Difficulty level: Moderate
You will need: 1.8m rough sawn fence palings, 100mm x 100mm x 2.4m h4 treated fence posts (one at either end and then one for every 2.5m of fence line), 100mm x 50mm fence rails (approximately three times the length of the fence line), 50mm galvanised nails, 100mm galvanised nails, hammer, large clamps, paintbrush, paint stirrer, pencil, rapid set concrete (1 x 25kg bag for each fence post), a watering can with clean water, saw, set square, spade, spirit level, string line and tape measure. Resene Waterborne Woodsman CoolColour penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Bark.
To get the look: Mark finished off the bottom edge of the fence with a 50mm layer mulch of 40mm garden stones.

Step one
Set out the final fence position with a string line and dig a series of post holes approximately 500mm deep and up to but no more than 2.5m apart.
Step two
Place a fence post in each hole and secure at the base using rapid set concrete, following manufacturer’s recommendations. Ensure the posts are upright using a spirit level and that the tops are in line using a string line. Leave to cure preferably overnight.
Step three
Measure and cut three lengths of fence rail to fit the span of the fence, ensuring that any join overlaps in the centre of a post.
Step four
Hold the first lower fence rail in position with clamps at each end, as shown (ensuring the rail is no less than 100mm from the ground level), and fix at each end using two 100mm nails. Continue with the remaining lower fence rails.
Step five
Attach the upper rail in the same way, ensuring the tops are flush with the tops of each fence post, as shown. Attach the middle rail in the same way.
Step six
Attach the fence palings, as shown, fixing each one with two 50mm nails to the upper, middle and lower rails. Ensure the top of each paling is flush with the upper rail.
Step seven
Stir the Resene Waterborne Woodsman with a flat wooden stirrer.
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Bark to the entire fence, allowing 24 hours for each coat to dry.
