Q. Can you offer me some advice of how to get dried water based paint out of clothing?

A. It may not be easy if the paint has been on the clothing for some time. Suggest you purchase a spray bottle of Resene Graffiti Cleaner, spray onto the affected areas, rub in (wear rubber gloves) and leave for a few minutes making sure the area remains wet with the spray then warm water wash.

It’s best to test this first on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first to make sure there are no issues.

Q. We have recently moved into a property and the previous owner had one room as a prayer room and lit essence, which has a lingering odour. Is there any paint or can you suggest a remedy as the smell can be intense.

A. Only suggestion is that if there are curtains and carpets in the room, to get the curtains dry cleaned and the carpet commercially cleaned, possibly steam cleaned.

Wipe the wall down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner changing the cloth regularly.

Ventilate the room as much as possible and then review the odour level.

Q. I am looking to repaint my entire house/shed/workshop starting with the latter. Can you advise a general primer/undercoat for painted steel beams, bare wood (macrocarpa) doors and plastic (PVC) columns? All the above have been water blasted, sanded and cleaned. The topcoat colour will be a dark grey/black.

A. Prime the prepared steel with two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

For the timber apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and then two coats of Resene Lustacryl – use the Resene CoolColour version of the top coat colour. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch.

For the PVC spouting/downpipes apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl CoolColour.

Q. I have a small new aluminium deck .8 x 2.4 m surface area. This is an aluminium treadplate. We want to paint it. Which system is best for this it is a lightly used pedestrian walkway, residential use?

A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash to label instructions then apply a coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

Q. I have just had an outside deck sanded and two coats of stain applied over consecutive evenings approx 6pm at night Black is showing through in patches presumably it is mould. What would the best fix be for absolute best result not just an ok result?

A. You could try treating areas showing blackness with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions. If it is mould on the surface this should bleach out the black colour.

Q. I have a new plywood wall panel in a plasterboard lined kitchen painted with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. Which paints would be required for ply? And what is needed if we decided on a clear finish?

A. For a solid paint system apply a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry and then finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. For a clear system apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss, semi-gloss or satin (note that Aquaclear Natural is not suitable for this application).

Q. Do you supply acrylic airbrush paint?

A. We do not have specific acrylic paints formulated for air brushing. However we have had other customers use Resene testpots (waterborne paint) for air brushing.

Q. Why does the oil-based paint form a skin when it sits in the container for more than a few hours and how do I stop this happening please?

A. Skinning in alkyd based paints is a common feature of storage of a partly used can but can also occur in a newly opened can. Alkyd based paints dry by reaction with air (oxygen) so at the top of a can or during hot conditions some of the solvent can evaporate and thus leads to the state of cure as air is also present.

For storage this can be reduced by storing the can inverted ensuing the lid is firmly attached. During use regular string and addition of a small amount of thinner usually turps can delay the process and help re incorporate the partly cured skin. The success of the latter is related to how far the curing of the paint skin has occurred.

Try to keep the paint cool and out of direct sunlight.

Q. After applying Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer are we supposed to sand it before applying Resene Lustacryl? I know you would normally sand between a primer and topcoat but I thought this product might be different and I haven’t found anywhere that says to sand. I have put it on laminate cupboard doors.

A. We do not recommend sanding Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer before overcoating, The Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is thin and sanding can remove the adhesion primer film.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better.

Q. Which products would you recommend for DIY repainting/spraying aluminium joinery (outside windows and doors)?

A. For weathered surfaces scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. For the most durable system apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Etch (if there are signs of corrosion pitting substitute the Resene Vinyl Etch for Resene Armourcote 221) and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 402 tinted to your required colour. For elevations that are subject to severe weathering you can overcoat the Resene Uracryl pigmented topcoat with a coat of Resene Uracryl 402 UVS Clear. The UVS clear (ultraviolet stabilised) protects the tinted colour from UV and weathering. All products are designed for brush application.

Q. I have some steel flat bar surrounding my swimming pool. It has been newly galvanised and will frequently come in contact with salt waters chlorine pool water. I would like some advice on what product to paint this steel with.

A. Wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions. Glossy areas on new HD galvanising are an indication of chromate quenching post galvanising and this surface must be removed prior to painting. Sand areas of glossy galvanising using a mechanical sanding with 100 grit abrasive paper to achieve a dull finish. Care must be taken to ensure no excess removal of the zinc layer in this process. Then apply two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.

Q. What type of paint do you use for skirting and door frames? We have used Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom for the walls in our bathroom. Do we use the same for the skirting and door jambs?

A. We recommend you use Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom for skirting and door frames. The higher gloss level is more hard wearing.

Q. I have stained doors and skirting and would like to paint over them with white paint. What do I need to do to avoid the strain coming through the paint? Is there a particular paint that is best suited to skirting and doors?

A. We recommend you apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal.

Q. I have painted timber with two coats of exterior acrylic paint. Some days later dry boards stick to each other. Why do painted things stick to each other? How can I fix this?

A. If two surfaces painted with a conventional waterborne paint come together under pressure they will stick. This is known as block resistance, Cross linked waterborne paints such as Resene waterborne enamels have block resistance and once cured for a time boards can be stacked without sticking.

Q. I have a painter who has just fully sanded a cedar garage door back to the bare wood. I believe it was a varnish of sorts. I am unsure whether to specify an oil based stain or a water based one.

A. Unless the existing clear coat is completely removed by sanding staining may not be 100% successful as the stain penetration will possibly be compromised. If the removal can be achieved I would recommend using Resene Woodsman Wood Oil for staining.

Q. We have just bought a house that is clad in rusticated weatherboard and has previously been stained black with creosote several times. From what I can find on the internet I seem to have no option but to keep applying creosote. Nasty stuff that it is! Is that the case or can I stain over the creosote? It was last stained over 10 years ago I believe.

A. Resene Waterborne Woodsman may be applied to an old weathered creosote stain.

Q. I have painted two French doors with oil based gloss but need to repaint with a low sheen enamel. Am I able to use an acrylic enamel directly on a newly glossed oil enamel – if not what sort of undercoat would I need – acrylic or oil based?

A. To be safe apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry before applying the Resene Room Velvet (waterborne alkyd).

Q. Is it ok to use Resene Lumbersider on Hardie® fibrous sheeting?

A. Yes, apply a primer coat of Resene Concrete Primer before applying the Resene Lumbersider topcoats.

Q. For a decramastic roof, which paint is best – Resene Summit Roof or Resene Lumbersider? If Resene Lumbersider is the right option, is CoolColour the way to go?

I will be spot priming using Resene Galvo-Prime as it’s waterborne and won't affect the bitumen. I want a low sheen finish and will be using an airless sprayer.

A. Resene Summit Roof is our roof paint option, when using dark colours on any exterior substrate we recommend using the CoolColour version of the topcoat colour. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch.

Resene Summit Commercial is targeted for airless application by trade customers with the required airless spray set up.

Q. I have just painted with chalk paint and sanded it back. What product can I put on this that is clear and not glossy so it is protected for day to day use?

A. We only have a soft wax clear coating available – Karen Walker Soft Wax.

Q. I’d like to paint the back of my new glass splashback with a white metallic effect.

A. The splashback supplier can apply a thin coat of Resene Silver Aluminium colour then a body coat of Resene White – this should achieve what you are after.

Q. Our mid 1970s house has an interior cedar feature wall. It's in good condition where it is out of the sun but has lightened and yellowed where it gets sun. I don't think it has a colour stain but may have some form of oil or varnish. Do you have any suggestions about how I should go about preparing and restoring the timber?

A. Give the bleached areas a sand to remove some of the degraded material then apply a coat of Resene Colorwood Western Red Cedar then finish with two coats of Resene Aquaclear in your gloss level of choice.

Q. Do you need an oil based primer for window putty?

A. Our recommendation is to use Resene Enamel Undercoat as the primer for linseed oil putty that has been allowed to develop a skin.

Q. I am repairing some rot in my villa, mostly bare timber but also builders bog and in some places epoxy glue and filler. Which is the best primer?

A. We don’t recommend using builders bog for exterior repairs to timber as it has a tendency to pop out over time. However you can use Resene Quick Dry as the primer for the filed areas as long as the filler material is thoroughly sanded.

Q. I wish to paint a 37 year old brick house. Please advise if any preparation is required before applying two coats of Resene Lumbersider? The brick has clinkers which I plan to cut off. Does that change the paint recommendation?

A. Firstly make sure that there are no pointing defects. Painting over a clinkered brick substrate can result in issues as paint will not fill the spaces that are in the clinkered brick area. Our suggestion is to remove the clinker protrusions then apply a solid plaster finish to achieve a flush surface then paint.

Q. I want to repaint our metal garage door. Can you let me know how to prep the door and which type of paint would be best?

A. Assuming the existing paint system is sound wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label instructions to remove all dirt and salts, then apply two coats of Resene X-200.

Q. We have a Kwila deck 25+ years old, which has probably never been treated but is in surprisingly good condition. It is in desperate need of some TLC. The question – which of your products would you recommend – paint, oil or stain? We don't want to have to ‘refresh’ it every year. We are thinking a cream colour to match the aluminium joinery.

A. Treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions then follow with a thorough scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash following label instructions, The Timber and Deck Wash will not kill mould/mould spores hence the first treatment with Resene Moss & Mould Killer. You may need to sand the deck using 180 grit sandpaper to remove any timber protrusions. Then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

Q. I have white tiles with a fine black line design for my kitchen backsplash and would really love to change the colour from black to navy or lighter blue. At this point they have not been installed so it might be easier to re-colour. Is it possible? Which paint?

A. Are the tiles glazed? If so the following can be used to paint the tiles – using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

Q. Which is the best stain blocker primer paint to use in an old kitchen that has years (30 plus) of greasy build up. Even when washed with sugar soap it’s not good. Plus something that would cover the dark blue/green colour on the ceiling.

A. Sorry but paint stain blockers cannot be applied over a greasy/oily surface. Sugar Soap would be your best cleaning product to remove the grease/oi. Yu may have to repeat the cleaning a number of times. Re covering the dark ceiling colour, as long as the painted surface is grease/oil free you can apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat to assist with topcoating in a light colour.

Q. I have built an outdoor boxed garden from macrocarpa sleepers. I would like to treat/stain the timber so it will retain its natural wood colour over time.

A. Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain in a colour close to the timber colour. We don’t recommend a clear finish as clears do not perform in exterior exposure on timber.

Q. We have a vanity design for which our clients would like a timber top that appears ‘whitewashed’ or scrubbed, like an old table top, within a ‘Hamptons’ style interior design. American White Ash has been recommended as a light but durable timber.

A. We recommend you apply Resene Colorwood Rock Salt stain, leave for 48 house to cure than apply three coats of Resene Polythane for the best clear over coat option.

Q. Is there any requirement regarding frequency of precast wall panels to paint or coat? Or if you have a 100 years lifespan of the precast panel, how often does that precast need to be repainted or coated as part of the maintenance?

A. If the precast concrete is weathertight then painting is only for aesthetic reasons. Given this an appropriate standard paint system should only require maintenance to restore aesthetics approximately every 10 years but this will vary with exposure conditions, for a northern elevation the time will be reduced possibly by 2 years.

Q. We have an exterior shed door that has been polyurethaned. We want to match it to our house door which is Resene Bi Hoki. Can you advise a suitable undercoat and topcoat system to do this?

A. Sand the existing clear coat to de-gloss it and profile it for repainting. Dust off and apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

Q. We need to repaint a covered timber deck at our playcentre. It was previously painted but is now bare. We need it to be as non-slip as possible. What would you recommend?

A. If any areas of moss or mould infestation exist then treat them with Resene Moss & Mould Killer, diluted and used to label directions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed.

Scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions. Rinse clean or hose down with fresh water ensuring all salts are also removed.

Apply a primer coat of Resene Wood Primer then finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. The Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path will give the best wet slip resistance but will be more difficult to clean.

Q. I just want a simple white paint for the walls in my new shop. It needs to be wipeable and flat (not too shiny). The walls will be a combination of MDF and plywood.

A. Apply Resene Quick Dry as the primer for both substrates then finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Flat.

Q. I have Rimu floorboards and we are sanding them all back. I don't like the true yellow /orange colour of the Rimu even with just a clear matt finish. What do you recommend to give more of an ash finish if possible?

A. If you mean a white ash style finish then you could apply a coat of Resene Colorwood Rock Salt then overcoat with a polyurethane varnish.

Q. I have recently brought a car that has been painted with house paint. The painting was done a long time ago and is cracked and very lumpy. How can I remove the paint as I cannot sand it because it fills the paper and I cannot scrape it due to the vintage steel underneath?

A. Chemical stripping using a paint stripper is the only way to remove the paint. The paint is behaving as a waterborne paint, the heat generated by sanding softens the paint and it balls up.

Q. What do I specify for external paints to reduce colour change over time?

A. To give an increased level of fade and wear resistance we recommend that Resene Clearcoat UVS is applied over the coloured waterborne basecoat paint system. The higher the gloss level the longer it will take for the paint surface to chalk. However most people prefer a lower gloss finish despite the technical benefits of a higher gloss level. We can apply a lower gloss level clear over the Resene Clearcoat UVS – this will maintain fade resistance but not time to onset of surface chalking. The northern elevations will show paint degradation and chalking before other elevations as this elevation receives more intense weathering.

Q. I am looking for a low VOC paint to touch up our window sills in our children’s room.

A. We recommend Resene Lustacryl. Clean down to remove grease/oil then sand to profile for recoating. For the best topcoat adhesion apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry to the prepared existing paint surface.

Q. I have just purchased a 1989 plaster house. The previous owner used Resene paint for painting the external plaster walls 7 years ago outside. Which type of paint and other primer do you recommend?

A. The northern elevation will be the first elevation to show break down, this is usually surface chalking.

Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. My preference would be to apply two coats of Resene X-200 weathertight membrane but as long as there are no water ingress issues you can apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider if you prefer.

Q. My husband wants to let off bora bombs how long after painting should he do this?

A. Allow at least 1 month. However a paint film will act as an isolation barrier between the chemical and the timber.

Q. We are building a new home with a concrete floor. We want to paint the concrete floor with a whitewash effect and then seal it with a matte finish sealer. We were thinking of using your Resene Walk-on product but it says it can't be diluted. We've gone ahead and tested a couple of Resene testpots and found the colour we like. We tested this on the concrete floor diluted 50% and 25% and really like the way it looks with the 25% dilution. Is there any reason we can't go ahead with this approach, using standard paint that is diluted on concrete? And can you recommend a sealer product?

A. We don’t usually recommend diluting paint as this leads to application of a reduced film thickness.

However in this case a 25% dilution could be used to give you a wash effect. The Resene testpots contain Resene Lumbersider so you could use Resene Lumbersider diluted for your floor. As long as the concrete has a degree of porosity this will allow the paint to grip onto the surface. Resene Concrete Wax could be used as the clear sealer.

Check using the water splash test for the presence of a curing membrane, water splashed onto the concrete should immediately darken the concrete and be absorbed. If the water is not immediately absorbed and the wet concrete does not darkens then this indicates the presence of a curing membrane If the splash test indicated a curing membrane then diamond grind to remove the existing curing membrane and to achieve a uniform surface profile similar to 180 grit sandpaper. Ensure all grinding dust is removed, this may require wet mopping.

Q. We need to seal/coat a small asphalt surface to be used as an MPI pad. We have spoken to two adhesion sealing companies who are both looking at epoxy based products.

A. Epoxy cannot be applied over an asphalt based substrate. We recommend the following; wash down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover diluted and used to label instructions. Apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry and leave the last coat of Resene Quick Dry to dry for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 402 with Resene Industrial Grit added at the rate of 500 gm/L to the first coat. A pour and spread application method is recommended for the Industrial SRG modified coat to give an even aggregate distribution.

Q. I am looking to clad an upstairs exterior wall with a H3.2 CCA treated plywood product. We will be collecting drinking rainwater below this product Do you have a paint system to seal this product, primer and topcoats, to prevent leaching?

A. Best system would be to apply a seal coat of Resene Wood Primer then finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 tinted topcoat.

Disconnect water collection and allow the newly coated areas to be rain washed for a few good rain showers before reconnection for water collection.

A. I always select the brush size to get as close to the width of the timber to be painted.

Q. I would like to paint a tanalised plywood floor in a craft studio. What to use? The colour is to be black.

A. Apply a prime coat of Resene Wood Primer then Resene Acrylic Undercoat tinted to the darkest grey possible and leave the undercoat to dry for at least 48 hours before applying two coats of Resene Uracryl 802 Black.

Q. I'm having a new zincalume roof put on a shed. I read the Resene leaflet which mentioned that zincalume had a 'form oil' on it which interfered with painting and should be removed. How do I remove it? Is it best to paint the zincalume immediately, or to let it weather slightly first?

A. Wash the roof down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted and used to label instructions then apply a primer coat of Resene Galvo-Prime and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. The new roof is best prepared and painted as soon as possible after installation.

Q. I want to repaint our bathroom vanity cupboards. I think they are made of chipboard. They have deteriorated on the edges. I have touched them up but now want to be brave and repaint them. What paint should I use please and should it be enamel paint?

A. Ensure the existing painted surface is degreased and then sand using 220 grit sandpaper to profile for recoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry and lightly sand after the application of the second coat. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom.

Q. Which primer do I use on an old weathered (but in good condition) COLORSTEEL® roof, prior to applying Resene Summit Roof CoolColour by airless sprayer? I have de-moulded and washed it down as advised. I want to spray the primer on as it's a big roof!

A. We recommend Resene Pre-Coated Steel Primer.

Q. We stained our deck with a waterbased timber dark brown, but muddy footprints are very obvious. If we can clean it up and then apply an acrylic varnish I am sure it would look fresh and clean. Can you advise me on a product please?

A. If it is a stained finish then we do not recommend an exterior clear over it. Usually stains are not overcoated with a clear finish outside.

If it is a paint, the only way to usually make something mark less is to apply a clear but the clear finish will be smoother and make the surface less slip resistant… which might be an issue if the deck gets water on it.

Generally for trafficable areas we recommend going for a mid-range colour – not too white or not too dark – to reduce the risk of marks. The higher the sheen level, the easier to clean but also the less slip resistant.

The other potential alternative, which may work is to have a door mat before you reach the deck so people can wipe their feet before they go across the deck. This can be useful to reduce dirt being tracked across.

Generally muddy marks can be removed with a product like diluted Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. We don’t recommend just water as it tends to move the dirt around rather than fully shift it.

Q. I was wondering if Resene Concrete Primer with two coats of Resene Lumbersider low sheen would be any good at waterproofing precast concrete panels.

A. The system would be to prime with Resene Concrete Primer and then apply three coats of Resene X-200 to achieve a weathertight system. If the substrate is old and weathered you will need to substitute Resene Concrete Primer for a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal.

Q. The south side of my roof (10-15 year-old COLORSTEEL® I believe) appears as though it is degrading as it has white patches. The patches don't actually feel flaky by hand at all. Which paint-system approach would you recommend for repainting? The house is around 500 metres from a heavy-salt-surf beach.

A. The white material is zinc corrosion products arising from corrosion of the base metal cladding and is not unexpected given the age and location of the roof. There is a chance that there are other areas with under film corrosion which may not as yet broken through.

For spot repairs wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash diluted used to label instructions. Remove all areas of white corrosion material using mechanical methods e.g. 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc, taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Spot prime the prepared areas of corrosion with two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer and then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

Q. I have a galvanised wrought iron fence close to the sea that needs a repaint. I have water blasted it, scraped and sanded it down and got rid of all loose material. There is some white corrosion on the front facing the sea – do I put something on this or just sand it? The surface now is a mixture of previous painted and bare galvanised surface. With the sanding it has been light as I did not want to break through the galvanising.

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. Thoroughly scrub the surface with a stiff nylon broom to ensure complete removal of all grease, moss and mould residue, and any other contaminants. Rinse or water blast clean with fresh water ensuring all salts are also removed.

All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure waterblasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc) to leave only tightly adherent corrosion products taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas.

Where under-film corrosion is taking place, the existing paint must first be removed as previous methods including under film corrosion products taking care not to damage sound zinc coated areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish.

Note: The performance of the subsequent paint systems will be largely dependent on the thoroughness of this surface preparation stage.

Spot prime prepared area of corrosion with two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer followed by a full coat of Resene Galvo-Prime and two coats of Resene Enamacryl.
