Potting bench

This waist-height bench will be your ideal companion when you’re busy taking autumn cuttings.

Make a stand up potting bench for your garden

As seen in kiwigardener

You will need:

  • 50mm exterior screws
  • 90mm exterior screws
  • 60mm x 10mm x 1400mm piece of treated timber moulding
  • Paint stirrer and Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Kwila
  • Sandpaper, saw and screwdriver
  • Set square and tape measure
  • 100mm x 50mm treated timber cut to the following lengths:
    • 4 x 900mm (legs)
    • 2 x 690mm (side edges)
    • 1400mm (back edge)
  • Tongue and groove landscaping timber cut to the following lengths:
    • 4 x 1200mm (base and front shelf)
    • 2 x 1300mm (front and back)
    • 2 x 560mm (sides)

Handy hint: Drilling pilot holes first with along drill bit will make it much easier when screwing the pieces of wood together.

Top tip: If your bench will be out in the hot sun, consider using a Resene CoolColour version of your colour to reflect more heat and keep your bench cooler.

Here's another idea: This project could also be used as a raised planter bed – simply drill drainage holes in the base before planting up with your favourite potted colour.

To get the look: Mark painted the background stucco wall with Resene AquaShield tinted to Resene Pipi.

How to build a potting bench:

Step 1 Step one
Measure and mark all the pieces of timber to the lengths required.
Step 2 Step two
Cut the lengths to size with the saw and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 3 Step three
On a level surface, fit three of the 1200mm lengths of tongue and groove landscaping timber together, as shown, to form the base of the bench.
Step 4 Step four
Attach the two 560mm lengths of tongue and groove landscaping timber into position, as shown, to form the sides of the bench, fixing with 90mm screws.
Step 5 Step five
Attach the two 1300mm lengths of tongue and groove landscaping timber into position, as shown, to form the front and back of the bench, fixing with 90mm screws.
Step 6 Step six
Turn the bench upside down and attach the four 900mm lengths of timber into position, as shown, to form the legs, fixing with 90mm screws. Use a set square to ensure the legs are at right angles.
Step 7 Step seven
Turn the bench the right way up and attach the two 640mm lengths of timber and the 1400mm length of timber into position, as shown, to form the side and back edges, fixing with 90mm screws.
Step 8 Step eight
Attach the final 1200mm length of tongue and groove landscaping timber into position, as shown, to form the front shelf, fixing with 90mm screws – ensure the ‘groove’ side is facing the front.
Step 9 Step nine
Attach the piece of timber moulding into position, as shown, to neaten the front edge, fixing with 50mm screws.
Step 10 Step ten
Carefully stir the Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Kwila.
Step 11 Step eleven
Apply two coats of Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Kwila to the potting bench, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
