Q. How do I get wood/BBQ coal smoke stains off the front of our outside fireplace? A. My only suggestion is to scrub down using Resene Emulsifiable Solvent Cleaner following label directions. February 2015
Q. Can I use oil based galvanised primer on corner soakers and then use water based paint to finish? A. Yes Resene Galvo One can be overcoated with single pack water and solventborne topcoats. Soakers will need to be degreased before priming. February 2015
Q. I need to paint shipping containers, some quite rusty. What is your most suitable product and application method? A. Scrub down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash following label directions. Prepare areas of corrosion back to a sound surface free of loose corrosion products using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc. Ensure areas of flaking paint are feathered back to a sound edge. Spot prime bare metal using Resene ArmourZinc 110 and then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with 2 coats of Resene Summit Roof. February 2015
Q. I want to apply white water based paint to kitchen cupboard doors which are currently stained with a satin finish stain/varnish. Feels sticky-ish to touch. Once sanded and cleaned what primer should I use? A. Use Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. February 2015
Q. I have just had my house gutters replaced with continuous spouting. Although made of COLORSTEEL® I have had them made 'inside out' so I can paint them in my colour choice. So the outside surface is pre-primed COLORSTEEL®. Do I need to undercoat before applying Resene Lustacryl, or can I apply Resene Lustacryl direct to the primed metal? A. Adhesion of acrylic coatings to the reverse side of COLORSTEEL® can be an issue, so suggest that you leave the gutters to weather for at least four weeks then prime with Resene Galvo-Prime and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. February 2015
Q. I have just finished the second topcoat on my lounge ceiling. It has dried looking ok from some angles but streaky in others. I might have put too much paint on. I think I should sand it and have another go. Could you please advise? A. You have what is referred to as a critical light situation. To correct this you will need to locate any ridges and sand smooth then using a roller and a Resene No.1 sleeve apply a full coat of the ceiling paint with the addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive. Apply a good wet coat of about three roller widths then lay off with a 50% overlap without re wetting the sleeve. Try to layoff from one side to the other side without stopping in the middle. February 2015
Q. I would like to paint a high gloss but deteriorated varnished wooden front door. It has eight panels that are carved so it is not possible to sand and paint stripping is also rather difficult because of all the crevices. Is there some product I can use to 'de-gloss' and provide a good base for paint to adhere to? A. You can use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as the adhesion primer. I would leave the adhesion primer to cure for 48 hours before overcoating. However the existing varnish must be tightly adherent to avoid detachment when the new paint system is applied. February 2015
Q. I have 20 year old Hardiplanks on my house exterior which are rough-sawn look composite. They were stained with Hardistain originally and need to be restained. Would your product Resene Forester be suitable? Do I need to undercoat first? A. After scrubbing down the old stain using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash you can apply the Resene Forester system. You will need to apply the required Resene Sonyx 101 tinted base colour before applying the Resene Forester to achieve the correct colour. February 2015
Q. We are doing a new build and would like to paint the FJ pine weatherboards in Resene Bokara Grey but the supplier recommends LRV > 45. Will your Resene CoolColour™ technology bring us above the recommended LRV? A. The LRV of a Resene CoolColour™ and non-CoolColour versions of the same colour are identical. What changes is the TSR (total solar reflection). TSR is a measure of heat reflection from the painted surface and is always higher for the CoolColour version. There is no direct correlation of LRV and TSR but we have developed a way to use the TSR value to determine if there is any heat related issue when using CoolColours that have an LRV value less than the 40% cut off. For a LRV cutoff of 40 the TSR of the colour must exceed 35%. In the case of Resene Bokara Grey the TSR of the non-CoolColour version is 6% and the TSR of the CoolColour version 24% (all measured over a white undercoat). So unfortunately the TSR of the CoolColour is below your required TSR cut off value. February 2015

Q. We are trying to repaint the exterior timber frames around our house windows with white Resene Lustacryl over the previously painted Resene Karaka and a dark red turps based paint. We have prepared by sanding and priming with Resene Quick Dry and after applying the Resene Lustacryl we can see the previous paint in places. A. Application of white finish coats over a very dark base colour can require more than two coats. Coverage is a function of application rate and as the see through of the basecoat is not over the entire area then this does suggest differences in application rate. The only way is to apply another coat and ensure that a good wet film thickness is applied. February 2015
Q. I am painting over my wooden skirting boards. They don't seem to have any covering except for perhaps some varnish. I have been sanding them down well and painting over with Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel but I am concerned that it is going to end up flaking off after a short period of time. Should I be using some sort of sealer? Or is the way I have done it going to last? A. If the sanding did not produce a good profile than the Resene Lustacryl may chip off the sanded varnish. For the future you can use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer as an adhesion primer without the need to sand the varnish (varnish must be clean and free of dirt, dust, wax, etc) but a light sand always assists with adhesion. February 2015
Q. We want to maintain the exterior look of western red cedar windows that are subject to coastal weather and high temperatures. We previously used another product but had to strip windows back to bare wood as this product breaks down too quickly. Not keen to paint but want a finish that will last more than a couple of years. A. A Resene Woodsman exterior stain would be our recommendation if you don't want to paint. In harsh exposures such as you describe there would be the need to apply a maintenance coat every second or third summer. The stain is designed to erode so flaking is not an issue. When you need to apply a maintenance coat you usually just need to clean the surface (e.g. get rid of dirt, spider webs etc) and then apply the stain. February 2015

Q. Our house is about four years old. I spot cleaned the ceiling to get rid of fly marks, using only water and a brand new soft white cloth. Now we have spots all over the ceiling where I cleaned; they look almost shiny. It's only really obvious in the largest, sunniest room of the house. Can you please give me some information on how I can get rid of these marks? A. Almost all flat ceiling paints will gloss up if rubbed. This is because they are formulated to be very flat and the flatting pigments burnish when rubbed. A touch up or repaint of the ceiling is the only remedy. If the ceiling is subject to critical light issues then I would recommend a total repaint. Our best option for ceilings is Resene SpaceCote Flat, which is a flat waterborne enamel and much more wipeable than a standard ceiling paint. February 2015
Q. We are in the process of building a new house and have cedar wood cladding on part of our house. Could you please advise if the Resene Furniture and Decking Oil exterior would be suitable for the cladding to protect the timber? Also does this product contain a colour stain and what type of oil is in it? A. I would suggest that you use Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain. The Resene Furniture and Decking Oil is not available in colours and can change the colour of the timber. February 2015
Q. I have spilt some perfume on a painted shelf. It has gone all sticky. Can you tell me what to do to correct this? A. Perfume contains a quantity of an alcohol type solvent and this will soften and possibly irreversibly damage acrylic based paints. Sorry but there is no remedy other than to scrape back the affected area and reprime and paint. If you want the best resistance to this recurring use a solventborne topcoat such as Resene Super Gloss or Resene Lusta-Glo. February 2015
Q. We have put all new plasterboard up in our rooms, and I was wondering if we need to seal the walls with wallboard sealer and then use an undercoat before applying the topcoat which will be Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel. A. You will need to seal the new plasterboard and stopping with Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer before applying two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. This is recommended for dry areas (i.e. not wet areas such as bathrooms – for those areas you would use Resene Sureseal). February 2015
Q. I've just got a metal penny farthing bicycle for garden decoration and it isn't painted but appears to be lacquered. I want to paint it with some Resene paint I have and want to know if the lacquer has to be stripped and if a metal primer is needed? A. Yes if you want long term exterior exposure without rusting. February 2015
Q. What type of paint would I need to use if painting decorative art work on my house windows? I want some that can be changed and removed every thirty days using a stencil design. A. You could use an acrylic paint such as Resene Hi-Glo but you will need to use a blade to remove it. February 2015
Q. What is the best product to use to fill nail holes in LINEA® and do I have to prime where I fill? I am using Resene Sonyx 101. A. We recommend using PAL Contract Filler: fill, sand smooth and prime filled areas with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then a full coat of Resene Concrete Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lumbersider. February 2015
Q. I am looking at the David Trubridge Coral fixture and he uses your Resene Lustacryl. I am wondering if it can withstand a small amount of humidity or if I should seal it with something? A. If the correct priming system has been used then there should be no need to seal the Resene Lustacryl topcoat. February 2015
Q. I'm after latex paint, which means latex is the binder, right? How do I know which paints have that? A. The term latex is now old and used to refer to the paints that were thinned with water. Now we refer to these paints as waterborne paints. February 2015
Q. I have some Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel that was purchased 8 years ago and kept in the original tin can. Is it still ok to use? A. Should be if the tin was not opened for use and stored in a cool location. The only possibility would be bacterial contamination - this can usually be determined by the smell test. If the can contents have a strong odour reminiscent of unwashed sports socks then it's likely to be contaminated and not usable. February 2015
Q. We are looking at painting an old roof which is either zinc or galv. It has patches of surface rust which have not gone right through. Can you please recommend a system that we can use that will stabilise/convert the rust and then to topcoat? A. There are products that claim to convert rust to an inactive layer but in my experience they seldom function where there is advanced rusting. Our recommendation would be to wash down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash, and then prepare red rusted areas using a power wire brush or a M3 Rust and Paint Removal Disc. Paint up to the red rusted areas with Resene Galvo One, allow to cure for 16 hours then apply Resene Rust-Arrest to the red rusted areas overlapping onto the Resene Galvo One primer. Then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof. February 2015
Q. Is a 1/2 colour darker than a 1/4 colour? A. Yes, but with some colours the differences can be small. February 2015
Q. Do you have any paint that you would recommend for kitchen laminate countertops? A. Degrease and then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure for at least 48 hours (the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer is not designed to achieve a high film build). Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The total system will take at least five days to develop good adhesion. This is a decorative system and does not have the features of the original laminate surface. February 2015
Q. What is the difference between fluorescent paint and glow in the dark paint? A. The two types differ in mechanism of action with fluorescents absorbing UV or violet light and immediately re-emitting light of a shorter wavelength (in the visible region) so they appear bright and intense, whereas phosphorescent materials absorb UV light and then hold some of the energy for a period of time before re-emitting as a shorter wavelength (hence the afterglow effect when irradiation is removed). February 2015
Q. I have stripped a bedroom of textured plaster down to the paper of the plasterboard and plastered major dents and holes and sanded smooth. The paper is quite rough due to scraping and sanding and still fairly uneven from the different paper layers. I plan to apply Resene Sureseal which should lock down the fibres. Should I also apply Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal before wallpapering and if I do should I then recoat with Resene Sureseal before wallpapering? A. Yes to sealing with Resene Sureseal. Yes to using Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal, you may need 2 coats. You can then apply 2 coats of Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen without the application of a further coat of sealer. February 2015
Q. I have a cedar balustrade on my balcony and have just waterblasted it clean. Can you recommend a Resene product that would suit to paint it white? Will I need to sand it? A. Waterblasting can damage timber, so yes to a thorough sand. Was there any mould/algae growth of the timber? If the answer is yes then treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer following label directions before sanding. Prime with Resene Wood Primer, undercoat with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then apply 2 coats of Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) or Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss). If using dark colours then use the Resene CoolColour™ version of the colour, as this will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non CoolColour technology. February 2015
Q. I'm about to repair a crack in exterior plaster cladding finished with a latex paint, before finishing with a Resene CoolColour™. After the initial repair will Resene Sureseal primer bind to the old latex paint at the edge of the repair area or will I need a different primer? The actual crack will be repaired with a Rockcote product, maybe with mesh depending on how it looks after I expose it. I was going to finish skim over the area with a mortar mix of some description to match the pre-existing texture. A. You can seal off the repair with Resene Limelock. February 2015
Q. We are finding bumblebees are drowning in our pool, which is coated with Resene Swimming Pool Paint. How do we stop this? A. This normally means that the bumblebees are looking for a water source. You could try providing a bird bath with gravel or stones in it so the bees don't drown. However it is recommended you need to cover the pool first so that the bees look and find the new water source. Otherwise they will stick with the pool. There are also many things that people have tried – including adding lemon grass to the new water source to encourage the bees to it. The chlorine or the salts (in natural salted pools) can attract the bees to the pool also. The safest way to prevent the bees drowning is to cover the pool – this also helps keep out leaves etc also. February 2015
Q. A ceiling with exposed beams with particle board in between has had a textured ceiling removed. What product should we use to finish it? The builder has said he can't get a level 4 finish for painting. Would Resene Sandtex work? A. It may be worth trying a high build application of Resene Broadwalll 3 in 1 as a spray on surfacer. Fill deep imperfections then apply the product. February 2015
Q. Can I put oil based varnish on top of waterbased decking stain? A. Sorry but no. The clear will not adhere to the stained finish and has little U.V. absorbing properties. February 2015
Q. In our lounge we painted our Besser bricks a deep red using waterbased paint. Can I paint over in a lightish grey? And how? A. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to the grey. February 2015
Q. I need to repaint a bathroom ceiling previously finished in an acrylic paint. I bought paint some time ago and now I'm not sure which one it is. Help would be appreciated. A. Assuming the existing paint work is sound apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and 2 coats of Resene Room Velvet (solventborne) or you can use two topcoats of Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom (waterborne). February 2015
Q. We are building a house and have plasterboard walls. We have been told we need a three in one sealer before we paint or the paint will not adhere to the areas we have plastered. A. For dry areas use Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer; for wet areas (e.g. bathrooms) use Resene Sureseal. February 2015
Q. What product/process is best to use when painting timber floorboards? Not staining them, painting them. A. Sand smooth then prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. You can then apply two coats of a waterborne enamel, such as Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss, or a solventborne finish. February 2015
Q. We want to paint a mural onto asphalt ground. A. Ensure the asphalt is clean then paint using Resene testpots or Resene Lumbersider. February 2015
Q. Gold lettering has faded on a headstone. What paint would I use to repaint it? A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label directions. Then reapply the lettering (probably need two coats) using a testpot of Resene Metallic colour and a small brush. Allow to dry then using a sharp blade remove any paint form the smooth stone surface. February 2015
Q. Can I paint the tiles around our Yunca multi-fuel fire? We just want to change them to black and painting them would be much easier than retiling. A. It's possible but the paintwork would easily be damaged if the hot fire contents came in contact with the painted surface. February 2015
Q. We want to paint an existing suspended ceiling grid. What is preferable? A. The frame work is usually powdercoated. Ensure the surface is clean and then apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply 2 coats of any Resene waterborne enamel, such as Resene SpaceCote Flat. February 2015
Q. Rust from nails is showing through in lots of places in my decking. The paint is waterborne (tested by wiping off with meths and a cloth). How should I treat the rust spots? A. Scrub the deck down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions. You will need to re-punch the nails and fill, then prime the filled areas with Resene Wood Primer and repaint using 2 coats of Resene Walk-on. February 2015
Q. I've been told by Carter Holt Harvey that Shadowclad® exterior cladding must be stained/painted with 40% + LRV. Could you please tell me the darkest colour I can stain with (prefer a black if possible)? A. There are no colours close to black that have an LRV to meet the CHH cutoff. The LRV of a given Resene CoolColour™ is the same as the LRV of the non-cool version as an LRV is based on how the colour looks, not how it performs. What does change is there is an increase in the TSR (total solar reflectance) value for the CoolColour version of a colour. TSR is a measure of infra-red (heat) reflection from the painted surface. We have developed a relationship of LRV to TSR, in the case of an LRV cutoff of 40% the TSR of the colour must be greater than 36%. The TSR values of most cool black colours are in the order of 25%, which does not meet the criteria for use on Shadowclad®. It is likely that a mid grey would be as dark as you can go on this substrate using the CoolColour technology. Stains don't have LRV values, they only apply to paints. February 2015

Q. I have Resene Quick Dry to use on a couple of projects - exterior painting of eaves and a refurbished wooden chair. I've seen that if bare wood is left for more than a week Resene TimberLock is recommended. Is this just for exterior work? What happens to freshly sanded wood over time in that it needs extra treatment before a primer? What is the difference between Resene Quick Dry and Resene Acrylic Undercoat or is it just preference? What product would you recommend for priming plywood doors with 'most' of the varnish sanded back? A. Timber undergoes quick breakdown by UV and this has the potential to impact upon primer performance. The early degradation is not visible to the naked eye but does occur. Resene TimberLock has the ability to remedy this but not if there is extensive greying of the timber surface due to extended weathering. Resene Quick Dry has a package of additives to protect the timber from natural decay agents; this feature is absent from the Resene Acrylic Undercoat. For your plywood doors use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer or Resene Quick Dry. February 2015
Q. I have hairline cracking in the mortar of my concrete block house. Is Resene Lumbersider suitable for painting this blockwork and sealing over the cracking? A. Apply two coats of Resene X-200 to the cracked areas then you can apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider. Resene Lumbersider will not bridge hairline cracks. February 2015
Q. Can the Resene Woodsman stains be colour matched to an existing finish? Or is it limited strictly to the 41 colours on the chart? A. Yes if you have a wet sample our Colour Lab could create a colour match in a wood stain. February 2015
Q. Is Resene Aquaclear safe to use as a sealer for museums, as we like to use sealers that don't have harmful off-gassing that can affect artefacts? A. We have had a series of pigmented paints tested to the Oddy test. While we have not tested Resene Aquaclear it will give the same test result as these paints that have been tested. The Oddy test is for the emission of corrosive materials from the paint and there are none present in Resene Aquaclear. February 2015
Q. Could you please let me know what paint to seal hessian on walls before applying paint? A. Use Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. February 2015
Q. Yesterday I painted some trim around the bath with Resene Lustacryl. The first coat went on well, but the second coat started to set too fast and has caused some dull (less gloss) patches with slightly raised brush strokes in those patches. Should I lightly sand those areas and perhaps add some Resene Hot Weather Additive to the paint and give it another coat? The temperature is about 26°C. If you recommend sanding how much curing time do I have to allow before sanding? A. All waterborne enamels set up and dry quickly, much quicker than standard conventional acrylic paints. Addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive is the recommended way to increase open time. Also apply a liberal amount of paint as the increased wet film thickness will also assist with increasing open time. You will need to sand defects from existing applications. February 2015
Q. We are buying some external railings for our balcony. Two companies state their painting is best: one said powder paint is best, the other high build vinyl paint. Can anyone help me please as I don't know what's the best option? The balcony will be galvanised. A. While powder coating will give a smooth finish it will break down over time and if the thickness of the coating is not sufficient then there will also be corrosion break through. We would not recommend a vinyl based paint system for galvanising for a balustrade. The best paint system would be to apply two coats of an epoxy primer such as Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with two coats of a 2 pack polyurethane finish such as Resene Uracyl 403. February 2015

Q. We are looking at the colour Resene Ming on cement board. In the full midday/afternoon sun do we need to worry about blistering? Our paint contractor says the colour is too dark and they won't guarantee the work. We thought about changing to Resene Ming CoolColour but the company has purchased the paint already... HELP! A. Colour per se does not cause adhesion issues, it all depends upon the soundness of the underlying paint system. Darker colours attract more heat and it is the heat factor that can cause a failure of an underlying paint system, particularly if there is a build-up of paint layers. Resene CoolColours reflect more heat than the same colour made using non CoolColour technology. For this reason we would always choose to apply the CoolColour version of a colour when using dark colours. I can understand why a contractor may choose not to undertake a guarantee but if the existing paint system is sound and correctly prepared then there should be no adhesion failure. The difficulty is in assessing the soundness of an existing paint system. This cannot be done by visual inspection and the painting history must be taken into consideration along with cross hatch adhesion testing using strong adhesion tape over a number of sites on each elevation. Even if this is undertaken there is no guarantee of minor adhesion loss. The cost of a total strip is very high and when confronted with this many owners decide to take the risk that there will be no issues following a repaint. Below is some information you may find useful on delamination: All coatings have a finite life and in some cases when an old house ages to 30–100+ years old the coatings build up, and although they can appear sound it is not until the surface is painted that the instability of the underlying coatings can become apparent. Old enamel based paints, including red lead primers, become hard and brittle with ageing. Acrylic paints are more flexible than cross linking enamel paints and this means they can undergo extensions without film cracking. Standard acrylic paints are flexible but not elastic which means that at a certain level of extension the film will break. The extensibility is dependent upon resin features and gloss level. There are paints formulated using elastomeric acrylic resins that can undergo stretching and return to the non-extended state without film breakage. As the thickness of paint builds up on a substrate there is a corresponding increase in tension on the underlying paint layers. Modern acrylic paints have excellent adhesion to clean, sound, old prepared paints. When delamination occurs it is usually at the substrate primer interface. There are two distinct types of failure: adhesive (between layers of paint) and cohesive (within a given layer of paint). Upon inspection of these issues the new coatings have always adhered well to the old coatings but the coatings underneath have lost all their adhesion and flexibility properties, in turn causing them to pull away. When investigating a failure the best practice is to check what the failure type is and, if intercoat adhesion, which layers are involved. This can easily be seen by checking the back of a flake and comparing it to what remains where the flake delaminated from. If the failure is cohesive there is usually evidence of the same paint colour being present on the back of the flake and where the flake peeled from. In most cases this issue can be reasonably unforeseen and does not even become an issue until the new coatings are applied, so the case of who is responsible becomes unclear. Even when adhesion tests are done on the old coatings, they may still appear sound but because there are so many layers (sometimes up to 300+ microns) they are brittle and their adhesion becomes limited. A common cause of delamination occurs with a change from a pale to a much darker topcoat colour. The extra heat associated with the colour change is the tipping point. The issue can be avoided by identifying the age and build-up of existing coatings and fully removing them to a sound substrate suitable for painting. However, this does come at a much higher cost than simply painting over the old paint system and the risks involved with removing lead based paint add to the cost, so it is up to the homeowner to make an educated decision of which path they would like to take so as not to have any surprises if their newly painted home starts to blister with the failure of existing coatings. Q. We are preparing to paint the exterior of our home and want to paint over the existing bricks. We have Resene Lumbersider paint to use. What else do we need to do to prepare the bricks? A. Assuming the bricks are not glazed then apply Resene Sureseal as the sealer prior to application of the topcoats. February 2015
Q. I am painting my old villa which has some severely deteriorated paint around the windows. Bare wood is showing on the sill and bottom facings of sashes, some of which has gone furry. I was planning to use oil based primer on this and follow with an oil based undercoat. However I have not been able to get all of the old paint off so am wondering if it is wise to put oil based paint over what may well be water based paint left on the boards? Could you please advise what I should do here? A. You can use two coats of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply Resene Super Gloss as the topcoats. Ensure that the greyed timber is thoroughly sanded to sound grey free timber. February 2015
Q. I'm using Resene Zylone Sheen to paint my interior walls. I sanded before the undercoat and the first topcoat, but do I need to sand between the first topcoat and the second topcoat? A. There should be no need to sand between the two coats of Resene Zylone Sheen. Acrylics are difficult to sand and fresh acrylics even more so. February 2015
Q. What type of paint should I use on my new concrete floor for a studio, bathroom and laundry? Ideally a gloss white. A. Our standard preparation for new concrete is to diamond grind to produce a uniform slightly roughened surface. There are single and two pack options, the two pack would provide better wear resistance, however both use solventborne paints. Single pack option - Seal with Resene Sureseal then apply a coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Super Gloss enamel or two pack option - Seal with Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 403. February 2015
Q. Can Resene Waterborne Woodsman now be used on decks and/or outdoor furniture or do we stay with the separate decking stain? A. Yes in theory it can but Resene Woodsman Decking Stain is specifically made for horizontal areas and Resene Waterborne Woodsman more for vertical areas so they perform best when used in those areas. So we still recommend Resene Woodsman Decking Stain for decks. February 2015

Q. I have a lot of paint splashes and spots on my pavers (pergola area etc) after repainting the outside of the house a couple of years ago - time to clean it up properly. I guess it's all Resene Lumbersider, in a few different colours. What's going to be the most effective way of cleaning it up? Tried turps and paint stripper - doesn't really work because the pavers are porous. Is a strong acid wash the answer? If so, what sort of acid and what sort of strength? A. Only possible suggestion is to carefully waterblast. Thick layers of acrylic paint are unaffected by acid washing. Acid etching involves diluting Spirits of Salts (concentrated hydrochloric acid) by adding 1 part of acid to 6 parts of water, you have to wear protective gear including a face mask as the acid is very corrosive and all operations must use plastic containers. February 2015
Q. In my laundry room I have a double sink set into a surround that I would like to change the colour of if possible. The sinks and cupboards underneath are fine but I am unsure if there is any type of paint that would work as it is the old type of Formica® benchtop that I am hoping to change the colour of. A. Ensure the laminate is clean then prime with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. The adhesion will take about 5-7 days to develop. This is a decorative finish and will not have the features of the original laminate. February 2015
Q. What is considered standard practice when painting architraves a different colour from the walls? Is the change in colour at the wall or at the outer corner of the architrave? A. The change of colour is at the junction of walls and skirting. This is also true of scotias and architraves and is a standard trade practice. February 2015

Q. Rust from nails is showing through in lots of places on my decking. The deck was built before we bought the house, but I presume the nails are galvanised. How should I treat the rust spots on the balustrades and railing? Is it OK to use waterborne semi-gloss when recoating? I have wiped a test area down well first, and then rubbed well with meths and a cloth and some of the paint comes off. A. Scrub the deck down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label directions. You will need re-punch the nails and fill, then prime filled areas with Resene Wood Primer and repaint using two coats of Resene Lumbersider. February 2015
Q. There is a comment online that the wall and skirting may be painted the same colour with the same paint if using Resene SpaceCote. Is it recommended to do this with any of your other wall paints? A. Resene SpaceCote is based on a cross linking waterborne resin and as such develops a harder finish than Resene Zylone Sheen which is based on a conventional acrylic resin. For skirtings a harder finish is required to resist scuffing and knocks. However for the best hardness we still resort to the traditional solventborne enamels. For a solventborne enamel wall paint/skirting paint use Resene Room Velvet or any of the Resene waterborne enamel paints. February 2015

Q. We have bubbled paint on our house which requires removal and repainting due to the blistering on sunny surfaces (mainly). The substrate is a rimu shiplap with no known lead undercoat. CCA treatment may have been used. The timber is in very good condition except for the blistering. Do you have any thoughts? I have looked into using the aluminium based sealer but would like to know what the initial problem has been. A. The issue appears to be delamination and is likely the failure of earlier coats of paint. For exterior exposure testing we expose panels at 45 degree to the north. One year exposure under these conditions is equivalent to 2 years of vertical exposure. The exposure angle of the scalloped area of the weatherboard profile corresponds to the 45 degree exposure conditions, which is why breakdown usually occurs on the scalloped part of the board well before the vertical parts. It is also essential to radius the sharp edges of the boards as the film build at a sharp edge is due to film shrinkage away from the sharp edge. Even after radiusing the edge, double coating of this part of the weatherboard is recommended to get the same dry film thickness as is achieved on the vertical sections. Resene CoolColour™ technology can improve the performance of dark colours on timber weatherboards. The CoolColour version of a colour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non CoolColour technology. If I was asked for the best spec for your situation and we were starting from bare timber (with the above radiussing done) then my system would be a coat of Resene Wood Primer then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then finish with two coats of CoolColour exterior acrylic topcoat. February 2015

Q. I am painting over wallpaper backing and want to do something to cover up the seams so they don't show through the paint so much. What should I do? A. The only product that may help reduce the appearance of the joins is two coats of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal. March 2015
Q. I have a concrete deck that I wish to paint. It has a few cracks that I've quick patched over and it has some smaller ones that I thought I could just paint over. It's exposed to the weather, foot traffic only. A. Apply a coat of Resene Sureseal then two coats of Resene Thixalon 5 (Resene X-400 and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. Like any waterborne paint there is the possibility of scratching if sharp objects are dragged across the painted surface. March 2015
Q. We have some 40 year old wooden stairs which appear to be rimu. They seem to have a polyurethane finish. We would like to reposition these stairs and paint them so as to cover defects and marks. Is this possible? What product range would you recommend? What surface preparation would be needed? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paint Prep following the label instructions then thoroughly sand, dust off and prime with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. March 2015
Q. I'm currently sanding back the panels on the front of my bedroom drawers. They are made of pine, previously varnished. I'm wanting to have a whitewashed look painted on them. Would the Resene Colorwood Whitewash be ok to use in this instance? A. Yes but you will need to apply an additional two coats of Resene Aquaclear. March 2015
Q. I am treating rust on Decramastic tiles prior to painting. Do I use Resene Rust Arrest followed by Resene Galvo One? A. Application of any solventborne paint to a surface that has a bitumen layer will cause bitumen bleed into the paint. For this reason we normally recommend priming bare galvanising or bitumen on Decromastic type roofing with Resene Galvo-Prime which is waterborne. However Rust Arrest remains our best primer for treating red rust - ensure the rusted areas are well washed to remove salt and wire brush to remove loose corrosion products then apply the Resene Rust Arrest to the prepared red rusted areas. Allow to cure overnight then overcoat with Resene Galvo-Prime. Then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof. March 2015
Q. Are you able to make up any colour in your concrete paving paint range? How resilient is it able to be if the paving paint is going to be in a shaded area but in a public space subject to moderate amounts of traffic? Is there an additional clear coating that can be used to ensure that the colours are protected from the abrasion? A. Depends upon the colour chosen, we don't have the same range of tint bases in the products to tint all Resene colours but can do most. The degree of colour fade is determined by the colour. We do not normally recommend clear coating over paving paints as this reduces the slip resistance of the coating. March 2015
Q. We are putting Western Red Cedar shingles under the eaves of our bungalow. Finding it hard to get a clear view on how to treat/stain. Leaving them natural is an option as they are durable and weather to a silvery grey but I have also seen them weather very unevenly and go quite black which we don't want. Would either prefer to retain the wood colour or ensure a more even weathering to the more silvery end of the spectrum. A. The development of a black colour is due to mould growth. There are no clear finishes that will maintain the colour of the shingles and stop mould growth. My suggestion is to stain using Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain in a colour that matches or is close to the fresh timber colour. March 2015
Q. What primer do I use on a galvanised iron roof to go under Resene Crown Grey Friars? The roof is two years old. And also what primer do we use on Villaboard? What is the coarse grit splatter paint to go on top called, to give a rough cast look? A. Resene Galvo One for the galvanising, Resene Concrete Primer for the Villaboard then Resene Resitex Coarse (assume not interior). March 2015
Q. Do you make a white paint that does not contain titanium white? It is needed for a historic war memorial. A titanium white paint will be too bright. A. I would be surprised if there is any white paint that now does not use TiO2 as the main white pigment. If you have a chip of paint, say about the size of a $2 coin or larger we could colour match for you. March 2015
Q. I have 40 year old wood windows in my home. I noticed one of the windows has a sap like substance on it and looks like a bit of bubbling near the sap after applying Clorox to remove it. Some did not come off. What can I do to remove the sap and keep it from returning? A. Bleach solutions will not remove sap exudation. Best to use a tungsten tip scraper to remove the sap and expose the bare timber. Sand and then apply two coats of Resene Wood Primer to the prepared area. This usually stops further sap bleed but not always. March 2015
Q. I have 10 litres of Resene X-200 left after painting my home. Can I use it for painting over the Shadowclad® ply on my shed? A. Resene X-200 was designed for application to cementitious substrates. However you can use it to paint the shed cladding as long as the ply is sound and primed with either Resene Wood Primer or Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. March 2015
Q. I have some interior bare pine which I would like to stain and then hand paint lettering over, preferably with water based paint. Is there any way to do this as I understand stains are generally oil based? Is there a primer which would allow me to make the transition? And what would be the best way to finish and seal the whole project? A. You can use Resene Colorwod which is waterborne for staining then apply a seal coat of Resene Aquaclear before applying lettering using Resene Lumbersider. If this is a flooring application then apply an additional 2-3 coats of Resene Aquaclear. This will change the lettering colour but it will only be noticeable if the lettering is painted in pale colours. March 2015
Q. Can you leave Resene Moss & Mould Killer on your walls/ceilings (on painted Pinex) for longer than 48 hours before washing it off? Is it okay to leave it for 5 days or more? A. Yes, this is fine. March 2015
Q. What product does Resene do to paint over Resene Concrete Stain on a concrete terrace? A. As long as the Resene Concrete Stain is dry and all solvents have left the applied film then you can use two coats of Resene Walk-on. March 2015
Q. Do I have to use roof paint to paint a corrugated fence and why? A. As long as the substrate is appropriately primed you can use two coats of any Resene exterior acrylic paint as the topcoat. March 2015
Q. I'm looking for a product to seal the end of a rebar cut (after removing a tied-in slab to a block foundation wall) exposed to the weather. A. Prime with a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 to achieve a dry film thickness then apply Resene Armourcote 510 to achieve a dry film thickeness of 200 microns. March 2015
Q. We want to repaint our drains at school as part of our Enviro awareness. The previous paint is wearing off - which is the best and longest wearing paint please? A. I suggest Resene Lumbersider as it is waterborne and easily touched up. The option to convert to a 'longer lasting' paint will require application of two pack solventborne paints which is costly, especially if small areas require a colour, and it's not suitable for youngsters to apply. March 2015
Q. How can we remove dried paint splashes from aluminium window frames? A. If the paint is waterborne and fresh try wiping with meths and a cloth. Alternatively use Resene Brush Cleaner and a cloth but wear protective gloves when using the Resene Brush Cleaner. Wash the cleaned area down with water after wiping with Resene Brush Cleaner. Try a small inconspicuous area first to ensure that there is no effect on the aluminium. March 2015
Q. I had trouble getting a good finish with water based enamels the one time I tried, but it was a while ago, and maybe they have improved. The paint dragged and didn't seem to flow at all. Is there a technique for getting the best result? A. Brush marking remains an application issue with waterborne enamels vs solventborne enamels. This is due to the quick set up of the wet paint film which gives reduced time for flow and levelling to occur. This is referred to as open time and can be extended by adding Resene Hot Weather Additive at the recommended rate and applying a good thick wet film to further retard set up time. Care is needed with thick wet films as runs and slumping can occur. We are constantly trying to upgrade the application characteristics of our waterborne enamels to get them more aligned with traditional solventborne enamels. March 2015
Q. Can I put talc into a black Resene testpot to make a paint suitable for use on a blackboard? A. Talc can be used to flatten paint finished (normally in production) but can also make it more prone to burnishing (looking shiny when rubbed). It is often used in ceiling paints because they don't need to be wiped. If they are wiped people tend to find they end up with a patchy look with flat areas and then shiny areas where they have rubbed it. We recommend using Resene Blackboard Paint. March 2015
Q. I am setting up a business selling funeral products including MDF and pine coffins off the internet. I would like to include a paint set for families who want to decorate their coffins using your paints. Would it be best to buy sets of testpots? A. Two coats of a Resene testpot would be ideal. March 2015
Q. Why do colours sometimes seem different from the colour chart to the testpot and actual paint? A. The colour charts, testpots and formulations are matched to the same colour standard. The colour perceived by the human eye will change with gloss level and this can affect colour comparison. Likewise the amount of colour you see and also the lighting and other things in the space can affect the way you see the colour. March 2015
Q. We are in the market for a paint for a projection wall. A. We recommend Resene Silver Chalice. This could be tinted into Resene SpaceCote Flat (or low sheen Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen). March 2015
Q. I have an 1980s Lockwood house and the exterior white finish has discoloured in various parts where it has been exposed to salt air. Do you have products that would suit a repaint of the house or have your products been used before for this purpose? A. Scrub the surface down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label directions. Then prime bare metal and areas of discoloration with Resene Galvo One then apply two coats of Resene Summit Roof. The discoloration may be due to tannin bleed or corrosion of the aluminium cladding over the treated pine timber. March 2015
Q. I have 2 x 4 litres of Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer that have never been opened and are approx 8-10 years old. I have just put new plasterboard into the garage. Is this paint ok to use on this job? A. Solvent borne paint does not deteriorate over time like a water borne paint does. However there will be settling and I suggest that you take the cans to your nearest Resene ColorShop and ask them to shake the cans for you before you open them. Then stir with a wide flat stirrer to check that all the settled pigments have been re-incorporated. March 2015
Q. Can I use Resene paint to colour a glass splashback in my kitchen? A. We do have a product Resene Imperite IF 503 that is used by the industry for painting splashbacks but it is a 2 pack paint and must be spray applied. March 2015
Q. I am planning to paint over a vinyl wallpaper 'paint on/anaglypta' style wallpaper. Do I need a sealer? A. The plasticiser in the vinyl wallpaper can migrate through a paint finish and make it feel sticky. We recommend using Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer first. This sealer is not required on paperfaced paintable wallpapers. March 2015
Q. I was up a ladder painting timber acrylic paint over metal primer on a metal post. I knocked the pail off the ladder and paint went everywhere. There is about a 3 foot high concrete pillar that the metal support post is set in and the paint spilled over that concrete pillar. Can I use the timber acrylic paint on the concrete surface? A. Suggest that it would be best to prime the concrete with Resene Concrete Primer first. March 2015
Q. We have a rural tennis court badly in need of an update. It is concrete painted with acrylic sports paint (with sand mixed into it) about 15 years ago. Do you have a product suitable? A. Resene Tennis Court Coating should be compatible with the existing court paint. March 2015
Q. I need to apply a coat of paint to some new Hardiflex sheets on the outside of my house. I am doing this so that we can pass our inspection prior to repainting the whole house. As we haven't chosen the colour for the repaint yet, would I be OK to use some leftover paint I have (Resene Zylone Sheen) as a temporary measure? Would that type be OK on Hardiflex? A. We always recommend priming bare fibre cement before topcoating. If the board is new use Resene Concrete Primer, if old then Resene Sureseal. Resene Zylone Sheen is only recommended for interior use as the paint surface will undergo a shorter time to chalking compared to an exterior acrylic finish such as Resene Lumbersider which has a similar gloss level. Irrespective of the topcoat used it is our recommendation to prime the bare substrate. March 2015
Q. We're applying Resene Broadwall Prep & Seal to a ceiling (that we've had to repair in places with plaster so some of it is plaster, some paint), but the spec sheet doesn't say whether we should then undercoat it before topcoat, or just go straight to topcoat. Can you advise? A. Resene interior acrylic topcoat paints can be applied direct to the product. You will need to apply two coats of topcoat paint. March 2015
Q. Have tried to repaint a wall with the same colour with a roller suitable for flat plastered walls and I cannot get a perfect finish even with two coats of paint. A. We recommend using a Resene No.1 roller sleeve for application of Resene Zylone Sheen. March 2015
Q. I have a wall that is picture framed quite badly on one side. How do I fix it? I can only find suggestions on how to avoid it, not how to fix it. If I have to repaint the whole wall what do I do about the edge? A. There really isn't any alternative to painting out the entire wall to remedy a 'picture framing' issue. If you were to try to just touch up the area you would essentially be left with the reverse effect of the newly painted area being clearly obvious. March 2015
Q. I've got to paint a metal bar that's used to rest your feet on at a hair salon. It's been painted before with a black colour. Not sure of the product though. What should I use to paint it again? A. A traditional solventborne enamel paint (Resene Super Gloss or Resene Lusta-Glo) will be the easiest to use. You will need to sand the existing paint and prime any bare metal with Resene GP Metal Primer. March 2015
Q. We are about to paint the fascia of our house - this is rimu. Our builder has recommended we use a semi-gloss acrylic enamel. We need to know if this will also be suitable for totara. Can you please advise? A. Not sure why your builder has recommended using a waterborne enamel for painting fascia boards. All bare timber will need to be primed before application of topcoats. For priming Rimu use Resene Wood Primer and for Totara Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. We recommend using waterborne enamels for painting joinery and doors, where two painted surfaces touch. For cladding and fascias we usually recommend using a conventional waterborne acrylic paint but waterborne enamels can also be used as the topcoats for these areas. March 2015
Q. Do you have a product that I can paint old lightly glazed floor tiles with and is it successful? A. We have used the following system for floor tiles: clean down to make sure the floor is free of oil, grease dirt etc. Apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure for 48 hours with good ventilation (you only need a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer). Then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. The paint system will take a minimum of five days to reach a good level of hardness. The wear will depend upon the type and frequency of foot traffic. March 2015
Q. I have cedar weatherboards stained with Resene Waterborne Woodsman (around 5 years old). Can I recoat it with Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain? A. Yes it is possible. Scrub down the previously stained areas with Resene Timber and Deck Wash following label directions taking care not to allow the diluted wash solution to dry out on glass or aluminum joinery. If there are any areas of moss or mould growth treat these first with Resene Moss & Mould Killer following label directions. After thorough rinsing with water allow the cleaned surface to dry then apply two coats of the Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain. March 2015
Q. I recently painted a ceiling with latex paint and accidentally spattered some of the paint on the wall (wall paint is also latex). Is there any way to remove the splatters? A. Sorry but no, the only remedial action would be to repaint over the splatters with the original wall paint colour. March 2015
Q. We have had a fire which has caused minor smoke damage to some apartments. The fire was outside the building so the smoke entered via open windows and ranchsliders. Can you advise the correct specification and process for repainting with Resene products? A. Wash down smoke damaged areas using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions than apply a coat of Resene StainLock and finish with two coats of any Resene interior wall paint. March 2015
Q. What is the name of your 'cross-linking acrylic primer' recommended for applying to timber before painting with Resene Uracryl (in a seaside environment)? A. Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Leave the primer to cure for at least 24 hours if overcoating with strong solvent containing paints. March 2015
Q. Looking for a paint system that seals +150um Zinc Spray and can be immersed in concrete and will get wet and dry and will last 50 years? A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Armourcote 220 thinned 30% to the fresh arc spray to achieve a dry film thickness of less than 10 microns. Then apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 510 to the sealed surface to achieve a dry film thickness of 250 microns. Allow the Resene Armourcote to cure for 5 days before transporting to site and installation. March 2015
Q. How should I paint a veranda of a villa that has hardwood as decking timber. Still has some colour. A. Sand smooth then prime with Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider or Resene Walk-on. March 2015
Q. I would like to paint the inside of our caravan to make it lighter. It is constructed of wood panelling laminate. A. Ensure the surfaces are clean and free of dirt, grease etc then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours with good ventilation, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. The system will take 5-7 days to develop adhesion. Note that the paint finish will not have the features of the original laminate. March 2015
Q. Can I paint a concrete wall with a base layer of magnetic paint, followed by a colour, followed by whiteboard paint finish and not compromise the magnetism or whiteboard finish? A. In principle yes but as you increase the dry film thickness over the magnetic layer you will reduce the magnetic attraction. March 2015
Q. I am looking at getting some paint for toys and furniture in a nursery. Am wanting to know what child safe/non toxic paint is available for use on things that a kid is likely to stick in their mouth at some point? A. Suggest you use Resene Lumbersider, this is an Environmental Choice product. After painting leave the paint to cure for a couple of weeks then wipe down with a damp cloth. March 2015
Q. What should I use to paint my concrete garage floor? It has been painted before in a two pack finish. A. Resene Aquapoxy is the only paint we recommend for garage floors. You will need to thoroughly sand the existing two pack paint and vacuum off the sanding dust before recoating. March 2015
Q. What can I use to remove wooden floor varnish from powder coated aluminium door frames? A. You could try and remove the varnish by wiping with a cloth and MEK but it may affect the powder coated surface. March 2015
Q. I am in the process of scraping the paint off my windows back to wood. There has been a number of coats of paint applied to the window frames. Once I get the paint off can you please tell me if I should use an oil based undercoat and if I could put an acrylic topcoat on? A. The choice or primer depends upon the timber; Totara and Matai must be primed with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, for all other timbers use Resene Wood Primer (oil based). You can apply both water and solventborne topcoat systems over either primer. If using waterborne topcoats for windows you must use a waterborne enamel such as Resene Enamacryl (gloss) or Resene Lustacryl (semi-gloss). March 2015
Q. I am about to renovate a space into a gallery style space to display art. What paint and colour do you recommend? A. I would use Resene SpaceCote Flat as the wall paint. Resene Black White is a popular choice for galleries. March 2015
Q. I purchased some Resene Quick Dry undercoat for our new window frames (internal). Can I use any topcoat paint on this (oil based or waterbased)? What type of paint do you generally recommend for internal window sills and architraves? I've been reading about oil vs waterbased paints and I'm thinking that a waterbased option would be more environmentally friendly and a healthier option. Our builder recommended oil based for durability, which was also mentioned on a sticker that came with our new windows. A. You can topcoat the Resene Quick Dry with either water or solventborne systems. The solventborne paint option will give a harder paint than a waterborne enamel paint. In terms of exterior durability there is no argument that a waterborne enamel will give a longer time to the onset of chalking than a solventborne enamel. Durability is not a consideration with interior surfaces. March 2015
Q. Can you paint Pallisade 'plastic' cladding? If yes, what is the process? A. Yes scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following the label directions to achieve a chalk free surface then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) or Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss). March 2015
Q. I'm in the process of buying a 1935 Kauri timber weatherboard house that has paint flaking off it. The builder pointed out to me that it's because of the natural oily resins in the timber and therefore I need the correct paint so it adheres to it a lot better. Can you advise me on what to do, and what sort of paint or paints I need? A. The paint failure may simply be related to the age and buildup of paint on these areas. Strip back to bare timber and prime with Resene Wood Primer then you can apply Resene water or solventborne systems to suit the area.We repainted the lounge, dining, kitchen March 2015
Q. I live in a 20 year old Lockwood and want to remove grease stains from the planks near my stove. The area was cleaned with sugar soap and sanded and appeared clear of any marks. Two coats of polyurethane was applied but the grease marks have reappeared - even worse than before. A. It is possible that the grease had penetrated beneath the original varnish. If you used a solvent borne varnish the new varnish could have dissolved the grease and brought it to the surface. March 2015
Q. Can I paint over my melamine kitchen cupboards? A. Yes, clean down the surfaces to be painted with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl (best finish by roller application). The system will take 5-7 days to develop adhesion. Note that this is a decorative finish and the painted surfaces will not have the features of the original laminate. March 2015
Q. My ensuite bathroom was painted 20 years ago with Resene Lumbersider. I now want to repaint it with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Can I paint directly or is a primer necessary? The main bathroom is enamel so I will also be repainting that. A. For best results apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat to the existing Resene Lumbersider and after sanding the old enamel paint. March 2015
Q. One wall of our old garage has a lower half made of concrete block (as it is just below ground level and doubles as a retaining wall) with the upper half being lined weatherboard. The lower half suffers from unsightly secondary efflorescence and I wish to seal and paint this portion. As the external portion of this wall is 'underground' I have no way of accessing it to apply an external coating and thus can only deal with the inside surface. After removing the efflorescence, which is the best system to use? A. If you can achieve a seal of the exterior surface then wire brush off any loose efflorescence then apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal and two coats of any Resene low build acrylic topcoat. If the exterior is sealed and water cannot continue to pass through the wall to the inside there should be no future issues with efflorescence. March 2015
Q. When painting a ceiling with sand in it (for fine texture) should the roller strokes overlap in one direction only or should I then go over it a second time at 90 degrees while still wet? A. Recommend one direction with a 50% overlap when laying off. Laying off should traverse across the ceiling across the shortest distance. The first coat may look uneven but this will act as an anchor for the second coat. Would apply the second coat at 90 degrees to the first. March 2015
Q. We have Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path inside and are wanting a clear seal on it to rejuvenate it a little. A. We don't normally recommend a clear finish as this reduces the wet slip resistance. However if you do want a clear finish you could use Resene Concrete Clear (two coats). March 2015
Q. I need to repaint old aluminium sliding doors and windows, after filling the pits from years of sea salt. Does Resene have such a product? A. You will need to apply a coat of Resene Galvo-Prime as the primer then follow with two coats of Resene Enamacryl Silver Aluminium to give the metallic finish. March 2015
Q. I have a 35-year old timber wall board home. Two of the external walls are painted with oil based red stain. I would like to paint the whole house externally, including the roof. As the unstained exterior wall boards are weather-beaten/exposed, would Resene TimberLock be a good choice for rejuvenating the old wood? Is it possible to use Resene TimberLock on the walls that have already been stained with an oil-based stain? Would stain or paint be best as the finishing coat, bearing in mind that the existing stain on two of the exterior walls is oil-based and a deep red colour? A. You will need to treat all timber cladding with Resene Moss & Mould Killer then follow this with a scrub down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash. Then apply Resene TimberLock to all unstained cladding (ensure excess is wiped from the surface). Then apply Resene Wood Primer to both prepared old stained cladding and cladding to which Resene TimberLock was applied. Then finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider (CoolColour™ if using dark colours). Re the restain question: as stains are semi-transparent the existing stain colour will influence both colour choice and final colour as the red will telegraph through the new stain. The use of Resene Moss & Mould Killer and Resene Timber and Deck Wash will still be required if restaining and I would recommend Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain (solventborne) due to the age of the exposed cladding that was not originally stained. March 2015
Q. We are looking at using Resene Waterborne Woodsman on a Shadowclad® product. We are using Shadowclad® Textured and wondering whether we should order a natural or primed finish for best use with Resene Waterborne Woodsman. A. If you are staining you will have to use the unprimed Shadowclad®. The best way to check colours is to use a Resene Waterborne Woodsman testpot and apply two coats to an offcut. March 2015
Q. We are planning to repaint outside. What do we need to know about fading? A. If you're worried about exterior fading there are some pigments and colours that will last longer than others, so you can opt for those colours which will give you a longer life. If you opt for a Resene CoolColour™ version of a colour (made with special pigment technology that reflects more heat than a normal colour) this helps reduce the heat on the surface and slows down the rate of fade. You can also apply a topcoat of Resene Clearcoat UVS as a topcoat which has UV inhibitors that will help protect the pigments in the topcoat beneath it. March 2015
Q. What paint do I need to paint a concrete tile roof and also paint bare cedar weatherboards? A.The roof needs to be clean of moss/mould/algae and accumulations of dirt. Treat first with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted to label directions then high pressure water wash. Remove large lumps of moss etc before treating with the Resene Moss & Mould Killer solution. When dry apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof. The success of painting is determined by the initial cleaning steps. March 2015

Q. My interior wall paint seems to be fading in the sun. What can I do to combat it? A. Noticeable interior fading is relatively uncommon with wall paints. It is most likely to occur where you have a strong wall colour near a window that gets a lot of strong sunlight or when a low quality paint is used. The exposure to the sun can wear down the top layer of the paint leaving some of the pigment exposed which leaves a fine powder on the surface which makes the colour appear lighter (this is known as chalking). If you clean the wall carefully it will usually remove the powder. Sunlight that is affecting interior paint will affect other interior furnishings also such as carpets and fabrics. Consider investing in voile curtains or tinted glazing as these will help to reduce damaging U.V. light. When purchasing paint choose a quality paint tinted correctly for maximum colour durability. Cheaper products use lower quality pigments that are less durable and while they may look the same initially they won't wear as well. March 2015
