Wall planter

Transform a simple wall planter into something special with Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stain.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 21

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: a wooden wall planter, a clean and dry lint-free cloth, damp cloth or sponge, latex gloves, paintbrush, sandpaper and turps for washing brush. Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Japanese Maple.

To get the look: Mark stained the background shed wall with Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Evergreen.

Other ideas: For a darker look use Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Pitch Black.

Step 1
Step one
Lightly sand the outside and inside of the wall planter, following the direction of the grain, as shown.
Step 2
Step two
Wipe off any sanding dust with a damp cloth or sponge, and allow to dry.
Step 3

Apply one coat of Resene Japanese Maple to the inside of the planter.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Japanese Maple to the outside of the planter, taking care not to get any on the metal bands. Wash out brush using mineral turps.
Step 5
Step five
Carefully wipe off any excess oil stain from the inside and outside of the planter using a clean and dry lint-free cloth. Leave to dry for 24 hours.
Step 6
Step six
Apply a second coat of Resene Japanese Maple to the inside and outside of the planter and wash out brush using mineral turps.
Step 7
Step seven
Again, carefully remove any excess oil stain with the clean cloth. Leave to dry for 24 hours.
Step 8
Step eight
Hang your planter on an outside fence or wall using a sturdy galvanised nail or hook and plant up with good quality potting mix and your favourite ‘potted colour’.
