  • 100mm exterior screws
  • Exterior construction glue
  • Exterior PVA glue
  • Paint stirrer
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Plastic waste pipe cut to approx 180mm
  • Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Skywater

Top tip:  Use a set square throughout construction to ensure the timber joints are square in all directions.

To get the look:  Mark painted the background wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Half Dutch White.

Handy hint:  If you don’t want to position the sink against a wall, simply attach an appropriate pipe clip at the back of the unit to keep the hose in position.

How to build a garden sink

Step 1 Step one
Measure, mark and cut the 70mm x 45mm timber and 90mm x 45mm timber to the lengths listed above. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step 2 Step two
Attach two of the 450mm lengths of timber and two of the 900mm lengths of timber together to form one side of the sink frame, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and 100mm screws, drilling pilot holes first. Repeat this step to form the second side of the sink frame.

Step 3 Step three
Stand the two sides of the sink frame upside down and attach the two 480mm lengths of timber, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and 100mm screws, drilling pilot holes first.

Step 4 Step four
Stand the sink frame the right way up and attach the 620mm lengths of timber to form the lower shelf, spacing these pieces approximately 33mm apart. Once again, fix with PVA glue and 100mm screws, drilling pilot holes first.

Step 5 Step five
Measure, mark and cut the pieces of 90mm x 20mm decking to the measurements listed above and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step 6 Step six
Attach the 620mm length of 70mm x 45mm timber along the top back edge of the sink frame, fixing with PVA glue and 100mm screws, drilling pilot holes first. Attach the three lengths of decking around the remaining top edges of the sink frame, as shown. Fix these with PVA glue and 65mm screws, drilling pilot holes first. Allow glue to dry.

Step 7 Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Skywater.

Step 8 Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Skywater to the entire sink unit and allow to dry.

Step 9 Step nine
Apply a second coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Skywater to the entire sink unit and allow to dry.

Step 10 Step ten
Place the sink into position in the base unit, fixing along the back edge with a line of exterior construction glue. Allow the glue to dry.

Step 11 Step eleven
Screw the section of waste pipe into the underside of the sink plug, as shown.

Step 12 Step twelve
Position the sink unit against a wall or fence and feed a hose with a spray attachment up the back, as shown. Place the stainless-steel bucket beneath the waste pipe.
