Mark Rayner breathes new life into old trellis with a thorough clean and a simple paint job.

To get the look: Mark painted the shed wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Soft Apple, or for a warm green effect paint with Resene Clover.

You will need: Resene Moss and Mould Killer, garden sprayer, old trellis, Resene Paint Prep and House Wash, bucket, stiff bristled brush, hose or access to clean running water, sandpaper, drill with 4mm drill bit, 100 mm galvanised timber screws with washers, ratchet or small spanner for fixing screws and paintbrushes, Resene Turps, Resene Rust-Arrest, Resene Quick Dry and Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Step 1 how to refurbish your tired trellis

Step 1
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water and fill the garden sprayer with the diluted solution.

Step 2 how to refurbish your tired trellis

Step 2
Generously soak the wooden trellis with the solution and leave for 48 hours.

Step 3 how to refurbish your tired trellis

Step 3
Mix one part Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to three parts water or use the ready to use product.

Step 4 how to refurbish your tired trellis

Scrub the solution vigorously into the trellis using a stiff-bristled brush.

Step 5
Allow the trellis to remain wet for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow to dry.

Step 6
If necessary, sand any areas of rust and spot prime any metal nail heads with Resene Rust-Arrest. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

Step 7
Spot prime any areas of bare wood with one coat of Resene Quick Dry and allow two hours to dry.

Step 8
Apply two coats of Resene Alabaster to the trellis, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step 9
Place the trellis in position and drill several pilot holes, as shown, along the edge and base of the trellis.

Step 10
Fix the trellis in place with 100mm galvanised screws and washers, as shown.

Step 11
Paint the screw heads with two coats of Resene Alabaster, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
