Plywood cabinet

It’s easy to freshen up a plain plywood cabinet using Resene Colorwood wood stain.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloths, paint stirrers, paintbrush, plywood cabinet, Resene Aquaclear satin, Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Meranti, rubber gloves, sandpaper, screwdriver.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Quarter Dutch White.

Other ideas: For a paler effect stain the plywood with Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Rock Salt.

Step 1
Step one
Remove the handles from the cabinet and then lightly sand the plywood surface.
Step 2
Step two
Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 3

Carefully stir the Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Meranti.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Meranti to the cabinet, brushing in the direction of the grain.
Step 5
Step five
Let the Resene Colorwood penetrate the grain for up to fifteen minutes before removing any excess stain with a clean cloth. Again, wipe in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry.

Carefully stir the Resene Aquaclear.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Aquaclear to the cabinet, brushing in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry for two hours.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two more coats of Resene Aquaclear to the cabinet, again brushing in the direction of the grain. Allow two hours for each coat to dry. Replace the cabinet handles.
