Always make sure you read the product label and data sheet prior to application. If in doubt about any aspect of your project, please ask our Paint Expert for help or come in and see our staff at your local Resene ColorShop or Reseller.
Q. I have a 1980s Lockwood-style Signature home. The varnished wood has oranged with age. What product could I use on this if I want to blonde/lighten/whitewash the wood? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. Sand to degloss the existing varnish surface. Apply an even wet coat of Resene Colorwood Whitewash and follow with a coat of Resene Aquaclear varnish. If you want to increase the level of whiteness add a pottle of Resene Colorwood Enhance White to the Resene Aquaclear coat. Application of the Colorwood Whitewash must be done to avoid overlaps along a section as the overlap will show up as a whiter area. December 2019 |
Q. Can you tell me how the colour is affected if the incorrect base tone is used? For example if a colour is meant to have a light tone base but it is mixed using a mid-tone base. How does it affect the colour? A. There are two main issues – the colour will not match the colour standard and the durability may be compromised if colour levels in the tinted colour exceed allowable levels. December 2019 |
Q. I have a deck surrounding my house which we have stained over the years but it always needs redoing due to high traffic and we have very hot summer weather and cold, sometimes snow in winter. I was wanting to paint the deck for a longer finish but have been told by friends that it will be slippery in winter. I thought about sprinkling sand into the paint mix but worry this will have a sandpaper effect if one of the kids fall over. Is there a product that is best suited or am I best to keep staining? A. Any paint that contains an aggregate to give wet slip resistance will always have a potential to be abrasive. From what you say I would stay with staining. December 2019 |
Q. What would be the best alkyd paint for a new CCA H5 timber post that needs to be very well protected from moisture ingress? A. Apply a primer coat of Resene Wood Primer followed by a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. December 2019 |
Q. Is there one type of paint suitable for use on both the interior and exterior of a front door? A. Resene Lustacryl applied over a suitable priming system can be used as the topcoat for both interior and exterior door facings. December 2019 |
Q. I have lined a sleep out with good quality plywood. I would like advice on a clear varnish/polyurethane, sealer etc to use. A. Resene Aquaclear (three coats) would be our recommendation for internal plywood. December 2019 |
Q. I need a specification for an internal finish for a Nelson Pine LVL structure. The building is an oyster hatchery so has internal saltwater in the air. A. We recommend four coats of Resene Polythane for internal LVL. We recommend this system for LVL used in internal swimming pool complexes. December 2019 |
Q. I want to paint my new zinc coated garden shed. Is this possible? What primer/undercoat/topcoat will I need to use? A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions, apply a primer coat of Resene Galvo Prime and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. December 2019 |
Q. I have my bathroom ceiling paint peeling off. I need an undercoat and paint to replace it. A. You will have to strip the existing paintwork back to sound then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal, a coat of Resene Quick Dry and two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. December 2019 |
Q. What paint should I use to repaint a metal letterbox opening and door set within brickwork? The existing paint has been removed so it is mostly bare weathered metal. A. Assuming no corrosion is present apply a full coat of Resene GP Metal Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in your chosen colour. December 2019 |
Q. I wish to clean body sweat/oils/dirt off my rimu table and chairs ready for refinishing. What do I need to use to remove this? A. Our best suggestion would be Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover. December 2019 |
Q. We currently have planted boxes that we have made and coated black with exterior paint. We want coloured exterior paint for our kids to draw on them. What do you recommend? A. Resene FX Blackboard Paint would be our only suggestion. December 2019 |
Q. I have used Resene SpaceCote Flat waterborne flat enamel paint to paint some speakers. Can I overcoat with a solvent based polyurethane once cured? A. We do not recommend application of a solventborne varnish clear over this product. However we do have Resene SpaceCote Clear which can be applied to protect the pigmented coat from contact damage. December 2019 |
Q. I am looking for a sealant to use on painted terracotta pots. Is the Resene Terracotta Sealer recommended for this purpose or Resene Clearcoat UVS? A. Resene Terracotta Sealer is recommended as the first coat on the interior and exterior to control water movement – i.e. so the water doesn’t go through the pot. Resene Clearcoat UVS is used as the final coat to give extended durability and colour fade resistance to the waterborne topcoats. December 2019 |
Q. I have an old villa and the paint is wearing off the front wooden veranda. Please advise the best way to undercoat and paint. A. If mould/algae is present then treat these areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions, then follow with a scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash again diluted and used to label instructions. Sand areas of failing/worn paint back to a sound featured edge and spot prime bare timber with Resene Wood Primer and then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. December 2019 |
Q. We have Tasmanian Oak cabinetry in our 30 year old house. I would like to lighten the colour reduce the yellow/gold colour, which stain shall I use? A. Our recommendation would be Resene Colorwood Rock Salt. If the cabinetry is varnished you will have to sand it back to bare timber before staining. December 2019 |
Q. I am looking for a coating for a concrete floor. The floor will be in a shed where there will be the odd vehicle movement and is used for brewing. I am trying to decide between a polished floor and Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring. For the Resene product. A. The only system we have for this application is Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring. Check using the water splash test for the presence of a curing membrane, water splashed onto the concrete should immediately darken the concrete and be absorbed. If the water is not immediately absorbed and the wet concrete does not darkens then this indicates the presence of a curing membrane. If the splash test indicates the presence of a curing membrane then diamond grind to remove the existing curing membrane and to achieve a uniform surface profile similar to 180 grit sandpaper. Ensure all grinding dust is removed, this may require wet mopping. December 2019 |
Q. I have a pillar of bricks (previously unpainted) in my living room which I wish to paint with Resene Lustacryl to match my walls. Could you please advise me which undercoat/s or sealer/s I need to apply before painting? The bricks are unglazed and are not part of a fire surround. A. Apply a coat of Resene Concrete Primer thinned 10% with water as the seal coat then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. December 2019 |
Q. I was just wondering if Resene Lumbersider was self-priming as one of my friends has said it was and if so is it ok to paint a bit of semi exposed block work? A. Resene Lumbersider can be self-priming to new timber. The adhesion/performance will reduce if applied to weathered timber. For this reason we would always say that priming with the appropriate wood primer is the only way to maximise coating performance. Our environment also presents a challenge to self-priming paints. There are many self-priming paints available that are designed for some surfaces but they need a separate primer on other surfaces. December 2019 |
Q. What should I paint the exterior of my aluminium skin caravan with? A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions. Then apply two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 followed by two coats of Resene Uracryl 403. Resene Uracryl 403 can be substituted with Resene Uracryl 402 or Resene 404 if a reduced gloss level finish is required. December 2019 |
Q. I have a house with dated and faded peach powdercoated aluminium window frames. Do you have a suitable paint system for me to repaint them Arctic White - to match some other new doors and windows we are installing? A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label. Apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Etch white and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. December 2019 |
Q. Is humidity of concern when using waterbased low sheen exterior paint? I'm painting gutters and downpipes on my home. A. There are three environmental factors that determine the dry rate of a waterborne paint – temperature, humidity and air flow. Under very humid conditions release of water from the wet paint film is slow and this can lead to a slower dry rate. December 2019 |
Q. I am lining the walls of a room with ply on black batons to allow for a 7mm negative detail between the ply sheets which are 9mm thick. I want to use Resene Colorwood natural wood stain on the ply once it is installed but I am concerned I will get stain on the black painted batons when I do the edges of the ply and that this may have some negative impact on the finish I am after. Will getting stain on the black painted batons have an effect or will the stain wipe off the painted surface without any impact on the finish? A. The only way to avoid any issues would be to stain the ply sheets before installation. December 2019 |
Q. I have a workbench with a new mdf benchtop. What finish could I apply to give good durability? My first thought is moisture cured polyurethane. A. I agree with your selection of Resene Polythane. If you are after a clear system, apply four coats. December 2019 |
Q. We have a colour that we think looks different to the colour chart. How can we be sure they are the same? A. Our testpots and colour charts are matched to the same colour standards and our Colour Lab team use very precise measures to make sure they match. Our colour charts are made using the same paint that you would use on your walls. However if you are using a much higher gloss paint, the higher gloss level can make it seem cleaner and brighter, and a lower gloss level can make it seem darker. Also sometimes more of a colour or the other things in a home and the lighting can reflect onto the colour and change how you see it. If the colour is very different to the testpot/colour chart, it may be that it has been mistinted, which means the wrong quantities of tinter may have been put into the can. The paint could be brought back to the shop you purchased it from for them to check to see if it is a good match to the chart or whether there was an issue with the tinting. December 2019 |
Q. What are VOCs and why are they harmful, particularly to people with allergies? How do we reduce exposure to them? A. VOCs, short for Volatile Organic Compounds, are chemicals that are used to produce a range of products. In the case of paint, they are released as the paint cures. Once the paint is fully cured then it stops releasing any VOCs. Most waterborne paints are very low in VOCs and some are VOC Free. Traditional solventborne enamels are high in VOC. Low VOC waterborne paints generally have 80-90% less VOCs than traditional solventborne products. As the market moves more and more towards using waterborne paints, the VOCs we are exposed to through paint decreases. Changing from a solventborne product to a waterborne product can immediately reduce the VOC level by 80-90% for many products. Indoor air quality is important. Not only do you want to minimise the fumes while painting, but you also want the paint odour to disappear quickly so the area can be put into service faster without putting the occupants at risk. Improving indoor air quality can also help prevent headaches, asthma, nausea, dizziness, respiratory complaints, allergic reactions and improve general well-being and provide a better working environment for the professional or amateur painter. For most people, using waterborne paints that are low VOC with good ventilation is easy to do. Most issues are caused by traditional solventborne paints with high VOCs being used in enclosed areas, with insufficient ventilation. Some of the key ingredients in paint are also used in other common household items, such as cleaning products. Without realising it some people can become sensitised to specific ingredients in products they use regularly, and this may flare up when exposed to more of the same substance. Many common household products contain VOCs, such as hairsprays, deodorants and normal household cleaning products. Most people will have only minimal exposure to VOCs from paint, but much greater exposure to VOCs through the other products they use. Take care when shopping to choose low VOC products. Q. Are ‘natural paints’ a safe choice? A. Any hydrocarbon solvent, whether from natural vegetable sources or from fossil fuel sources, has a degree of toxicity. Solvents, such as turpentine, are produced by plants to kill attacking insects – they are not benign materials. The only (virtually) non-toxic solvents are synthetically designed and produced. On their own, natural oils are very poor binders for paints without being significantly and synthetically modified. The most useful (and popular) of them, linseed oil, is very slow to dry, produces a ‘weak’ initial film, provides an ideal nutrient for moulds and fungi, yellows and, as it ages, oxidises to produce a very, very brittle film. Of course many natural things are good for you but severe allergic reactions to such natural things as gluten, lactose and peanuts can be very dangerous. Add to that list deadly nightshade, curare, snake venom, etc and one can see that many ‘natural materials’ need to be treated with caution. There exists within New Zealand an eco-labelling programme run by Environmental Choice. Via this programme, independent third parties make the judgement on the relative safety of paints. They also test for the ‘fitness for purpose’ of the product measured against international standards. This is a good way to check your paint meets the standards. December 2019 |
Q. Please give me some tips for sprucing up rooms before staging ready for sale. A. A fresh paint job can modernise a room and help it feel newer and higher quality. Aim to use a low sheen finish, such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, on walls, a semi-gloss finish, such as Resene Lustacryl, on trim, joinery and doors and a flat finish, such as Resene Ceiling Paint, on ceilings. The semi-gloss finish on doors will make it easier to wipe away fingerprint marks and keep the doors in good condition. There are many off-white options, each with different undertones, which can be hard to see in isolation. Resene ColorShops have A4 painted swatches of Resene colours in their in store Colour Library so you can view each colour in a larger size. Slip a piece of white photocopy paper under off-white samples to see the undertones. Colours in an interior tend to look much darker and intense than you may expect. If in double choose a lighter option. The same colour on a ceiling and a wall will look different. The colour on the ceiling will look darker because there is no light falling on it. If you want to achieve a similar colour look throughout the space use a half version of the wall colour for the ceiling. If you want the ceiling to look lighter, use a quarter variant or opt for a colour such as Resene Alabaster or Resene White. The ‘right’ neutral is the colour that relates best to the greatest number of other elements but can still be used as a standalone colour without appearing bland. Old built in furniture or furniture that comes as part of a rental package can be easily spruced up with paint. On smooth surfaces coat first with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer before topcoating. Stained timber furniture and features can be sanded and then rejuvenated with tinted Resene Colorwood wood stain and Resene Aquaclear. When you’re choosing colours for a room refresh, first choose elements such as carpet, laminate, cabinetry etc first as there are fewer choices available. Then choose your paint colour. It’s easier to find a paint colour to match these items. Current popular neutrals are those that tend towards black and grey undertones – try Resene Alabaster, Resene Black White and Resene Sea Fog. For a warmer feel try Resene Quarter Spanish White. December 2019 |
Q. I have promised my kids I will paint their room and want to do something different but don’t know where to start. Please help. A. When you’re decorating children’s rooms, there are lots of decisions to make. Does the room need to have the same colour palette as the rest of the house or are you happy for this room to reflect your child’s personality? Who is going to choose the colour – your child, you or are you going to choose it together? If you decide you want the colour palette to fit with the rest of your home but still want your child’s personality to shine through, one option is to keep all the room colours the same as your home’s main colour palette, but add a feature wall in your child’s favourite colour. If you are clever with the placement of the feature wall your child can enjoy it while they are in the room, but it won’t be seen from a hallway if you are walking past. Another option is to bring their personality into other elements in the room – upcycle furniture by painting it in their favourite Resene colours. Paint the inside of their wardrobe or the back of the wardrobe doors for them to enjoy. Use Resene testpots to paint photo and art frames and decorate ornaments. When it comes to choosing the colour it’s always good to let your child have some say in the colour decision. Either give them a Resene KidzColour colour chart and let them point out their favourites and then you can decide where they will work, or else pre-select a range of colours you could live with and let them choose from those. If you’re keen to avoid an all pink or blue, lime is a popular option for boys and girls and can be teamed with purple for a more girly look. Orange is also a popular alternative to pink and blue. If your child is already high energy, you might want to consider softer tones to help them relax. As well as the walls, think about the floor and ceiling. For a space mad child you would paint the ceiling in a dark blue and add glow in the dark stars with Resene FX Nightlight. Or for a soothing look, opt for a light blue and sponge on clouds in white. Expand your child’s playing space onto their walls with a blackboard or whiteboard they can write on (using Resene FX Blackboard Paint or Resene FX Write-on Wall Paint) or create a magnetic wall with Resene FX Magnetic Magic. With a magnetic wall you can then create scenes using magnets that your child can play with. As well as hours of fun, they can also enjoy a whole new look each time they move their magnets around. Some parents create works of art on their walls. If you have an artistic streak, go for it. If you’re less artistically minded, but like the idea of something a little different, consider a colour blocked effect. Simply select a small number of favourite Resene colours, choose a shape, e.g. triangles or similar, and create a geometric pattern on the wall using low tack masking tape. Paint different masking off areas in different colours, then peel off the tape. If your child can’t decide on one favourite, you can incorporate many favourites into one wall. The colour blocks can be any shape you like. While geometric shapes are normally the easiest, if your child loves a particular hobby you could use a shape from that hobby as inspiration for your wall. See the Habitat plus – kids’ spaces booklet for more ideas. December 2019 |
Q. What does VOC stand for and what does it mean? A, VOC = Volatile Organic Compound, which are released during the paint application and drying phase. They are in many products – such as hair spray, cleaning products and paints. Solventborne paints have traditionally had VOC levels of 500 gms/L or more. Waterborne paints tend to have VOC levels of 100 gms/L or less and some have much lower levels, like Resene Zylone Sheen VOC Free and Resene Non VOC tinters. Usually the higher the solvent level in the paint the higher the VOCs. To minimise VOCs choose a waterborne paint or option where possible. For some projects, you may need to use a solventborne product for the best result, so make sure you have the area well ventilated and well any protective clothing recommended on the pack. High VOCs means more material is being released. VOCs can cause headaches and allergic reactions. So the lower the VOC the better. You can mitigate the effects of VOC with good ventilation and protective gear. Once the paint is fully cured (normally three weeks) then no further VOCs are emitted. So it is a very temporary issue. Compared to other things we come into contact with – hairsprays, petrol etc – the VOCs in paint are a very tiny part of the VOCs we would be exposed to. December 2019 |
Q. How important is the quality of the painter or wallpaperer to the finish? A. When it comes to painters and wallpaperers, you tend to get what you pay for. Professionals usually achieve a better quality job, with less hassle and disruption for you, using better quality materials. All of this adds up to a better finish, less stress to free you up to focus on other things. If you think it’s expensive hiring a good painter, try hiring a bad one. A poor quality painter and materials tends to result in more coats, more callbacks and lost time, all of which will cost you time and money. December 2019 |
Q. I have heard you can use cola to wipe chalk off a blackboard paint surface. Is that true? A. In theory yes this can work BUT you would need to rinse it (so wipe clean with clean water after you had put the cola on) or it could end up pretty sticky otherwise. Vinegar could do a similar job, but again would need to be rinsed clean (so wiped with a clean damp cloth to remove any residues). Generally though all you need is a damp soft cloth to wipe off the chalk, without the risk of any stickiness. December 2019 |
Q. I am building a deer shed with timber ply walls, a concrete floor and some metal. What do I need to do to coat the interior? A. Clean all surfaces (timber, concrete and metal) thoroughly with Resene Heavy Duty Paint and Prep and Oil Remover. Clean timber ply (as above) then apply 3-4 coats Resene Polythane envelope sealed (on all edges). For the concrete floor, clean (as above), diamond grind, then apply one coat Resene ArmourBond and two coats of Resene Aquapoxy. For the metal, clean (as above) then prepare with 3M disc. Apply three coats of Resene Armourcote 221 and two coats Uracryl 403. December 2019 |
Q. I am planning to stain my deck and haven’t done it before. Do you have some quick tips of things I should/shouldn’t do to prep it ready for staining? Do
Don’t
December 2019 |
Q. We have replaced the metal corners on our weatherboard house with stainless steel ones as we live at the beach. What do we use as a primer on the stainless steel before applying the house paint? A. Wash the soakers down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions then apply a coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat. December 2019 |
Q. My two year old oil stained cedar is fading and dirty black. Please advise remedy. A. The black areas are mould growth, treat using Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions, then apply two coats of Resene Woodsman wood oil stain. If the existing stain is a mineral oil based stain then you would need to use a mineral oil based stain for restaining. December 2019 |
Q. I have bought some zinc strips which I'm wanting to paint the same colour as my house. Do I need to prime it with something first? A. Yes prime the zinc strips with Resene Galvo One before topcoating with a Resene exterior waterborne coating. December 2019 |
Q. I am proposing to use Resene Alumastic high build epoxy on patches of surface rust on my galvanised corrugated iron roof, probably a total area of less than 2%. I will use an angle grinder with wire brush to remove as much as possible and then apply two coats of Resene Alumastic with a brush. Can you tell me how best to clean before application? I could use a dry rag, otherwise Resene Roof and Metal Wash, which will mean wetting the bare metal surface. A. The key requirements for preparing a corroded surface for painting is to remove salts and loose corrosion products. Salts can be removed by washing down using Resene Roof & Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions. We now prefer to use a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc (drill fitted) for removing loose corrosion deposits, unlike a wire brush the 3M disc does not scratch the surface and is very effective at leaving only tightly adherent corrosion products on the surface. Resene Alumastic is a barrier coating so ensure you apply a thick coating for each coat. December 2019 |
Q. I have a rental flat. How can I make a positive difference to the flooring, without spending a fortune? A. If you have timber flooring that isn’t in the best condition (e.g. natural timber look is past it’s best and it’s unlikely you could get it looking really good again) then you could opt to paint the floor with Resene Walk-on. This is especially good for entrance type areas inside and out. We have many customers now painting floorings, often a white or light colour, which also helps to reflect more light into dark spaces. For a concrete floor, you can maintain it using Resene Concrete Wax – if you regularly maintain it, it means the coating takes all the wear and tear rather than the floor. You can also opt to stain timber floors with products such as Resene Qristal ClearFloor. While we also have heavier duty polyurethanes, they can tend to leave a strong solvent odour, so we recommend opting for Resene Qristal ClearFloor which will give a durable clear finish on timber without the unwanted solvent odours. If flooring timber is looking faded but is in otherwise good condition, you could consider a whitewash finish such as Resene Colorwood Whitewash or you could rejuvenate the timber colour with Resene Colorwood wood stain and then finish in the Resene Qristal ClearFloor. Another quick and easy option which suits some homes are cork file tiles which can be purchased natural and then stained with Resene Colorwood also, then clear finished. December 2019 |
Q. I need some quick ways to improve my home for resale but I don’t have the time or money to do a full exterior repaint. What do you recommend for some quick improvements? A. The key is to make a good first impression so people aren’t turned off when they drive by for a look or before they get in the front door.
December 2019 |
Q. I have had a confusing situation with your Resene Lumbersider paint. I went into buy this paint to recoat an existing deck and was told that I need to first apply an undercoat. Another store said it could be applied direct. Which is correct? A. Resene Quick Dry is often recommended if there is an unknown waterborne paint to which Resene Lumbersider will be applied. If there is bare timber then Resene Quick Dry is recommended to prime these areas. While Resene Lumbersider can be applied direct to sound timber, application of a dedicated wood primer will give the most robust finish. December 2019 |
Q. Which product would you recommend for restoring a two square metre rimu dining table? I want a clear hard finish that I can wipe down spills. I have damaged the existing top surface coating with diffuser oil. I am quite happy to sand back to bare timber. A. You will definitely need to remove the diffuser oil which may have penetrated into the base wood. Then undertake sanding to remove the existing coating. For the hardest wearing finish apply 3-4 coats of Resene Polythane. December 2019 |
Q. Please advise a suitable concrete sealer for a new driveway with a 3% black oxide added. A. The only clear product we have for this is Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear Wet Look. December 2019 |
Q. We are installing plywood shelves in a pantry. What would you suggest I paint them with and will it damage easily loading and unloading the shelves? A. The simplest paint system would be two coats of Resene Quick Dry followed with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. December 2019 |
Q. I am preparing to repaint carpark markings and I wish to do a thorough clean before doing so. Which Resene product will clean adequately without marking the tar-seal surface? A. We recommend Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover. December 2019 |
Q. We need to paint external stairs (H3 pine). What do you recommend? A. If new apply a full primer coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. December 2019 |
Q. I'm interested in whether your anti-slip paint would be suitable on a timber boardwalk deck in an estuary environment. A. Yes, apply a full coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. December 2019 |
Q. What paint can I use to paint PVC rattan outdoor furniture? A. You can use Resene Lumbersider to paint exterior PVC. December 2019 |
Q. Fly spray leaked onto a wall coated with Resene Zylone Sheen. We tried to clean it up with detergent and recoat with Resene Quick Dry. The surface is still slightly tacky. Should I put on a sealer coat? A. The issue is that the solvents used in the spray has plasticised (permanently softened) the wall paint. We recommend you apply a coat of Resene Sureseal, allow to dry overnight then apply a coat of Resene StainLock over the Resene Sureseal then re topcoat. You will find that the area affected will be extend beyond the initial contact site. This has been successful for others but it depends upon how much spray has been deposited onto the surface. December 2019 |
Q. Is it possible to paint slate tiles and if so what is the protocol and product to be used? We would like a coloured finish. A. Yes but if the slate surface is textured there can be wear on the higher points. Ensure the slate is clean and free from grease/oil. We recommend applying Resene Concrete Clear Gloss and finish with two coats of Lustacryl for a coloured finish. December 2019 |
Q. We have had a fire in a Totalspan metal garage. It is still structurally sound. Internally there is a lot of smoke coating to galvanised steel from the burnt internal building paper. What is the best Resene primer to seal and prevent future corrosion and odour? Needs to be compatible with airless sprayer. A. We have no primer that will prevent corrosion and block smoke odours. While there are products that claim to achieve odour blocking, customers have reported they often do not achieve a total block, in addition they are not anti-corrosive. Our recommendation for dealing with a smoke damaged surface is to apply Resene Emulsifiable Solvent Cleaner and scrub then thoroughly wash down using fresh water. This will remove the majority of the stains that may be solubilised when overcoated and also odour causing materials. Then apply a full coat of Resene GP Metal Primer. December 2019 |
Q. What do you recommend to paint over a COLORSTEEL garage and walls? A. Wash down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover diluted and used to label instructions. Apply a full coat of Resene Pre-Coated Steel Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. December 2019 |
Q. Do you make testpots in gloss finishes? A. Most of our testpots are in a low sheen finish as that is the most popular finish for most projects inside and out. If you do want a gloss finish, we do sell small containers of Resene Art Action glaze which includes a gloss option. This can be applied over the normal testpot colour to change it from a low sheen to a gloss. December 2019 |
Q. I recently bought a house built in the 1950s. It has several layers of paint on the exterior and is completely redone in the interior. It wasn't until after I bought it, and did some more research that the dangers of lead paint came up (the builder’s report never mentioned a thing). I am wondering the best way to determine how bad the paint is? The interior is fine, in terms of everything is sealed or redone (so I would say low chance of toxic paint. The exterior has been painted over but there is some flaking around the windows and soffits. I have had one painter come and look and he said he doesn't do lead paint jobs with wet sanders etc only the old fashioned way. I really love the house and location. But the fear of a toxic house full of lead is scaring me somewhat (after reading and googling on the internet). Also, is old red concrete paint likely to have lead paint? Could you advise the best process for sorting it all out? A. Given the age of your property and assuming that the paint older paint system has never been stripped than it is more than likely that lead will be present especially in the older paint layers. It is generally accepted that lead-based paint does not present a health hazard as long as the paint is not chipping, flaking, crushed or sanded into dust. High levels of exposure to lead may cause lead poisoning and other issues such as anaemia and impaired brain and nervous system functions. To follow is a link which gives information of the safe removal of a lead based paint system. We can test for the presence of lead in paint system but the test does not quantify how much lead is present only that there is lead in the paint system. There are painting businesses that will undergo removal of a paint system, containing lead, if you do find one make sure that they undertake the removal in accordance with all OSH Guidelines as you have already encountered there are some that dismiss the dangers of lead based paint removal. However be duly warned that a total strip will not come cheaply. Difficult to say if a paint contains lead unless the test is undertaken. December 2019 |
Q. We are looking at painting the outside of our house and have got some spots of paint flaking. When we use a pressure washer to remove the dirt the paint on the outside of the house looks and feels ok. Just where the paint has lifted the paint under the topcoat is chalking and when rubbed by hand has lots of chalking. Do we need to remove all the topcoat of paint and clean the chalking off the original paint under the topcoat or clean where the paint is peeling back to original and remove the chalking then paint with a sealer or binder? A. You will need to remove the topcoats to expose the layer showing chalking then prepare the chalked surface by washing down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash or sanding to produce a sound chalk free surface for repainting. Given that there is currently poor topcoat adhesion application over the existing topcoat will place more stress on the weakly adherent topcoat and further peeling/flaking will be seen. December 2019 |
Q. We have a solid Rimu table top at present coated with Danish oil. What is a good varnish type coating that will wear hard and bring out the best in the Rimu top? A. As long as the oil has hard dried, clean down and light sand to profile for recoating with the Qristal clear varnish. December 2019 |
Q. Which products can I use to clean and paint my house's corrugated aluminium roof? There is very little of the original paint left so it's mostly bare metal. A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash to label instructions. You could then water blast to remove any reaming loose paint. Then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. December 2019 |
Q. The painters water blasted the old paint off the weatherboards, now we've got flakes of paint everywhere! What's the best way to pickup thousands of bits of old paint? A. A leaf sucker may be the only way. If you are going to undertake more water blasting (water blasting of timber cladding must be done carefully to avoid damaging the timber surface, buy a few rolls of cheap weed matt and peg this out on the ground below the area to be cleaned. This makes retrieval of paint flakes a much easier task. December 2019 |
Q. We live in sight of the sea (though not directly beachfront). Do you have a recommendations about durability between your Resene Hi-Glo and Resene Summit roof paints in these circumstances? I quite like the look of your Summit metallic range (most likely the aluminium colour). Would that change your recommendations about durability? A. It is essential to remove surface salt by washing down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash following label instructions. Prepare areas of flaking paint back to a sound edge using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc. Spot prime these areas with two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer in preparation for topcoating. Re topcoating, for many years Resene Hi-Glo was marketed as a house and roof paint. However the lower gloss level of precoated factory roofing saw customer resistance to a high gloss roof paint finish so we introduced Summit Roof which is our reduced gloss level roof paint. In theory the higher the gloss level the longer the time to the onset of surface chalking, With roofing this is an important consideration and the roof pitches can see a roof elevation receiving at least twice the exposure level compared to a vertical cladding. Given this I would go with Resene Hi-Glo but you must decide on what gloss level best fits your acceptance. December 2019 |
Q. We'd like to change the colour of the exterior bricks on our home but don't want to paint them. Is Resene Concrete Stain suitable for this application? A. Resene Concrete Stain was developed for application to a horizontal surface. While you can apply to a vertical surface it may be difficult to achieve an even colour. The stain is semi-transparent which means that areas of overlap will have a more intense colour. The stain is usually reapplied every third summer to maintain aesthetics on a horizontal surface. On a vertical surface this may extend to 4-5 years. The northern elevation which receives more intense weathering may require maintenance earlier than the other elevations. December 2019 |
Q. We want to know what type of paint we would be able to use in order to repaint over our existing aluminium window frames? A. The surface will typically be dulled with some corrosion present (aluminium oxide AlO2). Anodised and powder coated aluminium will be chalky. A thorough careful clean is required to remove chalked paint and contaminants. There is likely to be mould or moss growth on powder coated surfaces. Step 1: Treat moss and mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer; use as directed on the label. For heavy infestations, an additional application(s) may be needed. Step 2: Scrub down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted to label/data sheet directions. Rinse clean with copious quantities of clean water to remove all oils, grease, dust and any other contaminants. Test surface is degreased by wiping with clean cotton wool. Repeat process if necessary. Step 3: Thoroughly wet sand to remove any areas of corrosion, and to remove aluminium oxide layer and provide a better key for adhesion. Any pitted areas should be wet sanded to a smooth profile. If possible, any sharp edges on the aluminium profile should be rounded off, to allow better coating film build. For window joinery, special care is needed to avoid coating any rubber seals/sealants with any paints specified in this section. If practical, remove the rubber seal (and possibly the window glass) and once painted, replace with new rubber seals. The mitre joint in aluminium windows will be more noticeable the lighter the colour selected. Then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo-Prime and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. December 2019 |
Q. I am replacing the cedar weather boards beneath my kitchen windows (north facing). My builder has suggested that I stain the inside of the boards first. Should I do this? A. Envelope sealing is a sound idea for new weatherboards as this helps to control changes in the moisture level of the timber. December 2019 |
Q. We just started sanding and water blasting some old weatherboards with a view to painting. The house is a 60s weatherboard. Is that the right sort of prep work? We are finding a couple of layers of paint. Any advice as to whether it could be lead-based or how to find out? A. We don’t recommend high pressure water blasting of timber cladding as this can lead to damage of the timber surface. If the paint on the cladding pre dates the 70s then there is a high probability that the older paint will contain lead. We can provide test kits to test the paint to determine if lead is present, best to check the older paint layers. Removal of lead based paint must be done in a manner so as not to releases paint flakes to the environment, also do not dry sand if the point contains lead. If there seems to be a heavy build up paint it may be time to consider a total strip. This can be done using paint strippers or a heat gun (use a gun that the temperature can be maintained at less than 400⁰C) and a tungsten blade scraper ensure that you are wearing protective clothing. Gloves, eye protection and a dust face mask. Ensure all paint flakes are collected when stripping using a heat gun. Lay a couple of widths of weed mat or shade cloth below the area to be stripped as this makes collection of flakes for disposal easier. December 2019 |
Q. Which product do you recommend for priming/sealing GIB® plasterboard which was wallpapered 20 years ago, stripping it now and there is a slight possible residue? A. We recommend Resene Sureseal. December 2019 |
Q. We have a very old concrete water tank (1970ish) that requires painting as the leaks have been sealed. Please advise which primer/sealer would be the best: Resene Concrete Seal 3 in 1 or Resene Concrete Primer. I have painted two tanks but the remaining tank has never had paint on it and I can imagine it will soak up plenty of paint unless sealed/primed. I am using your Resene Lumbersider as the topcoat on the two tanks painted and it has worked very well. A. For the exterior apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint finish. December 2019 |
Q. Large parts of the house exterior still have a sheen but if I gently swipe across the surface it will leave a chalky residue on the finger. Is washing the surface with sugar soap or just water enough at this point? A. We recommend using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions to remove surface chalking, Sugar Soap is mainly used to remove fats and grease not paint chalking. December 2019 |
Q. What prep is necessary to paint over Lockwood interior knotty pine walls? They look shiny as if they have a polyurethane coating but I'm not sure? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. The sections of timber in a Lockwood can undergo a change in dimension with changing conditions, this can result in a line of the original varnish appearing. In the event of thus occurring you will need to repeat the above. December 2019 |
Q. Am I able to stain two different coloured Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stains on top of each other? A. There is no technical reason why you cannot apply two different stain colours of the same stain. However stains are semi-transparent which means the colour you get after the second coat is influenced by the underlying stain colour. December 2019 |
Q. What do I use to get a stained finish on the woodgrained vertical cement cladding of new extension Axon by James Hardie? A. The Resene Forester system is application of a solid base colour followed by two coats of the Resene Forester glaze colour. It will give you the stained timber look. December 2019 |
Q. Just recoated an interior bedroom with the original paint the builder bought but the room smells horrendous. The paint is likely five years old. Should the paint now be removed somehow from the wall? A. If the paint was a waterborne paint it may have become contaminated with bacteria. Try wiping the walls down using a dilute bleach solution and see if this deals with the odour. Take care to avoid splashing the bleach solution onto furnishings. December 2019 |
Q. Is it safe to sleep in a bedroom newly painted with Resene paint? A. If you have used a waterborne paint there is no real issue with sleeping in the room but to be sure allow at least 48 hours with good ventilation to allow for all volatiles to be released and vented. December 2019 |
Q. I have a metal roller garage door – currently painted but with flakes coming off. What is the best way to prep and repaint? A. If the flaking is across the entire door then removal of the paint will be required. You could start by water blasting with a rotating head fitted to the water blaster and see how much paint is removed. Step 1: Treat moss and mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer; use as directed on the label. For heavy infestations, an additional application(s) may be needed. Data Sheet D80. Step 2: Treat lichen with undiluted Resene Moss & Mould Killer; leave for 24 hours before scraping off or mechanically removing. Alternatively, water blasting is effective at removing lichen and other contaminates. Step 3: Apply a liberal wash of Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted to label/data sheet directions. Thoroughly scrub the surface, using a stiff nylon brush or broom. Rinse clean, hose down with fresh water or water blast to ensure complete removal of all grease, moss and mould residue and any other contaminants. Step 4: All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure water blasting, taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Step 5: Where under-film corrosion is taking place, the existing paint must first be removed as per Step 4 and the corrosion products removed, taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish. It is strongly recommended that any badly rusted sections of galvanised steel be replaced. The performance of the subsequent paint systems will be largely dependent on the thoroughness of this surface preparation stage. Immediately spot prime bare areas with the specified primer. Spot prime bare metal with a full coat of Resene GP Metal Primer and then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof. December 2019 |
Q. What type of topcoat paint can I use to paint over a previously painted fibre board cement panel around a pot belly stove? A. As long as you can maintain hand contact on the area to be painted when the fire is at full heat then Resene Lustacryl can be used as the topcoat. December 2019 |
Q. We’ve removed some shelving that was glued to a wall - this has resulted in some of the GIB® plasterboard paper peeling back. We understand we need to seal this with a non-waterborne paint prior to replastering. We have some Resene Wood Primer general purpose solventborne exterior/interior – will this do? We will be plastering over the paint. A. Resene Sureseal is the recommended sealer for this application. December 2019 |
Q. We have used Resene TimberLock on hardwood as there is ongoing deterioration of the waterbased paint on pine framing on our windows. Are we able to use an oil based enamel as the next coat and further coats of oil based enamel? A. Resene TimberLock is not an alternative to a dedicated wood primer. You will need to leave the Resene TimberLock to dry for at least 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer before topcoating. December 2019 |
Q. My concrete brick house (1999) was painted over brick, and I believe the paint was original. We are looking at repainting it and would like to know what the correct product to use is. I am not sure what paint was used previously but believe it is waterbased paint – I used some methylated spirit wipe and some paint came off. A. Wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. Spot prime any bare areas with Resene Concrete Primer and then finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101. December 2019 |
Q. We have a pine barge board at the top of the wall that has knots in it. This has been undercoated then finished with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101, but it looks like sap is bleeding through the coats of paint. What should i do to repair this and stop it happening again? A. Sap bleed is difficult to control. Dark topcoat colours will exacerbate sap bleed due to an increased surface temperature of the painted surface. Our best remedy is to scrape back the areas showing resin bleed using as tungsten blade scraper to remove the resin exudate and expose the bare timber. Feather back the edges and then spot prime with Resene Aluminium Wood Primer. This is a relatively slow drying primer and must be hard dry before overcoating with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101. If the resin pocket in the timber contains high level of resin then a level of resin bleed may still occur. December 2019 |
Q. I am doing up large driveway gates. They are in good condition but have had to replace the TG and V in the middle. They have been oil painted in gloss but I want to topcoat in low sheen acrylic. I have scuff sanded with 120 grit sandpaper. Which acrylic paint for topcoat would be best please? A. You must use a dedicated wood primer such as Resene Wood Primer or Resene Quick Dry for priming bare timber areas. We recommend using a full coat of Resene Quick Dry as an undercoat before topcoating with Resene Lumbersider. If using as dark topcoat colour then we recommend using the CoolColour version of the topcoat colour. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch. If water can get in between the T&G sections then this may cause the paint system to fail at the V section. There is no way to avoid this from happening. December 2019 |
Q. We have just put done a 20mm strand floor (chipboard) floor and probably need to varnish it to protect it. One guy has told us you shouldn't varnish it but their website says you can. A. It depends upon what the floor area will be subject to. If the floor is subject to heavy foot traffic we recommend three coats of Resene Polythane. December 2019 |
Q. I would like to paint over varnished Rimu window sills and architraving. The varnish may be 20 years old or more. What is the best way to do this? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Give the existing clear a sand to profile using 220 grit sandpaper (you do not need to sand to completely remove). Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. December 2019 |
Q. I painted my roof about two years ago. It had rust at the time in patches and I used a rust converter then painted it. Now I have rust spots back again in the same places. What did I do wrong? How do I fix it properly this time so I won't have to keep painting rust every couple of years? A. Unfortunately the term 'rust convertor' does not equate to rust stability. Resene Paints has not introduce such a convertor as we believe that they can have a hit and miss approach despite the branding. If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, diluted and used to label directions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Rinse clean or hose down with fresh water ensuring all salts are also removed. All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure water blasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods e.g. 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc, taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Where under-film corrosion is taking place the existing paint must first be removed as above and remove under film corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish. Note: The performance of the subsequent paint systems will be largely dependent on the thoroughness of this surface preparation stage. Ensure all edges of damaged paint are sound and immediately spot prime all areas of corrosion and any other bare metal with a full coat of the specified primer. Spot prime the prepared bare metal/corroded areas with two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer before applying two coats of Resene Summit Roof. December 2019 |
Q. I want to restore some stained porcelain. I would need a primer for smooth surfaces and acrylic latex paint. A. For a decorative system only the following can be used, note the paint system does not allow for washing in hot detergent solution or in a dishwasher. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. December 2019 |
Q. I am constructing a light fence that will have anodised aluminium posts. It is within three metres of a sea high tide. I want to paint these anodised posts for addition protection. Can you advise the prep and paint system required? A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash to label instructions. Apply an adhesion coat of Resene Vinyl Etch Primer followed by two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 and then finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoat. The paints can be applied by brush or roller. December 2019 |
Q. Which paint could you paint over black rubber paint and is it available in different colours? A. Our only recommendation is to apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer to the rubber surface and then apply two coats of a Resene exterior waterborne paint colour. December 2019 |
Q. I would like to paint my fridge. What primer, paint and sealant would you recommend? A. Ensure the surfaces are degreased using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, paying particular attention to areas of hand contact. Then wet sand using 400 wet and dry sandpaper to de-gloss the existing paint finish. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo or Resene Super Gloss enamel. December 2019 |
Q. I have exterior pressed metal gable ends – which have been painted with Resene Lumbersider - which are a touch rusty. Is there a Resene primer or undercoat I could put on them before I put another coat of Resene Lumbersider on them. They are a bit delicate so I don't want to attack them too much with as wire brush etc. A. Wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label instructions to remove surface salts. You will have to expose the rusted areas using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc to leave only tightly adherent corrosion deposits. Spot prime prepared areas of bare metal with two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer and then apply the Resene Lumbersider topcoats. December 2019 |
Q. Is your Resene Concrete Stain product suitable for painting an interior brick fireplace surround and a pebbled hearth? A. In theory yes with the following restrictions – if hand contact cannot be maintained on the surfaces when the fire is at full heats then we do not recommend staining it. Also if embers fall onto the stained surface it will be damaged. Stain adhesion to bare stone/aggregate is also reduced compared to concrete. December 2019 |
Q. I am preparing some wooden window frames that I painted with Resene water based paint some 12 years ago. I am sanding the old paint back, with an orbital sander instead of feathering back, the old topcoat seems to rise up leaving a ragged edge where i am trying to feather back. How can i prevent this? A. Conventional waterborne paints soften when sanded due to the heat created by the sanding process, the paints do not dust up when sanded but the softened paint can roll up in to balls. Orbital sanders do have the potential to create more heating. The only way around this is to wet sand using wet and dry sandpaper. December 2019 |
Q. We have a new house with timber solid floors in bathrooms – Leyland Cypress treated to H1.2. Which product should we be using to seal the bathroom timber floors? A. We recommend three coats (minimum) of Resene Polythane. December 2019 |
Q. I have candle wax splatters that are on a wall that I want to repaint. I have heard of heating it with a hairdryer and trying to remove it or using an automotive wax and grease remover. What is recommended to remove the wax or should I leave it and seal over it? A. If you heat to soften the candle wax you can remove some but not all of the contamination. Then use a wax and oil remover to remove the residual wax. December 2019 |
Q. I am looking at building a kitchen island in my flat out of untreated plywood. I would need it to be waterproof, but I wouldn't be using knives or anything particularly damaging on it directly. I am hoping I could get some advice on the best way to seal a surface like that, so that it would be suitable for food prep. A. We recommend Resene Polythane. If possible envelop seal with the first coat then apply an additional three coats to the exposed areas. It is critical to ensure the full system is applied to cut edges such as those around a sink placement. December 2019 |
Q. I would like to get some advice regarding painting my decramastic roof? What products would I require? A. Upon weathering the tiles will lose chip texture due to erosion of the bitumen base back to base metal which at the extreme will result in corrosion. This specification will restore colour but not the original chip texture profile. Some mastic and bitumen-based coatings used in the manufacture of pressed roofing tiles prior to the early 1980's may contain asbestos. Certain profiles which are likely to contain asbestos are Decramastic. Arrange for a specialist to take samples and undertake testing to confirm the presence or absence of asbestos OR assume that asbestos is present. If asbestos is present, any work must be carried out in accordance the following documents:
Note 1: If the presence of asbestos is confirmed all surfaces must remain wet whilst being worked on during all preparation steps. Step 1: Spot treat areas of heavy lichen infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted 1:1 with water and leave for 48 hours before proceeding to Step 3. Step 2: Treat areas of moss/lichen infestation at least two weeks prior to the commencement of painting with a saturation coat of Resene Deep Clean diluted and used to label directions. Resene Deep Clean is a slow release bio kill agent. Resene Deep Clean is best applied under overcast conditions to maximise wetting time. Treat heavy infestations with a second application 4 hours after the first application and leave for at least 2 weeks before washing down with water, scrubbing to remove loose detritus (see Note: 1), then rinse with clean water. Step 3: Wash down with water to remove all dirt, grease, moss and mould residue, dust, and other contaminants. WATER BLASTING IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS THIS WILL RESULT IN THE DISLODGEMENT OF CHIP. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. Resene recommend that downpipes are disconnected during this process and that gutters are thoroughly cleaned out before reconnecting downpipes. Place a coarse filter on the exit section of the downpipe to capture chip and debris and then dispose of in accordance with asbestos guidelines. Step 4: All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by wet sanding (see Note: 1) to a sound feathered edge taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Where under-film corrosion is taking place, the existing coating must first be removed as per above and remove corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish. Spot prime prepared areas of corrosion/bare substrate with two coats of Resene Galvo-Prime and then finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. Note this system will not restore the original chip profile. December 2019 |
Q. What sort of paint should I use on an old unpainted galvanised metal roof? There is some surface rust. A. If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions. Prime prepared corroded areas with Resene GP Metal Primer then apply a full coat if Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. December 2019 |
Q. I wish to change the colour on our ribline colour-steel sectional garage door, which is four years old. What would you recommend? A. Wash down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover diluted and used to label instructions. Apply a full coat of Resene Pre-Coated Steel Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. This system is suitable for painting the door facings as long as sections of topcoated faces do not come into contact.
