Revamp a deck

It’s easy to give an old deck a brand new lease of life using Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: a brush or broom, bucket, garden hose with clean running water, paintbrush, paint stirrer and turpentine for washing the brush. Resene Moss & Mould Killer, Resene Timber and Deck Wash, Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Warm Kwila. For a waterborne finish use Resene Woodsman Decking Stain.

To get the look: Mark painted the background raised bed with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Westwood.

Other ideas: For a darker finish use Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene English Walnut.

Step 1 how to restain your deck
Step one
Thoroughly sweep the deck to remove and dust and dirt.
Step 2 how to restain your deck
Step two
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer with five parts clean water.
Step 3 how to restain your deck
Step three
Apply a generous amount of the diluted solution across the deck and scrub into the grooves using a brush or broom. Leave for 48 hours.
Step 4 how to restain your deck
Step four
Mix one part Resene Timber and Deck Wash with three parts water.
Step 5 how to restain your deck
Step five
Scrub the diluted solution across the deck, allowing the surface of the timber to remain wet for 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 6 how to restain your deck
Step six
Thoroughly rinse off the Resene Timber and Deck Wash with clean water. Allow the deck to dry.
Step 7 how to restain your deck
Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain with a flat stirrer.
Step 8 how to restain your deck
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain to the deck, running in the direction of the grain. Allow 24 hours for each coat to dry.
