Other ideas: For a darker effect paint the table top with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene All Black.
Step one
Measure, mark and cut timber and MDF to the sizes listed above. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step two
Using PVA glue, fix the smaller sections of MDF to the larger sections to form both halves of the table top. Clamp at either end and wipe off any excess glue with a clean cloth. Allow to dry overnight.
Step three
Using PVA glue and nails, fix the lengths of 25mm x 50mm timber to the underside of the table top, positioning each length approximately 25mm in from each edge. Punch in nail heads using a nail punch.
Step four
Use filler to fill in the nail heads and, if necessary, where each of the two pieces of MDF are joined. Once dry, sand smooth with sandpaper. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step five
Apply one coat of
Resene Quick Dry to the top, sides and underneath of the table top and allow two hours to dry.
Step six
Apply two coats of
Resene Kaitoke Green to the top, sides and underneath of the table top and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step seven
Mask off a 20mm line around the outside edge of the table top and apply two coats of
Resene Alabaster, removing the masking tape before the second coat has dried. Allow two hours to dry.
Step eight
Mask off a 3mm line down the centre and apply two coats of
Resene Alabaster, removing the masking tape before the second coat has dried. Allow two hours to dry before setting the two halves of the table top on two lengths of timber across two saw horses.
