Q. Have just painted new laundry doors with white waterbased semi-gloss enamel (two weeks ago). My wife wants oil based. Can it be done easily? A. Lightly sand then undercoat with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. November 2014
Q. What do you recommend as a clear finish on a 100mm macrocarpa kitchen benchtop? A. Apply four coats of Resene Polythane and ensure end cuts are well sealed. November 2014
Q. I'm in a rental and have a lot of chips in my walls and am wondering how I would fix them and colour match them or will I have to paint the whole walls? A. Paint will not fill crack or chips. Usually a filer like PAL Contract Filler is used to fill defects and then sanded, primed and then repainted. Colour matching of the colour may well prove difficult and my suggestion would be to repaint the walls. November 2014

Q. We have a dining table from a furniture store that we would like to improve and change. It is wood and has a dark stain on it, the shop said it is an import from Vietnam. I have read the dining table makeover on the Resene website and have a couple of questions. The two products Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Enamacryl waterborne gloss enamel are described in the dining table makeover. My question is, are these products good, safe ones to use on a surface a family will be using for food? Do they have a strong smell? What are they like when they have sun on them? Do they emit a chemical smell when they get hot? How do they cope with water and heat on them? A. Both products are Environmental Choice Approved. This means that they would be suitable for the purpose you want provided they are well cured and wiped down with water prior to first use. There will be a low odour level for about a week post application, but provided there is good ventilation the odour will disappear. November 2014
Q. I'm wanting to paint my house in Resene Napa or Resene Double Napa. Do I need it to be in CoolColours? What are the benefits? A. When painting timber weatherboards in dark colours we recommend Resene CoolColours to reduce the risk of cupping and warping of the boards due to heat. What is the existing colour and do you have any idea of how many times the property has been painted? I assume that the house is clad with timber weatherboards. November 2014
Q. Why do some texture paints give you more time to roll before you get lapping lines - some a couple of minutes, others at least 15 minutes - what is in the paint that causes this? A. In the main the open time is dictated by the resin used to formulate the paint. As the solids level increases there is less water to be released from the wet paint film and this can decrease open time. There are a number of resin types used to formulate textured paints and this is the most likely cause of the variation you describe. Open/dry times for the same texture paint will also vary greatly with application temperature and humidity. November 2014
Q. Is Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat the best product to use on Douglas Fir exterior timber followed byResene Sonyx 101? A. Our Technical expert recommends Resene Wood Primer. November 2014
Q. What do you recommend to apply to a fence built of pine timber? A. For new timber: Solid paint finish: Resene Lumbersider two coats direct onto the timber. If dark colours are selected then use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour. Stain finish: Resene Woodsman, two coats applied direct to the timber. You can use Resene Waterborne Woodsman (waterborne) or Resene Woodsman Oil Stain (solventborne). Most customers generally use the waterborne version. November 2014
Q. Can waterborne paints be painted over old alkyds? A. Application of waterborne paints to aged alkyds is now commonplace with the proviso that the old alkyd is clean, sound and thoroughly sanded prior to application of the waterborne paint finish. Resene acrylics are formulated using adhesion promoters to give the desired level of adhesion. Resene Wood Primer (oil based primer) can be topcoated with any Resene exterior acrylic paint finish after a minimum dry time of 16 hours. November 2014
Q. I want to paint the rear of a large glass wall hanging panel with black paint. What type of Resene paint should I use for a long lasting and non-peeling finish? A. Unless there is heat involved the easiest to use would be Resene Super Gloss enamel - it has good adhesion to glass. November 2014
Q. The engineer has specified hot dipped galvanising for steel support posts to deck. What should we finish it in? A. We recommend Resene Armourcote 221 and Resene Uracryl for brush application. November 2014
Q. Are grassmarking paints different? A. Most grass marking paints are diluted acrylic (waterborne) paints as this does not interfere with the photosynthesis of the grass which if a fully blocking paint was applied would see the grass die. November 2014
Q. I want to paint windowsills and some trim on my old weatherboard bungalow in a dark blue colour called Resene Lucky Point. This has a luminance number of 32. If I use the CoolColour version will it be safe to paint? I don't want such a dark colour to wreck the wood or have it turn chalky from the sun and wind. I won't be painting the weatherboards this dark colour; they will be white. A. The darker the colour the shorter the time to onset of chalking and also an increased potential for issues associated with heating of the surface due to the dark colour. When we are dealing with cool colours we give a TSR value. TSR is total solar reflectance and for the non-cool colour this is 11.7% and increases to 31.2 % for the Resene CoolColour™ version. The higher TSR value is the beneficial feature. To maximise TSR apply the two coats of CoolColour topcoat over a white base coat. If you are applying the new system over an old paint system of a lighter existing colour you will need to be aware of the potential for the old coating losing adhesion due to the heat stress of the darker colour. December 2014
Q. We've moved into a house with a very ugly stained particle board floor in the bathroom. Please advise re painting over it. A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label instructions and thoroughly sand to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Allow the new paint to cure for 48 hours with good ventilation before exposure to water/steam. December 2014
Q. We have an exposed aggregate concrete patio which we are having cleaned. Do you have some sort of sealer we can apply to protect the patio and keep it looking good? A. Suggest you apply 3-4 coats of Resene Concrete Wax to the cleaned surface. December 2014
Q. Can you coat a deck in Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stain that has previously been coated with Resene Woodsman Decking Stain? A. Yes as long as the old stain has undergone direct weathering for at least 12 months and is then thoroughly scrubbed using Resene Timber and Deck Wash following the label instructions. December 2014
Q. How do I go about lime washing a wooden bookcase that has previously been varnished? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, sand with 220 grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key, dust off and apply Resene Colorwood Whitewash following the label instructions. December 2014
Q. We have prepainted cork tiles in kitchen and dining area. However they are now in need of recoating as the sun has changed the colour in some parts. How do we go about this? A. Clean down with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, sand with 220 grit sandpaper, dust off then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat. December 2014
Q. I want to update an old metal chair frame by painting it white. It is black at the moment. What primer and paint should I use? A. Wet sand with 400 grit wet and dry paper, wipe down and dust off then apply a coat of Resene GP Metal Primer. You can then apply a water or solventborne topcoat. December 2014
Q. Can we paint our new pine weatherboards in a dark charcoal colour in Taupo? Or will the timber warp in the sun with a dark colour? A. There will always be a potential for dimensional changes when timber weatherboards are painted in dark colours. Resene CoolColour™ technology will give dark colours with increased solar reflectance (reflect more heat) but cannot totally negate heat related issues associated with dark colours. December 2014
Q. I have a laundry area that has been painted (many years ago) in a peachy high gloss and wondered how I would go about preparing the wall to paint it. A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then thoroughly sand using 180 grit sandpaper to degloss, dust off then apply Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. You can then apply any Resene interior wall paint. December 2014
Q. I'm painting the exterior of my (Hardiboard®) house that has been neglected for a while. The major issue is the rust on each nail and the flashing. I've been sold Resene GP Metal Primer to coat over the nails and flashing once I sand each one back. Is that what you would recommend? The paint is generally in good condition but there are patches where the paint has been damaged by plants or possibly moss or something else. Can I just sand that back a bit to a smooth surface and paint over or should I put some sort of primer on first? Which paint type do you recommend? A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following the label instructions. Where there is rusting you will need to strip off the existing paint back to bare metal before priming with two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer. This can be done using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc which is powered using an electric drill. Sand areas of defective paint and apply Resene Sureseal to any areas of bare board. Then you can apply two coats of a Resene exterior acrylic. December 2014
Q. What is the best option for painting wooden/varnished kitchen cupboards? How would I prepare them and how can I ensure the paint won't look streaky? I was hoping to paint them white if that's possible. A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then lightly sand and dust off then apply a coat or Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The paint system will require 5-7 days to develop reasonable adhesion and hardness. Please note that the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not designed to achieve opacity or build. Roller application using a Resene No.4 sleeve will give the most uniform finish. December 2014
Q. We are wanting to restain a building that has had linseed oil stain on the board and battens. What product would Resene advise which is similar? A. We do not have a linseed oil based stain as we believe that the presence of the oil can contribute to mould growth and the amount of anti-mould additive required to control this is not advisable. We would recommend Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain. December 2014
Q. I am currently trying to freshen up some windows in the back shed. These windows look about 30+ years old and I have scraped the flaky paint off and sanded back and painted with sealer. It now has a browny colour coming through the paint where it was scraped back to bare wood. What can I do to stop this happening? A. I assume that you used a waterborne primer and that the timber is either redwood or cedar. What you have is tannin bleed from the timber. Tannins are water soluble and are activated by the waterborne primer. Apply a coat of Resene StainLock over the brown areas and then continue with a Resene waterborne topcoat system. December 2014
Q. Previously painted masonry blocks need upgrading on a 25 year old home. The blocks are sound and dry. Which is best - Resene X-200 or Resene Lumbersider? A. Resene X-200 (three coats) to achieve weathertightness. If this is not required then you can use Resene Lumbersider for a decorative only option. You may need to seal the bare areas using Resene Sureseal given the age of the blocks. December 2014
Q. I live near the beach and have just renovated my bach. The original cladding is cedar that's gone black with age and the new build is Shadowclad®. I've been told I can't stain it and that I can't use a dark colour because of the sun and wind. Is that true? What colour will go with the black cedar? I wanted a volcanic red but that's dark so maybe grey? A. Cedar does not develop black as the cedar ages, it usually goes grey. The black colour may be due to mould growth. This can be tested by application of a bleach solution and seeing if the black colour fades/disappears or lightens. Cladding suppliers place LRV limits on colours used for painting the cladding. The lower limit is usually 40% and this does restrict the choice of dark colours. The LRV restriction is due to the potential for warping/cupping of the boards. Resene CoolColour™ technology can increase the amount of heat reflected by a dark colour but with very dark colours there will remain a potential for dimensional changes to still occur. December 2014
Q. I just sealed plasterboard walls and ceiling in a bathroom with Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer. Do I need an undercoat before painting two topcoats? A. For wet areas such as bathrooms our recommended sealer is Resene Sureseal not Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer. If you have already applied the Resene Broadwall sealer, for wet areas you will need to apply the Resene Sureseal over the wallboard sealer before topcoating. December 2014
Q. Is there a specific paint used for white washing brick so that the end result is not a 'dusty chalky' effect. I'd like a little bit of a glossy look if possible. A. For internal brocks you could use Resene Enamel Undercoat thinned with Resene Thinner No.2 then apply a coat of Resene Qristal Gloss varnish as the glaze coat. The success will be determined by your artistic abilities to apply the diluted wash coat. December 2014
Q. We have bought a house and the walls of the dining room have a bad textured plaster job. Can we roll on a coloured textured paint to minimise this? If so what is the best to use? A. Application of a high build acrylic such as Resene Thixalon will fill in some of the texture but I would be surprised if you can achieve a near level finish. Application of textured coatings may exacerbate the problem. December 2014
Q. What paint should I use for an exterior topcoat for wooden windows? Waterborne is OK. Needs to last well with UV. Have some Resene Quick Dry primer already. A. You can use Resene Enamacryl or Resene Lustacryl for this application; the exterior durability of both exceeds the solventborne versions. December 2014
Q. We have a concrete sink bench that we want to use in our laundry. Do you have a product that will seal/waterproof this? We have ground and sanded it back to its raw state. A. You could use Resene ArmourBond (probably 2 coats), although the product is a clear epoxy and this will give the concrete a yellow-brown colour. December 2014
Q. A client wants to apply a white paint/stain to some external spotted gum timber post framing. I would like to use an external paint like a stain, then apply a clear finish suitable for external timber over the top. A. We have Resene Woodsman Whitewash as an exterior wash stain but this cannot be overcoated with clears. December 2014
Q. Can an acrylic outdoor paint be painted over with a prep coat of Resene TimberLock? A. Resene TimberLock is usually overcoated with a dedicated wood primer such as Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before topcoating with a waterborne finish as we do not consider the product to functionally be a wood primer. December 2014
Q. I am planning to paint the cedar exterior of my house this summer. The house was built in 1989 and I was just after some advice about the best way to wash cedar before restaining. I heard waterblasting will damage the wood and the other option was a chem wash but I've heard these can be quite harsh. A. Scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and applied following label directions. December 2014
Q. I am stripping old galvanised pipe handrails and need to repaint them. Some of the upright rods are slightly rusty but the main pipes are like new. What do I prime with and is there a recommended topcoat? A. Ensure that all loose corrosion products are prepared back to a sound substrate. Spot prime prepared corroded areas with Resene Galvo One, leave to dry for 16 hours then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One. Allow to dry overnight then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof. December 2014
Q. What is the best paint to use on concrete steps on the outside of my house? A. We recommend Resene Walk-on. December 2014
Q. Can I use magnetic paint underneath the chalkboard paint? A. Yes you can use Resene Magnetic Magic under Resene Blackboard Paint. Make sure the Resene Magnetic Magic is on nice and thick and check your magnets are sticking well before topcoating. December 2014
Q. Can I paint COLORBOND® flashing, not roof, with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer before overcoating with quality acrylic paint? A. There is no need to use an adhesion primer if the COLORBOND® has undergone a minimum of four weeks direct weathering. We don't recommend that it is painted when it is newer than that. December 2014
Q. What is the best paint to use to paint yellow safety lines on a pack house floor - forklifts and pallet trolley areas plus walking areas? A. The best product we have would be Resene Uracryl 403. Clean down the area to be painted using Altex P40 Cleaner following label directions, allow to dry. Water splashed onto the cleaned area should immediately darken the concrete. Iif this does not occur then the system cannot be applied. Prime lines with Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 and then apply the two coats of Resene Uracryl 403 in your chosen colour. December 2014
Q. I have just started to paint our lounge ceiling with ceiling paint. At the third roller load some of the original paint has peeled off around the roller. It leaves bare plasterboard. It looks like the previous owner may not have sealed the plasterboard. Have I any option bar scraping/sanding the whole ceiling? A. Sorry no alternative but to scrape back to a sound edge then seal bare areas with Resene Sureseal then apply the ceiling paint. December 2014
Q. We are applying your acrylic quick dry primer to new plasterboard. From research it seems as though we should be watering this down to help with absorption. Can you tell me if we should be doing this and if so what the ratio should be? A. It is not our recommendation to use Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat as the basecoat for new stopped plasterboard, our recommendation is Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer. December 2014
Q. What do you recommend for a waterbased primer and topcoat for ESP foam model aircraft? A. Prime with Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat then apply any Resene waterborne enamel topcoat in your selected colours. December 2014
Q. I've used your Resene Uracryl coatings for many years in marine and other applications and they've performed really well. Normally I apply direct to epoxy coated timber. However I'm about to repaint a GRP boat deck and am looking for a suitable epoxy based primer. Is a primer absolutely necessary on GRP and if so, can you recommend one? A. A primer is required for GRP. We recommend Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer. December 2014
Q. We are repainting the interior of our wooden boat which is prone to mould. Have scraped down to original paint (enamel I assume). What is best prep/undercoat/topcoat to resist mould? I'm thinking gloss or semi-gloss in Resene Colonial White. A. Mould growth is symptomatic of conditions. Treat areas of mould with Resene Moss and Mould Killer following label directions. Sand existing paint to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system. Dust off and apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. This system will give the maximum protection against mould growth but it will only function if all the mould and spores are killed using Resene Moss & Mould Killer. December 2014
Q. I am erecting some structural steel. The steel is galvanised and coated with Resene Armourcote 220. Which Resene Uracryl product should I use as the finish coat? A. You can use either Resene Uracryl 402 (semi-gloss) or Resene Uracryl 403 (gloss). Given that the Resene Armourcote 220 may have gone past the recoat window of the product, wash down the Resene Armourcote 220 with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Etch before applying the two coats of Resene Uracryl finish. December 2014
Q. I want to paint a design on my polyethylene mailbox. Can I use Resene testpots for this? And if so, do I need to apply another clear layer of something over the design to protect it from the weather? A. Adhesion of waterborne paints to new polyethylene is poor. It may improve with weathering but cannot be 100% confident as it will depend upon the degree of weathering. December 2014
Q. What is the correct white exterior paint to use on a 25 year old Lockwood home. The metal laminated boards were initially powdercoated I believe. A. Correct. The original Lockwood cladding was a coated aluminium laminate. Given the age of your property I would assume that there is severe chalking on the most exposed elevations. If there is no sign of breakthrough of corrosion of the aluminium layer to reveal the underlying timber then scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label instructions and then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof paint. If the prep reveals bare aluminium prime these areas with Resene Galvo One before applying the topcoats. December 2014
Q. Looking for a paint system for steel and galvanised steel. Does this product galvanise the steel or is the steel galvanised before the product is applied? A. Paint is normally applied to a galvanised surface. Zinc rich paints can be used as an alternative to hot dip galvanising. December 2014
Q. We are a community project doing pest control. We have a workshop where we have freezers with meat for traps and also poisoned bait. It can be very muddy in winter (people's boots are covered with mud). The concrete slab is recent (a few years old) and was covered until last week with bits of old and reused lino. I removed the old stuff and want to seal and paint the floor to have a clean looking and easy to look after floor. A slippery surface is not an option as I don't want people to slide and fall down when it's wet. What would you suggest we do? A. Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring would be our recommendation. December 2014
Q. The cladding on our home is either cedar or white pine, 25 years old and requires restaining. What is the best Resene product for this? Woodsman? Waterborne or oil based? Which of the two give the best performance in terms of durability and protection? A. I would use the Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain for this application. The recoat interval is the same for both Woodsman versions. Scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash following the label directions as the prep. December 2014
Q. Please can you advise a Resene product(s) to refinish the metal fascia on the gable ends of my house? Was originally finished with an oil based paint but some years ago I repainted with an exterior acrylic. The white spots appeared soon after. A. The spotting is due to the migration of zinc corrosion products through the paint film. The only way to prepare this for repainting would be to strip all of the coatings from the fascia to reveal how much under film corrosion has occurred. December 2014
Q. The previous owners had an automatic Ecomist can which has left 80cm stain down the wall. I have applied three coats of a stain blocker, primer sealer (waterbase) and then three coats of topcoat. The stain is still leaching through. Can you recommend any further treatment to hide the stain? Washing and sanding didn't work which was why I applied the stain blocker. A. Normally the treatment you have used does effect stain blocking. Another option would be to wipe the surface down with Resene Emulsifiable Solvent Cleaner, then wipe down the area with water and a cloth until the wash water is clear. This will require water changes. Allow to dry then reapply the Resene StainLock. December 2014
Q. Do I have to prime fibrous plaster cornices? I have your Resene Sureseal and am wondering if this can be used? A. Yes it should be sealed/primed and the correct sealer/primer is Resene Sureseal. December 2014
Q. What is the process for painting preprimed internal wooden window frames. Is it just undercoat and two topcoats? A. We recommend sanding the primer with 180 grit sandpaper, dust off and apply Resene Enamel Undercoat and the two enamel topcoats. If the windows are in a wet area then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer before the above coats. December 2014
Q. We have a very large swimming pool. It has been painted with a solventborne product. How long do you recommend that we leave it until we fill it up with water? A. You will need to ensure that all solvents are removed from the pool. Most solvents are heavier than air and therefore settle at the deepest point. This may require use of fans or blowers. December 2014
Q. I have just fitted a new wooden front door. I have varnished the exterior side but was wondering if I can paint white on the inside face of door? All my interior doors are white as well as my architraves. Is this the norm or should I have a varnished inside as well? A. Usually the exterior face of wooden doors are painted with a solid colour as varnish will undergo degradation if exposed to full weathering. However there are no hard and fast rules, it comes down to personal choice. December 2014
Q. Which paint should I use for my already painted corrugated iron fence? A. As long as the existing paint system is sound then we recommended Resene Summit Roof, two coats after a wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following the label instructions. December 2014
Q. Could you please advise me on what product I would need to paint over wallpaper? I know there is some sort of sealer that needs to be applied so that it does not soak up coats and coats of paint. A. We recommend application of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer for vinyl papers; for older wallpapers and papers with metallic as part of the pattern use Resene Sureseal. December 2014
Q. We have just bought a house and the previous owners have stripped the rimu door frames and window frames and skirting and architraves back to rimu then oiled them with a Danska Teak Oil. We want to paint over them and go back to a white colour. We have heard that there can be issues with this. Is there any process we can do to be able to paint over these? A. The Danska Teak Oil should have dried to a hard film. If there is mould growth present then treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer following the label directions, sand with 220 grit sandpaper, dust off then prime with Resene Wood Primer. Apply an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat then you can apply two coats of either a solvent or waterborne topcoat. December 2014
Q. I am looking to restore my pop top caravan. What paint should I use on the fibreglass top and the aluminium siding (painted)? Looking for a high quality finish, hardwearing, high shine and preferably a one pot paint. A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions, sand painted surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper and dust off. Apply a prime coat of Resene Armourcote 221 primer and finish with two coats of a Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoat. December 2014
Q. We want to paint the kitchen cabinets in our kitchen white. The cabinets are a shiny, grey laminate I think. What would be the best way to tackle this? Sanding, then two coats of primer and topcoat? Maybe a sealer? A. Painting will not reproduce the wear and hardness features of the current laminate. However the following paint system can be used to achieve a colour change; clean down the surface with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions. Apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure for 48 hours before overcoating. Note the sealer is not designed to achieve opacity or build. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel such as Resene Lustacryl. It's best to apply all coats with a roller as brushing will always give some brush marking. The system will take a minimum of 5-7 days to begin to harden and develop ultimate adhesion. December 2014
Q. I have rimu window frames. I have always used totara. What do I use to prime it? A. We recommend using Resene Wood Primer for priming Rimu. For Totara and Matai you must use the Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat as these native timbers contain anti-oxidants that prevent the drying of primers such as Resene Wood Primer. December 2014
Q. Is it correct that if you use a darker colour paint, a modern day shade on weatherboards, native timbers, that it is more liable to warp the timbers due to heat attraction? A. Dark colours result in higher surface temperatures and can cause dimensional changes in timber claddings. Application of Resene CoolColour™ paint increases the total solar reflection and hence can assist in but not eliminate the potential for dimensional changes. Resene CoolColours do not make the painted surface cool to touch but reflect more heat than the same colour made using non cool technology. December 2014
Q. The stain on my house is deteriorating and needs maintenance. Also, a number of weatherboards show signs of cupping. If I re-coat with Resene Woodsman stain, what preparation is required to remove the old finish that is breaking down? Would it be practical to switch to a penetrating stain such as Wood-X? What surface preparation would be required? A. Scrub down using Resene Timber and Deck Wash following label instructions. Wood X is based on a mineral oil and does not match Resene colours. If you converted to Wood X you will be committed to this stain type for future maintenance as mineral oil based stains can only be over coated with the same stain type. Once cupping/warping has developed it cannot be reversed. December 2014
Q. Can you please advise me how I should remove the flaking paint off my concrete? A scraper (this hasn't worked well in the past), paint stripper or something else? A. Scraping paint from concrete is not easy unless the paint is poorly adhered. Paint stripper would be the way to go unless you can arrange for a commercial operator who can diamond grind the surface. December 2014
Q. I have varnished wooden internal doors and would love to put a whitewash stain or a lighter wood stain on them. Would a stain work or am I best to paint them? What's the best way to remove the varnish? A. If you want to stain the doors then the varnish will have to be completely removed using a paint stripper. Clean the doors down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner paying particular attention to areas around door knobs where hand contact has occurred. You can apply Resene Colorwood Whitewash, after sanding the varnish, to give a whitewash effect. To paint apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, allow to cure for 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. With the latter paint system you may get brush marking if brush application is used so we suggest rolling, assuming the doors are smooth. December 2014
Q. I am painting the interior of a playcentre and walls/trims are about 220 square metres. Would Resene Zylone Sheen, which comes in pails, be the alternative to Resene Lustacryl, which doesn't come in pails? What is the difference between the two? The colour is going to be off white, and walls and woodwork all the same colour. It is an old building. A. Resene Lustacryl is a waterborne enamel and as a result is much tougher than Resene Zylone Sheen, which is formulated on a conventional acrylic resin. Waterborne enamel paints have better wear resistance. Resene ClinicalCote is the other product that you may look to use for this application and this is available in a 10 litre pail. December 2014

Q. I have purchased an aluminum front door and don't like the colour. Am I able to paint it? A. Yes, the aluminium is probably powdercoated. Ensure the surface is clean then prime with Resene Vinyl Etch primer followed by two coats of a Resene Uracryl 400 Series topcoat. December 2014
Q. My kitchen cupboard doors are powder coated Customwood. Am I able to paint over these to change the colour? If so, what do I have to do to prepare and which paint do I use? A. Sand using 180 grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system, dust off and prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. December 2014
Q. I wish to paint cleaned aluminium with Resene Uracryl 403. Can I apply Resene Uracryl 403 direct or should I use Resene Vinyl Etch or Resene Armourcote 221 first? A. Recommend priming with Resene Armourcote 221. December 2014
Q. I want to paint over my concrete porch but it was coated in an epoxy resin with paint chips. I have seen it in the past on sport club's shower floors. My question is do I need to seal it and with what before I paint over it? A. Clean the surface using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash then sand with 180 grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key for the new paint, dust off and prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. December 2014
Q. How long would a 1L pot of Resene Sun Defier last. Is there an expiry? I bought it a few years ago and need to seal something but am unsure whether it would still be any good? A. Depends upon storage conditions. Only way is to open and check the odour of the liquid. If it smells like unwashed sports socks then there is bacterial contamination and the product should be discarded. December 2014
Q. We have a 3 year old house near the beach, with a quite a large concrete block and timber fence, which was painted when new with Resene Lumbersider. There are a number of white 'bleed through' patches now on some of the concrete blocks. What should I seal the bleed through areas with please before I repaint again? A. The white marking you are seeing is more than likely efflorescence from the block pointing. These areas will need to be power wire brushed and sealed with Resene Sureseal before recoating. December 2014
Q. We are owner builders and had new plaster put up about five years ago. We have just hired painters to paint the house. They quoted for an undercoat and two coats of paint. They have currently finished the ceiling and the other day they called us and said that because the plaster is so old that it has turned yellow in some areas, so they need to put another coat of paint and also they had to add some 'stain remover' to the paint, in order for the yellow not to show through. Is this correct? A. If new plasterboard is not painted it can develop a yellow colour over time and this will bleed through a waterborne paint system. In this situation our recommendation is to apply Resene Sureseal as the sealer prior to application of the acrylic top coats. Given that the paint system has been applied you can seal off the migration of the yellow stain using Resene Sureseal or Resene StainLock before reapplying the acrylic topcoats. December 2014
Q. I have Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom to paint my ceiling in the bathroom. How long after the final coat should I wait till we start using the shower? A. Maintain good ventilation and warmth for at least two days, the longer the better. December 2014
Q. My front (concrete) steps are in disrepair. Please advise the best solutions for prepping and painting these heavy duty steps. A. The best way would be to remove the existing paint system then prime with Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. December 2014
Q. Please advise on stain availability for macrocarpa outdoor furniture. I've tried your kwila stain and two coats aren't dark enough. Will a third coat make any difference? Is there an alternative? A. While the application of a third coat would likely increase the colour depth it will not be an advantage as the timber will not be able to absorb more stain. In fact the stain sitting on the surface will erode away quite quickly. You could use a darker colour in Resene Woodsman wood oil stain if you want to darken the colour of the Resene Kwila Decking Stain as these products are compatible. December 2014
Q. I painted all my living room walls and ceilings with Resene Zylone 20 Pearl Lusta several years ago. I have now patched and painted part of one wall with Resene Zylone Sheen. It has a definite sheen and does not match the original matt surface. Do you have a paint that will match the original or can the Resene Zylone Sheen be matted? A. Resene Zylone 20 was a flat finish whereas Resene Zylone Sheen is a higher gloss low sheen level. Resene SpaceCote Flat is now the only interior waterborne wall paint we sell in a flat finish but we cannot guarantee that both products have exactly matching gloss and side sheen. December 2014
Q. I wish to paint the walls and ceilings in my American RV. The walls and ceiling are done with vinyl covered board. What preparation is needed before I paint with the colours of my choice? A. We would treat this as painting vinyl wallpaper so you need to apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer first. Please ensure you wear a face mask fitted with an organic cartridge if using the product in a confined space. It is best applied by roller and discard the roller sleeve after you have finished. December 2014
Q. We have an exposed ceiling with rafters and a tongue and grooved ceiling, which is varnished wood. We want to paint this. What can you recommend to seal the wood and then to paint over (in white)? A. Apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as the adhesion primer to the varnished surfaces then you can apply two coats of any Resene interior wall or ceiling paint. December 2014
Q. What primer and paint should I use on a Hibond concrete floor underside to protect in a sea spray zone? It has been up for around a year. A. Water wash/blast to remove entrained salts, allow to dry then apply at least three rolled coats of Resene Armourcote 510 high solids epoxy. December 2014
Q. Looking for advice on painting concrete floor to protect it from the impact of silage juices in a cow barn. A. Silage juices contain lactic acid, which is the acid that probably causes the degradation of the concrete. A two pack polyurethane such as Resene Imperite 413 would give the best resistance. The topcoat would need to be applied over an epoxy basecoat such as Resene Armourcote 510. Concrete would need to be prepared by diamond grinding. The prep required and application of the paint system would require a specialist applicator. Also the floor finish would not be slip resistant. December 2014
Q. Exterior paint (new products) with correct preparation/undercoats on weatherboard/LINEA® - how often would I have to repaint these surfaces? House is situated 20kms inland. A. Depends upon gloss level but typically a maintenance coat every 7-10 years. December 2014
Q. I am currently doing a renovation of a high school and was wondering what are the best paints to specify for existing radiators, a clear finish for doors and frames and a non clear finish for doors and frames. A. For existing radiators - sand existing enamel paint finish to remove any corrosion products and to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system and spot prime any corroded areas with Resene Rust-Arrest then apply two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. Clear finish to go on doors and frames: Resene Qristal Polyurethane Non clear finish for doors and frames: Traditional solventborne enamel such as Resene Super Gloss or Resene Lusta-Glo. December 2014
Q. Should you gap the underside of LINEA® weatherboards before painting them? A. I assume that you mean gap fill. To the best of my understanding there is no hard and fast rules regarding using gap fillers with LINEA® construction but I suggest that you should check first with James Hardie who make this product. If there is any board movement then the gap filler may rupture, the darker the colour the higher the possibility. Resene CoolColour™ technology will reduce the possibility but not eliminate the potential for changes due to temperature. December 2014
Q. We have a house built in the late sixties and we would like to know what primer and topcoat to use on the external window frames, sashes etc. The window frames are cedar and sills are rimu. A. After stripping prime both timbers with Resene Wood Primer, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat as the undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Enamacryl or Resene Lustacryl. December 2014
Q. Can I paint over an oil based paint using a waterbased paint? How do I determine if it is oil based in the first instance? A. The meths test is the easiest way to determine if it is a waterborne paint. Wipe areas down to remove any dirt and chalking. Wet a cloth with meths and quickly transfer to the painted surface and rub. If the paint is removed or becomes tacky then it is safe to assume that is a waterborne paint. You can apply Resene waterborne paints over old sound enamel paint when repainting weatherboards. Wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, and with 180 grit sandpaper, dust off and then apply two coats of Resene topcoat. Suggest that you contact your nearest Resene ColorShop if there are areas of flaking paint. December 2014
Q. What is the most suitable polyurethane for a kauri kitchen bench after sanding? It is a highly used old farmhouse kitchen. There is a butler sink and tiles in the area. Just an old farmhouse kitchen. A. We recommend Resene Qristal Clear polyurethanes. January 2015
Q. What do you recommend I use to get nicotine stains off a ceiling tile? A. These stains cannot be removed; standard practice is to apply a stain sealer such as Resene Sureseal or Resene StainLock to the stains then repaint. January 2015
Q. If we paint timber weatherboards black (or close to it) using Resene CoolColour what is the light reflectance value? Will it comply with the 40% or greater? A. There is no difference in the LRV of a colour made from Resene CoolColour™ or non CoolColour pigments. CoolColours have higher TSR (Total Solar Reflectance Value). Resene CoolColours reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-CoolColour pigments. January 2015
Q. I am making Cape Cod furniture chairs from bare standard pine fence palings and wish to know the best way to prepare and paint them. I would prefer to use a water based product if possible. A. Assuming the pine is new then prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and topcoat with two coats of Resene Lumbersider. January 2015
Q. Is there a special paint I can put on the tin roof of my sleepout to deflect the heat? The roof is low so temperatures are very high in summer. A. Resene CoolColours increase the heat reflected for a given colour but the amount does vary with the colour. For maximum heat reflection use white. January 2015
Q. Do you have any advice on how to remove 'creeper' type plant growth on blockwork, before I paint it? A. Ensure the creeper is cut at ground level, leave to die off until the leaves have fallen, then from experience you can pull off most of the dry stems. However there may be residual attachments remaining on the wall. These can removed by power wire brushing taking care not to damage the blockwork. January 2015
Q. What sealing system and paint is designed for raw mdf for cabinet doors? I want to seal the edges well. A. Use Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. January 2015
Q. After sanding rimu floorboards what products should be used for varnishing? A. Resene Qristal Clear solventborne varnishes. January 2015
Q. I have a children's bed made from mdf that I need to seal and paint white. What products are suitable for this? A. Prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. January 2015
Q. What paint would be best over a Suntuff Polycarbonate roofing system? We would like to block out some excess light on a school veranda. A. You can use any Resene exterior acrylic topcoat (two coats) applied to the clean substrate. However this will give total UV block. We have no semi-transparent product for this application. January 2015
Q. Do you need to seal all Anaglypta and Paint-on with Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer before applying two topcoats? A. No you don't – you can apply the two waterborne topcoats direct. January 2015
Q. I have rimu window frames inside and out. What basecoat can I use to stop the paint from lifting? Water based paint is currently being used. A. We would recommend using Resene Wood Primer as the primer to the bare rimu. January 2015
Q. I am getting pinholing on the coat of paint I am applying. A. Pinholing occurs if the substrate is very porous or application is being done using the wrong roller sleeve. The paint should not show obvious pinholes. January 2015
Q. I have a Lockwood house and the eaves have gone very golden looking. A. The colour will be due to the ageing of the polyurethane clear that was originally applied to the eaves. January 2015
Q. Can I paint oil based paint over water based and water based over oil based? A. Yes as long as the existing paint work is sound and prepared appropriately and a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat is used before applying either solventborne or waterborne topcoats. January 2015
Q. Does metallic paint interfere with cellphone reception? A. There is no paint that will block cell phone signals but I am aware that aluminium foil used as ceiling linings can interfere with cell phone reception. We have not heard of any cellphone reception issues with our metallic paints. January 2015
Q. We sanded and primed our wooden deck before painting. We were given 20L of Resene Hi-Glo gloss exterior paint (Permanent Green) so used this. We have only applied one topcoat so far as where the paint is exposed to the hot sun it is sticky. No actual paint comes off when touched or walked on. As soon as the area is out of the sun and cools it isn't sticky. What can we do to fix this please? A. All acrylic paints are thermoplastic - that is they soften at certain temperatures. Permanent Green is a dark colour and the paint surface will become very hot in direct sunshine and this causes the paint to soften and become tacky/sticky. Resene Hi-Glo is for walls and roofs not for traffic areas such as decks. The stickiness is most noticeable with gloss acrylics and reduces as the gloss level decreases. The paint may harden with rain washing but we cannot guarantee that it will become hard when exposed to direct sun. You really will need to overcoat with a lower gloss acrylic such as Resene Lumbersider and use the Resene Resene CoolColour™ formulation of the colour if available to reduce heat absorption. January 2015
Q. What paint can I use to paint laminate kitchen cabinets? Needs to be durable/washable and I suppose not too easily stained. Does Resene have a paint for this? A. Clean down with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours. The primer is not designed to give film build or opacity. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. The last two paints are best applied by roller to avoid brush marking on the finish. January 2015
Q. We have just installed a new v-groove pine plywood ceiling. We wanted a rimu or walnut colour so we used an oil based stain. This created many blotches and marks of uneven stain (a water based one had similar effects). A. The differential stain colour is due to either differential absorption of the stain into the ply or surface defects in the ply sheets. The ply may have been filled using a filler. I am not aware of any sealer that can be used pre staining. Resene has the Resene Colorwood Enhance additives which can be added to Resene Aquaclear to increase the depth of colour. This can be used over a stained finish. January 2015
Q. I have a natural anodised aluminium flashing that separates weatherboards from painted Shadowclad® above. I would like to paint this flashing to match the weatherboards which are currently panted in Resene Sonyx 101 Double Concrete. What do I need to use or how do I need to prepare it to get the paint to stick to it? A. Wash down the aluminium using Resene Roof and Metal Wash following the label directions. Apply a prime coat of Resene Galvo-Prime followed by two coats of the Resene Sonyx 101. January 2015
Q. Is there a deck paint which will go over a deck which has been painted with a linseed and turps mix? This surface has remained sticky and we have scraped a lot of it off but some still remains. A. To reduce the stickiness you could wipe the surface with a rag and Resene Thinner No.2, with many changes of the rag. Leave the rags in an open space and allow the solvent to evaporate. The rags containing the oil residue can be flammable. January 2015
Q. I want to paint new Ikea laminate (a book shelf) and according to your Paint Systems brochure I need no primer. However, I have just begun rolling and am finding that the paint is spreading, and not absorbing at all. Do I need to sand back the surface, or could a primer fix my problem? A. If the Ikea indeed does have a laminate surface as opposed to bare wood then it will need to be primed using Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours with good ventilation. The Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is an adhesion primer and not designed to achieve film build or opacity. After curing apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat sand then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. January 2015
Q. I am looking to paint a geometric pattern over some plywood and was wondering what should be painted on first – the paint or the polyurethane? A. Apply a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before applying the pigmented geometric paint pattern. January 2015
Q. I am thinking of using Resene Qristal Clear polyurethane on a new coffee table top. Will this mark with a hot coffee cup placed on it? I want to produce a surface that will be extremely hard wearing and won't leave a ring from a cup of coffee on it. A. If you are happy with a full gloss, we recommend Resene Polythane. January 2015
Q. I am using your Resene Uracryl 802 acrylic system and spraying it onto kitchen cupboards. They have been sealed and undercoated using Resene recommended products. After having sprayed two topcoats the finish looks dry in places. The coats went on beautifully. Am using a 1.4 fluid needle gti automotive spray gun. What am I doing wrong? Perhaps a larger fluid needle and less water thinning? A. I suspect the problem is dry spray, try thinning a little more with water. Remember to take care not to overbuild the product as this can cause gassing within the wet film. January 2015
Q. I am hoping to get a very flat, matt, velvety finish on my walls but so far as I know you do not do a matte wall paint? Could you let me know if there are any other options here or if low sheen is the closest I can get to a matte finish? A. We do have a matt (flat) finish, Resene SpaceCote Flat. January 2015
Q. I have sanded down a section of cork tiles at the entrance that are a golden oak colour in order to remove stud marks. This has left me with tiles of a very different colour (unevenly light and quite dark - natural but not golden oak). Is there any golden oak colorant I could use with the clear varnish or is there any other solution to my problem other than a large mat? A. It is difficult to match varnish colours when a small area is sanded back to bare substrate and then re clear coated. The usual reason for the colour change is that the varnish originally used may have been a solventborne product and these yellow with age and exposure to light. The Resene Colorwood Enhance additives are the only way we would suggest to get any match of old and new. Sorry but I am not aware of any procedure that you could now use to achieve the match, other than sanding down the remaining floor area and then using the Resene Colorwood Enhance approach. January 2015
Q. I am currently in the process of renovating an old, large, high ceiling kitchen. The walls are Seratone®. I just wanted to know if it was possible to just paint over it due to limited budget. A. Clean down the walls using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, leave to cure for 48 hours ensuring good ventilation then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. The system will take up to five days to develop good adhesion. January 2015
Q. I have cork tiles I wish to paint over in a high traffic area. These tiles have a finish on them. My question is can I put a sealer over and then paint on top? Will it chip or wear? I'd prefer not to sand if possible. A. Only recommendation would be to sand the existing paint finish to provide a mechanical key for the new paint and then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Walk-on. January 2015
Q. I'm doing the painting on our renovation and soon have to paint our large bedroom (4m x 4.5m). I'm not a pro and based on what I've researched everyone does small areas at a time. However I'm concerned they will dry by the time I get to do the next row and therefore won't blend correctly. Is there some technique or product I can use so that the edge remains wet and I can get a good finish without seeing the joins? A. Resene Hot Weather Additive can be used to extend the open time (wet edge) of Resene acrylic paints. January 2015
Q. How do I remove dried waterbased paint spots from Firth pavers? A. If the paint has dried hard then complete removal may be difficult. Suggest you try to waterblast the pavers. January 2015
Q. We are planning on repainting our garage roof this weekend. With the weather we have been having, just wondered if it is ok to paint on hotter days? Is there a maximum temp. for optimum results? Should painting be done as the day cools down? A. A good guide to follow is if you can stand on the roof in bare feet then the roof can be painted. January 2015
Q. I am looking to repaint my metal garage door. Can I use Resene Galvo One galvanised iron primer to prime bare metal areas and can I then topcoat with Resene Hi-Glo gloss acrylic. A. Yes you can use Resene Galvo One or Resene GP Metal Primer to prime prepared bare galvanised areas then apply two coats of Resene Hi-Glo. January 2015
Q. I want to make a sign for my daughter's room. I have read that you can transfer laser printed material to wood using xylol. As I have already painted the sign with a base of your gloss (Resene Kermit) will the xylol act as a solvent to the paint too and ruin the effect? A. If you have used a waterborne paint, yes. If the paint was a solvent borne enamel then depending upon the state of cure, the longer the cure the less likely it will be that xylol will affect the paint. January 2015
Q. I am wanting a clear coat to protect a mosaic. A. You could use Resene Concrete Clear. You will need at least 3 coats and use the gloss as the first coat. For exterior use I would use either 3 coats of gloss or 1 coat of gloss and 2 coats of satin. January 2015
Q. I am busy painting and noticed the flies are constantly attracted to the fresh paintwork. They just love it which is really annoying to say the least with fresh paint! A. The same attraction occurs with all waterborne paints. There are a number of theories regarding the attractant(s) in the wet paint but no definitive component has yet been established. One theory is that small midge flies are attracted to wet paint due to the mistaken identification of a shiny wet paint surface as being water. Others include amine type additives that are present in small quantities being the attractant. Another is that there is a layer just above the wet paint that is high in humidity. January 2015
Q. I have doors painted in Resene Zylone Sheen and am wondering if I can paint Resene Lustacryl over it. If so does it just need a light sand and 1 or 2 coats? The colour is the same. A. Yes but suggest that the existing paint is cleaned down (pay particular attention to areas of regular hand contact) using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. Apply an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat before applying the Resene Lustacryl. January 2015
Q. I want to paint over plain concrete block on an interior wall. What should I use to seal it and also what paint? A. The following system can be used as long as the exterior face of the wall is weathertight. Ensure the blockwork is clean and free from loose surface material then apply a coat of Resene Concrete Primer and finish with two coats of either Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. January 2015
Q. Do you supply an oil or polyurethane which can be mixed with sand/grit for an internal timber stair? A. We have no additive to increase the slip resistance of clear coatings. The addition of standard anti slip materials to clears results in an unacceptable look as the additives are easily seen in the clear film and detract from the aesthetics. January 2015
Q. My flashings on the leading edges are showing signs of red rust. What is the best treatment for these - strip back and apply Resene Rust-Arrest then topcoat or use one of your galv products? A. Assume that the flashings were originally galvanised. The edge corrosion is more than likely due to cutting of the flashing detail which provides no zinc protection to the edge. Corrosion could also be occurring underneath the edge due to accumulation of salts and this is not easy to resolve. Our best recommendation for accessible areas is to wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash following the label directions then apply two coats of Resene GP Metal Primer and try to ensure edge coating. You will need to overcoat the primer so best to prime the remaining sections with Resene GP Metal Primer and then finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. January 2015
Q. We have just replaced the plasterboard in our kitchen and are about to paint it. What paint system should we use? We have been told to use Resene Sureseal as the undercoat and Resene SpaceCote Kitchen & Bathroom for the wall. Is that correct? How about the ceiling? A. Yes apply Resene Sureseal to the stopped GIB® then apply the two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. You can use the same paint for finishing ceilings or use Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom. January 2015
Q. I wish to use Resene Lustacryl on cupboard doors. They are currently coated in your solventborne satin finish enamel paint. Can I go directly over it or do I need to use a waterbased undercoat? A. Ensure the cupboard doors are cleaned down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and then thoroughly sand the existing enamel, dust off and apply an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with the two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. January 2015
Q. I need to repaint over a stipple finish on kitchen cupboards. Need a more streamlined finish. A. Degrease using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and sand thoroughly to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. At this time of the year add Resene Hot Weather Additive to maintain a wet edge and to minimise brushmarking. January 2015
Q. I have timber framed bi-fold doors and windows so half exposed to the exterior and half interior. The door/window manufacturer recommends oil based paint. I am looking for a semi-gloss white (Resene Alabaster or equivalent) oil based product that is suitable for exterior and interior surfaces. A. I can understand why door manufacturers would recommend oil based priming and undercoating systems but solventborne semi-gloss enamels chalk rapidly upon exposure to the weather and UV. We recommend Resene Lustacryl for exterior use if a semi-gloss finish is require. Resene Lustacryl is a water borne enamel. It can be used as the finish coats over oil based priming systems. January 2015
Q. I have a timber window frame that is partially in the shower area and was wondering what is the best way to protect the wood with a paint that won't peel off. I need to remove the current paint from the frame. A. Assuming that the timber is pine, strip the existing paint system and allow the timber to thoroughly dry out. Then apply a coat of Resene TimberLock, wipe excess from the surface and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply the following; Resene Wood Primer, Resene Enamel Undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. This system will protect timber that has been repainted but cannot protect against water ingress form areas that are inaccessible for repainting. January 2015
Q. I have just repainted my roof with Resene. I collect drinking water off the roof. How much rain (in mls) do you need before the downpipes can be reconnected to collect water again? A. The statement we make is as follows: We have not attempted to relate the amount of rainfall to the time required for disconnection. The wetting agents are considered nontoxic but depending upon the concentration present in the water tank result in the water being foamy or tainted when consumed. January 2015
Q. I live near the sea and am looking to paint the outside of my house. I would like to understand what type of paint is best and how many coats of paint should be applied for a lasting finish. This is on the basis that an undercoat is applied. A. Scrub surfaces down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label instructions. Sand peeling areas back to a sound edge. If the timber has greyed then sand to restore the timber colour. Then prime bare timber with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101. We recommend using the Resene CoolColour™ version of the topcoat colour if you decide to use a dark colour. Application of dark colours over an old paint system which has many layers of paint may cause one of the older layers to fail adhesively. January 2015
Q. Do Resene have a melamine paint? I need to touch up some old kitchen joinery. A. The melamine finish is baked not painted on. We recommend using Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as the adhesion primer to bare laminate, leave to cure for 48 hours then apply Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. However this system does not replicate the gloss level or the toughness of the original laminate. January 2015
Q. Regarding CoolColours. I want to paint a new home but due to the materials used for the exterior plaster I am restricted to a LRV of 45. I would quite like to use the colour Resene Rockbottom which has a LRV of 42. Does the LRV change if you use the colour as a CoolColour? And if so is there a different system for applying the CoolColour? A. There is no difference in the LRV of cool and non-cool versions of the same colour. The difference is in TSR (total solar reflectance) - the TSR of a Resene CoolColour™ is higher for the CoolColour version as they reflect more heat. We have developed a method of using the TSR of CoolColour and non-CoolColours to overcome some LRV restrictions. January 2015
Q. Do we need to put a sealer over wallpaper prior to painting in our colour of choice and if so what product do you recommend? A. This is a yes/no answer. If you are painting vinyl wallpaper then most likely yes, as these papers contain a material known as a plasticiser and when painted with acrylic wall paints the plasticiser can migrate into the paint film and the dry paint retains a surface tack. This can be overcome by sealing the wallpaper with Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer prior to application of the acrylic wall paint. You can test to determine if the sealer is required: paint a small area of paper with testpot paint and leave for 48 hours then check the paint to see if there is a surface tack - if not then no sealer should be required. If the wallpaper has a metallic finish then seal with Resene Sureseal before applying the acrylic wall paint. January 2015

Q. What is the latest thinking on acrylic versus alkyd undercoats for painting native timber weatherboards? The painter I have got coming to paint my house says that acrylic is the way to go, but the painter doing the next door house says that alkyd will last longer. My house is 90 years old and hasn't been painted for 30 years I suspect. The paint on the sunny side is just falling off and the weatherboards are showing the effects. A. Oil based primers will not cure when applied to native timbers such as Matai and Totara. For these timbers our recommended primer is Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. When painting older properties with many previous applications of paint there will at some stage be a failure of an underlying paint layer due to stress. This is made worse when a colour change from a pale to a dark colour is made. January 2015

Q. A painter cleaned mould from a pergola over a swimming pool with a strong chlorine solution and then waterblasted the white painted timbers (acrylic paint). Several litres of milky white residues were spilled into the pool water. Do I have a problem with toxicity to adults or children? A. Traditional chlorine tablets used for treating pool water are based on the similar active that is in bleach solutions. The byproduct of the bleaching process is sodium chloride so no issues there. I assume that the white material is chalking from the white paint, again the white chalk will mostly be titanium dioxide and this should pose no risk. In my experience this should be removed by the pool filtration system. January 2015

Q. We have a whiteboard finish and the pen isn't wiping off well. A. Removal of dry ink can be difficult especially if there is a texture on the wall. We recommend application of 2 coats of Resene Write-On Wall Paint to create a whiteboard effect. Always use good quality whiteboard pens recommended for the whiteboard product you have used, as cheaper pens tend to leave residues. To remove all residues wipe with meths and a cloth. January 2015

Q. How long should I expect exterior paint to last before repainting? A. A repaint should only be required after there is obvious surface chalking. The repaint time depends upon gloss level of the paint and elevation as gloss acrylic paints have a longer timer to repaint than a lower sheen paint given the same exposure. The darker the colour the more obvious chalking is due to the contrast of the surface chalk. On average a gloss paint will require a maintenance coat after 8-10 years and a low sheen around 5 years given similar exposures. However these are average conditions and other factors can contribute to early chalking. If there is chalking then scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following the label instructions to remove the surface chalk and the original colour will return. If not then the whiteness you are seeing is not occurring as a result of the paint chalking. In any event the scrub down with the cleaner is recommended before repainting. January 2015

Q. I have some weatherboards that I am about to repaint. In places that have a gum type substance which has seeped through. When I originally painted the boards they were not undercoated but topcoated over a light sanding of the original red factory weatherboard undercoat and I suspect this may be the problem. Is my best solution scraping off the gum substance, sanding and then spot priming/undercoating the affected areas? Am I able to use Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat or am I better off to use Resene Wood Primer to ensure the gum does not reappear? A. Finger jointed weatherboards only address the presence of knots and not resin pockets. You are correct that the sticky gum like material is resin bleed from the timber and although darker colours exacerbate the bleed the appearance of resin can still occur with a white topcoat. Resene Wood Primer is definitely a better block for resin bleed than Resene Quick Dry, and suggest that you apply two coats to prepared (as you have described) areas after removal of the resin exudate. This should work but depending upon the reservoir of resin in the timber there still may be resin bleed occurring. January 2015

Q. What would we use to paint a COLORSTEEL® roof at the beach? Steel is still in good condition but has been renailed and a plumber advised we should repaint it. A. Wash down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash following label directions then you can use either Resene Hi-Glo (gloss) or Resene Summit Roof (satin). January 2015

Q. I painted my light cream colour ceiling with a white latex primer and before the primer dried I paint sprayed it with white latex paint. Is that ok to do? A. Resene always recommends that primers/sealers/undercoats are allowed to dry for the recommended time before topcoating. January 2015

Q. In regards of painting exterior cedar, we have been told the timber continually omits a gas, which causes blistering when painted. Could you please advise us on the best way to maintain exterior cedar? A. Not something that we would say can occur; some resinous timbers, such as pine, contain resin pockets that can come through the paint film and deposit on the surface but have seen no reports of gas being continually emitted from timber. Is the cedar painted in a solid paint finish and if so where there are blisters what is on the back of the blister and what is beneath where the blister was removed? That will help identify the issue. January 2015

Q. Can you provide some advice on how to remove Resene Aquapel from a GRC outdoor table. So far we've tried Jif and water, however this isn't particularly effective. A. Sorry nothing that we have looked at will remove the cured Resene Aquapel. The Resene Aquapel undergoes a chemical reaction with the substrate and is locked into the substrate. January 2015

Q. Can you recommend a product that will clean a hardwood deck so that it is suitable for sealing? It has been outside for more than 10 years. A. It's a two stage process, apply Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and following label instructions, then follow with Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted and used to label directions. January 2015

Q. What can l treat weathered Canadian exterior ply with? lt is in bad condition on the north and west walls. l am not able to stain it every year and want a product that will waterproof it - preferably a plastic paint. A. If the ply has never been painted then application of a solid paint finish may be achievable. I know that you do not want to restain on a regular basis but given the situation this would be my best advice as Resene stains can be applied over weathered timbers with minimal preparation. January 2015

Q. What product would I use that is clear coated with a satin finish to go over pine painted in waterbased acrylic? A. Use Resene Aquaclear. January 2015

Q. I have a 15 month old deck and 12 month old fence made of pine timber. I want to oil/stain these and they have a faded a bit. But otherwise clean and in good condition. Do I need to pretreat these before staining/oiling? Would it come out with the timber colours? A. You can apply Resene Woodsman Wood oil stains direct to the pine decking and fence. If you want a waterborne option then use Resene Waterborne Woodsman for the fence and Resene Woodsman Decking Stain for the deck. January 2015

Q. A portal that we have designed for a home next to the sea will not be galvanised in the factory as there will be some welding on site. What kind of treatment can you recommend please? A. Steel in this situation must be either hot dipped galvanised or factory primed with a zinc rich primer if any degree of long term corrosion is required. January 2015

Q. Do you have a paint system suitable for H3 pine TG&V sarking in a shower lining situation? I guess not a lot different to exterior cladding, except warm water and the room will have mechanical ventilation etc. A. The only possible system would be a traditional solventborne enamel system. Prime with Resene Wood Primer, follow with a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. January 2015

Q. My COLORSTEEL® roof has in the past been painted a light moss green colour. This is now the existing colour. I would like to paint it Resene CoolColour Element. A staff member told me the roof needs to be painted white before it is painted with CC Element. My painter however has said that as the roof is already a somewhat light colour that painting the roof white first is unnecessary. Please can you confirm which is correct? A. ReseneC RoolColours will reflect more heat than the same colour applied using non CoolColour technology. The colour Resene Element is nearly black. A white or Resene Galvo-Prime (has CoolColour properties) will give the maximum heat reflection to the CoolColour painted surface. When we test cool colours we always apply the two coats of topcoat over a white basecoat. You definitely need two coats of CoolColour topcoat and the white or Resene Galvo-Prime undercoat is an option, but for black colours a white basecoat is recommended. January 2015

Q. We are working 8am-2pm each day and need a paint that will cover large, glass windows in the office, to cut down on glare etc, that we can simply scrap off when we leave. What do you recommend? A. We have no strippable coating but Resene Hi-Glo would be the easiest to remove by scraping. January 2015

Q. We have some wooden beams in our house that were stained. We had the ceiling they are in sprayed with undercoat for ease - the beams are therefore now white. Are we able to stain brown again over this undercoat or will we have to paint them? A. The beams will now have to be painted in a solid colour. January 2015

Q. I have very old brickwork with lime mortar with lime coming through the paint. Will Resene Limelock fix this? A. Efflorescence is not lime but a reaction of soluble materials carried to the surface by water moving through the structure. Resene Sureseal would be the best product to use after wire brushing the efflorescence to remove as much as possible. January 2015

Q. I have been told that Resene makes or made a special paint for Totara. Is this correct and is it still available? And will it also stick to Matai? I have a mix of both timbers. A. Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat is the primer for Totara and Matai. January 2015

Q. How can I stop rust bleed on the surface of concrete blocks – it appears to be coming from the reinforcing? Have applied two coats of Resene Sureseal but rust spots are still appearing. A. It appears as if there was insufficient concrete cover over the reinforcing and water and salts are getting to the reinforcing. Rust stains can be removed by washing with a 5% solution of oxalic then waterblasting the surface to remove loose surface material and allow to dry. Note the chemical is toxic; in fact the same chemical is present in rhubarb leaves. After removal of the rust stains apply a coat of Resene Limelock and then multiple coats of Resene Thixalon 5 (Resene X-400) to build up a barrier membrane. January 2015

Q. Just wondering what non toxic paint would be suitable for painting a baby's cot? A. Sand the painted surfaces to provide a mechanical key for the new paint system. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Allow to cure for two weeks with good ventilation then wipe the newly painted surface down with water and detergent to remove any water soluble material that may be present. Both products are Environmental Choice approved. January 2015

Q. I have plaster cladding (EIFS Polystyrene). What sort of paint you recommend for it and what is the fashion colour and LRV requirement? A. If there is no weathertight issues then you can use any Resene exterior acrylic paint such as Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) or Resene Lumbersider (low sheen). The other option is Resene X-200 high build membrane. The cladding system should be clean and sound and free of joint cracking. Any restriction on LRV is made by the cladding supplier so if you know where the EIFS system was sourced from you will need to ask this question of them. January 2015

Q. I will be painting our villa with very wide wooden weatherboards (200mm) using Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss. Is the best way to do this still with a wide paint brush or using a roller? I have noticed painters now using a roller on weatherboards, which never used to be the case. A. Rolling can be used for repainting, however you will still need to use a brush to paint the underside of the weatherboard overlaps or if the weatherboard is of the rusticated design for painting the scalloped sections. I would not use the small nook and cranny rollers for this as in my experience these rollers do not apply the same quantity of wet paint per application as standard roller sleeves. Painters are moving to rolling or spray application as these methods allow the paint to be applied in a shorter time frame. You still need to do two coats when rolling. There are small sized sleeves that are the same roller fabric as the longer sleeves. Always ensure that the correct sleeve is used. For Resene Sonyx 101 this is the Resene No.1 sleeve. January 2015

Q. The white paint I am using I think should cover in two coats but took three. Why is that? A. Coverage can be influenced by the paint rheology (thickness), Resene has always adopted the formulation philosophy of trying to deliver to our customers as brushmark free finish as possible without compromising other application features. The type of thickeners we use to achieve this can lead to over extension of the wet paint, which will reduce coverage per coat. Brushmarking is most obvious with full gloss paints. The gloss level of paints can vary within a standard range – e.g. what Resene calls a gloss finish is generally higher gloss than many other manufacturers. The lower the sheen the more the brushmarks are hidden. When you're painting it is always good to make sure you keep an eye on the spreading rate. All our paint is tested on black and white cards to ensure two coat coverage in white. Even after 1 coat the original colour is mostly covered by most of our products and it is easily obliterated after two coats. If it is spread too thinly then you won't get the normal coverage. Or if thinner or water is added to the paint that will also reduce the coverage. We generally recommend for large painting projects that you estimate the amount of paint you should be using for each area to make sure the coverage is right. E.g. if you coat 24 square metres in 1 coat you should use around 2 litres of paint. If you find that you are using less then you will need to apply it thicker. Depending on technique some people spread the paint further than others. January 2015
