Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 41

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: Two 1.2m treated fence palings, 50mm galvanised nails, drill with hole-cutting attachment, hammer, paintbrush, paint stirrer, pencil, exterior PVA glue, sandpaper, saw, set square
and tape measure. Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Earthsong.

To get the look: Mark painted the background panel with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Norwester and Resene Prussian Blue.

Other ideas: For a rich red effect stain the planter with Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Totem Pole.

Step one
Measure halfway along each of the fence palings and mark a line using a pencil and set square.

Step two
Cut the fence palings in half using the pencil lines as a guide.

Step three
Measure, mark and cut three evenly spaced holes in two of the pieces of fence paling, as shown.

Step four
Step two Step three Step four Fix these two pieces together, as shown, using PVA glue and nails.

Step five
Attach the two remaining pieces of fence paling, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and nails.

Step six
Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step seven
Stir the Resene Waterborne Woodsman thoroughly with a paint stirrer.

Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Earthsong to the planter, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
