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer.

May 2017

Q. Can I paint ceramic fire hearth tiles and if so, with what?

A. As long as you can maintain hand contact on the area when the fire is at full heat, then yes, however if embers fall onto the painted surface, the damage that results will require recoating.

May 2017

Q. We have old motel bathrooms lined in 70s Formica® board. It's in very good condition and we were hoping to be able to paint it with your products. Can you tell us what to use and how to do this? We are not painting in the shower areas.

A. Ensure the areas to be painted are thoroughly cleaned down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner used to label directions. Then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure without water or steam contact for 48 hours, and then apply two coats of any Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel. Adhesion and steam resistance will take up to 7 days to develop, so during this time, try to limit exposure of the new paint system to any form of water.

May 2017

Q. Do you have a primer suitable for PVC? I want to paint a Dincel exterior wall.

A. Any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat paint, such as Resene Lumbersider low sheen, Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss or Resene Hi-Glo gloss, can be applied direct to clean PVC without the need for a primer.

If you select a dark colour, we recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ version of the selected colour as the CoolColour version has a higher heat reflection value compared to the solid colour (note CoolColours are not cool to touch, but a CoolColour has a higher heat reflectance than the same colour made using non cool technology).

May 2017

Q. I have cedar cladding that looks in an ok condition - no obvious cupping etc. We have water and wind leaking through the south wall in a strong storm. The cedar has not been maintained and left to grey off naturally. Will stain help, or would painting give us a better ‘seal’?

A. Correctly installed cedar weatherboards should provide a weathertight cladding, even over an extended period. Unless there is cracking of the weatherboard face, to allow water ingress, there should be no water ingress. The best idea is to investigate the reason for the moisture first.

May 2017

Q. Is it ok to paint over wallpaper, if so, what do I need?

A. If painting over a vinyl wallpaper, then apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer first, then finish in two coats of your preferred Resene topcoat.

May 2017

Q. We are repainting a bedroom and half of it is new plasterboard/wallboard that has been stopped etc, the other half is old paint. Do we have to use Resene Broadwall and Resene primer undercoat on the two different surfaces or are we able to undercoat the whole room with primer undercoat?

A. You will need to use a dedicated wallboard sealer, such as Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer, for the bare plasterboard/stopped areas only.

May 2017

Q. I have a 1940 Spanish Bungalow, presently white. I would like a dark charcoal colour. Do I need any special kind of paint?

A. We would recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour to increase the heat reflection of the colour. The CoolColour version of a colour has greater near infra-red reflection and does not retain as much heat compared to the same colour made using no cool pigments. The use of a CoolColour version does not however mean that the cool colour paint will be cool to touch.

We recommend a white basecoat to achieve maximum heat reflection so your existing colour will give this. However the adhesion of the existing paint is the variable that we cannot assess. Application of dark colours will place stress on an existing paint system. Application of a CoolColour will reduce but not eliminate stress associated with application of a dark coloured topcoat.

May 2017

Q. When painting a room what is the best sequence for doing ceiling, walls, trim and skirting boards?

A. Always work from the top to the bottom.

May 2017

Q. Does wet on wet spraying on a ceiling achieve as good a finish as two coats with a roller, and/or as good as leaving it for two hours, before you second spray?

A. Spray application will always give the best finish, assuming the spray set up is what is required for the paint. Roller application will always give some degree of an orange peel effect, which is not that visible with a flat paint finish.

I see no reason why wet on wet application by spray of a ceiling paint would be a problem, unless the existing paint or ceiling is very porous and not sealed.

May 2017

Q. I am searching for care and cleaning instructions for Resene Colorwood stains.

A. A clear varnish system is recommended to be applied over a surface stained with Resene Colorwood. For this reason the stain should not need maintenance but the clear coats may. Given that the stain system is usually applied to an interior substrate the only maintenance that should be required is to keep the surface clean and apply a maintenance coat of the clear topcoat on areas showing loss of clear film due to wear.

May 2017

Q. I am doing up a 1926 house and the ceiling paint is very flaky. I had sanded this area but the paint still lifted off when I rolled the paint on. It's a plasterboard surface under the old paint. What is the best way to prep this area?

Borer holes are bad in some areas, should I try and fill these with putty? I have a tub of Rimu putty.

Also, should I fill the gaps between the skirting and wallpaper with silicon, or sand that paper away? We are painting over the wallpaper, do we need an undercoat?

A. Given the age of the property, the ceilings are more than likely to be fibrous plaster rather than modern paperfaced plasterboard. To achieve adhesion, our recommended sealer for fibrous plaster is Resene Sureseal, which can then be overcoated with standard waterborne interior wall paints. I would recommend removal of all of the existing ceiling paint (possibly with a broad flat scraper). Then apply the Resene Sureseal.

Given the age of the property there may be lead based paint present. Before beginning any surface preparation, tests should be done to ensure the old paint does not contain lead. Paint flakes with layers older than 1970 are likely to have lead in them. If lead based paints are identified on this job, then the OSH Guidelines for the Management of Lead-Based Paint must be read and followed. Where these guidelines are in conflict with any part of this specification, the guidelines must take precedence. Flakes of lead paints and any sanding dust need to be carefully managed and disposed of.

While you can fill borer holes they may reappear again as the holes are left when the borer grubs take wing.

If filling gaps between skirting board and wall, I would remove the wallpaper to expose bare substrate, prime the bare substrate with Resene Sureseal using a paintable sealant fill the gap.

May 2017

Q. We have a 1970 Lockwood bach with traditional lacquered timber which is becoming dated. We are thinking of whitewashing to lighten the appearance. Is this possible, if so, what is the best process?

A. Degrease the surfaces to be painted using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, then sand to profile the existing varnish surface (no need to sand off the varnish but need to achieve a dull finish). Then apply a full even coat of Resene Colorwood Whitewash. Then apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear. If you want to increase the level of whiteness, add one pottle of Resene Colorwood Enhance White per litre of the Resene Aquaclear.

Application of an even coat of the Resene Colorwood Whitewash is required to achieve an even look. Note the boards will move and this may expose a line of the original varnish.

May 2017

Q. Can I paint acrylic paint for a preferred matte finish, over what looks like a semi-gloss enamel paint? If so, how do I prepare the surface?

A. You can, but the existing enamel paint will need to be thoroughly sanded and then undercoated with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before topcoating.

May 2017

Q. I have just sanded back our coffee table made from recycled timber. It had polyurethane on it but I would like a more matte oil base look. What would I use?

A. The only suggestion would be to use Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Flat varnish. Complete removal of the varnish would be required before you could oil the surface, and this is not easy to achieve.

May 2017

Q. I would like help navigating the finish of the colours I have chosen. For example, I am not sure how to know or indicate the availability of a specific colour in flat, satin, semi-gloss, etc.

A. Resene colours can be tinted in most Resene paint finishes both interior and exterior application. We do not have specific colours for a product or limits on where colours can be used.

May 2017

Q. I am slowly prepping my house for painting in summer. I have sanded a few bits back to bare boards, do I need to put anything on this before winter sets in and before I paint? If so, what would I use? I have a veranda that is bare wood; do I need to put anything on this prior to painting it?

A. At the minimum, any bare areas should be primed with the recommended primer, I suggest Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Note that we do have a wintergrade version of the primer, Resene Wintergrade Quick Dry, for application, outside of our standard recommended application conditions.

May 2017

Q. Four years ago we painted our older outside window frames with a waterborne white enamel but the paint on windows on the sunny side has broken down terribly. I now want to use an enamel base paint after sanding.

A. The alternative solventborne topcoat is Resene Super Gloss enamel but if your comment ‘broken down terribly’ refers to surface chalking the same will occur with the solventborne enamel but at a much faster rate of chalking. If the failure is flaking/peeling then this is not associated with the topcoat paint type but more likely due to surface preparation.

May 2017

Q. We are wanting to limewash brickwork around a fireplace and wonder if you have a suitable product.

A. Use Resene Colorwood Whitewash then overcoat with 1-2 coats of Resene Aquaclear (extra coats may be required depending upon how porous the bricks are). If the degree of white is not sufficient then for the second coat add 1 pottle of Resene Colorwood Enhance White per litre of Resene Aquaclear. This system can only be used for surfaces that hand contact can be maintained when the fire is at full heat.

May 2017

Q. Our new home is currently being built. The Rockcote plaster has had two coats of paint over three days when the weather has been a combination of damp, drizzly and raining. Do we need to be concerned that the painting has happened in less than ideal weather conditions?

A. It depends upon what paint was used and if the paint had achieved sufficient cure - suggest you go back to the paint applicator and see what their response is. Note Resene does have a number of wintergrade formations which do allow application under colder conditions.

May 2017

Q. Is Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer suitable for priming prepainted aluminium window frames for painting? Or is there another product more suitable i.e. metal etching primer?

A. Wash windows with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Then apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 followed by two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.

June 2017

Q. Does dark paint (e.g. charcoal/dark blue) work okay on exterior Hardiplank® walls? I gather surfaces can end up warping or cracking due to effects of heat and moisture.

A. For this situation, I would recommend the colour be tinted in Resene Sonyx 101 and that you use the CoolColour™ formulation, the CoolColour version of the colour will reflect more heat than the same colour tinted using the non-CoolColour tint formulation, however while CoolColours are not cool to touch they do reflect more heat. This is not a guarantee there would not be heat related issues.

June 2017

Q. With the colder weather and longer drying times, is there an additive for such paints as Resene X-200, Resene X-400, Resene Sonyx 101 and Resene Lumbersider to speed up drying?

A. A number of Resene paints are available as wintergrade formulations, which allow the application of paints under conditions that are not suitable for the standard formulations. These products include Resene Wintergrade Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene Wintergrade Hi-Glo, Resene Wintergrade Sonyx, Resene Wintergrade Lumbersider and Resene Wintergrade X-200.

June 2017

Q. Is Resene Quick Dry suitable for undercoating fibre cement sheet?

A. Our recommended product for priming fibre cement is Resene Concrete Primer.

June 2017

Q. I'm preparing a house to paint and it has lots of trees around it, so it has a mould problem. Should I treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer before or after painting or what should I do to stop it?

A. Yes, treat all areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. After painting, apply Resene Deep Clean diluted and used to label instructions either at the beginning of spring or autumn. If particularly bad, a twice yearly application of Resene Deep Clean may be required.

June 2017

Q. Can Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield be used on painted or unpainted wooden fences?

A. Not direct to timber but Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield can be used over a pigmented waterborne Resene exterior timber paint.

June 2017

Q. I have an older home with oil based high gloss paint on the door surrounds and skirting board. I have sanded the surfaces which are in good condition but are yellowing with a few marks. I have painted some of the surfaces with waterborne enamel. The paint, weeks after application, does not appear to stick well. Should I be applying some sort of undercoat first or giving heavier sandpapering to overcome the high gloss hard surface that I am applying the paint to?

A. I would recommend a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat be applied after degreasing, sanding and removal of sanding dusts.

June 2017

Q. We are building a new home by the beach. It will be clad in Shadowclad®. The specs for the Shadowclad state that it is preferable to use lighter colours that have a LRV of 40% or greater. I would prefer to use a darker colour if possible and was under the impression that Resene had a U.V. resistant paint for dark colours. Can you please let me know if that is the case or if you would still advise to use lighter colours? Would I be able to send the plan to get some advice on the colours?

A. Resene has CoolColour™ versions of dark Resene colours, however the LRV of the non and cool version of any colour is the same as LRV is a measure of light reflection only. What changes is the TSR (total solar reflectance) of the CoolColour version. The TSR which is a measure of heat reflection, is always higher for the CoolColour version of a colour. To achieve the maximum CoolColour benefit, two coats of CoolColour topcoat needs to be applied over a white base coat. Note that CoolColours are not cool to touch, but do reflect more heat than the non-cool version of the same colour.

June 2017

Q. Our house is LINEA® about 6-7 years old and the paint has faded; it’s best not to sand, just wash then paint? Is this correct?

A. If the paint has chalked, and then a scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, should produce a chalk free surface suitable for the repaint.

If there is little paint left, then I suggest a full coat of Resene Concrete Primer and two coats of Resene Sonyx 101. If using a dark colour, then we recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ version of the topcoat. Resene CoolColours are not cool to touch but do reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool technology.

June 2017

Q. I need to repair rust spots and then repaint a shipping container.

A. If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist, then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Rinse clean or hose down with fresh water, ensuring all salts are also removed. All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure water blasting, taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure waterblasting, taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Where under-film corrosion is taking place the existing paint must first be removed as above and remove under film corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish. The performance of the subsequent paint systems will be largely dependent on the thoroughness of this surface preparation stage.

Ensure all edges of damaged paint are sound and immediately spot prime all areas of corrosion and any other bare metal with a full coat of Resene ArmourZinc 110. Apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint.

June 2017

Q. I am about to renovate a single bay villa in Herne Bay. I would like to paint the inside and outside white, including all trims. The door would be black. All picket fences would be white. The roof I would like grey. I will replace some of the roof with COLORSTEEL and paint the rest. I am unsure of what paint to use - it will be professionally painted but I would like to make sure the right paint is used. Most of the exterior of the villa will be built with new wood.

A. I recommend using Resene Lumbersider for new fence timbers, for remaining new timber (except LOSP treated timber) apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and for exterior weatherboards finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

For the door, apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then two coats of Resene Enamacryl CoolColour™ in Resene Black. For interior woodwork, apply a prime coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

For new plasterboard (excludes wet areas) apply a coat of Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. For wet areas apply a coat of Resene Sureseal, then Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom.

June 2017

Q. We have just renovated our bathroom and have an existing timber window within the shower enclosure. The rimu timber architraves have started turning black. Is there a product we can use to seal the timber and stop the timber from going black and eventually rotting?

A. As I suspect you know, the black is mould growth due to atmospheric conditions. You can treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions, but unless the timber is painted with a pigmented system, or the conditions are changed, the mould growth will return.

June 2017

Q. I want to paint a baby's cot. What paint do you recommend? The cot is painted white and I only need to sand it a little. It's in good condition.

A. Sand, then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Leave to dry for two weeks in a well ventilated area, then wipe down with a cloth and warm water before placing back into use.

June 2017

Q. I am planning to paint my Shadowclad® Ultra with Resene Forester timber stain. Can you tell me if I have to coat both sides of the Shadowclad Ultra?

A. As with all exterior timber substrates it should be envelope sealed. Cut edges will need to be primed, as will the back of the Shadowclad Ultra if it does not come preprimed. You would not need to apply Resene Forester timber stain coating to the back of the Shadowclad Ultra.

June 2017

Q. To paint over old oil based paint, would your Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer be ok?

A. I would recommend to sand and then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat.

June 2017

Q. We have just bought a 1986 home which was built using macrocarpa. We want to know if it's possible to paint the macrocarpa ceilings and walls white and if so, how do we best do this and will it be easy to maintain? They are varnished.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Flat (ceilings). Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion, as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

June 2017

Q. I would like some help to specify the paint finish for a dark colour to a boat shed over the water in the Marlborough Sounds. The paint finish is over H3.1, pine weatherboard at this stage. It is in a fairly tough environment, plus the Council requires dark colours preferably.

A. We recommend a primer coat of Resene Wood Primer. Then undercoat using Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Finish with two topcoats of Resene Sonyx 101 CoolColour™. Note CoolColours will not render the surface cool to touch, but the CoolColour version will reflect more heat than the same colour made as a non-CoolColour.

June 2017

Q. I was wondering if I could paint over or maybe even wallpaper over old Seratone® walls? I have very ugly Seratone in my dining room and a tight budget to redecorate.

A. Painting may be the best option. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom for bathroom walls and the like, (we do not recommend any system for shower linings). Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

June 2017

Q. We had the whiteboard paint applied. We thought we needed a new coat so we did as much erasing as possible then re-applied. Unfortunately we can still see some of the old writing, what would you advise us to do? Do we paint white over the whiteboard paint then apply another coat of whiteboard paint?

A. Yes you will have to go back to a white painted base then reapply the two coats of Resene Write-On Wall Paint. Wiping with meths and a cloth (change cloth regularly) is the best way to remove residual marker pen. Thoroughly sand the Resene Write-On Wall Paint surface and then re-apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen and then two coats of Resene Write-On Wall Paint.

June 2017

Q. Can you tell me if Resene Paint Prep and Housewash will remove salty sea spray residue from painted weatherboards and if not do you have something that will?

A. Resene Paint Prep and Housewash is designed to remove surface chalking from a painted surface. It will remove some sea salt as any water washing will. Prolonged rinsing with water is the best way to remove salt. After washing down you could apply a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat over a sound surface prior to topcoating with two coats of waterborne topcoat.

June 2017

Q. We are painting our kitchen and we have an existing painted splashback. We now need to change the colour of the splashback. Can I paint the front of a splashback or will I need to have it removed and new one installed?

A. We do not recommend painting the exposed side of a splashback as the glass does provide protection to the paint layer from intense heat or splashes. Yes it can be done but we cannot guarantee that the paint will remain unaffected in use. For a colour change normally the splashback is removed and a new one installed with the new colour.

June 2017

Q. I accidentally used waterborne enamel on a bedroom wall. I meant to use waterborne acrylic. Can I repaint with waterborne acrylic over the waterborne enamel?

A. Waterborne enamels are suitable for use on bedroom walls as the paint finish is more resistant to wear than a conventional waterborne paint finish. You don’t need to recoat it.

June 2017

Q. I'm living in a Lockwood home. The varnish on some of the walls in the laundry room is almost completely worn away. I want to re-stain or re-varnish. I'm happy with the current colour; I just need to know what product to use. There was a half can of Resene Aquaclear still in the house. Is that what is recommended?

A. You can use Resene Aquaclear for the clear coating, after sanding the existing varnish to provide a mechanical key (no need to sand back to bare timber). The original clear applied when the timber was new was most likely a solventborne varnish which will have darkened over time. Given this there may be colour variations when clear recoating.

June 2017

Q. I am building a house and am looking for a product to paint over the exterior walls which are timber look Hardiplank®. I am after a stained timber look as opposed to painted finish. Hardiplank® says that using a wood stain will instantly void the warranty. I have heard you have a product that looks like a stain that won't void the warranty.

A. We recommend Resene Forester.

June 2017

Q. We are painting old interior timber windows. It has been suggested that we use an oil based undercoat first. Can I use Resene Enamel Undercoat with a Lustacryl waterbased topcoat? It’s weathered cedar/totara we think, with no obvious varnish or stain remaining (house was built in 1940s).

A. If it is totara, then you can only use Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, as application of Resene Wood Primer to this timber does not allow the Resene Wood Primer to dry.

June 2017

Q. We have a Decramastic tile roof and were wondering if it can be painted. We are a rural property and collect rainwater from the roof for our household use.

A. Decramastic roofing tiles, also known as Decrabond or pressed metal tiles were widely used in New Zealand during the 1970s and 1980s. Made of galvanised steel with a bitumen overlay, the tiles were known for being lightweight and easily installed. Upon weathering the tiles will lose chip texture erosion of the bitumen base back to base metal which at the extreme will present with corrosion.

This specification will restore colour but not the original chip texture.

Step 1: Spot treat areas of heavy lichen infestation with Resene Moss and Mould Killer diluted 1:1 with water and leave for 48 hours before proceeding.

Step 2: Treat areas of moss/lichen infestation a few weeks prior to the commencement of painting with a saturation coat of Resene Deep Clean diluted and used to label instructions. Resene Deep Clean is a slow release bio kill agent. Resene Deep Clean is best applied under overcast conditions to maximise wetting time.

Step 3: Wash down with water to remove all dirt, grease, moss and mould residue, dust, and other contaminants. Waterblasting is not recommended as this will result in the dislodgement of chip. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. Resene recommend that downpipes are disconnected during this process and that gutters are thoroughly cleaned out before reconnecting downpipes.

Step 4: All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure waterblasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure water-blasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Where under-film corrosion is taking place the existing paint must first be removed and then remove corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish. It is strongly recommended that any badly rusted sections of galvanised steel be replaced.

Prime any bare metal or bitumen areas with Resene Galvo-Prime then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

June 2017

Q. I have an artwork painted on sheets of ply. It was undercoated with, I think, a white primer (not terribly well, but that's okay). The art itself, was painted in acrylic art paints. The entire artwork was on display out-of-doors for about three months, and as a result got a little mouldy.

Would you be able to recommend a suitable product to clean and arrest the mould/mildew? Obviously I don't want to damage the artwork, with something too harsh.

A. We recommend Resene Deep Clean diluted and used to label instructions, not an instant kill but it will work over time.

June 2017

Q. What Resene paint would you recommend for a plastic (acrylic) vanity? I would need a very small quantity.

A. Any Resene topcoat will develop very good adhesion to methacrylate plastics; for small quantities I suggest a Resene testpot.

June 2017

Q. I am seeking a product to specify for painting cracked, concrete steps. Do you have one or more products that you can recommend for this purpose?

A. Repairs to hairline cracks can be a difficult thing to achieve and ensure that cracking does not reappear again. If the cracks are due to earthquakes, then cracking may reoccur in a future quake. Epoxy injection is the best way to address cracking but this will require the services of a specialist company. If you are looking for an alternative to epoxy injection, then the cracks must be ground out to provide a ‘v’’ for filling with a product such as Resene Construction Systems MultiStop or sandable two pack epoxy filler.

June 2017

Q. Can I paint at temperatures down to 4 degrees C. using Resene semi-gloss on Scyon cement weatherboards?

A. Yes but you will need to use the Resene Wintergrade Sonyx 101 formulation.

June 2017

Q. What do you recommend for coating new aqua plasterboard in the kitchen and bathroom?

A. The sealer is Resene Sureseal, and then you can over coat with a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any of the Resene waterborne enamel kitchen and bathroom finishes, such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom.

June 2017

Q. I am repainting a 30 year old house with Resene Lumbersider. There are a few patches which are old bare wood. Should I prime these patches? If so what paint should I use?

A. If the timber is Totara or Matai prime bare timber with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat; for all other timbers use Resene Wood Primer.

June 2017

Q. Can I use a Resene oil based paint system over an epoxy primer?

A. I would normality recommend use of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Some epoxy formulations inhibit the cure of air drying paints such as Resene Wood Primer.

June 2017

Q. What primer is best for a kauri deck - I have cleaned it back to bare wood, but it’s not good enough for oiling so it will need to be repainted.

A. We recommend Resene Wood Primer.

June 2017

Q. I have some interior Resene Lusta-Glo semi-gloss enamel paint. Is this suitable for painting the walls of a bathroom? They have recently been painted with an all in one ceiling paint and I am hoping this semi-gloss will be able to go straight over top.

A. You will need to apply a coat of Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo.

June 2017

Q. How do you remove write on paint on a wall? Can you paint over it or do have to use special product to remove it?

A. Thoroughly sand to a dull finish then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Zylone Sheen.

June 2017

Q. We are re-painting walls to Resene Quarter Dutch White on top of an existing frog green colour. What cover/undercoat should we use to stop the green?

A. Suggest you apply a coat of Resene Acrylic Undercoat tinted to Resene Varishade 1.

June 2017

Q. We have an existing Resene Uracryl 403 coating in showers. When repainting should we use Resene Vinyl Etch primer or sand and paint directly onto the existing coating?

A. Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoats do not need to be sanded or etch primed for recoating with the same product. The existing coating needs to be clean and free of all contaminants; in your situation soap/body fat residues.

June 2017

Q. I would like to specify ‘Sheer Black’ wood oil stain for an internal plywood ceiling.

I understand ‘Sheer Black’ is in the Resene Woodsman range for external use but it is my understanding ‘Sheer Black’ colour can be specified as a Resene Colorwood product suitable for interior staining, is this correct? Is this Resene Colorwood range suitable for internal plywood linings for ceilings/walls?

A. We would not recommend using Resene Woodsman for interior but Resene Colorwood can be used to stain interior timbers. Resene Colorwood is normally clear coated with Resene Aquaclear.

June 2017

Q. We have just renovated our bathroom. We have sanded the final layer of plaster and sealed it with two coats of Resene Sureseal. My partner likes the way it looks as is. Is it ok to leave it like this as our final coat, or is it necessary to paint it with an acrylic?

A. Resene Sureseal will provide the required level of sealing and in theory does not need to be topcoated; however, we always recommend topcoating especially in a wet area such as bathrooms. If you want, we can look to provide a colour match of the Resene Sureseal colour in a suitable Resene topcoat.

June 2017

Q. Can I use a court paint to paint my new concrete slab for basketball?

A. I suggest you use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. The concrete will need to be diamond ground to produce an even texture similar to 180 grit sandpaper, then apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

June 2017

Q. I have a concrete wall which has only water-based acrylic paint on it and I am wondering if there is a sealer or epoxy that could be applied over the acrylic to seal it? If not, is there any product that would be suitable to coat over acrylic and is a lot more weathertight?

A. Resene X-200 will give a weathertight finish to the exterior face but not hold back water coming through the concrete.

June 2017

Q. I'm currently working on a project and am required to establish a 'finishing procedure' for Resene Blast Grey 1 on steel work.

On our drawings we are proposing: Steel finish: sand blast 2.5 grit [SA2.5], Zinc Silicate [ZnSi] primer, then topcoat with Resene Blast Grey. Is this good preparation for external and internal steelwork? We have been advised to put a 220 epoxy coat over the zinc silicate before applying the topcoat?

A. For steel exterior protection we use AS/NZS 2312 Part 1. For exterior steel, I would spec at minimum the PUR4 system (note for the primer use Resene ArmourZinc 120) and then as the topcoat use Resene Imperite IF 503 Metallics applied to achieve a dry film thickness and finish with a coat of any Resene Uracryl 400 Series UVS Cleat to achieve a dry film thickness of 75 microns. For interior steel, the same prep and priming, but you can omit the Resene Armourcote 510.

Resene Imperite IF 503 Metallics need to be spray applied, note touch up of metallic finish is difficult to do and maintain aesthetics. Where there is a difference in spec between ex/interior steel it is often wise to spec the same, exterior system for all as this avoids any risk of the interior steel ending up on exterior exposure sections.

June 2017

Q. I am using HardiGroove® as a splashback and want a hard washable paint that will take a lot of cleaning.

A. Prime with Resene Sureseal and follow with a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. The topcoat will not withstand alkali based cleaning agents.

June 2017

Q. It has been suggested to me, that deliberately increasing the orange peel effect with a special roller, hides surface imperfections. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I am concerned that a heavy orange peel surface in a kitchen, which has no range hood, will make it harder to clean kitchen grease off the walls.

A. You are correct that a degree of orange peel can assist in hiding surface imperfections but a better way is to use a flat paint such as Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom.

June 2017

Q. Do you sell a concrete paint that has a low VOC rating that is suitable for an old, unpainted concrete floor?

A. We recommend Resene Aquapoxy system applied to a diamond ground floor.

June 2017

Q. Can you paint over the colour on aluminium joinery? There is no apparent pitting or corrosion.

A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label directions then lightly abrade using a red Scotchbrite pad. Then apply Resene Galvo-Prime and finish with two coats of Resene Enamacryl or Resene Lustacryl.

June 2017

Q. I have brown quarry tiles on the floor in my interior porch and outside on my covered veranda. I hate the colour. Can I paint these tiles and what products should I use? The tiles are very old and not shiny.

A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-On and a final coat of Resene Concrete Wax.

June 2017

Q. I intend to paint my kitchen and bathroom with Resene enamel white high gloss. The walls of both rooms are plaster on brick so I was going to first paint the walls with Resene Sureseal to seal the plaster. Is Resene Sureseal as an undercoat compatible with enamel white high gloss?

A. Resene Sureseal can be overcoated with conventional single pack solventborne enamels.

June 2017

Q. Do you have a product that can be painted onto wood decking to produce a grip surface? I was thinking of something like a bitumen coat, with coarse sand added between the two coats, but wasn’t sure if this would work.

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

June 2017

Q. What paint system would I use on fibrolite on the exterior?

A. If new, Resene Concrete Primer and then finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101.

June 2017

Q. When wallpapering walls that have been previously painted and in good condition, is it necessary to pigment seal before papering? Also, is it necessary to size the wall, if you are using the paste the wall technique?

A. When hanging wallpaper over acrylic paint, use the following system: Ensure the area to be wallpapered is clean, by washing the entire wall with sugar soap. Then wash again with clean water and let dry. Then sand the entire surface with 120/150 grit sandpaper. Dust entire surface. Coat entire surface with Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer - the sealer should be thinned by approximately 5 per cent to ensure full penetration into the substrate. Leave 1 week. When dry and cured, sand entire wall with 80 grit sandpaper, to provide a good and adequate key for size and paste to adhere to. Dust entire surface to completely remove all dust particles. If using paste-the-wall wallpaper it is recommended to size the walls with ShurStik Wallpaper Size.

June 2017

Q. We are using a contractor to paint our roof using Resene Summit Roof paint (Bright Charcoal). This is the same paint as the roof was painted in approx. 6 years ago. The north side of the roof has suffered extensive blistering and the contractor is saying that it was poor preparation of the original paint. They are tearing very large layers of paint from the roof and it is mostly back to base metal. Are you able to advise if this could be poor application 6 years ago or whether it is more likely the new application? There was no blistering before the roof was newly painted last week.

A. If it is peeled back to bare substrate, then the adhesion issue is with the first coat of paint that was originally applied. Successive application of paint layers will have placed stress on the adhesion of the first coat and when the stress exceeds the adhesion strength of the paint then it will delaminate/blister. It can be difficult to visually see this issue when repainting unless there is an existing sign of blistering or lifting of the existing paint.

June 2017

Q. We have a very old house with wooden floorboards. I would like to paint the floor in the laundry which is sound, but not pretty. What kind of paint should I use?

It’s a rather neglected 100 year old house, so the floor is possibly matai. It looks solid enough but has joins where rooms have been added or bits cut out. It’s probably T&G. I thought of paint just for the durability and to hide the differences but having said that, it’s an old house and we are not looking for perfection.

A. Clean the floor down using sugar soap, ensure the floor is mopped with many water changes, to remove all sugar soap residue. When dry, apply a prime coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks, until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

June 2017

Q. Can you inform me of a suitable sealer and topcoat for Hardiflex® in an exterior situation?

A. If new, prime with Resene Concrete Primer and finish with 2 coats of any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat. Typically Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) or Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) is used.

June 2017

Q. What is the recipe to paint shoes with water based paint?

A. I am not aware of any specific formulation, but people have used Resene testpot colours for a temporary colour change.

June 2017

Q. We have put three coats of Resene Qristal Clear on to a floor, with the first coat going on about 40 hours ago and the last about 22 hours ago, but we are not happy with the sanding job on the boards (we were very rushed for time and there are scuff marks from the sander where the wood grain has been blurred) so we need to strip the coating back to redo the floor. Would it be easier to do it while the poly is still reasonably fresh (i.e. do it asap) or would we be best to let it cure a bit longer? Any advice appreciated, I know it's not going to be fun.

A. The further along the cure the better. If the polyurethane is soft, then it will ball up when sanding.

June 2017

Q. I want to re-coat a rimu wooden cot; I believe its stained rimu. I'm not sure what product is safe to use.

A. Suggest that you sand using 220 grit sandpaper then dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Allow to cure for at least two weeks in a well ventilated area then wipe down painted surfaces with a cloth and warm water, changing water at least once during this. When dry you can put the cot back into service. Both paint products are Environmental Choice Approved.

June 2017

Q. Can I use wallpaper in a bathroom on a wall not near the shower?

A. Most modern wallcoverings have an easy-care vinyl coat which is designed to withstand normal day-to-day activities, but some are designed for their aesthetic value only. Defining whether or not wallpaper is suitable in your bathroom is largely dependent on your lifestyle and the way you use your space. There is no simple yes or no answer. Most of the time wallpaper will be an appropriate choice. Caution should be taken if the bathroom is a poorly ventilated space as excessive moisture/humidity could affect the adhesion of the wallpaper to the wall. Check the physical properties and cleaning abilities of the wallpaper itself to make sure you are choosing the ideal wallpaper for your bathroom. For a bathroom a scrubbable wallpaper would be ideal. This information would generally be found on the product label or in the wallpaper books. If you do select a wallpaper that is not scrubbable it could be a good idea to purchase an extra roll (or more depending on the size of the space you are proposing to wallpaper). This way if damage were to occur in the future you would have to wallpaper needed to repair it.

June 2017

Q. Can timber stained with a similar mineral oil stain, be overcoated with a waterborne or solventborne wood stain?

A. Unfortunately mineral oil stains by definition do not dry or cure as traditional wood stains do: so if you subsequently apply a coat of solventborne or waterborne stain there is a likelihood of bubbling and flaking. You can only apply “like for like’, so mineral oil can be applied over itself and other mineral oil stains.

July 2017

Q. We have used Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path to paint the floor of our brewery shop (occasionally we have a wet floor and we didn't want to have any customer accidents).

It looked great when it was first painted, and no doubt it's very, very non slip. But after some traffic, it is dirty with dust and footprints. It doesn't sweep clean, nor scrub clean (being on an interior shed floor, we can't hose or waterblast it). Can you please advise the best way to clean or fix this problem?

A. Unfortunately, to achieve the best wet slip resistance the compromise is ease of cleaning. The only suggestion of cleaning Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path surfaces is to use a cleaner such as Handy Andy and lightly scrub with a stiff nylon broom then rinse clean.

July 2017

Q. We manufacture a SIP panel system using Triboard as the skins. We need a (preferably) oil based sealer undercoat, capable of withstanding some rain for up to a fortnight.

A. The only suggestion would be Resene Sureseal.

July 2017

Q. I have bought an old caravan and I want to paint the inside. This would mean all the walls, over the wallpaper etc. Could you please tell me how I go about this? I think the wallpaper is just standard old school wallpaper; sorry I know that probably isn't much help and the wood is plastic coating.

A. Could you strip the wallpaper? If not, then for these areas apply a full coat of Resene Sureseal. Then using a plasterboard stopping compound, flush fill defects and then when the plaster is dry, sand, dust off and reseal the plastered area with Resene Sureseal. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

July 2017

Q. I am trying to find a product to seal an old concrete block unpainted wall.

A. Resene X-200 is the only system available from Resene to render masonry weathertight, not watertight.

July 2017

Q. What is the best sealer/undercoat to use as a first coat on MDF board?

A. We recommend Resene Quick Dry.

July 2017

Q. I have a wooden fence that was previously stained with Resene Waterborne Woodsman (a dark colour) about five years ago. It's fairly weathered now and I was wondering if there was any way it could be painted, and if so, what sort of primer/sealer I should use to prevent any of the old stain from potentially showing through? I think it might need something that will provide a stronger barrier than Resene Quick Dry. Also, I presume once it's sealed a light coloured Resene Lumbersider would be okay to use as topcoat?

A. It is possible to paint over Resene Woodsman if it is weathered. Treat for mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer. Then give the fence a really good scrub with Resene Timber & Deck Wash. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry. Then sand any exposed timber and surface imperfections. As the fence has weathered, I would recommend priming with Resene Wood Primer. Resene Lumbersider would be an ideal topcoat for your fence.

July 2017

Q. We have exposed beams that are varnished on our ceiling, and would like to paint them white. How should we do this?

A. Ensure the beams are clean and then apply a coat of Resene StainLock, then two coats of any Resene interior waterborne paint, such as Resene SpaceCote Flat.

July 2017

Q. I am currently involved in the resurfacing of a train station platform. One of the items to be addressed is the white line at the edge of the platform.

A. We would offer Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path for this application. The product meets the requirements set out in NZTA P33 2017. The paint is a waterborne product and so can easily be recoated when required. The recoat cycle is wholly dependent upon wear.

July 2017

Q. What Resene paint is recommended for a high-build waterproof membrane over exterior vertical concrete surfaces (will cover hairline cracking completely)?

A. We recommend Resene X-200.

July 2017

Q. I am in the process of making a concrete bench top for an outdoor BBQ area. I intend to grind and polish the concrete and would like some help with what I should do with regards to sealing it.

A. We recommend a Resene Concrete Clear system, gloss first then another 2-3 coats of your preferred gloss level.

July 2017

Q. Our plaster on polystyrene 30 year old house was painted 20 years ago and needs a weathertight finish. What Resene product would you recommend we use?

A. We recommend Resene X-200.

July 2017

Q. Does Resene Lustacryl come in other bases apart from white so can be tinted to a darker colour?

A. You can get Resene Lustacryl tinted to almost all Resene colours.

July 2017

Q. We have a previously stained weatherboard house. We would like to paint the house a lighter colour using Resene Woodsman. Can you please advise us if this is possible or would we have to put a darker colour on?

A. Stains are semi-transparent which means that the final stain colour will always be moderated changed by the existing colour to which the stain is applied; this can be timber or an existing stain colour. Given this, it is difficult using a stain to lighten an existing stain colour. Dark over light does work but not light over dark.

July 2017

Q. I am after some advice regarding painting Lockwood walls and joinery. Do I need to sand and dull off the current varnish before I start any of the painting process? Please advise me of the correct system to painting a Lockwood, also the do's and don’ts.

A. To follow is our standard specification for painting the interior varnish work in a Lockwood house with a fully pigmented paint system:

Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow curing without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not designed to give film build or opacity and is best applied to give a thin film of paint. The adhesion of the Waterborne Smooth Service Sealer is aided by sanding to de-gloss the varnished surface but this is not essential for system performance.

July 2017

Q. We have wallpaper in our home; it has been up for 10+ years. In places, it has come unstuck and I’m keen to know the best approach on how to fix it. A few bits are around our fireplace - the paper is quite brittle and I feel that if we were to try and move it to re-paste, it might break.

A. Lift affected areas and dampen with a sponge over a period of 7-10 minutes, to completely relax the paper. Apply a small amount of ShurStik - Wallpaper Stick Down adhesive under affected area and press back firmly. Immediately remove any residue from surface with a damp to wet cloth.

This is not a guaranteed fix, but is the best suggestion we have for this situation. It is possible your wallpaper may break if it is very brittle. You will need to weigh up the risk before trying the repair.

July 2017

Q. I’m looking for a paint to provide extra grip for some steel ramps. The deck treads are perforated. It’s a small surface area, but gets slippery when wet.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Galvo One, then two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

July 2017

Q. I have a container of Halls Beeline Premixed Wallpaper Paste that was opened a few months ago, is it still okay to use?

A. It can depend on how it’s stored. If the bucket was partially used, the air in the bucket can change the viscosity of the paste. It can become very watery and this would not be usable. If the paste is the same consistency of when it was first used, it should be fine to use. If there is any doubt, dispose of the paste and use a fresh container.

July 2017

Q. I'm restoring a 7m DMW boat trailer, it was fully galvanised, most of it is still in good condition and I can't justify the full blast and re-galvanise job. There are some areas in the centre lowest points that have rust etc. I've cleaned it all back (just mechanically) at this stage. Can you recommend a paint system of yours that I could recoat with?

I was thinking of a two-pot base primer, even epoxy based. I want it to last as long as possible and be durable.

A. Wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash to remove salt, then spot prime bare prepared areas of corrosion with a good wet coat of Resene ArmourZinc 120. Then apply two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with two coats of Resene Alumastic. This system will give the best chance of reducing the rate of corrosion, but we can’t say for how long.

July 2017

Q. I want to sand back and paint my old wooden doll’s cot and highchair, and would like to know what paint would be suitable and safe, as it will be for my infant daughter.

A. After sanding, apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Leave the paint to cure for two weeks in a warm, well ventilated area, and then wipe down the painted surfaces with water and a cloth then place back into service. Both paints are Resene Environmental Choice approved paints.

July 2017

Q. I have the job of painting a new three storey lift shaft in a residential house. It is lined with new plasterboard and is to be plastered. The lift floor rubs against the wall with brushes on the edges. I am looking for a low sheen paint system to paint it with.

A. A standard Resene system of Resene Broadwall Wallboard Sealer and two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen would be our normal system for the walls but the paint would not remain unaffected by the constant abrasion from the brushes. We’re not aware of any paint system that would, however the amount the paint will be affected depends upon brush type and pressure exerted by the brushes.

July 2017

Q. How do I paint a wood shiplap wall that has varnish on it? I wish to paint it white.

A. Scrub down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions and allow to dry then apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (this only needs to be a thin coat and will not achieve opacity over the varnish colour). Allow to cure for 48 hours then undercoat with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen (walls) or Resene SpaceCote Flat (ceilings). The paint system will take at least five days to develop adhesion and harden; full cure requires a month. The painted surface will not necessarily have the hardness properties of the original varnished surfaces.

July 2017

Q. We have a house on the Sunshine Coast QLD which we want to paint black on certain feature panels, some of which are west facing. Which is the best paint to use for heat and solar fading resistance? Would the CoolColour black reduce fading?

A. A black colour made entirely on a single black pigment has little fading and the same for surface chalking. We assess CoolColour™s using TSR, Total Solar Reflectance. The TSR of standard Resene Black measured for 2 coats applied over a white basecoat is 5.4%; for the CoolColour system TSR increases to 25.2%. TSR is a measure of refection of near infra-red radiation. CoolColours are not cool to touch but have a higher heat reflectance value than the non-cool version of the same colour.

For dark colours the system is two coats of CoolColour™ topcoat applied over a white basecoat. There is still a CoolColour benefit if the white basecoat is omitted but its presence does give the maximum CoolColour benefit.

Q. I am looking to repaint some bare weatherboards but there are a few knots and sap. What's the procedure to take care of this?

A. We recommend Resene Aluminium Wood Primer. Please note that the dry time of this primer is much longer than Resene Wood Primer.

July 2017

Q. I have heard you can wipe an oil based primer applied in less than perfect weather with turps to remove the oily layer so the topcoat sticks better. Is this correct?

A. It is an old painters' trick to remove any oily material from the primer. Under marginal conditions oil based primers can cure with an oily surface layer and this is can cause cissing of waterborne topcoats. Wiping with turps is the way to remove the oily material to overcome cissing when topcoating with a product such as Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat.

We recommend Resene Thinner No.2 as it is lower odour and a safer alternative to turps.

Q. Is there a problem using enamel paint on primed aluminium in winter?

A. The dry times of both solvent and waterborne paints over a cold metal substrate will both be extended. The real issue for exterior painting is the danger of condensation occurring due to dew point conditions.

Q. I need to cover old epoxy coating in carpark/walkway which is sound, no peeling and also porous. Can I apply Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path over the top with a primer coat as it needs to be anti-slip?

A. Degrease then thoroughly sand, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat, then the two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

Q. Do l use water or oil polyurethane on interior rimu sills and doors?

A. For dry areas you can use either but I would stay with the traditional solventborne varnishes for wet areas such as bathrooms.

Q. We want to repaint the outside of our house a charcoal or near black colour. However the wood is pine and I worry that black would heat the wood too much and cause warping. The existing colour is Resene Woodsman Evergreen (I think). Will a solid paint that reflects sun light be better such as Resene CoolColours Blackjack? But how would that look on this type of timber and what undercoat would we need to use?

A. Painting out a house that has previously been stained can sometimes present issues with adhesion of the new paint coating over the existing stain. Using the CoolColour™ system you'd need to apply a white basecoat first then likely apply three topcoats to achieve coverage over. While painting out is an option re-staining would be much more simple for you and cost effective.

If you'd like to stay with the stained look then Resene Waterborne Woodsman CoolColour could be a great option. You'll get the benefit of a simple restain (two coats) plus the benefits of Resene CoolColour reducing the amount of Infrared heat transferred through the coating.

Q. Can I put a waterborne stain over a solventborne stain on exterior woodwork?

A. If both are Resene Woodsman stains, then yes, the existing stain will need to have weathered for two years before recoating with the waterborne version.

Q. I am painting a brick fireplace in our bedroom and have primed the brickwork. I want to finish it with the same colour I am doing the walls, which is Resene Black White. I have a 10L tub of Resene Zylone Sheen for the walls. Can I also use this on the primed bricks?

A. If the fire is not being used then a definite yes. If the fire is being used then probably no, as Resene Zylone Sheen is a conventional waterborne paint and would not handle warm-hot surfaces without softening.

Q. I want to paint an old weathered concrete floor, in a bach built around 1930. It has never been painted, but is unlikely to be insulated. How do I do this, and what products should I use?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal then two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo.

July 2017

Q. I need to paint my baby's cot. What product is safe to use - given the baby will chew on it when it is teething? The coat is an oak IKEA one, with a clear stain.

A. I assume by clear stain you mean varnish over a stain. Thoroughly sand the existing paint/clear system and then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Both products are Environmental Choice Approved. Leave the painted cot to cure for a couple of weeks, and then wipe down with a cloth and warm water before placing into service.

Q. I have a new outdoor pergola, constructed from laminated timber. Is it OK to use something like Wood-X wood oil, or does it need to be painted?

A. Yes there is an issue though - oils or stains need to penetrate and laminated timber is ‘closed’ with regards to cell penetration compared to that of say, band sawn timber with open cells such as cedar.

For laminated timber, the oils or stains don’t penetrate very well. It is better to paint or accept that a regular maintenance of the oil or stain will be required.

Q. We have a pre-painted Skyline (painted galvanised) garage which has been tagged. What would you recommend to repaint?

A. As long as the COLORSTEEL® has been weathered for at least a month. Any Resene exterior waterborne paint can be used to repaint. We do have colour matches to all COLORSTEEL® colours. If you just want to spot paint over tagging. The best product would be Resene Summit Roof.

Q. I am going to paint our hallway, with a warm creamy white. I have grey coloured undercoat paint already. Will the grey affect the topcoat's final colour? I am painting plasterboard.

A. Possibly the opacity achieved by application of two coats of the paler topcoat colour will depend upon the grey base colour and what the topcoat colour is. Some pale topcoat colours do present an opacity issue and require a special tinted basecoat colour to achieve opacity in two coats.

Q. I asked for oil based enamel paint to paint my bathroom. I need oil based as I am repainting an area that was painted in oil based paint. I said with it being a wet area, I need to be able to wipe the walls down. She asked what finish I was after, to which I replied "Not super glossy". She very decisively suggested - low sheen. I thought that meant semi-gloss - which would have seemed the sensible choice.

I have now painted one coat and left it to dry overnight and realise low sheen is too flat. It feels like it will be a surface that dampness will stick to - not smooth.

My question is, how will this paint perform in a small bathroom/ laundry? Should I have been recommended semi-gloss? And if so, how do I fix it? I'm painting this area because it was starting to show signs of cracking and lifting.

A. Paints, solvent or waterborne are not permeable to liquid water. Until recently, oil based (solventborne) paints were the only paint type that could be used for wet areas such as bathrooms. However, this has now changed with the development of waterborne enamel paints.

If the product you purchased was Resene Room Velvet, then it will be perfectly suitable as the topcoat system for a wet area.

Q. We have 20 litres of Resene X-200 that is mistinted (our fault). Is this paint suitable for other surfaces (unpainted roofing iron, timber, cement sheeting,) for example or is it only suitable for masonry?

A. Of the substrates listed I would only recommend Resene X-200 is applied to fibre cement that has been primed with Resene Concrete Primer.

July 2017

Q. I have timber varnished doors in the hall that I have painted over with Resene waterborne enamel. Can I paint over the existing surface with Resene Lusta-Glo enamel having cleaned and lightly sanded to get a more durable finish? Or must the paint be stripped and an undercoat applied?

A. After cleaning down and sanding I recommend a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat be applied before the solvent borne enamels top coats are applied. Leave the Resene Quick Dry to dry for 24 hours before applying the Resene Lusta-Glo.

Resene Zylone Sheen is formulated on a conventional waterborne resin and if this is the paint then Resene Quick Dry is a must.
